Takeback #2

Dangerous Rescue

Rate this book
Just friends.
I’d repeated the lie so many times I’d almost convinced myself it was the truth.

Our friendship was accidental. A lost phone, a string of text messages that led to a once-a-year birthday text. The real trouble started when we upped the game and called each other. Those phone calls strengthened our connection and solidified our bond. Fourteen years later I was in love with a man who knew me down to the deepest depths of my soul—but I’d never seen him, not even a picture. That was our deal; no last names, no pictures, and the promise to never internet search the other.

I upheld that promise.

River did not.

I was not prepared for the man who showed up at my bookstore. River Kent was tall—so damn tall, good-looking, so damn hot he took my breath, crystal blue eyes, so damn captivating I couldn’t look away. But mostly he was a bossy, straightforward, tell-no-lies type of man. Which didn’t work for me since I’d been lying through my teeth for years denying my true feelings.

More than that, I was not prepared to face River months after my sister had been murdered. I wasn’t ready to deal with the knowledge that she was gone and in the weeks leading up to her death I’d turned my back on her. The guilt was eating at me.

River wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer.

Chaos and confusion had taken over my life. And to make matters worse, I found myself in the middle of a horrific child trafficking case. Okay, to be fair, I didn’t find myself there, I’d purposefully inserted myself into the TAKEBACK investigation. And since I’d volunteered to go undercover, River did more than insert himself—he took over and declared himself my protector.

Did I mention I was madly, deeply in love with him? Did I mention he was the man of my dreams? Did I mention River thought going undercover was dangerous, crazy, and not a good idea? Turns out River was right and just when all of my wildest dreams had come true they were torn away and I was left in shambles.

Letty and River’s relationship was unconventional and I wasn’t sure if I could buy it, but I have to admit, it worked. I’m really likening the guys in this series and I’m hyped for Reese’s book next.

I really liked this. Truly, I did. I liked the way that Riley Edwards writes... I loved 'Dangerous Love', everything about it. This one? It slightly missed the mark for me. I felt that there wasn't enough of the plot... and that it felt like it had just started when it ended. I did like River... very much. I liked Letty...

Am happy that their incredibly long pen-pal relationship finally came to be in person and was so right too.

Looking forward to 'Dangerous Games'... and the rest of the Kent brothers tales too.

“I fucking hate what she did to them, to you, to Remington, to our family. Now I can’t have anything good in my life because she was a selfish, jealous, immature bitch and stole everything from me.”

- I can’t read further if I read another word from that bitch that is called heroine. I was ready to quit the book when she called herself a drama queen and liked make everything out of proportion so she would be in the spotlight, but I had to give her a chance. This was the last straw though, her making an outburst at her best friend just because she called her out in front of all of them and then calling her dead sister a “bitch”. I understand she was a bad person and did shitty things but she was still your sister and she’s dead and you have the audacity to still call her a bitch and say she stole everything from you? That is in the past you idiot and she’s dead, there is nothing you can do anymore, focus on the good parts and let her sleep in peace. With her chalking all this stuff up and talking negative things about her sister won’t do you anything good, h is so full of anger and grief, she should’ve told her sister all of this when she was alive, but she’s having this outburst now that she’s dead? She reminds me of a fucking child who has temper tantrums when she’s not in the fucking spotlight. she definitely doesn’t deserve River, he told her he loves her and would fight for her, but she as a major queen bitch just treats him like shit when he tries to comfort her or talk about her problems. We’ll she can go fuck herself and I’m done with her theatrics, I want to bitch slap her

I have been looking forward to this book since we first met River Kent in Riley Edwards Triple Canopy Series. Then we got book one of Takeback and we met the other half of his pen pal friendship in Letty. These two have loved each other for years, but there has always been something that has held them back from meeting. But when Letty starts pulling way from everything, River has had enough and he makes no hesitation when his brothers give him the information that he was hesitant to find himself.

