State of Grace #2

Silver Bullet

Rate this book

Every night of her life, I’ve visited my Amazing Grace in her dreams. Every morning, she wakes up with zero recollection of it.

Does it hurt? Well, a little, honestly. But that doesn’t matter because the time has come for us to meet in real life. This is our moment. I’m ready to show her all the reasons why I’m her best soul bond—sorry not sorry, Riot.

But it seems the Goddess of Night doesn't love me and my girl as much as I thought she did because just when everything was starting to work out, things get complicated. The paths that were open to Grace continue to close, and the agathos aren’t backing down.

I have a job to do, and I’m not leaving until I’ve done it. If the gods want to take me from Grace, they’ll have to come and claim me themselves.

Silver Bullet is the second book in the State of Grace series. It is a slow burn reverse harem (MMFMM) romance suitable for readers 18+

Wobbly second book for me. 3.5 stars.

I loved Bullet but by 40% wanted to toss my kindle from a moving vehicle, because the poor boy needed some LOVE. OMG. I am OBSESSED with Bullet and stupid Grace was totally stuck on herself (me me me me I'm so prim and proper and tight jeans are BAAAADDD)...not realizing the poor man had obsessed over her ("literal dream girl") her entire life. And she remembered NONE of it. Oooof. Knife to the heart. While I wasn't expecting insta-love, I did hope that Grace would inquire about his life/feelings more and care a little bit less about him educating her on mythology and prophecy.

I pressed through, though and Grace redeemed her selfish ass a little. But I still don't think Bullet got a chance to shine like he deserved. *salty*

So--I'll definitely read the next book, but I felt that there was too much dialogue and gods/goddesses/mythology explanation in this book that was (quite frankly) unnecessary to the relationship-plot moving forward. I *get* that the author did her research with those Stephen Fry books--whooptie do!--but we readers only need the barest of explanations compared to what she provided. It felt like the relationship conflict (and Grace's inner conflict) took second place to the larger conflict when, really, the focus should have been switched. Let the characters settle with one another, work their shit out...explain those "bonds" better (hella vague on that one) and let Grace come into her own with her mates. All the while, tease the bigger conflict (duh...we need to have a reason for her to find her other guys and take down the system).

Anyways, I was hot and cold on this one, but as I wrote, I'm curious what Wild (*ahem* Idris Elba) has in store, and I'm HERE for a creeper/stalker love interest angle.

"We'd meet, and she would realize she'd been in love with me her whole life because I was her LITERAL DREAM MAN-Bullet

I mean when the book opens up with a Hamilton lyric you know you’re in for it. Plus Colette, the queen that she is, gifted us with a recap which I firmly believe should be in all books.

I enjoyed this book and it was a great addition to the State of Grace world. It pretty much picks off from book 1s ending but from Riots POV. The book is primarily from Grace, Riot, and Bullets POV but there are a few chapters from the other soul bonds. Colette took pity on us and there is no brutal cliffhanger in this one.

Bullet was a great addition to Graces bonds, but his secretiveness did drive me crazy at times. I loved that he was so obsessed and in love with Grace and enjoyed driving Riot crazy. I enjoyed getting a mix of the current bonds POVs as well as getting to know the other two bonds a little through their own chapters.

The steam does pick up in this book and bonds are solidified. There are some slow moments in the book but I consider this normal for books in series with world building. Sometimes we need information rather than action or steam.

MM between Bullet and another soul bond is introduced in this book. Nothing happens on page and instead a minor mm moment is mentioned from before the book 1 started. Honestly, I did not love this addition for 2 reasons. 1. Bullet is so obsessed and in love with Grace and knew that they were soul bonds since they were kids so the mm moment bothered me, even if it was with one of her other soul bonds. 2. I’m of the opinion that if the guys only have a bond with the FMC then that’s the only person they should be with. If the guys themselves have a soul bond too then that changes things but it doesn’t make sense to me for them to have sexual encounters, even minor ones, with others who they don’t have a bond with (especially if they know they’re going to have a soul bond). I believe Colette said it’s only going to be light mm 🤞🏻 and both guys seem obsessed with Grace first and foremost so I guess we will see how it goes 🤷🏻‍♀️. I'm hoping they're just attracted to one another and not in love because that wouldn't make sense to me with Grace being their soulmate.

I was so excited to meet Bullet and he didn’t disappoint! I loved getting to know him more and get more background on his gift.

