It’s a tale as old as time.
I’ve crushed on my brother’s best friend since I sprouted hairs on the unmentionables. Once upon a time, he was straight, until he wasn’t… and talk about bad timing.

I feel like there are two key elements in this book, the first one is the romance between childhood friends Ross and Dan, and the second one is the exploration of their lives in a small town in Queensland, Australia. Honestly I loved the whole Australian setting incl. Australian vocabulary, with depicting how wild bushfires one day and flooding the next day are affecting people living there (Dan was rural volunteer firefighter).
Both Ross and Dan were really likeable characters. They were good people, so caring and protective, and secretly pining for each other for a very long time. They danced around each other to the point of frustration (mine and their as well), they had even half given up on the possibility of being together as a couple before they actually admitted their feelings. That's the point where I admit, I'd have preferred them coming together much sooner, it seemed a little bit dragging in this regard. I can't even say it was a slow burn, because it wasn't, they knew each other since forever, loved each other secretly, just wouldn't come out... Finally fear for the other in a crisis they were fighting made them go all in. Overall it was a really nice feel-good love story.

What a warm and lovable narrative. I fell in love with Ross and Dan. Just like with the awesome supportive, respectively brother and best, Craig.
We are witness to how people cope with the extreme heat and rain in Queensland, Australia.
Citizens who are willing to fight the fire and floods. Gosh, it was exciting, frightening, and entertaining to watch.
Dan is back after years of being away. Best friends with Craig and his two years younger brother Ross, all in the begin thirties. There are strong feelings between Dan and Ross, they never act on them, never sure if it’s mutual.
It’s a bit heartbreaking to watch them being around each other day after day and try their best to be friends because that’s the important part, friends.
Thank goodness for loose lips and dare.
What a magnificent story, utterly captivating, warm, comfortable, with extremely lovable characters, they stole my heart.
Come hurt comfort moments made this story even more enthralling.
Recommendation is worthy!

It's a slow burn romance about two friends who were secretly pining for each other for a long time. It was a little frustrating because the reader had to watch them circle around one another while they decided if it was worth it to accept and confess their love for each other or just to forever hold their silence. AHHHH! I began to want to strangle them both:) There was sweet moments, a dash of angst and several good action scenes. The chemistry between these two is undeniable and the development of their relationship from being friends to lovers was done really well. I would have to call it a really good read and since I am famous for rereading books that I really like...this one I will diffidently go on my reread list!

This story was originally part of the When the Smoke Clears charity anthology. It has now been expanded into a full-length novel. I picked it up as soon as I saw it was brother’s best friend trope, which is one of my favorites. I was even more pleased to find mutual pining. Though this book wasn’t without a few small issues, I did enjoy it.
Told in alternating first person POV, we really get to know both characters well. The author did a great job of letting us into their heads and really seeing where they were both coming from, so their progression from friends to lovers really felt natural. Ross is the little brother, who always tagged along with Dan and Craig, but he never felt out of place. I loved Ross’ relationship with his brother as well. Dan had an equally good relationship with Craig, but a little more baggage from his time living in Brisbane and the relationships he’s had there. He needed to work through all of that to be in a place where he was ready to move forward into a romantic relationship. I particularly thought that Seymour did a good job showing how things were progressing between them, while also showing the reader what was holding Dan and Ross back from taking things in a new direction.

Beautiful small town romance.
Gah, Ross and Dan marched their way into my heart and refuse to leave!
They are such wonderful characters and they way they have crushed on each other for so long is adorable. Dan, a carpenter and volunteer firefighter, only just returned to their small town after many years away and he last saw Ross, the high school librarian, on a visit home 2 years prior. Dan also happens to be besties with Ross’s brother.
I loved that they are in their 30’s and mature so there’s no silly miscommunication issues, etc to derail them. There is a dash of angst but it’s more to do with the natural disasters they are confronted with and a bit of anxiety for Ross when an unpleasant person from his past reappears.
This is such a sweet engaging, medium heat romance that had me smiling so hard for the much longed for HEA. My community fought the East Gippsland bush fires for over 200 days and I appreciate the way the author captured the physical and mental strain this placed not just on the volunteer firefighters but all community members.

