Until he meets Pundit, a 112-year-old watchmaker who was part of Bose’s Indian National Army and is building an ‘Anti-Clock‘, which can turn back time. When Loppo too hears of the Anti-Clock and desires to possess it, the inevitable battle becomes a reality.

About the author

V. J. James was born in Changanassery, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He attended St.Theresa's Higher Secondary School, Vazhappally and St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Champakulam, before studying at St. Berchmans College, Changanacherry. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering. He currently works for Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, as an engineer.
He is known for his unique style of presenting subjects in Malayalam literature world. His first book, Purapaadinte Pusthakam (പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം), was published by DC Books as the winning novel in the novel competition which was conducted as a part of the 25th anniversary celebration of DC Books in 1999. Malayalam film Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol (English: When the Grapevines Sprout) loosely based on the short story Pranayopanishath by V. J. James. His style of narration gained much attention and praise.

Anti-Clock by VJ James and translated from the Malyalam by Ministhy S is quite the thing: there is a tinge of absurdist fiction in the way the narrative brings in certain plot elements and themes while also being philosophical. Shortlisted for this year's @thejcbprize here's a book that wears its allegorical flavor throughout the narrative and musings of the main protagonist. It might work for you, it might not but that doesn't take away from the many layered approach this one takes.

The author probes the question of death, mortality and moral questions with many a Biblical references in the narrative and pitches the setting in the world of a coffin maker whose childhood friend is a grave digger. That their parents before them were friends tell you how the professions revolving around death while inextricably linked to the world of the living is an uncomfortable reminder to the rest of the people about their own race against time and mortality.

The writing brings in elements of Malyalam literature and socio cultural legacies through the mentions of the writings of Vaikom Basheer while also giving a wry commentary on the way individuals can still reap their own personal benefits inspite of the Communist political wind blowing in the state. More than the protagonists and the tensions in play between them, it is what they signify and what they have to say about their belief systems that forms the core of the book. Read it if you love reading more to the narrative.

The book follows the life of Hendri, a coffin maker from a small imaginary village of Aadi Nadu. We see the world and characters through his point of view and engage with it through his meditations from the corner of his coffin shop.

Hedri, a devote Christian often turns to bible to weigh his options whenever at cross roads. He ponders over heavy philosophical topics because of his inner turmoil and his relationship(or lack thereof) with the other inhabitants of his village.

The book is provides a very real insight into the life of a coffin maker, the taboos associated with the profession and the struggles of a widower who has nothing else to live other than to fulfil his revenge.

This book reminded me so much of English August, another favourite of mine, which added to the joys.
Whenever I read a translated book I think about this question a lot: who made this book this good? the author or the translator. I still don't have an answer.

There have ben days when while sitting idle I wonder why time never stops or freezes. You cannot go back for a moment nor change some outcomes, you cannot relive past moments no matter how momentous they are and so on. Time is certainly one of the most non malleable aspects that mankind has ever put together as a construct. This again begs the question as to whether all of this is about seconds, minutes, hours and days ? Is there something deeper at play around the whole nature of time that makes its presence felt across all aspects of life on planet Earth ? Such are the nature of the questions that V.J. James tries to address in his novel Anticlock.

The hub of this story is a mysterious centenarian named Pandit who runs a watch repairing shop in a remote village near the Neyyar Dam in Trivandrum, Kerala. Pandit was a PoW in the Malayan campaign under the British-Indian army and later became a member of the newly formed Indian National Army under Subhash Chandra Bose. Beyond this, very little is known about the man and he is not forthcoming to tell his story either. He lives in in his shop and is surrounded by clocks and watches all through the day but in his mind is a strange idea of creating an anti-clock which would help in setting back time and also in resurrecting past events. The person who sets him forth on this journey is also the spoke ( or even spokes) of this story – Henry who is a devout Christian and a coffin maker by trade. Henry is a timid, silent and intensely passionate man who prefers a quiet life and yet tragedy finds him again and again. After losing his entire family to an accident, Henry lives on only with the thought of revenge in his mind against the perpetrator. The antagonist of this story is Loppo who is an obscenely rich man with a finger in every dirty pie – money laundering, unlicensed stone quarries and shady real estate deals. The larger brush stroke of the narrative is how Henry settles his scores with Loppo.

If I only stop with this much of a description, it will not be doing justice to the overall themes of the book. While the three characters and their journeys form the packing material, the core of the story is about how little voices can eventually strike a blow against authoritarian behaviour. The timid Henry pitted against the rash and brutal Loppo is a David V/s Goliath story at one glance and yet it is also about how liberty stands defiantly against oppression. Loppo symbolizes the uncaring and irresponsible side of industrial development which destroys nature and does not think twice about anyone standing in their way. The story while traversing through the nature of time is also an allegory of life in today’s world. The anti-clock is equally important in how it accomplishes its objective of reliving past moments but not in the way we would imagine it to be. It is a mark of James’s story telling skill that the anti-clock does not end up being a McGuffin in the overall plot.