What follows is a little different from your usual Edwards romance in the sense that these two knew one another on a cellular level aside from seeing each other face to face. There wasn't any of the push and pull that you sometimes get in these books because they both loved each other full stop without question. Now that isn't to say that they didn't have issues.

Letty has been having a hard time dealing with the aftermath of her sister's actions and has pulled away from everyone because of her mixed feelings surrounding Kiki. Which you get, then you get the fact that there is the story of children being sold as a side story that she can't help but get involved. River is loving and suportive while giving Letty some hard truths that she needs to hear and she acknowledge that. I adored these two, and the fact that River is pulled into the fold because everyone already "knew" him even though he was never physically with them.

One thing that I LOVE about this book is the fact that both of these characters were it for each other. Yes they had past relationships, but once their feelings changed (at different moments) they were all in even in the distance. There is the natural teaser into the next Takeback book with Reese and Sadie and I can't wait to see what Riley Edwards has in store for these two!

Oh my goodness I think I have found my new favourite Riley Edwards alpha baddass hero. River is a sheer delight who once his mind is made up, is so “in” that Letty doesn’t stand a chance.

I love the Kent family and like 99.9% of Riley’s readers I’m counting down the days till Echo gets his story (and the little of Echo I saw in this book totally didn’t change my mind at all) but am more than happy to meander through the stories of the rest of the extended family (TC!) on the journey and meet the strong, independent women who will knock them on their behinds along the way.

Letty is no slacker in this regard with a flair for drama (that River handles wonderfully) a strong sense of self and so much love for all her family, extended and otherwise. River quite rightly recognises she is one of a kind and locks her down early in the story, with little in the way of angst to come once the initial meet cute passes.

I liked how the story linked the family in at the beginning and end, and the brothers pretty much bullied River into making his move, though he stayed true and didn’t even look at a photo of her.

This storyline totally captured my imagination when it was mistakenly/originally mooted as the trope for Dangerous Love and it totally delivered. The anticipation, the build up, the “knowing” of each other despite having never met was so well portrayed in this story. I adored how they didn’t have to do the learning of each other’s quirks and instead the story focused on them adjusting to each other as a couple, the back story with Kiki and how Letty recovered and dealt with her feelings on this and also the child endangerment storyline (mild trigger warming here I think!)
Altogether this was pulled out of the bag and Riley delivered again a superb unputdownable book that I was thrilled to start and gutted to finish.

Also…Is Mrs S anyone else’s kind of favourite side character EVER!!!

We all have met River, Sunny’s brother and Letty from the first Takeback book in this series, we were also left with a peak into these two finally meting after 14 years….FINALLY we get the full story, how they first started texting, how their friendship grew over the years and how both fell in love with each other with never seeing a picture or looking the other up. River finally makes his move when Letty starts drifting away from everyone, including him, he’s done waiting. He’s going to go get his woman and no one is going to stand in his way. Letty is still reeling from the death of her sister and how she feels about her, pulling away from everyone, including her family. But now that River is here, she’s too scared to be happy and it will take all of River’s help to pull her out of her shell….and when Letty gets mixed up in a dangerous game, she will need River and her Takeback men to shield her from the ugly.
An AMAZING read with steam, some suspense, humour, tissues needed moments, and great characters. I LOVED these two, River’s commitment, no shying away from his feelings and intentions and his protective alpha ways. Letty was sassy, smart, and emotionally broken until River gets through to her. The story flowed beautifully and I couldn’t stop once I started. Heartbreaking and heartfelt moments that needed tissues, banter that made you smile and laugh, and protective growly alpha men all around and in a bit of suspense…YES PLEASE!!!

I loved how Letty and River met in this one, loved more that they kept up this long distance friendship for years and how important it became for them both. Even better was when River knew Letty was floundering and he finally went to her in person. Sure it was after his brothers gave him a hard time, but he went there and right away noticed his friend wasn't right and started to fix that. I thought there might be more trouble between River and the guys, but once they realized he was 100% in with Letty and only wanted the best for her they backed away.

