Silent Protector by Katie Reus
Verona Bay series book 3. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone. Previous couples do appear occasionally but you don’t need to know them.
Mac has been enamored with Adeline since she moved into town but she turned him down when he first asked her out. An accidental double booking at a friends cabin and a storm has the two in forced proximity and heightened tension. Getting home doesn’t solve the dilemma as an ex-con neighbor decides that Mac needs to die along with anyone connected to him.

High octane tension from middle to end with a crazy killer in the small town where everyone knows where you are from moment to moment. There’s no hiding place he won’t find.
Plenty of romance and family time Mac’s two younger brothers.
I loved Adeline’s game prowess and how the brothers treated it with humor and grace. Her alone status changes to being surrounded by family and good friends. It’s heartwarming.
The epilogue includes characters from the previous two books and brings the trilogy to a nice close.

I received a copy of this from NetGalley. I have also purchased a copy to share.

Mac and Adeline: Mac, the quiet former marine who has a talent with woodworking, and he's responsible for his two younger brothers. Adeline, the co-owner of a pet grooming business who has a secretive past. The attraction is immediate but there are a few obstacles in the way. When they are double booked at a friends cabin and bad weather causes them to stay together in that cabin, they finally open up only to be stalled again when danger threatens Mac and his family. The last thing he wants to do is get Adeline in danger after finding out about her past.

Mac is extremely protective of his Adeline and his brothers. He's what I call an Alpha Gentleman. It's a great mix of that dominant male who also displays gentlemanly behavior. He teaches his brothers the characteristics that woman like in a man. For example, learning how to cook and not to expect the woman to do it all. He's also very capable of keeping Adeline and his brothers safe. His military background had prepped him for the danger they encounter. He's a big part of why I enjoyed this book.

Adeline is also a heroine to admire. I was a bit surprised about a revealing secret towards the end of the book. She's been through something very traumatic and it only made her stronger. When she realized she was shying away from Mac to be safe, she pushed herself to take the leap. I liked her and I don't always like the heroines.

The more books we get in this small town setting, the more I want read about other couples. I love getting to know all the side characters and it helps to make the book feel familiar from the start.

This author writes some of the best alpha heroes and Mac is a prime example of it. He was fiercely protective of Adeline. Even before there was a true threat to her, he was anticipating what might happen and taking steps against it. Once she was embroiled in the danger he was a force to be reckoned with as he faced it head on, determined to keep her safe...and she wasn’t even his yet.

Young Woman's Hands with Thimble and Sewing Needle Quilting - The Inspired Sewist

I really enjoyed the fact the danger and drama was not a result of this heroine’s past or anything to do with her. It was a nice change of pace for me to read something that was solely about someone else’s involvement. Adeline was a pretty awesome character. She had a rough history and watching her slowly become wrapped in love by so many of the Verona Bay characters was perfect.

Planes - Planes & Squares - Categories

This has a lot of action and a villain storyline that could easily be myself or a neighbor as I felt such a connection to the validity of it. It’s built on insta-attraction but still a very slow burn to the culmination of desire. I loved Mac’s brothers and the fact that he was as protective of them as he was of Adeline. Seeing that side of him was wonderful and had me falling even harder for him.

While it isn’t necessary to read the previous books in this series, I highly recommend that you do so just so you can make a connection to all the characters. However, this gives enough information that you can easily follow it without feeling as though you’re missing anything.

This is a Romantic Suspense, and this is the third book in the Verona Bay series. The beginning of this book pulled me into the story, and I loved that the beginning of this book is cute and sweet. The middle is the suspense starts, and I love the suspense in this book. The ending of this book is fill of action, and it was so great. I really enjoyed this book has a great mix of Romance/Action/Suspense, and I loved the characters in this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (KR Press, LLC) or author (Katie Reus) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. The plot was awesome in this book, but there was just so much that threw me out of the story that I just can't say that I enjoyed it. I kept rewriting it in my mind and that just made for a disjointed narrative.

