Enchantress. Curse-breaker. Outlawed Queen of Faerie. Fae enemies are gathering on all sides, forced to bend the knee to the newly crowned Alder King. Now, only Aster stands between Faolan’s wrath and the humans he intends to slaughter and enslave. From the fiery depths of the Metal Court to the darkest reaches of the sinister Shadow Court, Aster and Thorne must travel the length of Faerie to seek possible allies and hunt down the objects of power they desperately need to challenge Faolan’s rule. But when Aster discovers the unexpected truth of her magic, her world, and her relationship with Thorne, she realizes that saving her people will mean changing the fabric of Faerie forever… Can Aster claim her place as the first mortal Queen of Faerie? Or will the price of freedom mean sacrificing everything she loves? A Promise of Thorns is the third book in a new series of interconnected fairy tale retellings that feature strong heroines, swoon-worthy heroes, clean romance, and magical happy ever afters. Aster’s story begins with book 1, An Enchantment of Thorns, and concludes in this book.
A fast-paced read compared to the other two books in this series! Perhaps a little too fast. I felt like I didn’t really have a chance to get to know the side characters…There’s a lot of coming and going as Aster and Thorne travel more across Faerie. I thought it was cool to finally get glimpses of the other courts. But the pacing had it out for me. It was a little too slow in some parts and too fast-paced in others.
This was also a very YA-story, and a unique take on mating bonds. And I appreciate the originality. Unfortunately it just didn’t feel the same for me in terms of feeling satisfied when a certain bond was finally forged. If you get my gist…
Overall, because it has fae and BATB elements I still loved the series despite the few issues I have with this final installment in the series.
A Promise of Thorns was a stunning conclusion to this series! My eyes could hardly move fast enough to absorb the twists and turns, curveballs and fastballs that were prevalent in book 3. I'm thrilled with the conclusion, and everything leading up to it was beautifully rendered. I won't lie, I'm totally hoping for some elaboration (like his own series please, no biggie 😉) from a certain shadowy prince from a less than happy court that appears to have a long and fascinating history that was touched on here in Promises. Without the spoilery thing, Lonan intruiges me enough with his choices made that I feel like there's a story there.
I loved the main characters; Aster and Thorne (although Aster did somewhat annoy me with her naivete). I loved the side characters: Vanna and Morven, the latter of whom I surprisingly liked. I also loved the antagonists from Faolan to Lonan and his three brothers. Overall, the characters were well-written, although I wished I got to know more about side characters.
The Worldbuilding
FINALLY we get to see the main characters in other courts with the exception of the River, Desert, and Frost Courts (if my memory serves correctly). I also found it interesting to see how the Fae Courts' treatment of the Tithe humans differ from one another.
My only gripe with the worldbuilding is the inconsistency of the Craft. I thought the Fae couldn't craft. I am not talking about Thorne's bond with Aster that allows him to Craft. I see Mosswhistle making porridge (this would count as cooking, which is form of Craft) and in the second book, Thorne, who was not bonded to Aster at the time, made a pulley system of sorts in the First Alder Trial on the cliffs.
The Plot
The plot is fast-paced. The one thing that somewhat confuses me about the plot is why none of the Fae (on Faolan's side) towards the climax of the book didn't stop Aster from taking the crown when she cursed Faolan. They are well-aware she intends to take the Alder Crown and none of the Fae want a human queen, why they didn't try to stop her from taking the crown is beyond me, I guess it could be due to shock of seeing Aster curse Faolan?
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this series. Though, I really hope we get a book that shows how Aster and Thorne rules as well as how her laws affect the Fae and humans across the realm. I would especially love to see the ramfications of her laws as I highly doubt humans would ever want to willingly work for the Frost and Shadow Courts as they're both portrayed to be the two most anti-human courts with their treatment of humans being one of the worst. Or if humans did work for them, I suspect it would be a VERY select few.