Letty's neighbor, old lady Mrs. S, was a hoot. How she stumbled upon what she did was crazy, even more she knew she needed help and asked. River being there to help was good, he knew what was going on and pulled in the guys from Takeback. Things got a bit harry there while they were "working the op", but in the end things were good.

I really liked the last scene, loved seeing Letty and River happy living their lives.

I’m in LOVE with the Takeback Series!
In RIley Edwards’s “Dangerous Rescue,” Book 2 of the Takeback series of romantic suspense, loyal Riley fans will recognize tall, handsome drink of water River Kent from the Triple Canopy series. So exciting to see him meet his long-time penpal Letty and to practically feel the chemistry leaping from the Kindle screen! The sassy bookstore owner and the sweet, protective Southern cop have carried a torch for each other for more than a decade, and once they’re face-to-face? Wowzers! Total steam-fest! But aside from the sexy bits, there is so much sweetness and all the amazing feels. Add to that, we get danger and suspense, along with a heaping helping of all the Takeback crew’s hotness! Cannot wait for the rest of the team to get their HEAs, and I’m really hoping we get the remaining Kents as well. Such a huge fan!

Omg pure magic on these pages

River and Letty!!!
14yrs
14yrs of no last names
14yrs of text messages, then phone calls but never meeting…
Until shit hits the fan and Lettys sister is killed.
River needs to man up and go get his woman who has decided to ghost him when she needs him the most.
Letty and River’s story is a drama filled, action-packed roller coaster ride with all the feels included.
It was pure joy to read.
I tell you though I’m hanging for big brother Echo to fall now that will be an epic romance.

Riley Edwards has written a unique love story that has so much charm in addition to deep emotions, strong family dynamics, abhorrent bad actors and two leading characters who'll knock your sox off with the chemistry that surrounds them. The unique part? A romance 14 years in the making, that started with one text. They don't know one another's names nor what the other looks like. Texting once a year slowly evolves into daily texts and phone calls. Strangers turn into friends into confidants into the very best of friends and they fall in love with each without either one knowing. A life alltering event finally gives Kyle Jones the impetuous to finally pursue Letty Welsh in person and declare his intentions. Such a great romance! You'll love it. I promise!

NO MORE WAITING

10 years of being friends knowing everything about each other, and yet they’ve never met in person. Texts and phone calls are no longer enough. Seeing each other for the first time definitely does not go as planned or dreamed of. Fortunately, sparks fly and things heat up. Add in some action and drama, tension and surprises, all of which catapult the story forward in a number of different ways.
Dangerous Rescue at times is a slow easy read but it is also at times one wild ride. Don’t miss it! So very highly recommend.

Letty and River

An unconventional beginning for these two, a friendship that lasts years, about time they met face to face. And this is where it gets real. They each know they are in love with the other, but there's a lot of backstory from the first book I'd recommend reading, to know why Letty is not in a good place right now. Then current events gets all their attention and not in a good way.
A great read with high octane emotions, drama, action, and finally that wonderful HEA for these two.

Brilliant

I absolutely loved Letty & River together. All that sass vs alpha badass=brilliance. Which is exactly what with book was. Riley Edwards just keeps putting out amazing stories with characters I’d love to know.

Color me surprised when I put the pieces together that Lettie's mysterious Mr Pen Pal was River, Shiloh's brother. I was hoping that River, Phoenix, and Echo would get books. I sure hope that is the case because I love them.

I appreciated that the author discussed the guilt, anger, and grief that Lettie had towards her sister. It made the book more authentic. I, also appreciated that the author gave River a time to shine. He was worth having my interest piqued. However, again, I struggled with the background case. I felt like there should have been more explanation of the code words. I also hated that a huge chunk of the explanation of what happened to Lettie after the accident was left out. It, again felt rushed and I was left disappointed. That is a shame because up to that point, the story had been great. I'm a huge fan and live this characters but it is missing some of the charm that Gemini Group and Triple Canopy had.

