Catching Fire

Love is overrated and I have the third-degree relationship burns to prove it, courtesy of my ex. I’m done with romance.

Then I meet the world’s funniest, sexiest lady firefighter and all my “staying single” plans go up in smoke.

The problem? Faith’s even more gun shy when it comes to love than I am.

But I have a plan.
First, I’ll prove to Faith that she can trust me with her heart.
Next, I’ll keep showing up until she believes it.

In just a few weeks, we’re both falling hard, and I’m positive I’ve found the woman I've been waiting for.

Then my past comes back to haunt me in a way I never imagined possible, putting my future at risk. But I'm not about to give up on forever with Faith, not without one hell of a fight.

Bliss River is one of those fictional small towns I would love to live in, and I knew a story about a tough female fire fighter finding love in this setting would be great. This one definitely didn’t disappoint!

I love these Whitehouse siblings and really enjoyed watching Mick find love with a strong, tough lady with a tender side and a big heart. When trouble comes to town, Mick and Faith's mettle will be tested as a prediction from a fortune teller echos in their minds.

With fun side characters, trademark humor, plenty of steam and lots of tugs to the heart, you'll love Mick and Faith's story and your visit to Bliss River!

Book 2 in the Hometown Heat series. This was previously released as To Tame a Wild Fireman but has been rewritten and revised. I never had the luxury of reading the previous story so when I was coming at this story with fresh eyes and let me just say, I loved it. You are taken back to Bliss River where you meet Faith and Mick. They have known each other for a long time and have been friends but neither can stop thinking about one kiss that they shared. The chemistry and attraction between them was so intense but they were friends and didn’t want a relationship thanks to past issues with others. However, feelings like they shared could and would not be denied. Lili has created a wonderful world that will pull you in and have you rooting for the couples to have the perfect HEA.

Another fantastic addition to the Bliss River world. Catching Fire is the second book in Lili Valente’s Hometown Heat series and it was everything I expected Mick Whitehouse to be. I loved him so much. He was such an amazing character who was always willing to help. He was patient and honest and those were qualities that Faith needed in order to expose her own vulnerability. Faith Miller, the only female firefighter in Bliss River who grew up around her guy cousins, was tough. She grew up skeptical of love as she has seen the idea of it destroy her mother over and over. Faith didn’t want to let love destroy her as well and for the most part, she had been able to avoid it - until Mick Whitehouse.

Mick and Faith didn’t stand a chance. The chemistry between the two was magnetic. I truly enjoyed seeing their friendship grow and eventually bloom into so much more than they expected. Mick and Faith had something special and the honesty and communication between the two (even when difficult) was really important. The two of them were so skeptical about love and relationships due to bad experiences, but in the end they couldn’t stand in their own way, especially with the meddling of their friends and families.

This is one of those books that I both read and listened. While I enjoyed doing both, let me tell you that listening to Lili Valente and Teddy Hamilton as Faith and Mick is a whole different experience. I have listened to Lili and Teddy narrate countless of times and I am so floored by their talent to be able to always bring a unique voice and personality to their characters. You truly forget you are listening to either of them and truly become consumed by them as the characters they are playing. For me, that’s the best part about listening to them narrate.

I cannot wait for Lili to bring us back to Bliss River, because I know the next one is going to be HOT. This is a small town that does not lack in steaminess, chemistry, and passion.

Oh Faith and Mick, I knew I was going to love you two. This was the perfect slow burn tease that did not disappoint with a storyline that I could not stop listening to.

Faith is a force to be reckoned with. The only female firefighter in her small town, she has worked hard to be where she’s at. Faith has been so used to depending on herself that when Mick comes back into town, she’s thrown off her routine. Mick is the brother of Maddy and Naomi who’s back home after graduating college. Mick is smitten by Faith and asks her out. When she needs to leave for an emergency, he volunteers to go with her and all the chemistry they have, sparks to life.

Mick is amazing. His attitude and personality are just so perfect. He’s there for his sisters and does what he can to help his friends. Mick immediately stepped up to help Faith when she needed it and was completely honest with her. Faith grew so much as a person with a little help from Mick. She needed that push and he was there to do it.

The audiobook version of this story is great. I love Lili narrating her own stories, it adds a special touch to the story. Teddy Hamilton was great, per the norm. He was the perfect choice to narrate Mick.