Looking for a new start after the tragic death of her mother, Adeline Rodriguez left Miami behind. After years of trying to find "her" place she ends up in Verona Bay, Florida where she is now a co-owner in a dog grooming business. She has a lot of secrets and baggage that keeps her from attempting to have a relationship with a man. She has formed deep friendships with several women but is terrified to put herself out with a man, even the super-hot, ripped Mac Collins.

Mac Collins gave up his career in the Marines to come back to Verona Bay and raise his two young brothers after the death of their parents. The boys are now young men, Mac has a successful custom woodworking business and now he is ready for the relationship he never could have imagined in his misspent youth. He just has to get Adeline to feel the same and after the hard "no" he got to his ask for a first date, that is going to be a real problem.

When fate puts them in the same cabin on a stormy weekend, Mac and Adeline get to know each other and that "no" becomes a "yes" to that first date. The reappearance of someone from that misspent youth causes Mac to make one really tough decision, but Adeline's safety is more important. Fate has decreed that the path to HEA for Mac and Adeline is going to be muddy and filled with danger and murder.

5 Stars!!

Adeline Rodriguez is a woman who has lived through abuse with a personal tragic loss. She has established a new life in Verona Bay and now she has close friends and is a partner in a successful business.

Mac is a former Marine, and a natural born protector. After his parents deaths he left the Marines to raise his two younger brothers and he’s done a great job! Mac is definitely the silent type but his protective instincts are spot on and he’ll do what it takes to protect those he loves.

She and Mac have a very potent and powerful attraction, but neither has acted on it. Just as Mac takes the initiative, he finds himself the target of a deadly enemy. Because of this, he decides it’s best to walk away from Adeline. Unfortunately, his plan didn't work and Adeline is now a target of a psycho along with Mac and his brothers.

Silent Protector was suspenseful and filled with unexpected twists. I loved the characters and enjoyed catching up with the couples from previous books. Mac and Adeline are perfect for each other.

'Silent Protector' is the third installment of the Verona Bay series written by Katie Reus. This book can be read as a stand alone, characters from other stories are mentioned, but not having read the first two books does not impact the story.

Mac Collins and his brothers have been through a lot in their lifetime. After losing their parents, Mac gave up his military career to raise his two younger brothers. Adeline Rodriguez has had a complicated life as well. She has recently moved to the quaint town of Verona Bay from Miami to start a small business with a friend.

Adeline was offered a quiet weekend away at a friend's cabin; Mac was given the same offer. Both attempt to make the best of their situation. Upon returning home to Verona Bay, evil from Mac's past returns to impact him and his brother's and he promises to protect Adeline.

I fell in love with Mac Collins and his two brothers. The relationship that Reus developed between the three was heartwarming and Adeline compliments and completes their family. This series has been on my to read list and I look forward to catching up.

Reasons to read Silent Protector:

 Hunky former Marine
Lovable heroine who faces her fears
Danger that isn't because of the heroine's past!

I really loved both Mac and Adeline. Mac is truly a gentleman who is protective, but not over the top. Adeline has trauma in her background, but she doesn't use that as a reason to prevent her from opening up. I also loved that the suspense doesn't come from the heroine or from the relationship between the hero and heroine. The small town setting is a winner as well because you get such great side characters!

Overall, Silent Protector is a perfect binge read while quilting and sipping tea!

  POV: 3rd
  Tears: no
  Trope: former military, small town
  Triggers:
Series/Standalone: stand alone within an interconnected series
  Cliffhanger:
  HEA:

authors like Janie Crouch, Kaylea Cross, Susan Stoker...then you will probably like Silent Protector!

After finishing Deadly Past, I had my toes crossed that the next book in the series would Adeline and Mac, so to say I was thrilled that this was their book is kind of an understatement and I wasn’t disappointed. There was some craycray going on here and some “You did what?!?” moments, but overall, I loved watching as both Adeline and Mac stumbled their way to the HEA they both deserved.