This was a great conclusion to Aster and Thorne's story. I feel really satisfied with their ending and how perfect it was.
But I feel overall incomplete with it because of the open-endings for some of the other characters. I know this was done on purpose for further exploration, so please release their stories now!
Okay, I decided to write this review as I read lol, these are the most fun, well at least for me lol.
One thing that made me laugh hard was (without any spoilers) "running gracefully" I know the Fae are supposed to be graceful but it was just hilarious imagining them running gracefully lol.
The best side character award goes to Mosswhistle
What is you doing to my fave sidekick? I am on chapter 22, not cool, that's just dirty.
Thorn taking off Aster's boots aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa *squealing*
Okay, I thought I would finish it in one go but didn't happen. So stay tuned for part 2. Peace out
Y'all it was obvious they were mates, but there is one thing that bothers me, and it's the fact that she is now mad at him because he didn't tell her. I mean girl chill, he for sure had some good reasons. Well now she is behaving like a brat, asking him to leave her alone. Bitch, you have bigger things to do and don't forget you lied to him first, this again doesn't mean shit but she could empathize a bit.
We were robbed off a bed scene lol *crying in the corner* I am half joking, I know it is YA lol.
Yo I would be so happy if someone could just slap Ava.
Morven, from being a brute become a hero. You go boi.
End of chapter 46 made me shooked
Chapter 47 - such a power move.
man I really want someone to love me as Thorn loves Aster.
Okay I am done now, I finished the book
It was sweet, gentle and it was brutal, shocking. Throughout the books, there were many emotions that went through my mind. It was beautifully written, the pace was amazing. It made me really want to just teleport there and just experience all that smells and views. Also to feel loved as much as Aster or Thorn were. Homies all I am going to say if you love Beauty and Beast retellings as much as I do, just go grab a copy, you won't be disappointed.
Lol forgot to add that I have received an eArc of this book and I am leaving the review voluntarily. Peace out homies.
This is the final book in the trilogy and what a book it is! Aster and Thorn have escaped from the Sky Court and are at the Forest Court recovering from the Alder Trials and trying to find how they can take back the crown that Faolan has stolen from Aster after she rightfully won the trial and rightfully claimed the title Queen of Faerie. She hears something which they need to confirm if it’s true or not and along with her friends they seek out two other parts of the crown to complete it. After they obtain them Faolan gets them as well but they still have a chance to get the crown but Faolan as usual is right there to try and dash their hopes once again leading up to the climax of the story!
This is a great series and you’re going to meet some people good and bad which you’ll easily love or hate! It’s a tale of perseverance and rising up to meet the challenges one faces even though they may seem hopeless! You need to have some kleenex on hand throughout these three stories because believe me you’ll need it!
This is a page turner so I hope you’ll be sure to have the other two books read first before starting on this one! Not to worry though, you’ll be so caught up in this well written saga that you’ll find the time just flies! Be prepared to burn some midnight oil because you just won’t want to put the books down!
This fantasy has it all romance, betrayal, friendship, loyalty, sacrifice, adventure, excitement, suspense, and pages just flying by because you’re so hooked on the story you just have to keep reading to see what happens next!
I recommend this series to everyone who loves all those things I just mentioned! I can guarantee that you’ll be so happy you read this trilogy that you’ll tell your family and friends that they must read it as well!
Kudos to these two authors who have woven a story that will remain with you long after you’ve finished it but with the knowledge that you can once again fall under its spell by just clicking on the covers and being swept back to when it all began!
Elm and Helena have done a spectacular job wrapping up Aster's story. A Promise of Thorns is the third and final book in the A Court of Fairytales series and it was everything I could have wanted. A quest to find three ancient artifacts of faerie, fae history that was once lost has been uncovered and has changed everything. This story has daring adventures, near escapes, bloody battles, magic, merfolk, chariot races, dragons, and so much more.