River & Letty

Ahhh!! Such a great story!! We learned about Letty's Pen Pal in book 1, and River showed up at the end, which intrigued me so much I immediately hopped into their story.

I love the way they met & how they kept in touch for so long without ever actually meeting in person! Meeting River's family & the dynamic there was fun. Getting to know Letty & her feelings after all the drama with her sister. I love how River helps her heal!!

Great suspense again, humor, and heat. Excellent and enjoyable story... and I'm going right into book 3 bc the lead in with Reese & Sadie has me intrigued again!

The story was fine, but I really didn’t like Letty. I hate the over use of “baby” more. To me baby implies someone who can’t take care of themselves and Letty was anything but that.

I don’t believe I’m going to continue this series and the author isn’t resonating with me currently.

I will always love these books-well-every book by Riley😂.
But if you read my dumb ass, uneducated, poorly written reviews here you know I will always be honest to how the book makes ME feel. How I enjoy it. Etc.

I do NOT write reviews to be bffs w an author. Period.
And if I don’t enjoy a character or story, I say so. Period. I appreciate honesty. I like reading honest reviews.

So. Ok.

I HATE the fmc Letty for like half this book. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️😂😂

BUT I LOVED THIS ENTIRE STORY. ♥️♥️♥️♥️

Letty is a hard main character for me to like or get into. As a side character she was great. Annoying ish but loving. Loyal but stubborn. Selfish in a way due to her impulsive nature but also giving. I liked her in book one.

She suffered unimaginable pain caused by her horrible terror of a sister, Kiki in Brook and Rhode’s story (bk 1) and so we meet her at that ending point post drama, in this book.

She is swimming in her trauma and all up in her head. Yes we all experience trauma and grief and its after effects differently.
She goes off the rails. 😭
Thinking things that aren’t true. Like making things upnin her head and assuming shit about people that was way off. Pulling away. Blaming herself. Not letting others in. Being selfish. Not talking to her parents as they suffered their own loss. As close as she was to Brook and her parents, pulling away and her reasons why were utterly bizarre amd selfish. But, that’s Letty the first half of this book. Bizarre. Dramatic. Obnoxious. Impulsive. And sometimes selfish and immature.

But. I get it. I really do. We all process shit differently. And in order for Letty to finally make way thru her issues, she needed tough love. River and her friends and family brought it FINALLY in spades.

Here is my opinion-I just cannot stand impulsive dramatic people and when authors put them in their books as main characters and have them do dumb shit too, it just grates my nerves. Side characters. Fine. Not main ones.

📍It’s a me problem tho in this instance and NOT an author problem. 📍

Riley wrote the living HELL out of Letty. Period.

The arc was amazing. So she grows and changes and learns to love better-& I learned to like her AGAIN at the end.

And If anyone can redeem badly behaving broken people, it’s Riley. And J Bree. And Susan Stoker. Ok. I’m done.

I need to be clear here. The story was phenomenal. I LOVE River and am so glad he got his hea w Letty too. 🥹River is my book boyfriend and I will expire on this hill. 😍😝

Their love story is so unique and special. One of the MOST creative contemporary love stories I have read. 🖤

I am just not a fan of using women doing dumb shit as a way to move the story along. But in order to get Letty and River installed into this bad situation, Letty had to do dumb shit.

Ok. This is all over the place without going anywhere. PLEASE read the book, ignore my rants on how much I hate Letty thru most of it and enjoy all that this world brings to your reading enjoyment.

River Kent & Letty Welsh.

Second book in a series. Start with Dangerous Love. Spoilers for Dangerous Love.

Letty “met” River 14 years ago. She was sitting outside a restaurant watching her “college boyfriend” cheat on her with another woman. River just happened to find said boyfriend’s unlocked phone in the men’s room, her furious texts catching his attention. River replied only to get a description of said boyfriend so he could have a word with him.

