You know her. Maybe you are her. The Most Put-Together Woman in the Room. Make no mistake, she never feels the most put-together. And she doesn't do it to make anyone else feel small. She walks in without a hair out of place, always delivering an A+ performance and relentlessly hard on herself, because she feels like that is the minimum standard she has to achieve just to be welcome in most rooms. Just to be invited to most tables. You would never know by looking at her the hard things she's had to overcome in her life. She succeeds, almost compulsively, in this urgent attempt to outrun her own muddy story. But she is walking around now, reduced to this burned-out, brittle, fragile, ashes-to-ashes version of herself. She is, at last, exhausted. When gold stars, highlight reels, and seeking approval from strangers are not enough, Mary Marantz assures you that you're already worthy and gives you permission to stop running. In this powerful, life-giving devotional, she shows you how to move from achieving, striving, and performing for your worth to the grace, freedom, and purpose that come from knowing that your identity and calling are determined by God. You are not in a race with anyone. Good things take time. And slow growth equals strong roots.
Author, speaker, and podcast host, Mary Marantz, grew up in a single-wide trailer in rural West Virginia. The first of her immediate family to go to college, she went on to earn a law degree from the nation's #1 law school, Yale. After ditching six-figure-salary law firm offers in London and New York, she started a business with her husband, Justin. Together they have built a successful online education platform for creative entrepreneurs. She is also the host of the highly- ranked and popular podcast The Mary Marantz Show which debuted in the Top 200 of iTunes. Mary will release her first book, "Dirt: Growing Strong Roots in What Makes the Broken Beautiful," in September. She lives in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut, with her husband, Justin and their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed and Atticus. This book will meet you in the real stuff of life and plant seeds that have potential to actually become strong roots. This isn't fluff about how worthy you are (which you are); it is a vulnerable, best-kind-of-gut-punch, lyerical journey of what it really means to actually stop achieving for your worth. Mary has truly written GOLD in these pages.
Mary’s words were honest and thought-provoking from the first page. She speaks directly to my soul on every page. The book is like a love letter to myself to know I’m not alone in a world that only seems to celebrate women who can do and be it all.
It was such a pleasure to read this book! Mary’s words gave me the courage and clarity to pursue my dream life, while paying respect to the often slow and unglamorous process it takes to get there. Previously, I was plagued with a sense of urgency. I felt the need to almost hastily chase after my dreams. I was constantly aware of the clock ticking and my time running out. Now, after reading Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots, I feel a sense of calm that I haven’t felt in a while. I almost want to take my time in pursuing my dreams, I'm tempted to even draw out the process, knowing that the best things take time. I am confident that anyone woman in any stage or season of life can derive comfort, encouragement, and inspiration from these pages. I’m grateful for the invitation to be still, be present, and allow things to take their time to grow in my life.
Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots by Mary Marantz hit me like an unexpected gust of wind that stings your eyes and takes your breath as the magnitude of what’s written on its pages hit you. Mary has a way of making you feel seen and known that only comes from having danced in the same shoes as you, just a different size. In this book you will find yourself. You will discover how truly exhausted you are from performing in a role you’re so used to playing you often don’t realize you’re doing it. The role of performing to gain approval, to gain friends, to gain worth in your life. With Godly wisdom Mary tells you how you can find freedom and rest from performing for your worth, but more importantly, why you don’t need to.
You were made on purpose for a purpose and this book communicates that message so beautifully that it felt like I was wrapped in a cozy blanket sitting across from a longtime friend with a warm cup of coffee chatting about our insecurities, faith, struggles, triumphs, heartaches, and that deep-seated lifelong desire that God placed within each of our hearts to use our unique gifts and share our story with those we encounter to bring people closer to him. The design of the book, the photography, and the typography are visually stunning and give the entire reading experience a feeling of being immersed in fine art. Beautiful, powerful, and full of paragraphs I read a few times and meditated over so I could feel them wash over me, this book is an exquisite blessing.
Not only is Mary a painter with words, but she is the woman who sees you in a way that you may not even see yourself. She is able to articulate so beautifully her own struggles in a way that relates to so many women who struggle with the exact same thing and they, in turn, feel so much less alone. This book is for the woman who has felt like she's not measuring up to what she "thought she could be" or that she feels like she's constantly performing to get where she wants, but inside she's crumbling. You will walk away from this book feeling encouraged, challenged, and ready to more forward in freedom.