Note: An ARC was provided by the author.

Ooh, but how I enjoyed seeing these main characters try to resist each other, even though it was pretty obvious that their connection was of a whole different level than with anyone else they've ever been with. Faith was very independent and used to relying on no one other than herself. So, when you've got someone like Mick who helps people simply because it's the kind of person he is and he's a whole lot of interested, well, it has Faith battling between needing to be on guard and wanting to let her guard down. I liked seeing how much growth these two had throughout Catching Fire, which gets four stars.

I loved this book! Faith and Mick had this attraction right from the start but with Faith she never felt like a girl should feel because of her mother. She always has this tuff exterior image going but inside she was lonely. Mick was running from relationships because of his ex’s but was drawn to Faith. Well their story is a struggle from friends to lovers but they continue to fight for them and sorry makes you love them and continue to cheer them on. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I was first introduced to the work of Lili Valente when she co-wrote a series l loved with one of my favorite authors. When I’ve tried some of her solo works I’ve found mixed results. After seven chapters of this book I wasn’t certain I would finish it. First of all you have to understand that unlike most contemporary romance readers I’m a guy so what most female readers have no issues with may bother me. And at least in the early goings I found the male lead Mick Whitehouse annoying because he was another male protagonist in a contemporary romance who was in denial of his feelings and couldn’t get out of his own way to let love happen even when he found the right woman Faith Miller, and everything about her and the way she made him feel made that obvious. Because Mick got hooked up with a needy manipulative girl in his last two years of college he’s leery of getting into another serious relationship even when his feelings for Faith are obvious even to him. Of course he fights them because that’s what emotionally stunted male protagonists do in romance books. Thankfully by Chapter 8 or 9 with a nudge from Faith, Mick gets his head out of his ass and Mans up. Sorry ladies if you find that term offensively sexist. From that point on the story is mostly Mick and Faith falling deeper in love.
Now I really like our female protagonist Faith Miller from the get go. Faith has always been a bit of a tomboy preferring to hang out with her older male cousins four wheeling, hunting etc. rather than dressing up and flirting with boys. She’s watched her mother chase after her dream of a Prince Charming only to be used and disappointed her entire life leaving Faith leery of giving too much of herself to a man. She’s terrified of repeating her mother’s mistakes. Faith is a firefighter who works with her older cousins, (one of whom is engaged to Mick’s oldest sister Naomi). She’s only had one serious relationship in her life and that was almost more platonic than romantic. Faith finds herself so attracted to the handsome Mick that she’s desperate to stay away from him. They shared a kiss under the mistletoe at Christmas and now its New Years Eve and she’s looking for some random guy to kiss to make her forget Mick’s lips which have been constantly on her mind. She finds a guy who would seem to check all of her boxes but it just doesn’t do it for her. When she has one too many glasses of punch Mick comes to her aide and takes care of her until the next morning. She admits to Mick her attraction to him and although he almost immediately shoots himself in the foot he recovers and they begin a courtship falling quickly in love. But their love is put to the test when Mick’s ex reappears. Faith freaks out momentarily but thanks to some tough love advice from her cousin Jamieson (male lead of the next book Playing with Fire (which the author spends an entire chapter in this book besides giving us the first two chapters at the end of this story to sell us on it). I had a couple of minor issues with this story. I would have liked to have seen Faith put up some boundaries between herself and her mother. I would have liked to have known what it was Mick did for a living long before it was revealed. I am having a hard time understanding how a brainiac like Mick who is 24 years old graduated college less than a year ago? We’re told in this story that Naomi Whitehouse the oldest Whitehouse sibling is a billionaire several times over but we’re never told how she made her fortune. We’re also told she miscarried a baby at some point but we’re not told whether that left her infertile which is implied since she’s trying to adopt, or what her relationship with that baby’s father was.
Ultimately this was a good if not exceptional book. I felt by not reading the first book in the series Naomi and Jake’s story I was definitely missing some details about not only Naomi’s but Mick’s and their sister Maddie’s backstories. Some of which was slowly revealed as this story went on but not all. It was low angst and slow burn. I guess I liked it enough that I’ll probably go back and read the first book in the series and the next one which is already available.

