Have you ever wondered if something was up with your boyfriend? Distant. Moody. Never texts you back. Turns into a wolf at nightfall?

But our deadly pursuers may be the least of my worries.

Because the longer I stay in Faerie with Gavin, the harder it is to remember why I’m so mad. And will I survive long enough to find out?

Okay, this book gets more on my nerves the longer I think about it (not to mention the longer I sit on it, the lower its rating drops), so let’s start off with the things I liked! (Using thumbs up and down emojis as inspired by one of Marquise’s reviews 😉)

👍 Fae based off Irish mythology! This is by far my favorite aspect of the entire book and I’m thrilled this will continue in the rest of the series!
👍 The werewolf aspect—very creative take on this with the whole magical tattoo controlling their shift rather than the moon. I approve.
👍 The twists on Little Red Riding Hood and how the red cloak helps and works. Very cool!
👍 This is a contemporary/portal fantasy and I never thought I’d see that in a fairy tale retelling but the author pulled this off really well.
👍 The start of the book where Audrey’s friend is refusing her more coffee. This made me laugh and have high hopes for the rest of the book.

….yeah, about those high hopes…let’s get into the stuff I didn’t like.

👎 The characters. They were either kind of just there, super evil, or super petty and stupid (I’m looking at you, Audrey). Audrey annoyed me most of all because she didn’t listen to anyone, purposefully walked into situations and places I wanted to shake her over because of her utter stupidity, and basically made herself out to be perfectly right about everything despite said stupidity. Also, she’s got a petty streak a mile wide which got super irritating even if she was justified for part of it. Gavin was kind of just there though he was nicer to hang around then Audrey except for HIS pettiness about something he should have known better then to believe, but I’ll get to that in a minute. Basically I didn’t care for anyone, boo, hiss.
👎 Why the heck did we talk about sex so much?!?! I was not expecting a whole “sex or no sex” talk in a light/cozy, fairy tale retelling fantasy and it really threw me off guard. Though I wouldn’t have minded it if we’d just stopped at Audrey telling Gavin she didn’t want to have sex until she was married—cool, we’ve set up a boundary and had a mature talk about it. Ha! If only, but NOOOO then we have to keep bringing it up and then add in a whole plot device that another guy lied to Gavin about having sex with Audrey and stupid Gavin BELIEVED HIM over his former girlfriend who had told him point blank she wasn’t about to! What?!?! Oh my gosh I was SO ANNOYED by this and it’s the whole reason this book’s rating tanked when I sat on it longer.

So, wow, um, yeah, those are my thoughts on this book and I can’t say I’m eager to try the actual novels just yet. I sure hope they’re not like this one. 👀😒 Would I recommend this book? Eh, no, but everyone’s different so if the things that bothered me don’t bother you then you might really like it. If you ARE bothered by the things I listed though, well, you might just want to pass this one.

Why did I wait so long to pick up this book???

I've seen this series and this author repeatedly recommended, but for some reason I just didn't get around to picking up the books.

Well, the hype is real. This book was ADORABLE.

It is set in modern day our world, which I was NOT expecting. But it quickly moves to the mysterious and fae, and I loved the concept of gates and the faerie world was really cool.

Gavin is adorable and the best wolf-boy ever. He ends up the minion of the evil queen and he's trying his hardest to change that. Enter one high school girl in a mysterious red cloak, and you get an adorable Little Red Riding Hood retelling where the wolf is trying to protect the girl and the girl is trying to save the wolf from the evil queen.

To top it off, this also had a definite Irish/Scottish/Celtic flare to it that was super fun!