A few days later River texted from an unknown number, getting Letty’s assurance that the now ex boyfriend kept his distance. Contact dropped off after that, only for Letty to text him out of the blue when she literally ran into her ex and he looked appropriately kow towed.

After that River made it a habit on texting Letty on her birthday. Until one birthday Letty answered the text with a phone call. Letty spilled how much she was hating her job, and listening to River’s advice, she quit her desk job at a publishing company to open her own bookstore.

After that they talked and texted regularly, finding an intimacy you can only experience with a blind relationship. Brooklyn, Lettie’s best friend and soul sister, said River was her male bestie. He was the first to hear when Letty found out Brooklyn was pregnant, and he got to share in the delight of Remy’s birth. Their relationship continued to be deep and abiding until everything went down with Kiki.

In her pain over Kiki, Letty pulled back from everyone in her life, including River. When River’s cover was blown in his work with the police gang unit, he found himself riding a desk. So he up and quit, risking it all for a chance with Letty.

While Letty didn’t want to let River in, because how dare she be happy while her parents were mourning their daughter, all her loved ones took this as a sign to stop pussy footing around her pain. Because they knew River would pick up the pieces.

A little more relationship angst with this one, mostly on Letty’s part. Though River got insanely jealous of Letty’s banter with Reese until she clarified they weren’t involved.

Dangerous Rescue is book 2 in the Takeback series by Riley Edwards. Set in small-town Coeur d’Alene, Idaho this cozy romantic suspense will keep you on your toes. I immediately loved Letty in Dangerous Love and I’ve been waiting for her backstory with River since Fractured. It’s not your typical mistaken identity romance. A lost phone led to an indelible friendship being forged. Talk about working the slow play, River gees! Haha. The fourteen year time lapse from Letty & River’s first text to their first in-person encounter was beautifully written. The longing, the unrequited feelings while they grew into who they were meant to be. I loved the build up of their friendship and tension. Once they finally met, the attraction was explosive. The drips of Triple Canopy events from River’s POV were fantastic. I am obsessed with the found family vibe of the Takeback team. The way they settled into Coeur d’Alene and ingratiated themselves with the community was endearing. They’re all a bunch of big ol’ alpha teddy bears! Mrs. Simpson made me snort-laugh. Poor, poor River. The subplot does feature heavy content, Riley did not disappoint with this epic best friends to “mine” love story. If you need a low-angst, refreshing, edge-of-your-seat, friends-to-lovers, the Dangerous Rescue audio is a must-listen!

I adore Michelle Sparks, she is a wonderful addition to the Rebel Family! Her portrayal of Letty’s character arc was incredible. She brought Letty to life with a delightful sweetness and passionate energy that captured all of Letty’s layers. Scott Rider was perfectly cast as the charming, protective, thoughtful, River. Their performances were well matched in tone and pacing. Their narration styles brought Riley’s characters and Letty & River’s love story off the page flawlessly. It’s possible I melted when Michelle said my name in this book…sure, Letty was talking about the O.G. Liz Taylor, but I’ll take it! I was hooked on this audiobook from chapter one and loved every minute!