**Audiobook Review**

Catching Fire is a fun-loving, feel-good small town romance that makes your heart jump with joy, gets your cheeks flushed with all that sexy hot tensioned sizzle and keeps you in momentary suspense with some drama.

Lili Valente has a way of keeping her listeners/readers engaged. Her stories just flow so easily, make you swoon and leave you with a full heart at the end.

Faith and Mick have known each other since they were kids. Faith is the only female firefighter in Bliss River. I admire her for being all tough, looking after herself and not shy of saying what she thinks. Mick is the younger brother of Naomi and Maddie and the small-town Fixer Upper. Faith & Mick shared a kiss at the charity event which is still stuck in their heads. Even though they are trying to distract themselves with other dates, they can´t stop thinking about each other. Yet, they do not want anything serious because between them they have their fair share of trust issues and unstable, unhealthy relationships. Although trying to go down the road of friendship, it soon becomes pretty obvious that it´s sparks-city between them and they are catching fire. Seemingly heading towards happy bliss Mick’s past is coming back to haunt him and may destroy everything.

I loved that Lili and Teddy kept the same tone of voice for these characters they displayed in All Fired up (Book 1). The chemistry and passion they put into them just make you swoon. I mentioned this before but Lili also narrating her own books makes you think she is that character in the book and whoa her male voice gave me goosebumps. I think one of my favourite Teddy scenes, apart from him being all kinds of sweet and making you weak in the knees with all that swoon, is when he was telling his sisters to stay out of his business. Such a delightful aural treat!

You just know from the glimpse we got into Maddie & Jameson´s story that the next one in this series is going to be a steamy one. Can´t wait for Playing with Fire.

Let’s talk about “Catching Fire by Lili Valente”, second book in the Hometown Heat series.
🚒
A fast way to reach my heart in the book world is when the female character is strong, smart and especially nailed in a male-dominated profession. Since the first book is this series, Faith took my attention, she was a wonderful friend and now is time for her own story. He is a damn great firefighter and now she heading for the trip of her life with Mike Whitehouse.

But first, I need to say something, the Whitehouse siblings… they have the worse luck with their past relationships. Seriously, you need to read this series to find out why. Each book is about one of them and I can’t wait to read the last one. Anyway, Mick is healing off a bad break up, but when we sees Faith it seems this wall starts to crumble.

He values her strength, her mind and body. As he said, “I can’t imagine anything sexier, actually, than knowing the woman I’m with can totally take care of herself but is choosing to let me take care of her instead”. I’m totally in love with them both, took some time to Faith let go of her issues, but then they were so perfect together. I love hot supportive, understanding and compassionate they were. They trip to New Orleans was a troop, I wish I could go there too.

They also had some steamy scenes, which proved their connection were emotional and physical. I expected the climax to be something like that, but I was totally taken by surprise with the motives and why. And from there on, although a couple of things were left unanswered to me, I absolutely loved the end. I liked that there were some news about Naomi and Jake and the beginning of Maddie story. Great series so far.

Catching Fire

Lili Valente has been one of my must read authors for years. That, in combination with it being a small town romance, made Catching Fire a definite addition to my reading library. I first met Mick and Faith in book one of this series and was so excited to finally get their story. Ms. Valente definitely delivered another fantastic and entertaining romance.

Mick and Faith live in the small town of Bliss River and have known each other a long time. But after one unexpected kiss which they shared under the Mistletoe at the Fireman’s Ball, neither Mick nor Faith can get that moment out of their minds. Though they both have experiences in their past that they have a hard time overcoming, they ultimately agree to spend time together. But Mick and Faith both agree to keep things simple as neither of them is looking for any kind of a long-term relationship. But the more time they spend together, they both begin to open up to each other which leads Mick and Faith to the realization that the feelings they are sharing go deeper than they ever expected. As their feelings grow stronger, both Mick and Faith realize that the “keep it simple” relationship they initially agreed upon may, in fact, be so much more.

Mick and Faith shared such an intense chemistry and the sparks of love they shared set my kindle ablaze. Catching Fire is a fun and entertaining story of learning to open up and placing your trust in someone which will finally lead your hearts to a love that will last forever.

Although Catching Fire is the second book of this series, it can be read as a standalone. But I guarantee once you read it, you won’t be able to stop there. I love this series and I can’t wait for Maddie and Jamison’s book.