I reallllly liked that the author put a quick recap at the start of the book! I really appreciated that.

There’s not much action in this book, it’s slow burn but i expected to have a bit more going on to move the plot along outside of the relationships. There is steam by the end of this book though, and it was well written!

We establish who the other two bonds will be and get their POV. That was interesting and I can’t wait for them all to be together.

I wasn’t a fan of Bullet’s meeting with the other soul bond, Wild. Bullet has been saving all of his firsts for Grace, and though he feels guilty for kissing Wild and flees, I felt it was unnecessary to add at all. If there has to be MM, i always prefer any attraction to be after everyone is established with the fmc. I also felt sad that for a lot of the book, Grace isn’t all in with Bullet and he feels jealous of her connection with Riot despite their connection every night when he dream walks (which she never remembers).

I really liked Grace in the first book, she wasn’t totally there for me in this one, but I’m excited to see how she’ll develop in the next one!

3.5 stars, I appreciate the slow burn and giving the characters time before jumping into bed but Grace is just a little too awkward still.
I am traveling and have random WiFi, so not as many highlights.

Looking forward to Wild now that she has bonded to Bullet and Riot as well as her becoming more of a bad girl.

It took a while but we finally got to sexy times. I don’t care for Mercy and that story line so maybe it will make sense later?

4.5 🌟!
My adorable, powerful, snobby, cranky Bullet….. you are the best.
This series is so consuming and I love it to bits.

I didn’t give it full stars because I wanted Grace to give more attention to Bullet in this book. Especially as he loved her so much and for so long and was absolutely faithful to her from childhood. But it did get better in 3rd book.
Also it was mentioned that Dare and Riot used to have menages (on night stands) before and I ABSOLUTELY HATE when heroes in reverse harem does that. In my mind it dims the importance of what they have with heroine. I wanted it to be their own thing you know. So it irritated and nagged me till the end.
To be honest I’m kinda trying to forget it.

Recommended.

Yes. Definitely yes. I am here for where this series has gone so far and hopefully where it’s headed.
I can’t believe this is only the second book, but also holy shit it took Ssoooo long for ✨them✨ to bond!
‘Slow burn’ is 100% accurate.
The tension has been fun, and sadly we’re just going to be moving on to new tensions next, but still.
I’m still into it.
Hopefully the next book is even better.

Conflicted

I was all in with following Grace and her men....but this is the 2nd book and it still feels like this story is about it Riot and hers relationship. Bullet is more of a sad background character. I was okay with Grace being a Mary Sue but it started to get annoying the longer this dragged on. There was a lot of repetition in everything that's said. Many eyerolls when I read the same info again and again. There is no believable chemistry between Grace and Bullet. I felt so bad for him, this was supposed to be more about his connection with her. Finally when we get an intimate scene witch is at the very end of this story, it is so lackluster and awkward and such a HUGE disappointment. There are two, the 1st with Bullet and the other with Riot. Riots is much more believable but still unimpressive. I finally skimmed through it and it ends on such a weird middle of a conversation cliffhanger. I am slightly interested in her other bonds but not enough to slog through another book like the1st 2. I was really hoping the 2nd would be an improvement in the repetitiveness of information, but I'm giving up here and calling this series quits.

DNF

I liked book 1 it was an interesting concept, I started book 2 with excitement thinking the ground work had been done and now the story would start. The reality is I fell asleep twice before I gave up on this book.

There is a lot and I mean a lot of internal dialogue then when they speak it's info dumps on gods and goddesses. I don't remember signing up for class. The characters do not grow at all. Grace goes on and on about her choice of clothes and her mother's reactions to her "new" image, the girl is still covered from head to toe!

So no plot or character development felt like reading a thesis, I got bored, even the non stop hints at the future fell flat.

3,5???

I hate this book

But

I loooooove this book

😡 it was infuriatingly slow at times, and it took me ages to read. It felt like the longest book in history, and there were so many chapters where it felt like nothing happened.

But

🥰I feel like the story needs to develop this way. The pacing and the awkwardness between the characters just makes it all better, it makes all the sense in the world! And I’m already in love with all of them, couldn’t help it. I need Dare and Grace to meet rn!

I don't really know if this was better than the first book, but it was still good. I honestly expected Bullet to be different, but he was really cute. I don't know how to feel about Wild.