I have read all of the Takeback series previously as well as all the Triple Canopy books but somehow never had the time to read River Kent's story that tied the two series together. I loved both Letty's character in the first Takeback book as well as River in the TC series but sadly for me, Dangerous Rescue was a let down. River and Letty met in a very cute way when she was in college 14 years ago and sent a text to her cheating boyfriend at the time. Back then cellphones were flip phones and this one was left in a men's room. River picked it up and so begins his introduction to Letty via text. He was just getting ready to enter the police academy in Georgia where he lived and she moved back home to Idaho after graduation. A year after River intercepted Letty's text, he sends her another one to wish her a Happy Birthday. See...cute! So for years this type of thing goes on. For young people in their early 20's this seems totally fun. The problem for me as a reader is that this went on for years and eventually Letty calls River and then they begin a long distance phone friendship which goes on for 6 years! They agree to not look into each other on social media and as time goes on, they become long distance best friends. Now Letty is 35 and River is 36 and I cannot wrap my mind around this long distance relationship! If they were so interested in each other, one would think that since they hit 30, they would have taken the chance and met up somewhere. They feel that they have fallen in love but have never met? Letty's sister has passed away and she has been pulling back from River so he's sad and his brothers finally decide to look up Letty's information and push River to go after her. These two are practically middle aged! Basically Dangerous Rescue was a contemporary romance with a slight suspense story thrown in the background. It's a slow burn with angst, humor and heat. It was told from dual POV and normally I would rate this at 3* but I do love all of the other books in the series so I bumped it up. I recommend reading it but I won't be reading it again.

Dangerous Rescue is the second audiobook in Riley Edwards’ incredible Takeback series, and it is the crossover story we didn’t know we were getting but could not possibly have done without. If you have read or listened to Riley’s Triple Canopy series, then you know who River Kent is. We’ve always known he had a serious girlfriend, but we didn’t know any of the details about that relationship. Well, now we do! This audiobook centers around the romance between River and Letty, who played a big part in Dangerous Love, the first book in this series. Their love story is nothing short of epic, spanning fourteen years before they ever even met or knew who the other was aside from first names. When Letty starts to pull away, River takes it upon himself to track Letty down and shoot his shot with her. But before they can get to their HEA, Letty accidentally puts herself smack in the middle of one of Takeback’s extremely dangerous child-trafficking investigations, and River will do whatever it takes to keep Letty safe.

This story is truly one of my favorites out of all of Riley Edwards’ books. And that’s saying something given the sheer volume and high caliber of this author’s work. The audiobook for this fantastic story is narrated by Michelle Sparks and Scott Rider, both of whom were new or nearly new voices for me. I’ve listened to a couple of Michelle Sparks’ titles and could not be more impressed with her work. Her performance here is emotional and layered and absolutely perfect for the character of Letty. Scott Rider was a brand new voice for me, but based on his compelling performance here, I’m sure I’ll be listening to much more from him. He brought a level of sensitivity and passion to the character of River Kent that is unmatched, in my opinion. Together, these two narrators brought this phenomenal story to life in such a way that it completely captivates the listener, making this a title you won’t want to miss.

Oh man, this book was WAYY better than I thought it would be! River and Letty are amazing and so perfect for each other! What turns out as an 'accidental' meeting via text message turns into an amazing friendship for River and Letty, spanning over many years, which I love. I love how they keep in touch and their friendship grows more and more and they continue to feel so comfortable with each other and end up falling for each other before they even meet one another!
Letty is a bad ass. She doesn't take shit from anyone. She's sassy, fired up, and I love that she doesn't let the big, hulky men in her life push her around. She also has a soft side and I truly felt for her as she worked through her grief after losing her sister Kiki unexpectedly. She's angry, hurt, and is so upset that throughout their life, Kiki was so mean to her and her parents, never wanting to grow up, but now that she's gone, Letty has to work through her emotions and dig deep to find the real 'cause' for all her anger towards her departed sister. She leans on River, after expecting him as the last man on earth to show up at her book store and profess his love for her (swoon!).
I absolutely love River. He's a strong alpha male, who knows what he wants, he's a protector, and he is so kind and patient with Letty. There are times in the book where she is truly a lot to handle and lashes out at him with her pent up emotions but he is her rock and he never once freaks out on her for being a bitch to him. He's an all around good guy, and slowly chips away at the stone wall around Letty's heart, and I love that about him. I also love the fact that he fell in love with Letty before even laying eyes on her. He feel for her personality, her quirks, and her personality. LOVE that.
This is a great read with a lot of action, suspense and swoon worthy love, lust and anticipation. Highly recommend!

