Peter Nealen is a former Recon Marine, a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, and something of an aspiring renaissance man (emphasis on aspiring). He has long been a reader of history, philosophy, folklore, science fiction, and fantasy, and is the author of the American Praetorians series of paramilitary thrillers as well as the Jed Horn series of supernatural thrillers.
Overall, as a mil scifi story this holds up well - albeit that the enemy & their designs are basically the same as many other such stories. At the base level you have planets with their own militaries & then you have mercs for hire - who are part of 'Brotherhoods'. It's ridiculously named. They are "insert name here" + brothers. Sounds like an Indie video game. The units are based around a pseudo-Roman Legion and the speech matches that yet other people don't speak in that manner of speech. It's tiresome and fake. Their weapons are called 'powerguns'. Really? The author attempts to insert some hard sci-fi elements regarding the ships and space flight in general, yet fails, it becomes too forced and honestly I skimmed through at least 40% of this book. BUT I STILL KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON. now, that, is a pet hate of mine - in the modern age I find more and more authors adding tons of unnecessary drivel that you don't need to read. Words and words just to add bulk. The character names are sort of ancient Roman names or a take on an actual English name. There is still some mystery in terms of what really is going on. You don't really like any of the characters. Had this been a story with normal names and normal military units then it would have been far more enjoyable.
I thought this first book was pretty cool! I liked the intro to basically Roman legions in space enforcing peace in different regions. They arnt an empire though, they are more like the Jedi. Peacekeepers with a limited fighting force and now they have to fight an empire. Kind of reminded me of the war hammer pc game series.
Review of: The Fall of Valero, (A Military Sci-fi Series, book 1)
It's A good start on a space adventure worth reading. I'm looking forward to reading more of the same. The characters are strong and the story line stays upbeat, hope you enjoy reading.
Read 20% and scanned an additional 20%, finally bailing. The writing is childishly bad, not that a child wrote it. The basic execution of adequate writing is absent from this adult author’s train wreck of a book.
This adventure could readily stand-alone and need no further development. I like that because it leaves the final or future outcomes up to the imagination of the reader.
A brilliant start to a new series. Space battles and ground action, that thrill. Great characters with realistic situations and lots of heroic tales. I look forward to the next one 😀
Good read, will download the second book. There is intrigue and background development of characters in this book. I am excited to see how the series answers questions that are brought up in this book.
Gotta say it’s very detail in its combat. Which made the combat feel (to me) too drawn out. However, for the story being told it fits. I really see this be an FPS game. I would play it for it for the story and now I can’t wait to read the next book!