A gripping slow burn romance by a talented Australian writer.
The way the author wrote about the growing love between the characters, while adding in the tension of the disasters (fires and floods), was what made a compelling read.
Dan and Ross were written in a way that you could place them in real life.

This was a really good book by a new to me author. I love brother's best friends & friends to lovers books, so the tropes were perfect for me. It was well written and kept me turning the pages. It's not as high heat as most books I read, but the story was done so well, I didn't even notice.

Ross has loved Dan, his brother, Craig's best friend it seems like forever. Dan had left small town life for the big smoke, Brisbane and after more than a decade has come back. The attraction is sizzling, but Dan doesn't want to ruin friendships, like his last relationship did. They dance around each other until the unpredictable weather causes dangerous situations. Dan finally acts. There is a slow burn, medium heat romance with low angst. Very believable Aussie characters and situations. Loved it!

High Alert is a really sweet friends to lovers romance by has a strong environmental message in there too.
Ross has crushed on his brother's best friend, Dan, for years and now he's moved back to town and they have a chance to reconnect. What he doesn't know is that he's not the only one who has been crushing. It feels like no time has passed since they last saw each other and their friendship builds back up, even as they are both fighting their desire for more. A misunderstanding nearly derails things but a bushfire that threatens their home brings that moment of clarity that turns out really sweet.
I love these two together. It feels effortless between them as they spend more time together, becoming a couple. There's a neat level there that simmers as they endeavour to take things slowly, also helped with his much is going on for them both as well. An increase in bushfires means that Dan, a rural volunteer firefighter, is constantly called out and Ross helps out with the local community where he can, including at the library where he works in the local high school. Their romance is pretty low angst, apart from the beginning where they nearly talk themselves out of things, and then it goes very well for them, relationship wise. There's the big of drama with Dan working as a volunteer firefighter and one of Ross's high school bully turns up in an unlikely place but that takes a different than expected as well.
The environmental issues here are becoming increasingly dangerous for communities every year and Becca has written an intense but thoughtful story that reflects how fires and flooding are affecting people.
Another recommended read from this author with a wonderful romance with an engaging storyline.

My absolute favourite book of this author so far!
There were a couple of name switches that I found a little annoying (I'm a stickler for good editing), but otherwise, I really enjoyed reading this. I liked both MCs and I absolutely loved the Australian setting! Most of all though, I enjoyed how equal Ross and Dan were, how badass and vulnerable at times, how different and how similar. I loved the secondary characters and I have a ton of stories I want to read about this cast: not least of all how Nick changed from his high school persona into the person he is at the time of this story, but also about Craig, about Alec, about... well. Basically everyone.
Yes, this was a definite win for me!

Simple love
This one had a little angst. Which I love. I loved that it was just a simple journey to love. No drama besides Mother Nature. Just a sweet mosey from being friends to being each other’s everything. The writing was great, the smexy… if you are looking for smexy this is not the book. The one scene that did happen was more sweet than toe curling. The side characters where ok also. The only complaint I have was somethings were written off page which really drives me insane. There was this build up to discovering each other’s feeling but all the good parts we get told that it happened. Not cool.

High Alert was originally written as a short story and later expanded into the book it is now. I immediately fell in love with both of the MC’s, Ross and Dan, because they are just so likeable. I don’t often pick up books about second chance love, so this was a change of pace that I definitely needed. They were both so adorable and I was rooting for them from the beginning.
My only negative for the book was that I thought it a bit too long. I loved their love and could have dealt with the plot coming together much sooner.
Overall, I recommend this for people who are not looking for angst and want a feel good, happy story.

Trigger warnings: bushfire, flooding, bullying, homophobia

This was pretty cute. It's a brother's best friend romance, where Ross has had a crush on his brother's best friend, Dan, for years, and when Dan returns to town, it becomes apparent that he has feelings for Ross too. I was sold (obviously) because Ross is a school librarian and the small town Queensland setting seemed intriguing.
This is billed as a low angst story, and it definitely is in terms of their relationship. I just wish it had been a little further from reality in terms of climate change, the 2019-2020 fire season and the 2020 Queensland floods because OOF.
Also, the word "cum" was used a truly unnecessary number of times. Just saying.

Lovely read! This is a friend's to lovers OR brother's best friend! I live that this started as friends and then developed. This had some worrisome times for the characters which kept me as the reader engaged. This also has some onery livestock! I definitely recommend!