I loved both Adeline and Mac. Adeline has been through hell, but she’s picked herself up and is working on finding her own happiness. Mac is just a good man. Taking care of his brothers after losing their parents and simply being an upstanding kinda guy. It’s hard not to love him. Their journey was sweet, smexy, awkward and add in a psycho to the mix and you have one hell of a ride. After the awkwardness was over, I really liked their flow. Their bantering was a lot of fun and I liked the balance of power between them. I also liked how they kinda put their foot in it on an equal level as well. But in the end, I was very happy with how everything worked out for them.

I read some crazy, dark, deviant things and while this one doesn’t fall truly into either ~ at least on the “romance” side of it ~ there was some crazy going on. There were some situations that had me going “Really? Really?” that just happened ~ and no, it wasn’t only the baddie who had me reacting like that. But outside of that, I loved getting to hang out with Dylan and Joe. They were so much fun and I’m crossing my toes we get more of them in the future. It was also fun to catch up with the rest of the Verona Bay crew, though I did feel bad for Lincoln with all that was going on. But, all in all, this was a great read and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing who the next book will be about.

Compelling writing, interesting characters, and a plot that takes you in all kinds of unexpected directions.

Mac has been interested in Adeline since the moment he met her, but she keeps giving him the cold shoulder. Through a mishap, they ended up at a mutual friend's cabin at the same time during a heavy storm. They get to know each other better while hiding away from nature's fury, and Adeline starts to hope she can move on from her past with Mac by her side. But Mac finds himself in a dangerous situation and he distances himself from Adeline to protect her.

This is the third book in the Verona Bay series, but it stands well on its own. I haven't read any of the others yet, but they are on my to-read list now for sure.

Mac and Adeline are both interesting, well-developed characters. Mac is so confident, protective, and take-charge. Adeline is no shrinking violet, and she kept up with him and everything going on around them. They make a great team, but also a great couple. The bad guy, Harlan, kept them on their toes. It always makes a story more exciting if the villain is also interesting and unpredictable.

I can definitely recommend this if you like romantic suspense novels.

Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

SILENT PROTECTOR is the third instalment in Katie Reus’ contemporary, adult VERONA BAY erotic, romantic suspense series. This is former US Marine turned woodworker Mac Collins, and pet groomer Adeline Rodriguez’ story line. SILENT PROTECTOR can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.

Told from several third person perspectives including Adeline and Mac, SILENT PROTECTOR follows the building romance and relationship between former US Marine turned woodworker Mac Collins, and pet groomer Adeline Rodriguez. Adeline Rodriguez was spending her time off , her vacation at a friend’s cabin in the woods but found herself sharing said time off with former US Marine Mac Collins. Mac’s friend Derek loaned the use of his cabin to our story line hero never once mentioning the ‘guest’ with whom he was about to face down but the approach of a sudden storm turned violent forcing our couple to reconsider what’s next.

Meanwhile, Mac’s brother Joe discovered a possible meth lab on property adjacent to the family home, and with Mac’s return, a series of attacks including an explosion, fire, and several murders force Mac, his brothers and Adeline on the run. On the run, trying to stay one step ahead of a possible killer, Mac and Adeline’s relationship becomes something more, something neither one realized was about to happen. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Mac and Adeline, and the potential fall-out as a drug dealer turned killer sets his sights on our story line couple.

Mac Collins has lusted after Adeline Rodriguez ever since they met but every opportunity to get together has been cancelled by our hero, including a recent attempt at a Saturday night date. Mac knows Adeline’s past has left many scars both inside and out, and in this, he refuses to place Adeline in the direct line of fire when a killer comes gunning for vengeance and death. Adeline Rodriguez knows betrayal and abuse first hand but struggles with Mac’s on again, off again attraction to our story line heroine. On the run, and in hiding for their lives, Mac and Adeline are often just one step ahead of a man targeting their lives.

The relationships between Adeline and Mac is a sort-of friends to lovers that struggles with Mac’s inability to commit to a date. Not once but twice Mac has bailed on our story line heroine, and in this Adeline battles between head and heart believing Mac is unwilling to move forward from the past. Time spent together brings our couple closer, and with a killer on the loose, Mac and Adeline must be ever vigilant in an effort to survive what vengeance has in store. The limited $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Mac’s younger brothers Joe and Dylan,as well as Chief Robert Hayward, his son Harlan, and the return of Serenity and Lucas (Dark Memento 1), and Autumn and Lincoln (Deadly Past 2). The requisite evil has many faces.

