In Focus Divination: Your Personal Guide

Rate this book
Learn the basics of how to read secret signs and symbols to provide insight, inspiration, and direction about the future.

This accessible and beautifully designed guide includes a frameable poster featuring popular methods of divination.

Divination is the art of extracting hidden meaning from the present by using supernatural tools, or oracles, as guidance for the future. Some ancient divinatory methods may seem primitive now, such as shamans in antiquity observing animal entrails, while some methods have remained popular throughout the ages. Diviners today still use methods that draw on the environment, including reading runes or cards , floromancy (reading flowers), and even conchomancy (reading seashells). Our questions might differ from our ancestors’, but we still harbor the same basic needs and keen desire to know, understand, and improve the future . To help you see and change it for the better , There’s something here for every diviner, and you can use what you already have on hand for magickal purposes. Combining elegance and expertise, this is your essential modern guide to an ancient tradition .

The In Focus series applies a modern approach to teaching the classic body, mind, and spirit subjects. Authored by experts in their respective fields, these beginner’s guides feature smartly designed visual material that clearly illustrates key topics within each subject. As a bonus, each book includes reference cards or a poster, held in an envelope inside the back cover, that give you a quick, go-to guide containing the most important information on the subject.

This review originally appeared on The Magical Buffet on 02/09/2022.

There are loads of different ways to practice divination. I should know, I profiled several for my Patrons on Patreon. (shameless plug for my Patreon) However, for evidence to this fact you need to look no further than “In Focus: Divination: Your Personal Guide” by Steven Bright. Bright is a full-time tarot reader that has created a tarot deck, oracle deck, and a kipper deck. He’s written a book about tarot and one about deck design. I’m not saying Bright is the only person who could write this type of book, but he’s certainly more than qualified.

This book, “Divination: Your Personal Guide,” offers an amazing variety of information about styles of divination: Lenormand cards, Kipper cards, playing cards, Elder Futhark Runes, Witches’ Runes, casting charms, diving with crystals, reading colors, reading buttons, reading tea leaves, reading flowers, reading shells, the I Ching, and dice divination. Several of these I hadn’t even considered as divination methods! And Bright does an excellent job of providing enough information that you can start experimenting with the types of divinations outlined in the book immediately. “Divination” is helpfully illustrated and includes an instructional poster.

“Divination: Your Personal Guide” by Steven Bright is a wellspring of inspiration for anyone interested in divination.

A great beginners guide to the a different forms of divination. I loved the illustrations and how accessible the writing was. It was easy to follow and included well known practices such as card reading and tea leaf reading but also include unique forms such as divination through buttons, flowers, ribbons. I enjoyed the structure and recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about divination.

thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you, NetGalley for a chance to read and review this book!

I found this to be a very interesting overview of the different methods available in case you wanted to learn more about divination. I will say that it was fairly short and other methods could have been included to make this a more comprehensive book. That being said, this book is purely for beginners.

The more books I read, the more I'm drawn to Lenorman cards, even though I really should focus on tarot for now. This is the first I'm hearing about Kipper cards, Witches Runes, reading buttons, flowers, and I Ching. I found the chapter on divination through Dice to be slightly unclear, and the changing in I Ching could be better explained; a few more pages on both would have made this a much better read.

From what I can see, Steven Bright has written more books on this subject, so I will probably check those out! Given that I'm still struggling with tarot cards, it's probably going to be his book 'In Focus Tarot'.

Thank you to both #NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group/Wellfleet Press for providing me an advance copy of Steven Bright’s spiritual work, In Focus Divination, in exchange for an honest review.

#InFocusDivination serves as a how-to guidebook on all things divination, including how to read cards from a standard playing set, flowers, runes, gemstones, tarot, charms, dice, tea leaves, and essentially, anything else that provides insight into the signs and symbols around you.

If you are searching for a beginner’s guide to divination, I highly recommend you start here. There are photos, simple descriptions, and it covers all basic information regarding the signs and symbols that people often come across in daily life.

Found this is be very repetitive with all the different types of divination mention.
Each type of divination is similar sure but each would have its different aspects yet i found it all to be focused around the same basic "Past Present & Future" but just explained differently, it was boring.
Not to mention the fact that's there's an error in the printing of the runes picture being in the wrong description.
Goes to show the people writing this and editing it don't know enough about the subject to pick up on an easy mistake, And yes i double checked myself and its also wrong in the "In Focus Wicca" book that this series is published in with.
Which means its a copy and past job and that's just lazy (even though its apparently written by different authors)

In Focus Divination

ARC Provided by NetGalley

Ok so if anyone needed a quick crash course of some different forms of divination, not Tarot or Oracle cards I have found the book for you. There were so many different forms of divination explored here. From Runes to buttons. It is not exactly what I expected when I requested the book nor what I was really looking for but it was still very interesting. I liked all of the visuals that were included so sections are very easily identifiable and understandable. This is a great beginner’s guide if you are looking to explore different kinds of divination.

I found this book really interesting, and a I learnt a lot of new info about Divination from reading... who knew that you could use shells!?!

The book was laid out nicely, and I loved the illustrations and graphics.
It was a good book for beginners. It went over a lot of different divination methods, and explained them with a 'key' - but it didn't go into any more detail than that. So a good one to get you started, and get you interested in the idea and practice of divination.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is a great beginners guide on all things divination. The structure is nice, and provides basic information on how to read everything form the expected tarot and crystals to standard playing cards, flowers, runes, charms, dice, tea leaves, and shells. I’d definitely say this is a good start for those interested in the idea and practice of divination.

Quick impressions: Overall, the book is well written and very easy to read. Nothing in it is complicated. It does present just the basics. If you really want to go in depth, you may want to find additional resources for areas that may interest you. A small issue is that the book lacks a bibliography and/or recommended reading list. That could have added a bit more value. Still, as a guide to learn more and start exploring these practices the book works well.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me this ARC to review.

I have just started with tarot in the past few months and I wanted to get more information on it as well as other forms of divination. I found that this book helped with learning tarot and gave me an interest in runes and other forms of divination. I found this helpful for a beginner!

A great book for beginners interested in divination. It doesn't go into too much detail and there are quite a few methods of divination missing. A good starting point but if you want to learn more then you will have to read other books on the subject.

🌱OVERVIEW

~ Do I want a physical copy of this book? — YES!
~ Do I believe it will help me improve my random divination abilities? — MAYBE! It will at LEAST point me in the right direction.
~ Who is for? — The curious, the scholars and the gifted.

The book does an excellent job introducing one and all to the HIGHLY comprehensive and well described, forms of divination. For each type, the author provides a background to the method, how it can be done and some recommendations. The book focuses on ‘lesser known’ or ‘lesser shared’ methods of divination - including playing cards, charms, crystals, colours, buttons, flowers, shells and dice among SEVERAL others 😌 - If you aren’t curious by now, this book is not for you.

A very interesting read and introduction into different forms of divination. A solid start for those trying to find something that speaks to them and several forms of divination to dig into.

♡🌱 But that’s just me ;)

Fascinating look at a variety of forms of divination, some I had heard of, many I had not, presented in digestible depth and detail and accompanied by helpful illustrations and visualizations. Great prompts for trying out the practices yourself, and interesting bits on the history of these diverse methods.