I’m on a kick of writing reviews for a full series because my current thinking is if the first book is awesome, but the series sucks, you can get sucked in for no reason, so I’m trying to put the review as whole and then rate the books individually to help 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really enjoyed the series. It was much more hopeful, loving and fun than I thought it would be.

Imagine that living amongst us today are both agathos and daimons. Beings whose soul purpose is to either help humanity or guide them to destruction. Our girl, Grace, is an agathos—Born to be the embodiment of all things good and pure and righteous BUT her main “purpose” in life has been to find her “bonded” and now at 25 everyone in her community just assumes she is broken, and then she meets Riot (a Daimon) and her whole world flips upside down.

I loved how clearly planned and thought out this series was. Could it have done with some editing? Absolutely, but overall, everything that happened in what becomes a mythological epic story makes sense to the characters and the original structure of the story.

Run Riot: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Silver Bullet: ⭐️⭐️ (slower plot)
Wild Game: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Dare Not: ⭐️⭐️ (couldn’t figure out the point)
Saving Grace: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (would have been 4 if the ‘separation trope’ didn’t exist for more than half of the novel)

Overall series rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ HEA.

Content/Trigger Warning: clear purity culture/religious theology allegory, reverse harem relationship, MMF relationship within the harem; religious sacrifice, ceremonies etc. super steamy scenes for all characters.

I don't know how I feel about Grace. Grace is one of those characters that is so "good" and wants to believe the good in everyone but sometimes at the expense of others. Like in the first book she put herself and Riot at risk because she just had to use all of her "good luck" magic on others. Like bitch! Can't you just try. Can't you avoid situations, can't you not go to the community center? She can be so dumb.

I felt bad for Bullet because I don't feel like Grace had much empathy regarding him, she wasn't considerate of his feelings. He literally loved her his whole entire life and she doesn't remember shit. And she doesn't force a heart to heart cause she's intimidated by him and his ethereal glow sometimes? Give me a break. She doesn't even put in the effort to get to know him.

Yap, yap, yap, yap, yap..... and on and on. Where was the plot? What was the purpose of this? All the dreams, kill me now. I had to close the cover and throw it in the return to Library NOW pile. Made it to about 121... barf.

⁺₊★·.´🎧✩°。 0:56 ──♡───── 3:32 ⁺₊🎧★·.·´

🎶 "Counter all your quick remarks. Like passing notes in secrecy”

Every night, Bullet (H) visits Grace (h) in her dreams. For years, their connection has been an unspoken bond—he’s been there, in her subconscious, while she wakes with no recollection of their time together. It’s a painful kind of love, but he doesn’t mind. Not anymore. The time has finally come for them to meet in the real world, and this is the moment he’s been waiting for.

─── ・ 。゚☆: THOUGHTS*.☽ .*:☆゚゚───

I’m honestly not sure if I’m vibing with this book, and it’s kind of bad. The characters just aren’t standing out for me, not even Riot, Grace, or Bullet. It’s like, I expected more from them by now, but none of them are really pulling me in. I don’t know, I was hoping I’d get more of a connection, but it feels like I’m just reading without actually caring about the characters. The plot's kind of dragging too because of it. Maybe it picks up, but as of now, they’re just not hitting.

[Bullet]

“I wanted them to be happy and whatever, but I also wanted cuddles, and I wasn’t quite sure how to get them.”

Bullet’s whole thing with Grace is interesting, but it feels a little one-sided, especially since he’s been in love with her for years, even though she doesn’t remember him at all. Like, he’s been in her dreams for so long, obsessed with her, and holding onto that connection, while she’s just meeting him for the first time, having no memory of their past. It’s a weird dynamic because she feels this sense of familiarity with him, but it’s almost like they’re strangers at the same time. She’s still closer to Riot, and Bullet is just kind of left hanging there, knowing everything about her while she’s completely in the dark about him. It makes the whole relationship feel tilted, like he’s doing all the heavy lifting emotionally, and she’s just trying to catch up. It’s tough because, for him, it’s not just a “first meeting”–it’s like years of connection that she doesn’t even remember.

[Riot]

“No matter who else comes into our lives, we’re still Riot and Grace,” I assured him, surprised at the fierceness in my voice. “What I have with anyone else doesn’t take away from us, and if you ever feel like it does, then promise me you’ll tell me so I can fix it.”

