A thousand years ago, an empire died. No one knew why. Not until now.
Seven years ago, Caitlyn “Cat” Aguirre - the first of the magicless Zeros - was kidnapped and taken to the ruins of the Eternal City. There, she discovered the dread secret behind the collapse of the Thousand-Year Empire, a secret she knew she didn’t dare share with the world. But now, with strange sightings and energies emitting from the ruined city - and a darkening political situation back home - Cat has no choice, but to return to the dead city.
And what she finds there will change everything ...
So good to get back to Caitlyn's point of view. But has she been written into an unhappy corner. She wants to be a researcher but now she be forced into even more intense political involvement. I want to see how she continues to mature and develop so please don't go back to the less attractive alternate points of view. Though completing the marriage contract and thus a dual point of view would be acceptable.
Chris has an extraordinary talent for spinning a riveting tale over several books. I thought this was the end of the Zero series and was glad to see it isn't yet. I'm also reading his military stories and they are great. I'm impressed by the respect he has for military personnel & organizations, as a former Army officer I'm tired of authors who paint all things military as evil and/or stupid. Please keep going, sir! Anticipating your next Zero book? Advice: hire some Zeros to speed up Production Processes.
At the end of most every Christopher Nuttall book there is a request for a review and to help spread the word, both of which I am happy to do. I get his fantasy books as soon as they are available and would encourage all others to try them, you will soon be addicted, the man is a story teller second to no one. This book shows never ting a Christopher Nuttall series is running out of steam - here he has just filled the tank with gas and laid the groundwork for many novels to come and I for one cannot wait. I always saw "The zero enigma" series as second to "Schooled in Magic", after this book I may have to revise my opinion as it is fast becoming an equal. Thoroughly recommend to all y'all both of these series.
Really enjoyed this book and the rest of the books in the series.
Cat is a wonderful character, and her determination to live her life her way within a very rigid social hierarchy is a good read. The plot and storyline is fascinating and all the other characters are gtreat fun to read about. Now if Cat would just cut her hair before she and Akin get married -
As always, Christopher Nuttall sends us on one heck of a ride. I love his writing style, and gladly buy every one of his books, in every series, the minute it comes out. Cat, Alana, and Bella finally get their season. Cat helps solve a mystery while finding at least 3 more. The Eternal City is getting worse, and betrayal comes from a sad direction. Throw in a marvel of engineering, and you have a doozy of a story. I am anxiously awaiting book 11!
Excellent, I have read almost all Christopher G Nuttall's books, excellent everyone.
I find it incredible that this and her has to self publish his book, have all but the last Schooled in magic, and am hoping to read that soon. This present series is very good, he has such a fertile imagination, you need to read the first ones to be able to keep track of everyone, but such good reads, thank you Christerpjer, and hope you can keep up you right with the cancer.xx
You'll never know what you will discover if you never leave what you have always known. Cat was given an opportunity to go on one more adventure before she got married. She almost got herself killed in the process. Will her discoveries be worth the risks they present and the hardships she endured?
I guess I own a great majority of Chris’ books and rarely review any. What I think is this is about as good as he gets… usual good characters but unique action story.
Cat goes back to the Ruins of the Eternal City and deals with the issues of the warped magic there, making a discovery that will upset the balance of power even more than her very presence does.
Great story as usual. I have read all his books and hate to finish them as I enjoy entering his world. Can't wait for the next one. Thank you Christopher Nuttall.
I really enjoyed the book as I have the other books in the series. The only thing that didn’t seem to make sense was the switch in POV. I guess I’ll wait to see if it makes sense in the next book.
I just can't put this series down, or indeed, any of the series written in this world. Thank you Christopher for your continuous exciting writing. Sarah Boyle
This is a fantastic continuation of the Zero Enigma series. It was good to get back to Cat’s point of view after diverting to other (albeit interesting) point of view characters over the past few books.
We (finally!) return to Cat as protagonist, after laying a lot of background in the preceding 6 (!) stories.
The magic field around the former imperial capital is warping and changing. Cat and a group are sent to investigate. She's far from the nearly helpless girl she was last time she was there, but there are also more people who know what she can do and who want to use it for their own ends. And she never got very far into the city last time--there's a lot more there that is unexplored and uncontrolled.
This book was the first in the series where I had a little more trouble with suspension of disbelief. Yes, Cat should be doing great things, but... really? Bringing home the [redacted]?
Superbly plotted, rich character development, fascinating setting...completely engrossing tenth installment in the superb Zero Enigma series. Christopher G. Nuttall really hit all the notes right, with a wonderfully balanced book. It was fantastic the point of view returned to Cat, our original point of view. But all the other characters, many from the past and a few new ones, were used to perfection. It was quite fascinating to see what the author "did" to Rebecca, Adam, Master Niven, and so many more. I just loved this perfect episode in the series. Well-done! Highly recommended reading.