This is the book your soul needs, especially if you are exhausted and feeling the weight of comparison, the strain of hustle culture, or the pressure to perform. This book is a visual beauty, but also a literary work of art. Mary's words encourage, soothe and heal the heart that has been longing for rest and a slower pace of life that makes room for sipping coffee on the front porch, walks along the beach, and long talks with the people that matter the most to us. The is the kind of book that you buy multiple copies of to share with your friends.
I fell in love with Mary's story and writing with Dirt in 2021, and I think she just keeps getting better! This is a beautiful, vulnerable, and honest look at what it means to be true to yourself - to who God created you to be - without the trappings of comparison or people-pleasing. I will now and forever be on the lookout for those "Decepticons of success," and I'm quite sure I will be reading this one again each year for the truth and encouragement we all need on repeat!
As I read Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots by Mary Marantz, I dared to utter the words, I am at last exhausted and tired of always being “on”. I’m tired of running. It’s as if she could see inside my life and know what I’ve been thinking and feeling for oh so long. Her beautiful, inspiring, powerful, must-read words came into my life in God’s perfect timing. I absolutely loved it!
Slow Growth spoke to the weary places in my soul and made me realize I have unknowingly been giving fear the final say. With my hand raised high, I admit I’ve spent too many years striving to be “all the things” to everyone, to be more, to do more for my worth and always came up short. I’ve battled to be enough, to feel anything but less than, all the while God was saying, “You are already enough my child because I created you that way.” He lovingly assigned it before I was born.
Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots is about finding grace, purpose and freedom in a noisy world of overachieving and performance-driven expectations to desperately prove our worth to ourselves and the world. This life-giving book gives you loving permission to finally stop running and to view the hope and possibilities in your life, through God’s eyes, the source and creator of our identity and worth. Mary Marantz bares her soul in the most authentic, vulnerable, honest, and beautiful ways. The good, the bad, and the ugly kind of ways that need to be said. Her words give you pause in all the best ways. I’m inspired to pull out the book I was writing, the one left long forgotten, and rise to write again. I’m all in God! Mary Marantz’s words, which I believe to be true of this book, “The place where our gifts meet our story has the power to change lives.”, will now be my battle cry!
I think everyone needs to read her amazing story so they too can slow down and embrace their God-given worth in place of achieving and fighting for it. Thank you for writing this timely, awe-inspiring, hands down most highlighted book ever, that I will be rereading again and again. Mary Marantz, you are, and always will be enough. I’m in the process of seeing and believing that within myself. I look forward to noticing the fireflies again.
There are a lot of books out there about feeling not enough, about feeling burnt out, stressed out, and always needing to perform. Yet the truth in Marantz's word, the compassion and strength of her voice that can only be shaped through experience, and the kind grace in her message all make Slow Growth equals Strong Roots worthy of a second look.
Although this isn't Marantz's first book it was my first introduction to her work. I found her writing to be personable, earnest, and down to earth. At one point Marantz writes about how oversaturated the market feels on every topic and yet there is still room for a voice to share their message and their dreams with truth. While there wasn't a lot of new material in this book, Marantz has a way of owning her experiences, her highs and lows, with a humility and companiable way that her message stands out for the crowd.
The book itself is quite giftable I mean I'm a sucker for a shiny cover and a sewn in bookmark. But I also appreciated the artistry in the book's compilation. The use of Marantz's photography further weaving in her story. The contrast and comparison they added to support the words helped make this book very visually appealing.
The message was laid out quite well and I was surprised to see that Marantz has accompanying material online like a quiz to see which characters represented in the book "The Woman Who Is Always Performing, The High Wire Tightrope Walker, The Contortionist, The Masquerader, and The Illusionist" may fit your experience best. I personally found the different personas a helpful take as well as Marantz's explanation that she had struggled with each one at different stages or in different experiences.
I will definitely be recommending this to some of the people in my circle as a summer read.

There were many nuggets of wisdom in this book that I appreciated and was convicted by. I especially enjoyed the sections when the author used an illustration or passage from Scripture like the feeding of the five thousand, the prodigal son, or the parable of the talents. I found those sections to be the most enjoyable and convicting. There were some illustrations used and references to movies and popular culture that I felt were not in good taste. I understand the point the author was trying to make which in some cases may have been a good one, but I felt like there could have been a better illustration or way of making the point. There were also some words that I prefer not to use or listen to, not profanity but more crude/ euphamistic language. I also did not appreciate the references to alcohol- champagne for celebrations, etc. Generally speaking, I really enjoy when the author does the reading for their audible book. But there was something about the voice of the author that I found to be minorly irritating. I did very much appreciate her sharing of her personal story and struggles. And her reading did give the book more flow and depth that I have experienced when authors read their own works as opposed to another narrator.