Long time friends
I love this author’s books! I will read anything she puts out there. This is another great low angst story about two guys who have known each other forever and have both been afraid to act on it. It’s really sweet and also has a healthy dose of forgiveness thrown in towards another character l. A great book and one I would read again!

High Alert is a very sweet, low angst friends to lovers story that incorporates some real environmental messages.. It was originally described as sweet with heat, and while there were a few qualifying heat scenes, it definitely steered way closer to sweet.

High Alert is a low angst, feel-good romance by new-to-me Australian author, Becca Seymour. High Alert is a well written, childhood friends to lovers/brother's best friend romance with likeable characters, humour, and an action filled, of the natural disaster variety, plot.
The author beautifully conveyed the history between the three main characters: Ross, his brother Craig, and Craig's best friend, Dan. These three have a deeply established friendship. The memories and flashbacks allow the reader to learn about that relationship without being bogged down in too much detail, and sets up the romance between Ross and Dan.
As a proud Aussie myself, I'm so happy to see more and more books being set in Australia and the growing popularity of Australian authors. However, I will admit that when picking up a new author with a book based Down Under there is always a moment of trepidation. As modern Australian society is so similar to that of the US or UK, sometimes authors, in the desperate attempt to make sure the reader knows they are in Australia, revert to the use of stereotypes and/or the cringe-worthy use of the largely extinct Ocker dialect.
There is nothing to fear here though, High Alert was written using a natural Australian vocabulary and speech rhythm without relying on stereotypes. Instead, the author's gorgeous descriptions of the Australian bush were more than enough to ensure the reader knew exactly where they were. This Australian emphasis was also made through the use of natural disasters. Australia is particularly well known for adopting the: wild bushfires one day, flooding the next, approach to natural disasters, and this was used effectively in this book. I loved the theme of regeneration; that from destruction comes regrowth, which ultimately sums up the Aussie spirit and is a significant theme of this book.

I very much enjoyed my first experience with Becca Seymour's work. I found her an engaging writer. I can't say how much I enjoyed her use of the natural Australian vernacular without resorting to stereotypes or caricatures, and she created a great group of characters in whom I was effortlessly invested.
If you are looking for a feel-good friends-to-lovers romance with very little drama, plenty of action and a good helping of humour, I'd highly recommend reading High Alert.

A sweet, small town romance
High Alert is a slow burn romance about two friends who were secretly pining for each other for a long time. Dan, a carpenter has just recently returned to his small town after many years of being away. Trying to recover from a break up that took its toll on him, Dan meets Ross a school librarian and also the brother of his best friend. He last met him 2 years prior during his last visit. For Ross it has been years but his crush on his brother's best friend Dan has not wavered. Seeing him again only fanned the sleeping embers of emotion into a full blown blaze of love. Circumstances and events has forced the both of them to look and analyze their feelings. All through it all, they must decide is it worth it accept and confess their love for each other or just to forever hold their silence.
The story combines perfectly a slow burn romance between two mature individuals with just the right amount of sweet moments, a dash of angst and action scenes. The chemistry between the two leads is undeniable and the development of their relationship from being friends to lovers was done really well. It felt quite natural. The banter between Dan and Ross, their dialogue and interactions from their snarky quips to their quiet moments is just wonderful.
The appearance of a person from Ross' past that has caused him pain before was dealt in a mature manner and has not been overblown. Seeing Ross slowly form a friendship with his former tormentor would've been off but the author was able to convey the sincerity and authenticity of the growth of that relationship quite nicely.
Overall, High Alert by Becca Seymour is a well-written, engaging medium hear romance with a likeable set of characters and a happily ever after that is well earned.