Aster has really changed a lot over this series. She was always strong, confident, and determined but she only saw things in black and white, fae and human, but Aster has realized that everyone needs help and the fae aren't evil as a whole. Look at loyal Mosswhistle, courageous Vanna, even Morven (who makes an appearance) isn't as bad as originally thought. Aster is determined to bring change to everyone and she's gonna do it with Thorne by her side. The pair may have had so rocky moments but Thorne and Aster are a strong pair who only get closer throughout this story. It's clear they love each other with their whole hearts and Thorne is even willing to go along with Aster's crazy plans. They're great together.
This book took us to different courts. Seeing how other courts work, how their magic differs, how they treat humans was all very interesting. The differences between courts were very obvious and while some courts were exact Elm and ly what I thought they would be while others surprised me.
A Promise of Thorns was the perfect conclusion to an epic tale. I loved the vivid descriptions, the daring characters, the romance, the fae history, and the unique magic in this series. Not to mention an exciting storyline that kept my eyes glued to the page. It's impossible not to love this book. It looks like things were kinda set up for a couple of spin-off books so I'm wondering if Helena and Elm will be returning to that world. Even if they don't I will still be on the lookout for the next thing either of them writes.
Aster had won the Alder Trials, thus she was as of then the queen of the faerie kingdom but having a human as their queen was a first, and for many of the courts totally unacceptable. Also when Aster and Thorne escaped the sky court, Faolan kept the alder bone crown for himself and was trying to gather allies to his cause. Aster and Thorne start to travel through the numerous courts in order to gather allies who will vow allegiance to their queen, and when they visit the dragon they are told that apart from the crown there are two other items known as the Alder Regalia which they should look for, a glass orb of far seeing and a gold sceptre. However wherever they went Faolan was just a step behind them, and he had allies from the shadow court who were very dangerous to both Aster and Thorne. This final book in the beauty and the beast re-telling is so full of magic and creatures of the faerie realm I found myself totally captivated by the tale of Petal and her beast, aka Aster and Thorne who turned out to be no beast at all. I loved the character of Mosswhistle whose loyalty to Aster is amazing and I really enjoyed the world building that went into the numerous courts and its denizens, but most particularly I enjoyed the lore about aster's herbal powers as a greenwitch especially those she used to create her earth crown. Becoming Queen of the Kingdom of Faeries with all it's courts and political intrigues was difficult, and being it's first human queen was almost impossible, but not if one is Aster Wilden. She who vowed to be the Queen of faerie and human alike, ruling fairly with Thorne by her side as her mate. This book gives us the magical and fairy tale ending we deserved.
I received an ARC of this book, and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was an immensely satisfying conclusion to the series.
By the time I reached the last page, I had a smile on my face and a warm, fuzzy feeling. This series was a delight from start to finish. It was somewhat bittersweet to know I had reached the end of Aster and Thorne's journey, but I could not have imagined a better ending to the series.
The first book in this trilogy was based on Beauty and the Beast, and the second had to do with a deadly competition. This last book had a lot to do with the history of the fae and politics, as well as the relationship between Aster and Thorne. I initially worried I wouldn't enjoy this book as much as the other two, considering how action-packed the first two books were. However, this one was not disappointing in the slightest! It still had plenty of action, a healthy dose of romance, and several interesting twists.
Despite being in the middle of a reading slump, I tore through this book! I finished it around 2 in the morning because I couldn't put it down! This book had a lot of wholesome, sweet moments and then it would shift into high-stakes, intense scenes, so I was glued to the pages!
I would definitely recommend this to fans of Beauty and the Beast re-tellings and fae romances! This series has been a comfort series for me, so I could easily see myself re-reading it in the future. In the meantime, I will definitely be reading more books by Helena and Elm! (I'm currently in the middle of one of Helena's series, and I'm loving it as well!)
