Mountain Rails of Old, third book in the Family History Mystery Series.Digger Browning never paid much attention to the abandoned cottage and its long-gone occupants until she accompanied her friend Marty, who wanted to photograph it for a news story. Everything changed when Uncle Benjamin made a huge discovery nearby. What really happened to Samantha and her eight-year old daughter twelve years ago? If it hadn’t been for a growling raccoon, Digger might not have badgered enough people to find out.
Her friend Holly doesn’t like the ancestors Digger found for her, and Marty thinks she’s distanced herself rather than level with him about how she feels. Digger doesn’t realize that her search for a station on the Underground Railroad will cross paths with efforts to find out what happened to Samantha. And that path doesn’t lead to a safe haven.
Join Digger, Marty, and Uncle Benjamin as they sometimes operate at cross-purposes to solve old mysteries and unlock the mountain’s secrets. Western Maryland at its elusive best.
This is the most delightful book I have read involving a ghost (or two). There's also a little romance, small town drama, old mystery, and family conflict. What's not to like? The third book in the series finds Digger more established in her business and relationships but still sometimes beset by uncertainty. Uncle Benjamin is a delightful character and together they address the ten-year-old disappearance of Samantha. Highly recommended!
Elaine Orr totally captures the scene with her first line. And captures me as well. Ms Orr's writing is as fine as you will ever hope to read. And her books have carried me away into a family of friends that has adventures together . This story captures family and some of the joy at finding family history.
I read all three in the series. Book 1 was by far the best! Definitely Read Book 1. Books 2 and 3 were a bit far fetched with book 3 not being worth the time to read. Although these were not offered free, Book 3 was a waste of the inexpensive cost.
A mysterious disappearance of a mother and daughter plus a ghost then add a hissing raccoon and you have the basis of another Digger obsession! Mix in a confused and concerned boyfriend to end up with this - what I consider the best in the series so far.
Mountain Rails of Old is excellent and unexpected. I love when I can't guess where a book is going and that is pretty standard with Elaine Orr's books. the over all mystery, the extra special element that Uncle Benjamin discovered, and the romance kept me deeply involved. My favorite of this series so far.