Trying to recover from a break up that took its toll on him, Dan meets Ross a school librarian and also the brother of his best friend. He last met him 2 years prior during his last visit. For Ross it has been years but his crush on his brother's best friend Dan has not wavered. Seeing him again only fanned the sleeping embers of emotion into a full blown blaze of love. Circumstances and events has forced the both of them to look and analyze their feelings. All through it all, they must decide is it worth it accept and confess their love for each other or just to forever hold their silence.
The story combines perfectly a slow burn romance between two mature individuals with just the right amount of sweet moments, a dash of angst and action scenes. The chemistry between the two leads is undeniable and the development of their relationship from being friends to lovers was done really well. It felt quite natural. The banter between Dan and Ross, their dialogue and interactions from their snarky quips to their quiet moments is just wonderful.
The appearance of a person from Ross' past that has caused him pain before was dealt in a mature manner and has not been overblown. Seeing Ross slowly form a friendship with his former tormentor would've been off but the author was able to convey the sincerity and authenticity of the growth of that relationship quite nicely.
Overall, High Alert by Becca Seymour is a well-written, engaging medium hear romance with a likeable set of characters and a happily ever after that is well earned.

Sweet, fluffy and light brother's best friend
This book is fluffy, reads quickly . My favorite trope is my brother's best friend.
In this book, the characters have doubts about their feelings developing between them which I found a bit childish and could be resolved quickly with minimal conversation and a touch of bravado.
MC2 has some fears of falling in love with his best friend's brother and losing his friends if they don't work out, but manages to get past that easily enough.
The context, the heavy emotions and the lack of sleep make the main characters more emotional, more human, more raw. The second job is realistic and refreshing. The adrenaline is real and the nervousness is high.
I take one star off because despite everything, I feel like I missed a whole chapter about Nick, what was he whispering to his husband when he found out that MC1 AND MC2 were a couple? And finally what was MC1's brother feeling in the hospital? Will he get his own book? I sure hope so....
The ending of the book was way too rushed . Like the author said ok I finished the main plot and now I have to deliver the book quickly. A lot of missing development, a rush of information. MC1 says he's not ready to bring Nick back into his life, but invites him to a dinner with his family? Like What?
Finally, it's all in the context and setting that is its greatest asset and makes this book refreshingly different from other brother's best friend books.

High Alert was the perfect combination of slow burn, heart melting sweetness and action, along with two hot Aussie main characters. Two days later and I still find Dan and Ross seeping into my thoughts! Why did it take me so long to read this author? Rearranging my TBR list right now.
Dan and Ross have been friends forever. And Ross has been in love with Dan just as long. Thinking Dan is straight, Ross moved on with his life, pushing his crush aside, happy to still count Dan as a friend. For Dan, finding out Ross was in a relationship was the push he needed to realize he might not be as straight as he always thought.
When Dan moves back “home,” he is wary of becoming involved with a friend. He’s done that before, with mixed results. He doesn’t want to lose Ross as a friend, or his best friend Craig, who is Ross’ brother, if they start something and it doesn’t work out.
Ross and Dan hang out as just friends, until the electricity zapping between them finally ignites, and they both get on the same page. This book had a wonderful story of friends to lovers, strong family ties, lots of action (fires and floods), and goats. Plus, baby goats! (Who doesn’t love goats?) Plus, lots of sass and snark, which I always love. Dan drugged up on pain killers was a hoot!

Ross and Dan have had feelings for each other for a long time but with Dan being Ross' brother's best friend they have been off limits to each other. For a while life took them apart from each other but they are now back in their home town. But Dan is still reluctant to move their relationship from friendship to more, having made that mistake in the past.
These two both have good hearts and it is obvious from the get go that their hearts are meant for each other. Dan volunteers for the fire and rescue service in their town at the start of wild fire season. The time and courage that these men and women have is inspiring as they try desperately to keep the fires away from homes. The backdrop of the evolving relationship against these fires provides a contrast and shows the men at their best.
I really enjoyed the interactions between Ross and Dan as well as the characters around them. A love born out of friendship always makes me very happy and this made me very happy. It was a sweet and tender read that was definitely heart warming.

A gorgeous Australian country story.
❤️A great start as Ross has a goat which has a fetish for eating nickers, and that's only a small part of Bessie's antics. He was looking forward to having his friend Dan return home again after 2 years.
Humor straight away when both remeet again had me laughing at their teasing.
Dan was 35yrs, where into the carpentry business, and was to start retraining as a firefighter ahead of the fire season.
Ross was a school librarian and never thought he'd see his childhood bully back in town.
This has feelings for both of them as friends wanting to move to being more but afraid to broach the topic in this slow romance.
It's not long before our Aussie summers have an effect on the lands as bushfires reak havoc. Dangers puts a new perspective on things for both characters. Ross as a past situation he has to deal with at school from the moment Nick shows up. This is an all perfect story of the summer season for the firefighters and other heroes doing there thing.
Dramas at the ending but all works out for them in a HEA finish.