Letty and River - a swoony steamy romance

I just loved the heartwarming, action packed, emotional journey that is Letty and River’s HEA. You will feel all the things. This book grabbed me from the first page and did not let me go until the last. This is a beautiful friends to lovers romance where we are reminded that all choices have consequences and pasts cannot be changed, they can only be accepted. This book does a phenomenal job of giving us three dimensional characters and a well rounded storyline. Fifteen years ago on her birthday, Letty saw her boyfriend with another woman. She proceeded to send him angry texts breaking up with him. River is a cop who happened to be passing through town and in the bathroom of the restaurant where the bf left his phone. He reads the texts and connects with Letty. Thus starts the unlikely friendship of Letty and River, first with just birthday texts and eventually to phone calls and daily contact between best friends but they’ve never exchange last names, photos, or met in person. That all changes after Letty’s sister is killed (Takeback book 1) and she starts ghosting River. River decides to go to Letty and jump start their HEA. This book has everything you’d expect from romantic suspense - alpha heroes, laughter, tears, sexy times, strong friendships, family bonds, fear, dangerous situations, and so much love. With Dangerous Rescue, Riley Edwards once again proves she’s a fantastic storyteller and easily a one click author for me. I also appreciated the slight crossover with the Triple Canopy series where we originally met River. I am excited to hear what happens next for the boys in Takeback and perhaps the rest of River’s brothers too.

I thought the beginning of Dangerous Rescue was so delightfully humorous. Only Riley Edwards could imagine a girl (Letty) breaking up with her boyfriend (Troy) by sending texts to his phone as she watched him with another girl. Then to have a gentleman (River) pick up the boyfriend's phone and engage in a conversation with the girl. To top it off, they don't meet at that point. For the next fourteen years, Letty was to get a text from River to wish her a Happy Birthday and to see if Troy had ever bothered her again. Finally, they began to be friends and talk to each other about their lives, although they still refrained from exchanging last names. It would be fourteen years later that they would actually meet in person under completely different circumstances.
River was an undercover police officer whose cover had been broken. Now, his only choice for working for the police was to do desk work. When he learned Letty's sister Kiki was missing, he immediately quit his job and headed to be with Letty to see what he could do to help.
Kiki blamed Brooklyn for everything that happened to her that was wrong. Her parents had taken Brooklyn in when her parents were killed in a car accident. Brooklyn and Letty were good friends but Kiki, who was younger was often left out. She grew up to be angry and irresponsible. Finally, she ran away; but convinced a friend of hers to pretend that Kiki had been kidnapped by a local gang. Kiki was determined to make Brooklyn, Letty, and her parents for all the wrongs she imagined were done to her. River is determined to help find Kiki but more importantly to help protect Letty. Can he work with the Idaho officers and help Letty?

"I never found River, which only cemented my suspicion the stranger had given me a fake name."
There must be thousands of people named River. I doubt she didn't find one and she had no clue his last name or what he looked like. Not to mention that millions of people don't do social media lol

Not only does the author spend too much time with inner monologs, but way too often do the characters give long winded speeches. This is why I always need breaks from Rileys books. It's too much. Everyone is so long winded. And the FMCs are always so whiny in their heads and straight up bitches to the men.

“She’s dead and now I can’t have you.”
Why? That's probably the dumbest excuse a character has ever made lol

“It’s fake. All of it. Happiness doesn’t last—”
So why did she push for Brooklyn and Rhode to be together so bad? Why do authors do this? Have a character campaign for their BFF to get her HEA and blah blah but then when it's that character's turn they turn into whining, sniveling, wishy washy babies

“You’ll make it safe for me.”
(You’ll make it safe for me.) Inner monolog
The author does this at minimum three times per chapter. One of the MCs will say something to the other and then that MC will inner monolog the exact same thing. It would be one thing if ONE character did this, but every single character in every book does it. When will authors realize we don't need a lot of unnecessary words or a longer book. Being repetitive or long winded is more exhausting than fun