*Contains Spoilers*

Mick Whitehouse and Faith Miller have known each other since they were in kindergarten. Besides Faith picking on him throughout their whole lives, they didn’t really know each other. A stolen moment under a mistletoe has them wanting more, throwing aside the idea of “staying single”.

I loved Mick, he made me swoon and gave me so many feels. Faith on the other hand was… I don’t know there was just something about her that I didn’t like and I can’t figure out what it is. What I did like was that she wasn’t a damsel in distress because we all know Mick didn’t need another one of those after his crazy ex. But she was a bit flighty.

I also felt like the Maddie and Jamison POV “moment” was a little awkward for me.

Although I loved Mick, I found this book a bit boring at times. It was lacking something. There was no epic scene where they confessed their love for one another after dating for 5 weeks. Just a random, “immediately feeling at home because this is where the man I love lives and breathes.” And a “Do you have any idea how much I love you?” and I’m a bit surprised she said it so easily considering how hesitant she was going into it because of her fear of becoming her mother.

Lmao and it’s messed up they got Mick to adopt his ex girlfriends baby. Lmao I didn’t think Mick or Faith was ready for a baby but whatever, It’s not like they were dating for only 5 weeks or anything and decides to raise a baby together.

This series wasn’t for me so I don’t think I will be reading Maddie’s and Jamison’s book.

**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

This is the second book in this series and probably could be read as a stand alone, but it does read better if you have read the previous book.

Mick Whitehouse has had a tough time in college with his manipulative ex and now is back home with his sisters, looking out for them and helping them with the opening and maintance of their new bakery.

The night that his sister Naomi and her boyfriend Jake get engaged is the night that he finally gets to kiss Faith for the first time.

Faith is a little commitment shy after watching her mother with countless failed relationships, the best thing with this attraction to Mick, is that he too is not looking for commitment at the moment so they agree to just have fun as they feel the sparks between them.

When Faith has to go rescue her mother, Mick goes along and they find that they have lots of fun together and that they really like each others company.

Getting back however it is not long before there is a spanner in the works and both have to fight for what they want and for the best possible outcome. Both sides have family that help them see sense and stick up for them when it matters.

Another really good book and I cannot wait to see how things develop with Maddie and Jamison's story.

Feels good to be back in Bliss River! Mick and Faith shared a kiss at a party. Mick loved it, but it scared the crap out of Faith. Having seen the heartbreak side of love, Faith wanted no parts of it. Sure, she noticed how hot Mick was when she'd see him around time, but she was busy working as the town's lone firewoman. Mick has always liked Faith, but he's had a bit of love gone bad in his past, and he's in no rush to start falling in love. Mick coaxes Faith to go on a date with him, and although they had a great time, Faith was still a little skiddish. Mick won't be deterred, and slowly, Faith comes around...a bit.

Things seem to be going fine between Mick and Faith. Both are taking their time getting to know each other. When events from both their pasts come back to the present, possibly stalling...or ending their budding relationship. The supporting characters (main characters in previous books) play such a vital part in all these stories, you really get to know them, and I love that.

I really love this series. Who doesn't like small time love? Usually me, but Lili has won me over with several of her small town series. They seem like such wonderful places I'd love to visit with some girlfriends.

Lili is joined by Teddy Hamilton as narrators, and they are wonderful!

Catching Fire is the second book in the Hometown Heat series and it’s time for Faith and Mick’s story. Mick has been unable to stop thinking about Faith since their kiss in All Fired Up. Faith is adamant that she does not want a relationship so they decide to be friends, but will they be able to resist the simmering attraction just below the surface?

Both Faith and Mick have a past that has colored their views of relationships and they are both a bit jaded. I loved how open and honest they were with each other about their issues and how supportive they were of one another. They truly built a strong friendship that lead to love.

I alternated between the audio book and the kindle version of this story and the audio was so good. Narrated by Lili Valente and Teddy Hamilton, they both did a fantastic job of bringing the characters and story to life. Both are favorites of mine and they are magic together.

I absolutely love the characters Lili Valente has developed in the small town of Bliss River and Catching Fire is no exception. It’s a fun romantic comedy with a lot of heart and laughs with a side of steam.

