Cobratongue University: Professors and Kings

Rate this book
The world might be shattered around us, but I’m not about to give up hope. It’s time for me, and many other humans, to learn magic.

Elapid City has established a magical college known as “Cobratongue University”, where people like me can draw from our inner power and utilize the magic that humanity has since erased from history. That isn’t the case any longer.

The vampire wars ended just a few months ago, resulting in the death of half the human population. Yes, you heard me right–a number in the billions. To say we’re in a dystopia is an understatement.

I’m among the few lucky humans who neither ended up dead nor livestock for the monsters. My name is Professor Luna Miller, and it’s my job to both learn magic and teach vampires wanting peace more about human literature within this magical college.

Anyone can learn magic. Everyone has the ability to rise to legendary mage status. But it takes dedication, and decades to master the craft. Not to mention, quite a bit of pain along the way.

All this while trying to survive the world’s new rulers that want to purge this established harmony… Oh. And did I mention many other formerly hidden magical creatures are now emerging from the shadows and joining the fray as well?

CONTENT WARNING: Extreme gore, graphic consensual sex (BDSM themes), hints of parental abuse, profanity.

Des M. Astor is a writer in the Urban Fantasy genre. She twists things in a unique way and brings a new flavor to the mythical creatures you know and love. Des has been writing her entire life and decided to refine her craft by going professional.

The series Des is most proud of would have to be the “Kingdoms of Blood” series, where she built an entire Urban Fantasy world and characters around her concepts. Des enjoys dressing up on Halloween as a vampire. Her favorite mythical creature is the vampire, followed by the dragon. Her third favorite creature of myth is the kitsune.

In her works, she tries to tell important lessons through her characters, such as the importance of working together in a romantic relationship and consent. In terms of friendships, she likes telling stories where a group of friends struggle in battle but come through in the end. She has a mixture of strong female and male protagonists. Her stories are character driven.

Des graduated from the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology in May of 2019. She has a deep love for reptiles and seeks to become a herpetologist. Often, she will blend in her knowledge of science to enhance her writing, which brings about sci-fi elements.

Her favorite character archetype is the ‘antihero’, in which the protagonist might make some dark decisions for the protection of the innocent. Her stories tend to lean on the violent and action-heavy side, but they also include romances that build during these conflicts.

Obviously, an overachiever

An impressive book from an artistic and literary standpoint. It's a story that is well written with a good plot. It's not my usual flavor but it kept me engaged nonetheless. Definitely a diamond in the rough. Good job.

I COULD NOT stop reading this novel!!!

First let me start off by saying that I received an ARC of this novel from the author. I started reading Cobratongue University: Profs & Kings yesterday evening and only stopped to take about a 5 hour nap before I got up and finished it this morning - a few minutes ago actually.

If you're into all things fantasy and a diverse cast of characters with not one but TWO love stories weaved around action and gore, then this is the novel for you. You don't want to miss out on this whirlwind story!

Without giving too much away, the author does an absolute phenomenal job of using classic stories like Beauty & the Beast and mythos and entwines them around re-imagined creatures. Vampires, demons, and even the Fae aren't your typical versions in this story. As one character points out:
"Well they're not the sparkly f*cks you're used to like in Twilight." - Darcia

That's no truer statement for the mythical creatures you'll find at Cobratongue University.

Let me just touch upon the plot for a moment, again without giving anything away. I mentioned there are two simultaneous love stories going on in this novel, which I loved because I'm a romance fan of fantasy, contemporary and paranormal, but those love plots aren't the only things that shine in this story. It's the underlying evil that lurks around the University which is a rare place in a world that has been taken over by the Vampire race. Yep, you heard that right. In this novel, humans aren't the dominating species and vampires aren't hiding in the shadows. There are vampires like Goliath, Ares and Jasper (with the help of Prof. Luna) that want to find harmony and peace with humans while other factions of vampires (undead vampires too! what?!), an evil scientist and a hell bent queen wish to continue to wreak havoc on the human race.

There wasn't a moment I wasn't completely engulfed in this book and gripped by the excellent storytelling. I'll be purchasing the paperback once it's available as I need this book on my shelf to pour over it again and again.

You won't be disappointed in checking out this novel and I truly didn't want the story to end. I can't wait for the next book in this saga!

The book is intense, dark but captivating, the world is intriguing and well-described, the characters are deep and interesting. It has some triggers but I did not find them offending or overbearing. Hopefully there are more books to come in this series.