3.5/5 ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️✨
Liked more than the first book! Even tho it was a novella, the pacing was perfection and the ending was perfect. Not rushed or inconclusive.
This is my first Little Red Riding Hood retelling and I’m honestly satisfied. Besides a semi-descriptive kiss and the mentón of rippling muscles :s, I like it a LOT!
The MC is 18 year old girl who is a video game, anime, hacking-programming lover and I adored her!
Her personality is so unique and mashed up with the fairytale aspect of it, it was genius.
Content wise like I said , only one semi descriptive kiss, more kissing and that’s it. Oh and she tells her boyfriend she’s waiting to have sex until marriage (there is one respectful convo surrounding that) and he understands.
That’s it folks. :)

If you enjoy stories about fae, then you'll enjoy this quick story. I did think it ended a bit abruptly, but overall it was an entertaining read. I think I'll have to go and read the first book (I read them out of order), I think I'd enjoy a fuller, longer story set in this same world. This is my first time reading anything by Ms. Sandvig, but I'll for sure be keeping an eye our for more books from her.

This book was not for me.

The folklore was interesting but I did not like the FMC. I think if I read this in high school I would have enjoyed it more, but alas I may be getting too old for reading characters who are in high school.

I've been reading Valerie Comer's books for several years and just discovered Hanna's connection and these fun retellings in a list of authors to read if you enjoy fairytale retellings!

These stories are set in a tiny town in British Columbia with gates to Faerie that are only accessible when unlocked. This Red Riding Hood retelling was fun and very light, but a good intro to the world. I enjoyed the humor intermixed throughout a lot.

*This arc was sent to me by the author to give me an honest review in return*

I was really excited to read this book, becuase I love fairy tale retellings and I've read an other book by the author not so long ago, so I knew a little bit about her style. And I wasn't disappointed after this book, Hanna Sandvig is definitely knows what she is doing with original fairy tales.

Our story starts with our main character Audrey is a lovely girl, she has blonde hair with pink dyed ends, and she is a kind of nerd, she is programming and loves videogames. There are some fun references about videogames through the book, it was funny for me, because I understood them, since I play a lot. Audrey's best friend is Neve, she is a talented baker, I would love to taste her amazing cheesecake, because I heard it is mind blowing.

The worldbuilding was breathtaking, I loved the way the author described the mountains, and the forests, it was really vivid and magical. Also the way we get to know the peculiar magical characters, I just needed to read more and more, because I couldn't get enough.

Also, our cute wolf guy is literally the sweetest, if you like bad boys, definitely look into this book. I definitely recommend it, a beautifully written magical delight for your days.

(4.5 stars) - hacking fairyland...

... for love of coffee and a fae in wolf's clothing...

Audrey is a senior in high school. She's young, book smart & snarky but also a touch naive. She was attracted to a new exchange student named Gavin, who seemed to share her interest, but then he abruptly broke up with her. She starts dating his friend Dylan to make him jealous. Not long after that, she finds herself being pursued by wolves in the forest straight into fairyland.

This is the 3rd installment of the Faerie Tale romances series. The stories are mostly independent, but the settings & characters do overlap some, and they share an overarching plot that events are building toward.

The stories are fairly simple but entertaining & exciting enough to hold my interest from beginning to end. I'm very much looking forward to seeing where the author takes it next!

*Romance level: sweet kisses, a little talk about sex, one character lies that another character slept with them, but heroine is waiting for marriage (yes, more people than you think still do that), nothing graphic

That was a short but lovely ride :)

Audrey and Gavin were so cute and their personalities were perfect together! I also adore Neve, as little she appeared in the story-- can't wait to read more about her! The other characters were great as well. Except the not-great ones.

I also enjoyed getting to see more of Hanna Sandvig's Faerie world! It's fascinating how she weaves a world of Irish mythology with the normal modern world, then spins fairytales out of them! I'm looking forward to reading more in the series.

Plus, this story didn't feel rushed at all? It may be just me, but unlike most novellas I've read, this one seems to be the perfect length! I felt like the author did a great job wrapping it all up at the end, yet still leaving room for the next installment. Which I hope will be coming soon!