Content: fade to black scene, some minor language, some violence
This book does a fantastic job of wrapping up Aster's story. A Promise of Thorns is the third and final book in the A Court of Fairytales series and it was everything I could have wished for! Aster is now a claimant to the Alder Crown and she needs to sway the other courts to accept her claim before she can challenge Faolan. She soon learns of some ancient artifacts that can help her and soon goes on a quest to find them. She traipses to several different courts in this story and some familiar characters make appearances throughout- some to help others to hinder. Soon it comes to light that some fae history has been lost through the ages and is slowly being uncovered which will change everything.
Aster has really grown throughout this series. She was always strong, confident, and determined but she only saw things in black and white, fae and human. She now has realized that everyone needs help and things aren't always black and white. Aster is determined to bring change to everyone and she's gonna do it with Thorne by her side. Mosswhistlt does make another appearance in this book and is still super endearing and will steal your heart. Thorne has also grown and changed throughout this series. He isn't the beast we all met him as, and he also isn't the pompous royal fae that he is expected to be. This duo really has grown together and blended into one another so well- It really is enjoyable to read about them.
A Promise of Thorns was the perfect conclusion to an epic tale. The descriptions are so clear that you can see things happening as you read, and the world-building is astounding, Each court has its own theme and the authors really do nail the details in these books! I found it impossible to not love this series. It really does have everything in it!
POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR THE PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH All around, faes are bending the knee to the false Alder King, Faolan. Aster, rightful Queen of Faerie, does not plan on giving up and wants to protect the humans from his tyrannic rule. With Thorne, she travels between the Courts that accept her in search of help and allies to hunt down objects of power that could challenge Faolan's claim to the throne. But Aster will learn new things about her magic, her history and her relationship with Thorne that will change everything.
I loved the first two books of this series, but this finale was really something else. The plot thickened, holding new depths and intrigues that completely swept me off my feet. I loved how everything was a mess to the point that neither the characters nor us readers knew where to look. Danger was everywhere and I was just waiting for the next obstacle to drop in Aster's path with baited breath. It was completely enthralling and surprising. I also really enjoyed how the world that I thought I had seen everything of revealed new, fascinating secrets and we got to discover even more about it and its history, the magic and the courts. It was truly amazing and only made the series more thrilling. The political plot was really interesting too, Aster having to figure out which of the courts would be her allies or enemies. The romance was still there, strong, but not too present as to overshadow the main intrigue, which was amazing. I loved seeing the secondary characters again and how they came into the story. The writing is still addictive as ever and I'm truly sad to have finished this amazing, magical trilogy. I look forward to reading more from these authors.
I highly recommend this series to fantasy fans! It's a gem!
"You'll do well to remember there are worse things than death."
(Note: I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This is my abridged review.)
It’s time for a quest!
After a somewhat slower start, A Promise of Thorns becomes an action-packed battle of wits between narrator Aster and rival for the crown Faolan. Faolan may not know all the tricks Aster has up her sleeve (she's an enchantress, after all), but nearly every advantage is his. It's a good thing Aster has a few marvelous friends on her side.
The supporting characters in A Promise of Thorns offer a lot of nuance and fun--and so do the delightful villains. It was hard to find a natural spot for a bookmark. As a fantasy reader, there are few things worse than having to stop for dinner when the MC is about to meet a dragon.
Most of the breathing space in the story is offered by the romance between Aster and Thorne. I had a barely contained squeal or two and a generous helping of mentally shouting at them to just TALK to each other (for Pete's sake!), which is the highest compliment I can give to a romantic storyline. I was also glad that Aster's familial love (and her love for her perfect friend Mosswhistle) were included in the story. They're so often Aster's greatest vulnerability AND motivation, and add tension throughout the series. The payoff is spectacular.
It's bittersweet to say goodbye to these characters, but what a fabulous send-off.
