Never Just Friends #4.5

Friends with Benefits

Rate this book
Twelve years ago, I slept with my best friend’s little brother, and we’ve been sneaking around ever since.

Arlo is my weakness.

I sat back while he went to college...

I watched on proudly while he travelled the world...

I gritted my teeth when he dated other people...

Because he’s only mine when he visits home.

That’s the deal.

But spending time with him during his brother’s wedding weekend has made me realize friend with benefits is no longer enough.

I want more.

This was such a lovely, sweet, feel good story.

I loved the setting. I loved Reynolds and Arlo as main characters. Even though the story is short, I could feel the connection and chemistry between them.

The ending felt a bit rushed, but other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Edit: Read in January. Review reposted, since it got deleted yet again.

This was a sweet, cute and short read!

I was a sucker for the mutual pining between Arlo and Reynolds, and they truly had some great chemistry together.
I also love the brother's best friend trope, and this was a classic example of that!
I just really liked their dynamic, and I wish this story was longer so we could have gotten to know them better and see more depth in their relationship.

Obviously the whole set-up of this is quite ridiculous, as it's undeniably stupid how long these two have refused to just open up and communicate their feelings with each other. They've been in love for over a decade, yet refuse to do anything but hook-up during family visits..
And for some reason they've made rules on how they are not allowed to talk about their feelings or have any communication in-between visits. Dumb, right? Yes. Very. And somehow neither of them has wanted to change those rules up until now. Dumb? Yess, still very very dumb.
But, whatever, I guess it was entertaining to see them tied up in knots over each other after so many years of pining. It's dumb, but I guess sometimes some stupidity is necessary to create a sweet little novella like this.

The only real problem I had with this was that Reynolds said he would pick his bestie over Arlo if it came down to it. In the end, he didn't, but the fact that he thought he would already annoyed me beyond words:

I maybe love him more than anyone, and it's sort of weird that platonic love could be stronger than romantic love, but when it comes to me and Arlo, if Matti asked me to walk away ... I might actually consider it. It would devastate me, and I'd end up resenting him for it, but I'd do it anyway. I just have to hope he'd never ask.

I mean, if the two love interests aren't putting each other first, then really, do I even want it?

This was disappointing, tbh. It's not bad, but there are lots of lovlier novellas out there.
The story was ok, but felt a bit bland, and a bit unimaginative. Too much sex for such a short story (and not stellar writing).

Short but sweet.
I got the connection between Arlo and Reynolds, I felt their chemistry and believed that they had fallen for each other long ago.
I loved to see how they got together.
No drama, no miscommunication, this was a quick and entertaining novella.

This was such a fun, cute and steamy read. I absolutely loved it.

Would I have wanted a full novel? Absolutely. Am I happy I got to know Arlo and Reynolds at all? Absolutely.

This was excellent. I’d give it 5 stars if it was a little bit longer. Brother’s Best Friend/Best Friend’s Brother is one of my favorite tropes and this one was cute and sweet. 4 stars.

Two people are in love, but neither is willing to say it to the other.

I predict, with a high degree of confidence, that somewhere in the remaining 70% of the story they will admit their feelings to each other and reach an HEA. I don't feel a need to learn the details of how that happens.

Re-read on 7th Dec/25

I'm rating this with solid 3.75⭐.

This novella is now listed as taking place after the 4th installment, though if I remember correctly, it used to be listed after the 3rd.

Definitely read it after finishing the entire series, even if none of the characters are present here. Only the town is mentioned, and the main couple is referenced briefly in the previous book too, but that’s actually perfect, because this story feels like a sweet cherry on top, if you've liked this series.

🔵 Best friend's little brother
🟢 Both gay
🟣 Age gap (timelines) 16/18, 18/20, then 28/30
🟡 A decade long pining and situationship
🟢 Short, but good
🌶️ Sex is good, well written; a lot of kissing, touching; frotting, rimming, oral, penetrative; excl t/b

So, Arlo and Reynolds met when Reynolds became best friends with Arlo's brother Matti.

They started hooking up in high school

"He perched awkwardly on the edge of my bed, running the comforter between his fingers, and then, without another word, he leaned over, pressed a quick kiss to my lips, and left. I swear I’ve been his ever since."

and they kind of split apart when Arlo moved away for college, followed by his career of travelling around the world for the next decade.
They met in between, when they were both single and Arlo came back to Sunbury to visit, but the pining and developing feelings from both sides never got addressed between them, so they just continued meeting up, being grateful for stealing those few precious moments.

"For the last ten years, since he left for college, we’ve kept the rules simple. We fuck like maniacs the few times a year we see each other—so long as we’re single—and there’s no contact in between.
We also never, ever mention it to anyone.
His rule, not mine.
Because even though I’ve been falling for him since we were teenagers, I know what this is.
I’m his filthy secret.
His way of slumming it, and no one, especially not his perfect family, can ever find out.
And I want this so badly I can’t even give a shit."

There was an aspect of Arlo's family being rich and of a certain social standing where Reynolds wouldn't be considered an appropriate man for Arlo apparently and I really wanted to know what that's all about. There was literally nothing told about their past and growing up, so we never find out.

They finally do talk about their future and realize they both feel the same way about each other. At Matti's wedding they make the relationship official and that's basically where the story ends.

It’s a good, well written story. While I initially wished these two would get a full-length book, maybe it’s better this way, because this is short, sweet and sexy with a top of emotion that cements this budding relationship.

I think there was a really big potential here of continuing this series but with a different set of characters and then combining them all in this big friend group in Sunbury, but apparently the series is finished.