Riot has been gone for most of the book, and it’s clear that she’s still missing him, even when she’s spending time with Bullet. It’s like Bullet is trying to fill a space that Riot left, but he can’t replace him in Grace’s heart. There’s a lot of tension in how she bonds with Bullet—it almost feels like she’s doing it because Riot suggested it, like she’s trying to appease the situation while still holding onto the connection she has with Riot. Because she met Riot first and had that initial bond with him, it’s always going to be a special connection that the others can’t quite replicate, no matter how close she gets to them. I’m honestly curious how things will play out with the other characters, especially with that sort of favoritism hanging over things. It seems like Riot is always going to be her first choice, even if she’s trying to make things work with Bullet. It’ll be interesting to see if the dynamic shifts as the story progresses, but right now, it’s definitely Riot who has her heart.

[Dare/Wild]

Dare is being kept at a distance, even though he’s clearly interested in meeting Grace. The fact that Bullet keeps steering him away adds some serious tension—it's almost like Bullet is playing gatekeeper, keeping Dare from fully entering the picture. Now with Wild coming into the picture, things are starting to get even more complicated. If he’s her third bond, that already makes things super intense and raises the stakes, but it’s also puzzling that he doesn’t want to meet her. The whole "he doesn’t want to meet her" vibe is definitely raising some red flags. What’s his deal? Is he trying to avoid the bond, or is there something more serious going on that’s keeping him away? It seems like Grace’s bond situation is becoming even more tangled.

─── ・ 。゚☆: OVERALL*.☽ .*:☆゚───

I have to DNF because I don’t see how she can love someone more than Riot and it is clear favoritism toward him.

Grace is now in hiding with her two bonds after her family showed their true colors. Trying to break her bond with Riot and set her up with some bonds who just lost theirs was a ludicrous idea to begin with. But now the entire clan is on the lookout for her and everyone believes Grace has been kidnapped. In reality that's so far from the truth and Grace just wants to explore her new bonds. In fact it's rather interesting how quick everyone is to jump on the bandwagon that it's rather eye opening to see that perhaps the Daimon are not the bad guys they've been made out to be, at least not that bad. We are now at three bonds and two have been completed. I really hope Dare is one of the guys as we've been led to believe cause I really find him to be interesting and I'm looking forward to them finally meeting. I think even though Grace's life is kinda going to shit with everyone she loved betraying her that it's almost worth it as it allows her time to get to know her guys and vice versa. When it comes to Bullet it's almost a weird relationship since he remembers so many prior meetings and conversations that don't even exist to Grace, it's got to be a little heartbreaking and annoying to him. Not sure what's on the horizon for the gang next but time will tell.

Not much happens in this book. It’s mostly giving a bit of context of the world—them trying to understand what’s going to happen. I really wanted more action this time but I’m happy to read the next book to find out more.

We are thrown back into the story right where book 1 ends. There is some surprising help and betrayal and it will keep your heart rate elevated. There is a slight lull after the action in the beginning but there is a tremendous amount of world building, history and character development that helps to further engross you within the story. Once it starts to pick up though, it doesn’t stop and the ending had me wanting to know more and more.

We are introduced to new characters and you get to further know the main characters and characters that were brought up in book one. We don’t learn how all of them are involved just yet but I have a lot of theories. I adored Riot and Grace but the introduction and getting to know Bullet was definitely one of the highlights of this book. His character and how his relationship started to blossom and grow with Grace wasn’t what I expected and I loved it. I have theories on who the next two guys are but we don’t know who, how and when it’s going to happen.

I was unable to put this book down because I needed to know who was in the relationship, the purpose of all this and the answers to mysteries that the characters and Bullet had mentioned. Little prophecies, a curse and instructions that we are waiting to see unfold.

As I read the last chapter I was excited to finally get some answers for at least one person and I was left with no answers and even more questions. Perfect way to get me hooked and ready for the next book.

I adore this author’s style of writing, she always has great world building, I love her sense of humor and I feel like her characters just come to life. I cannot wait to see where the rest of this goes and to see if my theories are correct.

this was so boring omfg. way longer than it needed to be and i don’t think i enjoy being introduced to only one love interest per book then having the previous love interest disappear in order to make the new one seem like the best thing ever. i loved riot in his book and that extended into this one but i just didn’t vibe with bullet. i’m really looking forward to dare’s book but of course that’s #4🥲