*I received an ARC of this book inn exchange for an honest review. A positive review was not required; all views and opinions expressed are my own.*

This is my first book by Hanna Sandvig, and I absolutely loved it. The Wolf Gate is the first book in the The Faerie Tale Romances. It is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, and it was so fun to read a book based on this fairy tale because there is not a lot. It’s set mainly in a world called Faerie, and there is a ton of cool stuff about this world on Ms. Sandvig’s website that I would definitely recommend. She’s done a great job of creating a colorful and interesting universe.
The Wolf Gate is about Audrey who gets chased through a portal into the world of Faerie by a wolf who turns out to be her ex-boyfriend, Gavin. Audrey learns that Gavin is fae, and the minion of the Unseelie Queen. But, the pair have bigger problems than their problematic history. Gavin’s alpha is trying to kill them, and Audrey will have to learn whether or not she’s willing to trust Gavin with not only her life but her heart again.
Audrey is hilarious! She has so much spunk, and I loved seeing all of her comments in her head. I mean who wouldn’t be upset if they found out their only hope of survival was their ex boyfriend who they hated or tried too. It was also nice to see the world through her eyes because you were able to get a glimpse of Faerie, and the creatures who live in it. She and Gavin were super cute, and I liked being able to see their backstory. The book does go back and forth from the present to the past when they were dating which I definitely appreciated. I would have liked to see a little bit more detail into why they liked each other, but it was still an adorable love story. They also had someone trying to kill them, so it put a bit of a damper on the whole romance thing.
I think that the storyline progressed well, and I loved all the subtle fairy tale nods that you got to see. I don’t read a lot of novellas, so it felt a bit fast for me, but I do realize that it is a novella. I just wanted more! And luckily for me, Ms. Sandvig has written two more novellas in this series. While it was stand-alone, she was setting up for more books and I cannot wait to read them! Especially the Beauty and the Beast one. I would definitely recommend this book, and I think that it’s suitable for teens. It was clean, but I would advise it to thirteen and up.

4,75/5 estrellas

The Wolf Gate is a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood from Hanna Sandvig's Faerie Tale Romances series. It is a short story, less than 200 pages long, that I really liked.

This book tells us about Audrey, a girl who is in her last year of high school, who when returning home one night is attacked by a wolf, and in turn saved by another wolf who, when taking her through a magical portal, discovers that he is her ex-boyfriend. The story focuses on the escape of Audrey and Gavin through Faerie (the world of fae) and at the same time we learn more about the past relationship between them and the truth behind Gavin and his curse.

Of the three main characters of this series, Audrey is my favorite since she is a bit of a manga/anime geek (which is why I identify with her) and a coffee addict. I love her personality and her way of talking. My only pity is that the book is so short because it leaves you wanting more. If you like retellings, I recommend it.

I received a free eBook for subscribing to the author's Newsletter. I also have a physical copy now.
The Wolf Gate is a Young Adult/New Adult Portal Fantasy/Romance novella, book 0.5 in The Fairy Tale Romance series.

Book Cover: 5* - You can actually see the new and official cover on Amazon and I promise you, it looks amazing. Just like with The Rose Gate, it's beautiful yet simple design still works while still portraying how whimsical the story is going to be. Plus, instead of swirls, those and the roses are replaced with tree branches to help tell you the setting is a little different this time. It's fun, basically is what I'm telling you lol.

Summary/Tagline: 4* - Again, the book is published now, but to see the summary, you have a better chance to see it on Amazon as this one here hasn't been updated yet. The novella's summary was actually funny, in a good way don't worry. It help me set the kind of tone this story was going for, which is fun, whimsical, and pretty action packed compared to The Rose Gate. I've not read enough Second Chance stories, and the ones I have I wasn't overly fond of, but I'm happy I took the chance with this novella. Trust me, if you want to know what you're getting into, read the summary, you won't be disappointed.