SILENT PROTECTOR is a small town romantic suspense story with plenty of action, betrayal, vengeance and death. The fast paced premise is intriguing, inviting and captivating; the slow building romance is seductive and encouraging ; the characters are edgy and consuming.

The third installment of the Verona Bay series is a suspense filled page turner.
Mac and Adeline are thrown together in a secluded cabin and become friends. She has a lot of baggage from the past and is afraid of relationships Mac is a alpha sexy male. Breaking through her defense is his goal.

“Well, I’m about to take a hot bath, pour some wine, and curl up by the fire with a book. So bring on the jealousy.”

This is a slow burn romance with some crazy killer on the side. As always I look forward to what this series brings next.

Silent Protector, book three in Katie Reus' Verona Bay series is an enjoyable story that wonderfully mixes intrigue, mystery and suspense with a slow burn romance and likable characters. With vivid description, thrilling suspense and action, and sweet, emotional romance, Silent Protector, Katie Reus’ Verona Bay book 3, explores the chemistry that has simmered between Mac Collins and Adeline Rodriguez since Dark Memento (#1). I’ve been waiting for this one! Adeline made a fresh start, building a new life for herself in Verona Bay. With close friends and as co-owner of a pet grooming business, she’s not the woman who fled her life, burying the secrets of her violent past. But those secrets and her past, which Adeline shares with no one, are keeping her from having a relationship. When Mac asks her out, she avoids him out of fear. Mac had reconciled himself to not having a chance with her until they were stuck alone together in a remote cabin during a storm. And, finally, just when Adeline decides to take a chance and go out with Mac, who has wanted her since their first meeting, he pushes her away. Instead of giving up on him, she confronts Mac, catching the attention of a dangerous, vengeful killer from his past.

Strong, sexy, dependable, and protective of those he cares about, Mac knows what he wants, and he’s open, honest, and straightforward about it. He wants Adeline, and he’s made no secret of that. But the last thing Mac wants is for her to be hurt because of him. So, as much as he wants her, he’s willing to let her go to keep her safe. While she is burdened still by her past and afraid of being hurt again, losing Mac, or things not working out, Adeline wants him as much as he wants her. After spending time with him at the cabin, she knows he’s worth the risk. The moments in the novel that focus on them spending time together are sweet, sexy, emotional, and filled with sparks. I loved them growing closer as friends at the cabin. I would have enjoyed Silent Protector way more if the novel included more moments like this and less time focused on the POV, mental state, and sex life of the villain,

My expectations were high. Reus delivers with the suspense, action, and overall plot, as usual. Unfortunately, however, the development of Mac’s and Adeline’s romantic relationship is disappointing because there simply isn’t enough time spent on it. Too much time focusing on the villain’s POV shortchanges that development. I had been looking forward to their novel and would have preferred more time spent with them getting to know each other better and transitioning from acquaintances to friends to lovers. Instead, they lost crucial POV time to the villain and substantial time to Lincoln, the sheriff. At least, however, his POV focuses on content critical to the plot. One thing guaranteed to turn me off in a romance is content about the villain’s sex life/sexual activities included, not to mention before/near love scenes between the hero and heroine. Mood killer! I had to take a break and get my mind refreshed and come back to finish the novel. Silent Protector is a dark, intense, thrilling, suspenseful follow-up that focuses a bit too much on the villain instead of on the protagonists and developing the romance for my liking.

Adeline has started her life over again in Verona Bay, leaving behind the violence and secrets of her past to create a successful business with her new friend. She doesn’t date much, due to her past, which causes her to avoid and turn down date requests. A double booking at a mutual friends’ cabin has them in forced proximity during a crazy storm, giving Adeline hope that maybe she can move beyond her traumatic past.