I picked up Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots because the title really resonated with me—I’m in a season of laying down deep roots, and I was drawn to the idea of embracing slow, intentional growth.
The book is beautifully written, and Mary Marantz shares meaningful truths about identity, striving, and grace. The messages are clearly laid out and heartfelt. However, I found that much of the content didn’t fully connect with me. It seemed to be written primarily for people who are constantly hustling—those who need to be reminded to slow down and find worth outside of their performance.
As someone who is naturally more restful and Type B, I didn’t find a ton of new insight that applied to my life. There were a few chapters that stood out and offered encouragement, but overall, it didn’t feel deeply impactful for me personally. That said, I think this book would be a great fit for high-achievers who are tired and worn thin from the pressure to do more and be more.
Even if the content wasn’t quite what I needed, I still really appreciate the message behind the title. It’s a timely reminder that deep, lasting growth often happens in the unseen places—and that’s something I can definitely carry with me.
This book speaks to all of us who've ever felt like we spend our lives constantly churning out success after success, achievement after achievement, proof that we've "made it," done better, or gotten out but all the while just continuously "running from our muddy past."
Mary speaks candidly yet passionately, lovingly and comfortingly, as a friend who has just sat down beside us with a warm cup of tea. This book deserves a quiet space for deep reflection and a comfy chair to settle into.
Be prepared to suddenly, and without warning, feel the need place your bookmark, close your eyes and feel the words that Mary has just spoken into your heart. I will certainly revisit my bookmarked pages time and time again as I continue to learn more about myself and grow slowly into my strong roots.

Slow growth equals strong roots. Like having a friend over for tea and having a heart-to-heart conversation about your need to slow down, refocus yourself with God at the centre, and find grace in your journey.
Honestly, I'd rather have the friend over for tea or a good long walk. :)
Not a bad book. Did read to me like a series of blog posts. Loved the prayers that closed out each of the 35 readings. Scripture opens each reading ergo reminding us to put God first, but the chapters often didn't focus in on the passages offered or so it seemed to me.
If you have no close friends or mentors to have tea with, this book will prove a good second. Would have loved some workbook-type of questions to help think through each of the lessons/chapters.
A very good book. I will add this book to my annual "re-read" list. This book is written for the exhausted female. It is written to remind us that we need to slow down and enjoy life's moment. Enjoy every accomplishment and every failure where we didn't tick the box. Because even though we did tick off the box once we enjoyed the journey.. the experience is what mattered the most.
I would recommend it to every woman ages 30- and up. The most put together woman in the room.
Because that is when we begin to juggle and multi-task and our dreams sometimes become bigger than God's wish for us.
The book ends each Chapter with a short but suitable prayer. It creates the right pause so we wont rush through completing the book.
I did not read Ms Marantz first book Dirt. But this book made me add it to my shopping cart.
Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots by Mary Marantz is as beautiful as it is practical. Sometimes it seems for all our efforts we never can reach the proverbial goal line we’re chasing and it’s an ever changing, ever moving line because we are ever changing. Mary dives into what it means to slow down from your strivings and grow roots so as not to miss what God has for you in the here and now, rather than always focusing on what’s next. She invites you into her own story, sharing honest accounts of her experiences and struggles with achieving. Speaking to you like a trusted friend, she incorporates scripture and prayer to offer hope for the one exhausted from achieving and reminds us of where our worth truly lies. Definitely a worthwhile read!
Strong Growth Equals Strong Root was food to my soul. I appreciate how open, raw and vulnerable Mary is as she shares her story. Mary has a way with words that makes the reader easy to relate to. She doesn't only write eloquently but her writing is very captivating. Her words are powerful and profound. I felt like Mary was speaking directly to me. Reading her book made me pause and evaluate my life. Am I being true to myself? Do I accept myself for who I am? This book is a beautiful reminder that God is my firm foundation and within that, there is freedom. Freedom to be my authentic self. Freedom to be who God created me to be. Freedom to be vulnerable and show up just as I am, because in doing so I give others the courage and permission to do the same.
I read this book in a weary state, tired from striving. I emerged refreshed by Mary’s words and the Biblical encouragement she shares in it. I felt like Mary was writing directly to me; she knew exactly how I was struggling and God gave her the words to uplift me. Her words in Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots encouraged me to tell the story God has given me for His glory. “We have to stop living our lives to prove people wrong”, wow, such a hard hit to my proud spirit. Mary showed me over and over through this beautiful book that striving for perfection and my worth was never going to end with happiness, just a continual weary state of being. If you’re tired of striving and need to find rest, you’ll find it in the Lord, and Mary’s book is a great companion on that journey.