Characters: 4* - We follow Audrey, a spunky, anime and gamer girl who loves computers and coding as much as she loves coffee. She was a great character to follow. Audrey is funny and sarcastic, which is kicked up a notch when she's scared, frustrated or confused, but done in a believable manner that it never bugged me. She get's thrown in to an unknown magical land of Faerie where she has to work together with her exboyfriend Gavin to help get her back home while trying to avoid enemy faes such as the seelies, wolf shifters, and the Huntsman. I like Gavin, he may be a . . . pretty typical hunky young man with an accent, he's actually really adorable, level headed, and very caring with a broken heart. The chemistry between these 2 is just hilarious, adorable, and just plain great to read. They weren't grating nor annoying and although there was a misunderstanding about their break up situation, and another one I can't say because of spoilers, they were able to solve it very maturely that made me root for the 2 of them to get together. Now based on what I read when I betad the story, Audrey was placed in a poor sight for awhile, but changes have been made and now I'm 100% behind her character. TWG is a standalone story along with The Rose Gate(this gets a mention near the beginning of TWG) and future stories, but take place in the same lands, so I do suspect to see some characters again in future stories like the Seelie Prince(I forgot his name, sorry), the Huntsman(Forgot his name too), Neve, Dylan, Bronach, and Liadan. I think that's all that were present and I'm pretty sure there was a mention to the author's other novella story The Lily Gate. if you read closely to when Audrey meets the Seelie Prince.

World Building: 5* - I thought the world of Faerie and their magic was explained in wonderful detail. I can tell the author took reference from Celtic mythology, but played around with it to make it fit for this world and make it sound pretty original. Since the beta story, the world definitely sounds more . . . Alive? Hefty? Dammit, I'm still struggling to find the right words, but know that this world is full of life and I'm sure with each installment of the series, there will be some new information to tell, and I can't wait to find out more.

Story: 4* - I thought the story was cute and fluffy with some great action and tension in between the fun. Audrey was in a coffee shop in her own small town in Canada while talking with her friend Neve and waiting for her boyfriend Dylan, but for some reason he suddenly stands her up without a word. Before Audrey leaves for home, Neve's Godmother calls with a cupcake emergency for her book club and Audrey takes the woman some cupcakes for Neve. Afterwards, Audrey gets a red cloak(Did I forget this is a Little Red Riding Hood retelling? Because it is lol) to give to Neve, but on her way home she is ambushed by wolves and gets suddenly pushed through a portal gate to Faerie. From there Audrey has to team up with her ex Gavin to make it home in one peace before one or both ends up imprisoned or killed and with a red cloak that turns out to be magical. Although this is a novella, the story and world is still very informative and engaging and it didn't at all feel rushed. I had fun and I'm sure there will be many readers that will enjoy this story, especially if you want more of a story that's light and not at all heavy with the content.

Over All: 4* - Definitely an enjoyable read that I will recommend anyone who wants a light, fast read that is heavy with the romance. Audrey is a great character to follow, very relatable too, and Gavin is a fun character to have around for Audrey to bounce off of. The world was whimsical and many side characters are fascinating and I think engaging. Although this is the second story the author wrote and not the first, it made me want to read The Rose Gate that much more. I don't know about you guys, but because of all the crazy 2020 is hitting us, I think we deserve a light fluffy read every once in awhile.

The Wolf Gate by Hanna Sandvig
Published by Phouka Publishing
111 pages on the Kindle Version.

One day, Audrey receives a Red Cloak which is meant for her best friend Neve.
When Audrey is walking home , she gets ambushed by a wolf.

Another wolf pushes her aside, followed by them falling through a gate, a portal to be exact.

The Wolf who saved her turns out to be her ex-boyfriend Gavin, who is actually a Fae..  Together they have to find a save way to get back without being ambushed again. The Red Cloak might come in handy..

☕️

'The wolf gate' was free on Amazon. It's a fairytale retelling, and actually a second book in a series. I like the writing style, and I really like the world it is set in. Some characters are based on irish mythology, or so it seems!