I went through these books so fast! Sadly, this final instalment didn't live up to my expectations. It was still good, mind you... however, I think once the
I am leaving this series with an open mind and an open heart. I would very much like to read more about the other characters. Vanna needs her own book! I loved her with the Mountain Prince. I also have an inkling that Ava and that Shadow Court Prince could be . This was a fun and exciting fairy tale. One I am sure to miss. 4.5 stars.
This was a fast-paced, action-packed, and incredibly enjoyable read. What a great way to end the series! Thorne and Aster are in a mission to prove she is the rightful queen of fae. They know this is true, but will it be easy to convince the rest of the fae to believe it? We get some absolutely adorable moments with Thorne and Aster this book, and some great moments with some side characters too. I absolutely fell in love with Vanna. She’s always been an enjoyable character throughout this whole series, and I think she’s definitely one of my favourites. Although, Mosswhistle stole the show. They are most definitely my favourite character in this whole entire series. I’m sad to see this series has finally come to an end, and what an epic adventure it has been. Thorne and Aster are definitely high on my list of favourite couples, and it was such a joy to see their relationship bloom and blossom! I’m excited to see what these ladies do next!
Thank you to Elm and Helena for allowing me to read as an ARC. This is my honest review.
A great retelling comes to an end with twists and turns you never expected.
For a human and enchantress to show her worth to fae kind that she is queen she must travel to the courts surrounding her and stake her claim. Finding allies is harder then anticipated, the fae set in their ways of humans being lesser.
The author told a great story and ways that the humans and fae could live together which always seemed tough in stories to change something that’s been years in the making.
It is all up to aster, Thorne and all her friends to find the missing pieces of the Adler rulers to show she is truly queen. Her and Thorne had to go through so many obstacles in the first two and this book to love each other fully and the truth he had hidden showed how much humans and one who loved so deeply needed to heal after such news.
The ending was amazing with the powers she created and how Faolon fought and what his punishment is just I think.
Such a great read and a retelling I will always enjoy.
A fast-paced read compared to the other two books in this series! Perhaps a little too fast. I felt like the last book took a little while to get in to. I think it's because we didn't really have a chance to get to know the side characters.
I also found there was a lot of coming and going as Aster and Thorne travel more across Faerie. Don't get me wrong, I loved see more about the other courts but I feel like it slowed down the pacing. At least for me.
I often found some parts of the book were too slow and too fast-paced in others. Just my opinion.
This was also a very YA-story, and a unique take on mating bonds. I appreciate the originality. However, because it's YA in terms of 'feeling satisfied' when a certain bond was finally forged. If you get my gist…
Overall, because it has fae and BATB elements I still loved the series despite the few issues I have with this final installment in the series. I would totally read and recommend this series.
So many twists and turns and so much self-discovery and mysteries are revealed in Book 3 'A Promise of Thorns'. I'd have given it 4.5 stars if I could but one chapter towards the middle lagged a bit and seemed just a bit rough, but the continuation picked up and I was thoroughly delighted by the finish. The description of the other fae courts was fun and this hate to love romance comes to a beautiful finish. The battle with Faolan and the Sky Court is the icing on the cake, never in a million years would I have come up with that ending, it is so perfect. If you like feisty heroine's, Fae courts with all the regalia and intrigue, a Happy Ever After, and hard-earned justice, you will love, love, love 'A Promise of Thorns: (A Court of Fairey Tales Book 3) by Helena Rookwood and Elm Vince.
A rather perfect ending to Aster's trilogy! I enjoyed every twist of the plot, loved getting to know old and new characters, and was so contented by the ending!
The storyline was fast-paced, with lots of travelling and adventure. I appreciated getting to know more about the world of Faerie and seeing some more of the other Courts. The worldbuilding was incredibly fleshed-out in this installment, from the setting to the history of Faerie! I loved seeing all of the pieces come together from little hints the authors had sewn into the plot of the previous books, too!
Aster continued to grow into her new role. I did find her a little hypocritical at times, realizing that she needs to think of the good of the whole kingdom, but choosing to focus on the needs of her friends and close circle. I would have liked to see a deeper look into Aster's growth here, and how she plans to be a good ruler.