Once again Mary has hit it out of the park! This book is inspiring in it's call to stop striving for accomplishment and instead be content to take the slower path that provides deeper growth. The chapters are short so I intended to use it as a daily devotional/ meditation but I couldn't put it down and found myself reading a few chapters at a time. I underlined so many of her insights and will be chewing them over again and again for years to come.
And I just LOVE the Slow Growth Prayers at the end of each chapter of the book. They are like modern day "Valley of Vision" prayers - I will be coming back to read them again. Thank you for writing this - it is just the message I need (maybe we all need?) to hear right now.
Ate this one up! I simply adore Mary & her outlook on essentially everything. As someone who was a high achiever all through high school and college, post-grad has been… possibly the most uncomfortable experience in the entire world (worse than puberty, not even exaggerating). Slow Growth was just the reassurance I needed to know that I can’t achieve my way into the hearts of other OR MY OWN HEART! I’m also an enneagram 1 so life in this mind of mine can get quite brutal at times🫠 (I’m working on it, ok!)
I always love Mary’s writing style as it keeps things so entertaining and imaginative but also feeding my heart and my mind. So basically, if it’s written by @marymarantz it’s gonna be great. End of story.
While reading ‘slow growth equals strong roots’ I kept asking myself if Mary wrote this book for me. This book is as captivating as her first book ‘Dirt’. Deep rooted with scripture and the promise that God has good things in store for us, this book is beautiful and uplifting and can give one nothing but hope and promise for a beautiful future. A book about accepting ourselves as we are, being present and loving ourselves as we are and appreciating the delicate balance of time… for once a seed is planted it does not grow overnight. Give yourself grace, be patient with yourself. A must read!! My heart is full!
This is such an impactful read! The words are eloquent and relatable, poignant and wise. It's for anyone who thinks they must strive to do ALL THE THINGS to feel like they have worth. Tucked between beautiful images and typography are messages of relief and release for those with tense shoulders from the burden of striving.
There are some lessons in life I’ve had to be reminded of over and over, and this is one of them. I’m so glad to add Mary’s voice as one of challenge and encouragement as I seek to live a life that is not fueled by striving, but rooted firmly in the Holy Spirit, producing the fruit He has called me to produce in my life through His power.
The title befits the book content, slowly drawing you through one thoughtful nudge at a time towards your full potential. This book takes an introspective look at areas that might hold you back and how to move beyond those limiting feelings. Mary Marantz writes beautifully, as if writing for herself or a personal letter to you alone. I felt understood and loved throughout the pages, basking in the warm embrace of words, my chin pointing upwards to see glimpses of God’s glory. Organized in a 35-day devotional approach, with stunning photographs throughout, it’s a lovely book to display on a coffee or end table and one I will read again and again!
Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots by Mary Marantz is beautiful, inside and out — the gold specks on the cover just a precursor to the nuggets of pure gold on each page. Anchored in scripture, adorned with stunning photography and typography, and abounding in wisdom gained only by wrestling through these truths oneself, this book is a must read for any woman who has ever tried to perform their way to worth. Mary’s words reach deep into your exhausted soul, making you feel profoundly seen and understood and calling you to true rest at last.
Fear, doubt, shame, and insecurity- the words of things often battled in the privacy of our minds- never shared, but rather masked over. Mary’s honest yet gentle words address these battles head on in a way that makes you feel seen and understood. Not only does it make you feel like you aren’t alone, but it uses Biblical Truth to combat the lies we let ourselves believe. I am so grateful to Mary for getting these words to print and sharing from her own story. I fully intend on gifting multiple copies to the women in my life!
This book is equal parts encouraging, inspiring and absolutely stunning. The Christian photographer turned author uses every talent she has to write this book filled with mini chapters that speak to your heart. She shares her own struggles, and speaks to the reader as if you’ve been best friends for a lifetime. She intersperses her gorgeous photography throughout to share images that visually anchor her words. This book is a treasure for those who are weary from chasing the world’s definition of success. Come as you are and leave inspired to pursue slow growth to achieve strong roots.
As someone who has researched and read books about the Enneagram personality system, just from reading the introduction, I knew the author was a 3w4. I was surprised to see that in chapter 31, she mentions that she had the author Ian Morgan Cron (who wrote a book about the Enneagram) on her podcast. Not only that, but she said she knows she's either a 3w4 or a 4w3. This is a book for type 3s, or those with a 3 wing. As a 9w1, there were parts of this book that I found helpful and insightful, but for the most part, I could not relate to much of this book.