The way the cloak works in this story is so cool!
It's a sweet and short novella but not much is happening In my humble opinion.
Reading this is not a waste of time though, it's very enjoyable and the main characters are nice, even if Audrey is quite naive.

This was a fun and fresh retelling of Little Red Riding Hood that made me wish it was a full-length novel. I enjoyed the coffee-drinking, glasses-wearing MC, Audrey, as well as the love interest, Gavin. The story perfectly blended Irish mythology with witty banter, unusual characters, and an imaginative setting. Sanvig’s cover is exquisite, and the character illustrations (on her IG account) are simply delightful. Can’t wait to read The Rose Gate and The Lily Gate and any other fairy tale turned into a faerie tale by this author.

Wow!😍

This was an engaging story that I need to continue reading. So I'm on to the next book in the series! Also I have to say I LOVE Gavin and I certainly didn't think I'd say that since he was " the ex-boyfriend who broke her heart" but you love him by the end and I don't like second chance romances so that's saying something, like this is a really good author.

Content: sweet romance but they do talk about sleeping with someone though it never actually happened, the main character is a virgin so they do talk about her waiting and her not going that far with a boy

I did NOT receive a complimentary copy. I bought this.

I like how this took some of the barebones cues from “Little Red Riding Hood” and made them into its own thing, twisting Grimm fairy tales with Irish folklore and tales of Faerie, complete with portals and magic and shape-shifting and Fae politics. Audrey is our heroine, and she loves her coffee (“Good morning, beautiful”) and her red chucks, even more so when she finds herself whisked away to Faerie and pursued by werewolves and Fae. Gavin, her ex-boyfriend, just so happens to know more than a thing or two about Faerie, and she’ll have to trust him and her own wits to slip through the fingers and claws of those who wish them harm.
Overall, it was a fun, rather light read for me, and while I wouldn’t say it was predictable, there was something soothingly straightforward about it (after the way Sandvig twisted Little Red Riding Hood, Faerie, and together, that is). However, I would say that the flashback sequences to Audrey and Gavin’s history didn’t really add anything to the story – anything truly important was more than adequately portrayed just in their conversations or Audrey’s narration of her reactions to him – and moreover, I found that their past wasn’t nearly as important as where they were, and where they intended to go. Flashbacks should provide more meat, more information to back up what is going on in the present day, and these flashbacks just provided extra details – fluff, really – which cut into the flow of the rest of the story, often at inopportune and tense moments (the example I marked was the opening of Chapter 13, though there had already been several other instances before that).
Going into this I also figured I was in for some solid YA-tropes, and yes, there is first-love-is-true present, but at least the couple involved has to work some things out, first. Their feelings for each other may have true love written all over them, but that doesn’t mean that Audrey will take slights lying down. She’ll stand up for herself and speak her mind, and maybe learn a thing or two along the way. In fact, her independent streak gets her out of more troublesome situations than it gets her into, ultimately. It’d be nice to see if she plays a role in any of the other stories in this series/universe, as it seems maybe to be implied, because there does seem to be something there, between what she learns about herself and about some others around her. All in all, a fun light read with a nice blending of fable and faerie, and a potentially promising start to a larger story for Audrey and Gavin.

I received a free eARC in exchange for an honest review. This has not affected the contents of my review or rating.

I have come to the conclusion that I have a thing for fictional men with wolfish qualities.

The Wolf Gate was a wonderful novella with just enough amount of sass, magic, adventure and romance. Audrey is amazing and fun and often very relatable, especially when it came to her love for sweets. Gavin is…perfect. The moment he was introduced to the page, every item in my mental Book Boyfriend Qualities list (a list I didn’t know existed until this moment) ticked off simultaneously: sweet, respectful, a tad broody but not too much, loyal. It was an explosion of love.

This story, like all others in Hanna Sandvig’s Fairytale Romance series, reads as a standalone. There are a few Easter eggs peppered here and there that readers who’ve read The Rose Gate: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast will enjoy. (I highly recommend you do so because it’s one of my favorite Beauty and the Beast retellings.) But you can enter this book and understand it without having read the first book in the series. Again, it’s a series of standalones set in the same universe.