Catching Fire is sweet story about Mick and Faith. Faith is the strong, independent, female firefighter whose a true hero in every way. She has had the worst role models when it comes to love, and as far as she can keep love from herself the better she is. Mick is the little town playboy that has dated half of the single women in town. Coming out of a poisonous relationship, Mick wants to have his fun with no strings attached. However, he can’t seem to get Faith out of his head. Finally, a woman that has Mick all twisted and infatuated. Will Faith give Mick the time of day to see if the sparks that are between them are real or just lust?

Love Mick and Faith's honesty and insecurities. It's a beautiful love story between two people who had given up on love. Lili Valente did an incredible job once again and I love how she brought Jamison's and Maddie's story to perk our interest for the next book that's in store for us.

This is the second book in the series and one I was waiting for. After the little tease we got of Mick and Faith in the previous book I couldn't wit to dive into this one. I couldn't put this book down. I loved Faith and Mick. I loved their banter. This book definitely had me laughing. I loved the humor. This book also had a lot of heart. Faith and Mick's pasts have made them leery of relationships. They don't want anything serious, but with these it may just be unrealistic because feelings are all too real. Mick made me swoon because the things he does to me are romantic. This book took unexpected turns that made me gasp a little. This was a great small town read. It made me fall a little more in love with the town since the first book. This one made the wait so worth it for Mick and Faith's story. I'm going to be eagerly awaiting the next book!

Sweet and steamy, friends to lovers romance…

I love going back to Bliss River where small town does not mean big problems can’t be found. Faith and Mick were friends and rocking that boat meant uncertainty and drama and all the love…
Being a firefighter doesn’t mean you are invincible or not able to be hurt. When a tentative kiss started them down a different path, neither was looking for long-term and Faith was particularly reluctant. Best-laid plans meant Mick was going to have to up his game (and his game was good to start with!) to show Faith he was worth the time and effort. And her love… His charm was irresistible and Faith deserved the best…

At times sweet and steamy, others funny and serious, their story had it all. Throw some unexpected twists at the end and voila – added to my ‘pick me up’ re-read shelf!

*I happily reviewed this story

MICK! MICK! MICK! Ok, now that I got that out of my system. I've been waiting for Mick's story and I couldn't be happier with this book. Mick and Faith have relationship baggage, but their story is sweet and sexy. It's a feel good love story with a nice dose of angst but it's worth it!

Mick has just come out of a needy relationship and he doesn't want to be a hero anymore and Faith's mother had so many relationships that she's afraid of losing herself to a man. I love that Faith is a strong willed character who says what she's thinking and can take care of herself. I love that Mick is vulnerable and shares his feeling with Faith.

I love the way Lili sets up the next book. You care about all of these characters and while you're still smiling and happy with Mick and Faith you almost don't notice that you're cheering for Maddie and Jamison. I can't wait for the next one!

Wonderfully funny and touching Rom-com! The author takes us back to cute little Bliss River again and its exactly the relaxing trip we need on a hot afternoon. I loved Faith's quirkiness and fun nature. Both she and Mick show amazing self awareness, they know and acknowledge their individual hang ups straight off and I found that really refreshing to see. And good thing Faith is on the fire department, because together they are combustible! Their is just so much to love about these two, you will totally fall in love with their honesty and find yourself smiling for no reason, they just leave you with that feeling! Can't wait for Maddie and Jamison, I'll be looking forward to my next Bliss River visit!

This one is even better than the first!!!! Eeek! I hated to have to put it down to do responsible adult things!

I really truly love a resistant heroine and the hero who swoonily wins her over! I had a goofy smile on my face for this entire book. I started to tear up a couple times. I remarked out loud several times, and one time, I gasped and clutched my pearls and said, "Ohhhh noooo!" But oh yes. It was perfect. And surprising. And amazing. And I can't wait for the next one!

These are stand alone novels in the same world....sharing a world with the Bliss River books, as well! These characters are amazing, and I can picture their small, amazing town. All the friends are fantastic, and I love getting snippets of the HEAs from the previous books!!!

Mick and Faith are a slow burn that is worth the wait! I knew from All Fired Up that there was a connection there and I would love their story.

Faith is a strong, independence female in a male-dominated industry. She doesn't want or need a relationship BUT she can't stop thinking about that kiss with Mick.