This is an observational story where Hendri, the coffin maker, watches the world go by in front of him as he carves one coffin after next. The coffin maker comes to his profession by the way of discovering genuine humane moment, the impact that latches him to the person from who he inherits the business. His own life is marred by tragedy and he struggles with his deep rooted hatred for another man. Being a man of faith, he relies on Bible for clarity as his need for revenge is deep and undiluted with time.
Time passes, people live and die and the man makes coffin. The crisis of life and death, of the life one leads and the fatality of it, the profitability of the occupation directly tied to mass deaths - the author James navigates it carefully, the reactions of the villagers echoing the mounting political tension in the state. Though the thinly veiled political machination of the time is well woven into the story which can be easily missed, its not enough to get through the narrative. But then again, its the readers prerogative and preference which would make the book more or less enjoyable.

The narration habitually meanders without reason, or reasons that didn't excite me and thus the second act of the story felt quite long. As a whole, pretty enjoyable.

My 3rd book from the 2021 JCB Prize shortlist, Anti-Clock has a handful of fascinating ingredients for a wonderful novel. Hendri, a coffin maker in a rural Christian community in the South of India, is obsessed with revenge over his nemesis, Satan Loppo, who he accuses of defiling his cherished wife Beatrice by kissing her and later destroying his family. Such is his hate, Hendri has already prepared a coffin in eager anticipation of his enemy’s death.

We know Satan Loppo himself through the gossip that reaches the coffin shop, chiefly from his chauffeur David, the son of Hendri’s best friend, Antappan the grave digger. Loppo has devastated the hillsides around the village with his quarries, from which he has become a wealthy man. Within the grounds of his house he has installed a submersible glass “suite” which allows him to relax and entertain whilst watching the fish in his pond.

Then we have the mysterious watchmaker, Pundit, who becomes a close friend of the coffin-maker. He fought for independence with Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who gave him a watch he carries with him, gifted to Netaji by Hitler. Pundit is now 112 years old and has embarked on manufacturing an Anti-Clock that will turn back time.

The strangeness of these characters is heightened by the charming idiosyncrasies of their speech and the occasional brilliant humour.

Sadly, for me the novel was less than the sum of its parts. Hendri dedicates much time to religious and philosophical ruminations about life and death that I personally found tiresome, like the biblical quotations that start each chapter, which didn’t seem to move the story on. I myself would have liked to delve more into the relationships between Hendri and Grace (a fellow coffin-maker who was in love with him) and Beatrice and Loppo. And I felt let down by the Anti-Clock itself, which I had expected to deliver more!

The story is about a Coffin maker named Hendri. His wife was Beatrice and they had 3 kids. His best friend Antappan, was a grave digger. I started liking the book from this same point when the author wrote about the relationship between the 2 professions.

Hendri had one aim in life - to kill his nemesis Satan Loppo. He had caused a lot of trouble in the village and was responsible for the misery of many people. Hendri had carved a coffin for him many years ago and had inscribed the initials S.L. on it.

The hero of the story, actually was Pundit, who was 112 years old, running a watch shop. He had worked closely during the independence times with Subhash Chandra Bose. He had designed an Anti-clock, a clock that moved backward in its direction, which meant that it would take the times of the past. He then gifted the clock to Hendri and passed away the next day.

After the clock came inside Hendri's coffin shop, many insightful events started taking place in his life.

I badly wanted to read it ever since it was shortlisted for the JCB Prize. And oh yes, undoubtedly, I loved the book.

A coffin maker struggling with philosophy of life, torn between his father's call to piety and his own desire for vengeance, narrates his life story. His ruminations often recounting his life and his father's wisdom interspersed with his love for family who were cruelly taken away from him.
His laments that his love for literature in school that his teacher acknowledged and asked others to learn from didn't take him anywhere in life. He, his father's favourite, ended up taking up his profession.
There is politics and religion all over this wonderful narrative. It weaves in greed, lust, desire, love - both unrequited and dangerous, exploitation, history and friendships. A man's fear and insecurities. His unwillingness to face the world. And how his encounter with an INA veteran who now repairs clocks changes things for him. But all this builds around what is primarily a conflict between the coffin maker and a ruthless business man bent on exploiting not just the village's resources but also it's myths and folklore.

Enjoyed it so much. The premise - of someone profiting from death - is super interesting, and yet, the narrative never loses its earthiness.

This doesn't deserve to be on the JCB shortlist - at least not the original Malayalam version. It sounded like a cheap novel from Manorama weekly, especially the language. Dragging and hollow, with unnecessarily long and shallow monologues in every chapter. The previous book,'Nireeswaran' by the author, was good and I started reading anticlock because I liked Nireeswaran. But Anticlock was an utter disappointment.

If you are able to get through the first 100 pages, you are in for a treat. Almost seems like that's the price you pay for an intriguing thought provoking second half. I thoroughly enjoyed how creatively the author makes the anti clock work. If you are philosophically and spiritually inclined you will like the book.