I remember reading this a few weeks ago, I picked it to kill some time and yeah, I remember Arlo and Reynolds, didn't know it was a part of this series though!

This is a sweet, hot, short novella and I was and still am so sorry Arlo and Reynolds didn't get their full length book.

I felt the chemistry and I felt the love between Arlo and Reynolds, it's not a lot, just an excerpt from their decade long love story, when they finally get together and manifest their relationship, but it's a good one and definitely worth reading.

What you'll get:
Best friend's brother
Wedding shenanigans
Second chance romance
Gay rep

Setting: Canada

This could have easily been a full length book. Arlo's brother's best friend is Reynolds and they've been secretly banging for ten years. But not like, exclusively, and they weren't allowed to talk about feelings. Wild guess how it ended after they reunite for Arlo's brother's wedding.

2.5 rounded up, though to be honest it could've gone either way

this was very short and but I warmed to the characters quickLy.
I think the feeling of wanting more is a good one in these cases,
since the opposite would probably mean I wanted nothing to do with the story.

Such a sweet novella! I didn’t quite feel the same connection to Arlo and Reynolds as most of the others in Sunbury, as they weren’t names I remember coming across in the other novels before, but I still adore them and their relationship! Would have loved for the story to be longer, but it was super cute, sweet and hot even though it was short!

Update: Arlo and Reynolds are mentioned quite a bit in book 4, as they went to the same high school as Cam. I think this novella is set between book 4 and its epilogue, as they’re definitely not together in the main story of book 4.

Reynolds has been in love with his best friend Matti's brother Arlo since they were teenagers. He can't admit it because Arlo loves to travel the world. Every time Arlo is in town the pair meet and sleep together and it hurts when Arlo leaves. When Arlo comes back to town for Matti's wedding he's decided to stick around and see if it can work with Reynolds.

Y'all. Why couldn't THIS have been a full novel in the series?! This was awesome. I loved this. Super sweet despite being so short. Superior to the second and third books in the series IMO. This is the vibe I've longed for in this series.

I had literally zero expectations since we all know I am super picky when it comes to novellas. But this was really cute and it shockingly even had some kind of plot which most of these novellas/prequels lack so extra kudos.

I mean the ending got a bit dragged out and the talk with the brother felt kinda off imo but overall a sweet romance that left you full-on smiling.

This book should be 4.5, not 3.5 because it happens after the #4 timeline.
But it is not that relevant and therefore not confusing... but I am one of those who like to read books in the right order :)

A short story of two idiots that have been friends with benefits for years while both actually want more. Initially I thought the story to be just okay/nice but after a while some humour sparked and I got invested in the feels too. The guys are definitely silly but I'm happy they got together.

I also recently realized that I never actually kept up with/finished Saxon James's "Never Just Friends" series. Again, really, really, really not sure why... Anyway, I read "Just Friends" forever ago, but the next book in line (book three.five) is "Friends With Benefits" (on #BookFunnel).
["Twelve years ago, I slept with my best friend’s little brother, and we’ve been sneaking around ever since.

This book wasn't really hinted at in the rest of the series, not really. I mean, they character's aren't completely off-the-wall, pulled-out-of-thin-air creations; they were mentioned in passing. But they're not in that main friend-group as the couples from the full-length novels.

Still looooooooooved them anyway.

I think this might be one of my favorites in the series. I mean, honestly. The love? The affection? The sexual tension? The history? The mutual pining?! Mutual pining!! D:

**********Contains Spoilers**********

I thoroughly enjoyed this bonus Never Just Friends Series Novella. I just wish it was a bit longer to include a bit of their life together when Arlo moves back to Sunbury and him and Reynolds actually start their life together out in the open. Reynolds and Arlo have been together in secret for about 10 years with only stolen moments when they’re both together as Arlo travels the world and Reynolds is best friends with Arlo’s big brother Matti. I’m not 100% sure why they originally chose to hide things, whether it was an age thing (since they were teenagers when they were first together) or they were worried what Matti and the rest of Arlo’s family would think but they’ve both secretly been in love with each other and want a life together but they’ve assumed the other didn’t as they were worried what they had would stop if they talked about their feelings but they finally grew a pair and talked about what they want when they were both together because they were part of Matti and his high school sweetheart Liv’s wedding. I’d definitely recommend this book, series and author to everyone.

**** Spoilers not many but it’s some**

https://ladiikeiii.wordpress.com/2021...

So this review finna be short because I don’t have much to say. But I will say this. It’s good that Reynolds had his happy ever after because I was curious about who he wanted then to learn that it was Arlo. I was like wait I read the synopsis about a Arlo. So I knew that when I was reading both Rafe and Cam story. I knew I wanted to read Reynolds story when he was hung up on his best friend brother. When Cam was hung up on his best friend.

Glad to know that Arlo brother Matti was find with them being together and didn’t ruin their friendship that would’ve sucked.

This was really cute!!!! I love Saxon James, and I love her stories and her characters and her writing. It's super hard to get invested in stuff that's so short because... it's short lol. But I think this had a decent amount of backstory to get me just interested enough that I cared. There's really nothing more to say other than it's super super cute, and I will continue reading what Saxon puts out!!

At first, I had no idea why this book with these characters was a #3.5 and now, after reading Friendly Fire (#4) I still have no clue. Yes, we get to meet the characters of Friends with Benefits in Friendly Fire, but the timeline doesn't add up at all. So I'm confused af.
Now, as for the book itself. It was a cute, fast and easy no-brainer. I enjoyed reading it and flew right through, I just didn't understand where the characters came from. Those characters were very lovable though and I would have liked to see more of them, maybe even a full-length book after Rafe and Cam got their HEA.

4/5 stars.