Mac is protective, bossy, and used to being in charge. As he settles into having adult brothers, he finds himself torn between protecting them like he did when they were younger and letting them help in tense situations. When a situation arises that puts his family in danger, he closes ranks by canceling his much anticipated date with Adeline at the very last minute. But it was too late and Adeline’s response to his canceling puts her in the crosshairs despite his attempts to keep her safe.

I loved these two. From their unexpected weekend together to the way they addressed the new dangers when they returned home there was always something going on. The pub has a great mix of romance, suspense, and dramatic action to keep the pages turning. I enjoyed the beginning, but really loved the middle to end as the action heated up.

This series can be read as standalones. Each couple has their own complete story within the pages of each book, but I love the way former couples appear to play support roles as the series progresses. There are still stories to tell in Verona Bay and I look forward to more!

Silent Protector is the third book in the Verona Bay series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone title, but as a huge fan, I highly recommend reading them all in order for the best experience. However, there’s plenty of backstory woven throughout so you will not be lost regarding the plot or who’s who among the characters.

Katie Reus is one of my automatic 1-click authors and has been for a while. Her characters are easy to get to know, easy to relate to, and I usually love them all, and her plots are always well thought out. The mystery and suspense are always fresh, as well. (She also writes some great PNR books, so if that’s your jam, be sure to check those out!) Honestly, though. Sometimes an author’s work just resonates with you from the get-go, and you snatch up every book they release, which is exactly how I feel about Katie Reus’s romantic suspense books. I tend to devour them in one sitting, and Silent Protector was no exception.

It’s been a while since the last Verona Bay book was released, so I was more than ready for this one to hit my Kindle. It’s full of romance, suspense, fast-paced action, and characters you can’t help but fall in love with—and some you just can’t help but hate, which is essential to great romantic suspense.

Adeline Rodriguez is a woman who has lived through abuse. She has established a new life in Verona Bay. Here she has friends and a successful business. She and Mac Collins have a powerful attraction, but they haven't acted on it. Just as Mac takes the initiative, he finds himself the target of a deadly enemy. I liked how he tried to protect Adeline by walking away. However, I really wish that he told her what was happening rather than ghosting her. Unfortunately, his plan didn't work. Now Mac, his brother and Adeline are all targets. I wanted this vicious killer stopped. Thought I wasn't sure if they would be able to. Katie Reus kept me on the edge of my seat with Silent Protector. The story was suspenseful and filled with unexpected twists. I cared for the characters and enjoyed catching up with some from previous stories. Mac and Adeline are perfect for each other. I loved their interaction and I was impressed that Adeline could hold her own with Mac. I always enjoy coming to Verona Bay and can't wait to come back.

I’m loving this series, I love Verona Bay and it’s unlikely inhabitants, I love interconnected standalones and all the camaraderie that familiar characters bring to a story. Book 3 has Adeline Rodriguez facing her demons again when she’s unexpectedly caught in the crosshairs of a long standing yet forgotten battle between the delectable Mac Collins and his undeserving enemy. Max is everything you could wish for in a book boyfriend. He loves fiercely, he’s extremely protective of those he loves without being smothering, and he’s hot, hot, hot. When he finally gets a shot with Adeline he goes and blows it - all for her good of course. Sadly things don’t go according to plan for either of them and herein starts a rollercoaster ride of action, suspense and romance. Great characters, a riveting storyline, and wonderful writing, I loved it. I can’t wait for more from Verona Bay.

Non stop action and suspense, this return to Verona Bay will have readers on the edge of their seats. A well written story, there will be some steamy scenes, but don’t expect Adeline and Mac to crawl under the sheets quickly. The underlying current of attraction is intense and worth the wait! Readers will love Mac and Adeline, while also adoring Mac’s brothers as we get to know them as well. The newest addition to Verona Bay is perfect.

Mac was definitely made for Silent Protector. The title of this story is Mac! I love a former Marine, the born protector. And even though the hero of this story is pretty quiet, those are the ones you need to watch out for. I swooned over Mac so many times. Add that he is a father figure to his brothers... just made melt!

