Crossfire is the second in Sam Hawken's series of novellas featuring Camaro Espinoza. I don't want to dwell on the plot too much in case it spoil things for readers who haven't yet read Camaro Run. In this novella Camaro heads to New Orleans to visit her sister but she has a Mexican cartel hit man on her trail and while there, she also gets involved in a casino heist which has fatal consequences.
There is genuine tension throughout the story. The plot is fast paced and full of twists and is up there with the likes of Elmore Leonard. I also enjoyed Hawken's sense of place, as New Orleans seems to be a city of two halves. One is buzzing, with bars full of drunken tourists, while the suburbs remain a wasteland after being blighted by Katrina and you really get a feel for the difference between both sides of this place.
I think this is even better than Camaro Run and in other or lesser hands the story could have been drawn out into a full length novel but Hawken's writing cuts right to the bone, leaving all the fat behind.
Looking forward to the next instalment in the series 'Drum'.

First up, three stars seems a little harsh, but going by the Goodreads numbers, it's about right. I "liked it", rather than "really liked it". But I didn't think it was quite as strong as the first of this series of novellas, Camaro Run, which I gave four stars.

Other than that, though, what you get is essentially what you hope you'll get: more of the same, full-on action-packed thrills. Again author Sam Hawken has gone for no let up in the pace, but the plot is a little slighter than in the first book, and I for one would have quite liked to see more of cop Marlene. I suspect she might return in one of the upcoming reads.

I like this plan of releasing one novella a month for the summer period. It's like going out to the comic-book store and grabbing the latest adventure of your favourite superhero or anti-hero. Great idea.