This book has immediately moved into my comfort re-reads collection. Dan and Ross and their families slid into my heart in the best ways.
Ross figures out he’s gay as a teen, and at least part of that realization is tied to the crush he has on his brother’s friend, Dan. Dan realizes the same after going off to college. Falling in love is easy, but they want to make sure the relationship will work - lifelong friendships mean that failing could take away too much from them both.
Overall, just a satisfying romance of two adults falling in love. They date. They fight wildfires. They deal with flooding and goat births. There’s a side-plot about Ross’s high-school bullies that ties in well to the main story, too. Every one of these threads drew me in and kept me invested. Just a whole lotta love in this book - between Dan and Ross, between them and their families, between all of them and Australia. Sigh.

Ross has harbored a long-standing crush on his brother's best friend, Dan, a sexy rural firefighter. After years of Dan being straight, he's now out, but the timing for Ross to make a move has always been off. When Ross finally attempts to pursue something, Dan becomes withdrawn, leaving Ross with a bruised heart. Despite the setback, Ross values Dan's friendship, recognizing his inherent goodness, attractiveness, and admirable qualities, which only intensify Ross's desire. When they find themselves in a dangerous situation, it seems like the wrong time for romance. However, Dan appears receptive, leading Ross to decide it's time to reveal his feelings and go all in.
I enjoyed this story with the two men who were drawn together even though one with the other's brother's best friends. Some of the incidents were a bit farcical but the drama around natural disasters was suitably dramatic. I loved the goats. Easy to read and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.

High Alert is Ross and Dan love story, they are wonderful characters and I love their friendship and the chemistry between them, both of them have crushed on each other for so long. Dan moves back to town he is a carpenter and volunteer firefighter and he is Ross’s older brother best friend. Ross is a high school librarian and two years younger than Ross, he always has feelings for Dan but they never get the chance to act on them but now he is back.
I like that both of them are in their’s so their story is low angst, I love the brother’s best friend troupe and also Craig doesn’t have a problem with them being together, there a little angst but is more to do with natural disaster. This was a sweet story with medium heat romance, I’m looking forward to next book!

This was a great BBF slow-burn romance! I really love Becca Seymour and this book did not disappoint. Dan and Ross have been friends for a while before they get together. Dan is Ross’s brother's best friend. But Ross has always thought that Dan was straight so he just kept his feelings to himself and kept the friendship that they had. Dan now works as a volunteer firefighter. They eventually were able to work everything out. It was great to see their romance blossom. This was definitely a slow-burn romance and was almost second to the day-to-day life of what was going on in the MC life. Especially with everything to do with the wildfires and figuring out life. The secondary characters were great as well and filled out the cast wonderfully! I received this book as an ARC from the author and this is my honest review

I love, love, love Ross and Dan! The story is told in alternating first-person POVs, letting the reader really get into their heads. That made their path from friends to lovers so much fun to witness. Ross has known Dan most of his life, but as his older brother Craig’s best friend. So Dan has always been the crush just out of reach… until Dan comes back home. But he comes home with baggage and it takes time for him to find his way, which makes for a great story! The story is captivating, full of warmth and humor and great characters.
And beyond the characters, the setting is breathtaking, even terrifying, in its beauty. Between the fires and the floods, it becomes a story of perseverance as much as it is a love story. It’s a great read!!

One comment taken the wrong way makes Ross not say anything. But maybe Dan wants the same thing as Ross, maybe Dan also has feelings for Ross but is not sure how Ross will take the confession. Will the two ever admit their feelings or will they just keep going ignoring what they truly want?
This was an ok story for me, it was a slow burn, where you watch the two characters kind of dance around each other and then BAM, they become a couple. We do get some good drama, the naughty bits were just ok. I give this 4 stars.

Unfortunately, while Ross is prepared to move, Dan starts to pull away, and Ross isn't sure what has changed. They still act like good friends, but Ross wants more.

I only wanted to strangle them once or twice before they got their acts together; both would stay silent instead of speaking up and if the fires hadn't gotten close, they might have held their silence longer.