Adeline - yes she holds a secret. And yes it seems that she is hiding, but that girl brings it when it all comes down to it. There is a lot of suspense and drama that will unfold. Verona Bay is in for a loop with the one that hides in the shadows.

Silent Protector is a story you need to have in your future book pile. I read this story as a stand alone. I am ready to go back to book one and two.

I love Katie Reus and auto buy all of her books, but this was not my cup of tea - the romance was secondary, I think the book spent more time on the bad guys and other characters and left the main couple underdeveloped. They did get together, but it felt kind of meh to me. I'll definitely get the next in the series and continue to support this author, especially her PNR series, which is outstanding and fun, this installment just wasn't for me.

Outstanding romantic suspense with intrigue, and mystery. Wonderful characters that were realistic and carried a lot of baggage. It was definitely a page turner and kept my interest from the beginning until the very end. The storyline was exciting and entertaining. Silent Protector is the third book in the Verona Bay series by author Katie Reus. This is a wonderful read and if you are a fan of the series you won't be disappointed. This is Mac and Adeline's story. Both are great characters and have terrific chemistry. Mac, like all of Ms. Reus' hero's, is protective of those his loves but is not domineering or stifling. He supports Adeline while doing his best to be protective. Adeline, to her credit, is not the shrinking, simpering type of heroine. She has grit, after having been through some traumatic experiences. Mac and Adeline were almost a couple until she retreated. This time around, Mac, who has been patiently waiting, is in the right place at the right time. Just when they think their time has come, someone from Mac's past threatens everything in his life.

Mac and Adeline work so well because they complement each other. There are some great scenes where she is not afraid to show her superior board game skills and triumph over both Mac and his brothers. Adeline already has a special place in her heart for Joe, but her swagger and bravado at her mad game skills leave them in awe of her. The book has a perfect balance of suspense and romance with a happily ever after for all.

I am of fan of this author's writing and her characters. There is a way to write a strong male lead to be protective without making him out to be a possessive jerk and Ms. Reus knows how to write those types of heroes perfectly. I will definitely be reading this author in the future.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy, provided to me by the publisher, KR Press, LLC through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and are in no way impacted by the manner in which I received this book.

If you want to know what a non-toxic male hero is - pretty much read any KR book! They are protective of their loved ones, not oppressive. They shield and support, not demean and belittle.
Mac is just the latest in a long line of great male leads!

Mac and Adeline were almost a thing...but when Adeline steps back Mac does what you're supposed to do - gives her room. He's not given up, ust regrouping and waiting for a signal from her that she's open to being approached.

Then just when Adeline is ready for more, Mac has to shut down their potential because someone from his past is making trouble for the family again and he doesn't want Adeline to be in the middle of it! (Can I just say that Mac's younger brother seems to find trouble like a flaming bloodhound! LOL)

Adeline and Mac were just a brilliant combination, she was a perfect foil for the boys because she is not about to do anything to make them feel anything other than in awe of her and her awesomeness at games! They can get their big boy panties in wadd all the like - she will not let ANYONE win!

Great characters, snarky and witty dialogue. Always a sucker for the wrong place/right time storyline.

P.S. Do not get on the wrong side of the Sewing and Quilting group!

2.5 estrellas

If you’re looking for secrets and twists on top of danger, you’ve come to the right place! Adeline and Mac have circled each other a bit, have had missed chances, and are now smack dab in the middle of the perfect chance to be together. Until Mac uncovers a huge problem and essentially ghosts Adeline. And I wanted to cry for her because she absolutely didn’t deserve it. Like any rightfully angry woman would do, after trying to out the hurt behind her, Adeline has it out with Mac…and ends up in danger. So these two have to find a way to fix the mess they’re in while fighting their attraction. Or do they have to fight it? When the danger finds them, they make it through together and have to decide if they’re meant to be or only a flight brought on by adrenaline. Luckily, they come to the correct conclusions, so it’s all good here. Even with that last secret that I wasn’t quite expecting. And it’s twists like that one that keep me coming back for more of this author.