"Now Letty was sitting in the corner of her bookstore reading the messages Cole had sent to Dora using her screen name."
Except it was Davis who sent the messages, not Cole

Oooh what a way to kick off a wonderful story.
It was nice to roll into a romance, albeit unusual. I smiled all through the years.
I was so excited to finally get to know River.
There is only one other book I've listened to where texting couples lead to a HEA and it was wonderful. I so enjoyed the way Riley introduces the backstory as well as the long distant intimacy between H and h.
A very clever way to weave past and present together.
The early vulnerability of both the h and H was refreshing and the tone of the plot had a wonderful old fashioned feel.
Then it all turned real and modern and out came alpha River. Just marvellous.
All the emotions of humour, frustration, guilt, action, love, loyalty, family trust, hotness, fear, jealousy, romance, just kept coming, it was toe curling. However it was one of the first books where I wanted to shake the h and not so much the H.
And then the ugly appears from left field, and it was sit up with intrigue and horror stuff. There was so much angst and suspense, especially when old ghosts came calling.
When it all came to the end It was a hold my breath bravo for the h and H and the team.
My opinion of Letti just soared up my star chart
Although it doesn't detract from the book, I was happy to have an insight on the Kents, Brooklyn, and the Takeback crew. If anything you'll want to listen/read the others.
Fabulous story, and I might add a clever plug in a few places. Way to go Riley!
Awesome novel, fantastic story. Loved it.
Michelle and Scott did a great job. I enjoyed their tone and inflections.
So looking forward to the next book.

River and Letti

I loved the premise of this book. Since I’ve read the Triple Canopy series, I knew River’s backstory and that helped me understand his character. River and Letti spent 14 years conversing over the phone. They started out as once a year texts and turned into best fiends who called each other whenever they had news to share. They both ended up falling in love but we’re too afraid to lose what they had but when Letti suffers a insurmountable tragedy and pulls away, River knows it’s time to step up. He loves from Georgia to Idaho to give them a chance.

River is the shoulder Letti needs to get her back on her feet. After losing her sister she’s drowning in anger and guilt and doesn’t know how to pull herself up. River barges into her life and shakes everything up.

When Letti’s neighbor stumbles upon a child trafficking website and brings it to Letti and River’s attention, River joins the Takeback team to help take down the website. But Letti unintentionally puts herself in harms way and River has to stand by her side as she demands to help with the case and put herself in danger.

My only complaint about this book is I wanted more. It was a quick read and had a fair amount of suspense, romance, and steam but I felt like the ending left a lot up in the air. Overall a good read and I, of course, love the Kent family. I’m glad River got his HEA and Letti was perfect for him.

River & Letty's love story has been 14 years in the making and is so worth the wait! River is part of the delicious Kent family we first met in Riley's Triple Canopy series and have been desperate to read more about since. He is a wonderful growly alpha and so much more, strong, protective and committed, he and Letty might never have met but when he feels her starting to pull away from him and close herself off he decides, with a little push from his family, to act and finally meet her in person. We saw glimpses of Letty's character in the first Takeback story, you will either adore her or she will exasperate you but she is definitely one of a kind, drama is her middle name along with sass and jump right in but she is reeling from the events surrounding her sister's death and emotionally drowning.
I love the accidental text and 'pen pal' premise of the story as it resonates with how my husband and I met and fell in love, so I was always going to love this story. Now he's claimed her there is no way River is letting Letty get away no matter her fears and the roadblocks she throws up. River is strong enough to put her back together and get them both to the place where they need to be. Of course, their story is accompanied by some suspense, lots of drama, emotion, heartbreak and understanding plus plenty of heat and humour. As ever Riley Edwards thank you for a great, truly enjoyable read and I can't wait for the next in the series as well as Echo & Phoenix's future stories.