അന്തർമുഖനും വളരെയധികം അപകർഷതാബോധം പേറുന്നവനുമായ ഒരു പാവം പിടിച്ച ശവപ്പെട്ടി കച്ചവടക്കാരനായ ഹെൻറിയുടെ കഥയാണ് ആന്റിക���ലോക്ക്. ലളിതമാണെങ്കിലും ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ ചിന്തോദ്ദീപകമായ പല നിമിഷങ്ങളും നോവലിൽ കൊത്തുപണികൾ പോലെ കാണാം. സത്യത്തിൽ ഒരുപാട് പറഞ്ഞു പഴകിയ ശവപ്പെട്ടി കച്ചവടക്കാരന്റെ ക്ലിഷേകൾ നോവലിൽ കാണാൻ സാധിക്കും. പക്ഷെ അവ രസച്ചരട് പൊട്ടാതെ ഭംഗിയായി വി.ജെ.ജെയിംസ് കോർത്ത് വച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ആന്റിക്ലോക്ക് എന്ന പേരിനോട് (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അത് വായിച്ച് പുസ്തകം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത വായനക്കാരോട്)നീതി പുലർത്താൻ നോവലിന്റെ കഥക്ക് ആയിട്ടില്ലെന്നുള്ളത് സത്യമാണ്. ആന്റിക്ലോക്കിനും അതുണ്ടാക്കിയ പണ്ഡിറ്റിനും കഥയിൽ ചെറിയ ഉയർച്ച ഉണ്ടാക്കാൻ സാധിച്ചു എന്നത് മാറ്റി നിർത്തിയാൽ, പ്രതീക്ഷക്കൊത്തു ഉയരാൻ ആ ഘടകത്തിന് സാധിച്ചിട്ടില്ല. എന്നിരുന്നാലും ഒരു സാധാരണ വായനക്ക് ഒട്ടും തന്നെ മുഷിപ്പിക്കാതെ പിടിച്ചിരുത്താൻ നോവലിസ്റ്റിനു സാധിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.

ഇൻട്രി എന്ന് എല്ലാവരും വിളിക്കുന്ന ഹെൻട്രി എന്ന ശവപ്പെട്ടി പണിക്കാരന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെന്റേയും പ്രതികാരത്തിന്റേയും കഥയാണിത്. പഴയകാല ഐ എൻ എ പോരാളിയായ 112 വയസ്സുകാരനായ പണ്ഡിറ്റ്, കാലത്തിന്റെ ദിശ തെറ്റിക്കുന്ന ഘടികാരത്തെ നിർമ്മിക്കുന്നു. നെയ്യാർ ഡാമിനോട് ചേർന്ന് പ്രദേശത്തെ ജീവിതവും സംഭാഷണ ശൈലിയും പശ്ചാത്തലമായി വരുന്നു. പ്രപഞ്ചത്തിനെ വെല്ലുവിളിക്കുന്ന ഏകാധിപത്യത്തിന് എല്ലാകാലവും നിലനിൽപ്പില്ലയെന്നും കാലത്തിന്റെ സമയ സൂചികൾ ഒരുനാൾ അവർക്കെതിരെ പ്രതികരിക്കുമെന്നും കാണിച്ചു തരുന്നു. ആന്റപ്പനും ഹെൻട്രി തമ്മിലുള്ള സൗഹൃദവും ഡേവിഡും ശാരിയും തമ്മിലുള്ള പ്രണയവും സാത്താൻ ലോപ്പയുടെ ദുഷ്ട ചെയ്തികളും പറയാതെ പോയ പ്രണയത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ ജീവിതം തന്നെ ഹോമിച്ച ഗ്രേസിയും എല്ലാം മനസ്സിൽ തങ്ങി നിൽക്കുന്നു.

Anticlock, is fundamentally a straight-forward revenge drama, its confrontation contains enough thrills too. Vj james is one of few writters who comes up with unique ideas and makes us care more about his writing. In this novel he uses an Anticlock as protagonist along with Indree, that worked out quite well. Also the writter scored big time in conceiving an emotional bond between father and son, he makes sure that the father-son dynamic gets proper space to breathe within the story, their conversation is deep, thorough and will leaves you smile.

A tremendously significant South Indian novel on the climatic problem, time, fate, faith, and inequality.
We follow Hendri, our main character, as he makes coffins in the town of Adi Nadu, and what appears to be his rivalry with Satan Loppo, a peer from his youth. However, it goes much beyond that. This book masterfully weaves the philosophy of simpler things in a way that leaves us wondering why we never thought of things this way.

It was a great reading experience. Though the story was slightly tragedic and related to death in almost pages, the novel gives some light to our inner soul. The Novel talks a lot about the spiritual eternity. The characters are well defined.

I read the English version of this book and I really liked the story. It is a light read with a great character arc. The story taps into the psych of a human and that’s what makes it beautiful.