Mick was burned by a bad relationship but that kiss isn't far from his mind either. Mick and Faith are drawn to each other and can't stay away. He is so sweet and wants to take care of her (even though she doesn't need it). He's her rock when they need it the most. There is balance in their relationship and they help hold each other up and make each other stronger.

A great read by Lili Valente!

Small town romance w/ a dash of heat.

This is an enjoyable story. Mick and Faith are very likable characters and I love that Faith is the firefighter in this one. I also like that we got a glimpse of their story in Book 1 and we get a glimpse of Maddie's story for Book 3. These are my favorite kind of connected stories - they stand alone, but give you glimpses of the other characters and/or set up the next storyline.

Both Mick and Faith are gun shy about relationships for very different reasons, but boy are those reasons understandable. It's clear early on though that this relationship is just more. Mick being the youngest sibling will have to endure a little bit of his sisters' meddling as well, but not too bad. There is one scene where I just fell in love with Maddie - you go girl!!

This is a enjoyable read with some drama thrown in, but nothing too angsty.

I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.

What a great story! I really loved the honesty between Mick and Faith! They had a few false starts, but even when it might not be what the other person wants to hear, each is very honest about their feelings and their struggles. The smolder and chemistry is there throughout their slow burn relationship, which made the build up that much more fantastic. While at times you could tell that these two were on the younger side, they had a maturity that shone through, especially when faced with the inevitable challenge all romance couples go through. And they were a fun couple….I would have loved to been on that road trip with them!
Lili Valente just continues to write stories that keep me entertained and coming back for more!

Catching Fired was HOT HOT HOT! I love Lili's books but the Hometown Heat series are just becoming a new favorite. Faith is a woman that is doing what she can in life. Mick has a heart of gold and loves to be there for his family.

I loved these two get together. Faith was really cautious and Mick wanted to show her the best that life has when falling in love. The chemistry and friendship just grows. I fell for this story and excited to read the next book!

I was honoured to receive an advanced copy of this book and this is my honest review.

Faith Miller is a firefighter at a small town fire station and Mick Whitehouse shared a kiss with Faith a few months before and he is hooked. Both have to deal with some huge baggage. Mick was manipulated by ex so much when he was at college he then cam home. Faith is commitment phobic because her mother had so many failed relationships she just doesn't want to believe in love even though she can't help feeling what she does for Mick.

This book hooks you from start to finish definitely worth a book hangover!

My favorite story in the series so far. I was so excited to read Mick and Faith's romance, but surprisingly, Maddie turned out to be my favorite character. Her chapter was the one that made me teary-eyed. And when she stepped up and defended her brother? Watch out! I loved that so much! My favorite quotes: "...that's how I think a good relationship should be. Both people *can* do things on their own. They're fully capable. But it's easier together, instead of harder. Sweeter instead of more stressful." and "Scared is okay, as long as I don't let fear convince me to run away from my most important person."

Catching Fire was unlike any other book I've read. Both Faith and Mick have original backstories and this book works with so many tropes and makes them work seamlessly. It was so easy to fall in love with Mick, he was fun, happy, and of course obsessed with Faith. That made his love for her shine so bright in all of their scenes.

I loved that Faith had normal fears from her childhood and previous relationship. It made her relatable and her story have so much heart. When her and Mick hit the bumps in the road, it was Faith who had to decide if she should let her feelings or fear win!

Another adventure at Bliss River that left me in love, once again!! This story has Faith, a firefighter and Mick, someone she's known since childhood.

Faith is all miss independent, I don't need anyone. Then there's Mick who loves helping everyone. What will happen when feelings are stirred up between these two? Can Faith let go, and let someone love her and look out for her?

I loved these two characters! They are both fun, sweet and need to be together and give into that chemistry!! Great story!!

Just when Mick and Faith think that they have it all and are about to start their lives, Mick's wack job of an ex comes back and pregnant. Faith doesn't think that she can handle it, but Jamison helps her to realize that she can if she loves Mick, Mick believes wack job, and Naomi is assisting but advises him to get a paternity test (she worried me for a bit) which scared the ex into trying to make sure baby comes out early proving baby wasn't Mick's. But all ends well when Naomi and Jake decide to adopt.