I really love the author’s style. It has a sassy, fun fairytale vibe that make her stories really enjoyable. When I read her books, I get the same kind of heartwarming feelings that I have when I watch a really sweet movie. They’re the perfect stories to jump to when you’re in between heavy reads and you need to debug that lovers of fantasy and contemporary alike will enjoy.

Sweet, quick read with a bit of romance and a lot of adventure. A slightly (ok, maybe a bit more than slightly) geeky teen girl from a small Canadian town suddenly finds herself in the middle of a lot of excitement and seriously questioning her taste in boys. Inspired by Little Red Riding Hood, this version tosses the original on its head as the girl in the red cloak must find a way to save a wolf from a huntsman. In fractured fairy tale fashion, there might just be pieces of other stories popping up too.

I like the way this story mixed the modern and the magical with traditional lore. The reader is thrown into the mess right along with Audrey. As she figures out what is going on it casts a new light on her past and relationships with other characters.

As with The Rose Gate and The Lily Gate, The Wolf Gate is a standalone in a shared world. There are nods in this book to the previous two, but nothing critical to the plot. I appreciated how the magic system was further exploited in this book as well as some of the political dynamics of Faery.

I read this in two hours. Granted, it only has 17 chapters and an epilogue, but still.

The first thing I noticed was that the writing was better in this book than in The Rose Gate. It seemed better written and less like a debut novel. I loved the dynamic between Audrey and Gavin and the cameos of characters we knew from The Rose Gate (although I was a little confused on whether this takes place before or after TRG). Only thing I didn't like about the book was the ending. I thought that there would be clear resolution to the conflict, but instead we got a half resolution. It's a little open-ended and I hope that it gets completely resolved in a later book. But otherwise I liked this book in the series too! (Also, this book is clean.)

Okay, I’ll admit that I grabbed this book and the next two because of the awesome covers. But I am blown away by how great this story was!! It’s cute, fun and romantic!! I love retellings and this one is great!! The illustrations in the book added so much!! I love retellings with the Fae! I loved Audrey, she is a very relatable character. And Gavin is just so yummy! I loved seeing them grow throughout the book. The world building of Tir na nÓg is awesome, it is loosely based on Irish folklore. I look forward to to the next story in that world, The Rose Gate - a Beauty and The Beast retelling! This is definitely an author I am going to follow!! If retellings are your jam, go grab this book now!!

I read the Beauty and the Beast retelling by this author and really loved it. This month I finally had some budget to get the next book in the series. What I loved about this book is that it can be read as a standalone and yet it's also connected to the other book(s) in the series. You won't miss much if you haven't read the other book yet, but you will meet some familiar faces and stumble upon some nice side-plots if you have. I also really liked the heroine. She was the right amount of afraid, the perfect amount of trust and kind and most of all very relatable. Just like I really liked the hero of this story, mostly because his backstory was insanely well done and made a lot of sense with the rest of his journey. I can't wait to dive into the next book!

This was a quick and enjoyable read. The pacing is spot-on, and I appreciate that Sandvig takes readers back and forth between the fantasy world and Pilot Bay, the "ordinary" one. The witty banter between the characters and the burgeoning romance keep the pages turning. The last few paragraphs make me think that Sandvig has more in store for these characters, and I hope I'm right!

I loved this novella, it kept me interested throughout and I hope that she will answer some of the questions that this novella created as she continues with this series. Gavin and Audrey are adorable and I would love to read more of their story. Great novella, just creates more questions than it answers.

It wasn’t too bad, but it was short enough to be a novella, which of course, I disliked.
It made sense that they dated before, so it wasn’t like insta-love or anything like that.

Romance: CLEAN. No explicit scenes, and I’m not completely sure about the cursing (I’ve forgotten).