Thorne had an interesting role in this book, as much of it was spent being suspicious about his odd behaviour. I just wanted him to talk to Aster, so I spent a lot of the book a little irritated with him, haha. BUT, once everything was smoothed out between them, I really enjoyed getting to see Thorne support Aster and love and care for her!
Mosswhistle, as always, was the true star of the show, and I definitely got teary-eyed at a certain happy scene near the end.
Overall, I thoroughly loved reading Aster's trilogy in the A Court of Fairy Tales series! The ending left me so happy, but also curious about where the series will continue (I want to see Aster & Thorne rule, even from another character's view!). I have my suspicions about who the next book will focus one (maybe a certain sister...) and cannot wait to see what Helena & Elm write next!! I am a solid fan, and you will be too if you love folklore, faeries, sweet romance, magic, and action!
***Romance notes: innuendo jokes, mild kisses, and fade-to-black intimate scenes.
After the ending of the last book I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I had a feeling I'd love it... and I was right. I was so excited about the re-emergence of Mosswhistle who is one of my favourite characters. And the romance was just so cute. It had the feel of Quests and adventure that the other books had which I was glad to see again and the character development in this one really made me connect to the story. The ending was so satisfying where it tied up loose ends and kept the general feeling of hope for the characters future and I enjoyed the HEA. Overall it was just a really cute and easy read.
I just adore this Beauty and the beast retelling! Book one got me hooked, book two held me captive and this third and final book was it’s epic conclusion and it is oh so so good! It’s gripping and fast paced, it’s exciting and entertaining and with the twists and turns thrown our way it had me on the edge of my seat! I have very much enjoyed Aster and Thorne‘s journey and the authors have done an incredible job with the ending and it’s been one hell of an adventure full of danger, romance, battles and is so much more then just another fairytale.
Omg!! This series should get 10 stars....or more!!!
Truly inspirational beauty and the beast retelling and so much more, it is about fae also. Beautifully written. It grabed hold of my heart for the heroine and hero as well as all the suffering humans and fae. A befitting turn of events for the main villain. Clean read but slow burn romance that gets a little heated. So intense!!!!
I loved reading this final book for this Beauty and the Beast retelling. Aster and Thorne had a lot of hurdles, many of which had me biting my nails. I’m happy with both their journey and the conclusion of this story. I look forward to reading more by these authors and I hope that they write new stories based on some of the side characters in here.
I really enjoyed this series. This final book in the series was fast paced and tied up all the loose ends nicely. The author did a great job of taking a traditional fairy tale and adding a whole new world and deeper storyline to it. I recommend this series for anyone who loves fairytale retellings with a twist of fae and action.
I enjoyed A Promise of Thorns. Although I liked the first two better, this was a great conclusion to the series and everything was answered before the conclusion of the storyline. If you haven't read the first two books in the series, you will want to read this prior to reading this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When I read you and Elm's books I have to read the whole series before I give a review!
As usual, you Ladies brought the bang. I had to read all of the books to get my fix! I will not be giving away any hints, you are just going to have to read them yourselves. You always leave me wanting more. Still waiting on Tabitha!!😁
It was a satisfying conclusion even if in my opinion the bad guy is too much for me too feel any kind of feelings (apart from dislike) about him and I like more complex villain. And sure one of the thing that happens is a bit obvious and bring more drama than necessary but overall it was a fun series and I enjoyed it and I liked the ending
This was a fabulous ending to a rollercoaster ride of a fairytale. The twists and turns from the first two books just keep coming in this book. If you are looking for an in-depth and completely unexpected retelling of Beauty and the Beast, this is the series for you!
Absolutely wow wow wow. I loved this story so much. I absolutely love Mosswhistle, he is absolutely beautiful. Loved all the characters and how they were portrayed in the story. Well done on a fantastic story
