Alright. This book.

There is so much good in this book. The author can write beautifully and has some amazing ideas.

It’s just that something somewhere doesn’t add up very well.

The two main characters are semi-interesting. The female MC much more so. The part that bothers me is that if this was just a romance with no other genre trying to work along side it, maybe it would be okay…maybe.

Darcie is a woman who has had hell handed to her multiple times. She’s very insecure and cautious. Which is fine.

But the male MC just happens to be the thing that fixes her.

And that leaves a bitter taste.

If the supernatural bit had been expanded more and felt more important and necessary, I think this could be a five star book.

The romance is cute but way too…mmm, easy? Everything always works out with only a few paragraphs of strife. That got under my skin really quickly.

I can see where Insta-love can be alluring and I give the trope it’s due. But here it’s like the cure-all.

What about therapy? What about spending time working things out without jumping from one big life situation to the next?

I’m not sure exactly what the time frame for this whole story is, meaning how long Darcie was in Ireland and taking in the local scene, but it really felt like a week.

She doesn’t really even set up her room at the hotel before mister hero comes and solves all her problems.

There’s just took much ‘I love you’ ‘I love you too’ throughout the whole book.

For a woman who has been assaulted, lost both parents, been in a damn CONVENT for ten years, I think things would have gone much slower. It’s like she doesn’t process anything, just accepts it and moves on.

Maybe living in a convent for ten years gets you real ready to accept things as they come, I don’t know.

The first few chapters are a lot more well written/edited. They’re a little mysterious while giving background. But then it’s just over. I think it could have had a bit more and extended our knowledge on who were were meeting and what they were dealing with. At least with the female MC.

Now my biggest issue other than the immediate man heals all wounds thing is that anything involving any suspense or anything even remotely close to that- are choppy and feel like they were added in later.

There’s a big disconnect between the ghostly images, the real sexual assaults she’s experiencing/has experienced and what’s going on. Like they were two separate stories that got mashed together by mistake.

And also, I hate that she finds she pregnant at the end. It had been mentioned randomly before that she couldn’t have kids and then finally at the end. I just really dislike when that’s the deemed happy ever after.

Like the female MC is 40, which I’m all for and if she had talked more about wanting kids- im all for that too, but it was mentioned twice. That she couldn’t and now she was. Like, why was this important?

Let the lady just have an amazing time in Ireland after all the horror she went though and mysteries that were (quickly) solved. She didn’t need a baby. Ladies are complete without men and kids.

I know this might sounds like a harsh review, but really I see so much potential here, I just wish it was tightened up and some quick, kinda tacky, things weren’t used just because they’re popular/what’s always been done.

This author can write a book. They can write absolutely beautiful stories. Give this a go if it sounds like something that would work for you.

Spoiler- Free Review:

The Escape had me feeling lots of different things. I will start with the positive points first. The imagery that the author uses to describe Ireland makes me want to jump on a plane and escape there much like our MC did. I could literally visualize the places she was describing with no difficulty. I also liked that the MCs were older. The male MC was 37 and the female 40. It was refreshing to get an older adult POV as opposed to early 20s. Now for the things I didn’t like. This was a romantic story of a troubled woman with lots of skeletons in her closet who needs to make peace with them. Those skeletons created so many plot holes. There were events that happened in the story that never got addressed again or explained. Maybe they will since this is a trilogy, I’m not sure. It ended with one of my least favorite tropes of all time. So many questions unanswered. I felt like some “twists” weren’t necessary for the plot. I started with a positive outlook on the book and I enjoyed it until the last like 100 pages. Will book 2 be better? Maybe. Will I read it? Also maybe if for no other reason than to see if I get answers to my hundreds of questions. This is an adult book not sure what genre it would fall in honestly… romance? 18+ for themes and sexual content, but it’s not graphic or explicit.

Starts off as love at first sight and all about fate and instant attraction. Then descends into ghosts, rape, and nuns, Including a bizarre jealous attack!

Just a bit too random for me to get full enjoyment but still enjoyed the overall story and finished it in a day!

The first chapter is very well written and hooked me to the story, but from there on it was not as brilliant. I loved the promise of the story but it doesnt really develop as well as I had hoped. I know it is a romance but one or two sex scenes would have sufficed, I felt that they got in the way of the story telling instead of adding to it. The best parts of the story were in setting the scene both in the beginning and at the chapel, the author is very good at creating mood and atmosphere with her descriptions, I would have liked more information about the couple who created the chapel, but also needed more about the villain to build the story and more about Darci's thoughts and emotions in order to understand her better. You do not really have a chance to feel close to the lead character and the leading man is a bit of a cardboard cutout hero who lacks a bit of depth, the main premise seems to be you are the woman of my dreams and I guess I would be a little suspicious of anybody who says something like that and having Darci's thoughts about that kind of thing would really have helped move the story along rather than focusing on empty sex scenes. Darcie Hartwell is desperate to start over. She yearns for a peaceful life free from the memories that haunt her nightmares. She’s drawn to Ireland and it seems fate has a plan for her.

Hard working Irishman Connor O’Brian is not looking for romance. After being hurt in the past he does not want another woman in his life. Yet for years he has dreamt of one particular woman. He doesn’t know her name, her voice or if she even exists. But he knows her heart and would do anything for her. Then whilst at work in a hotel an American guest literally falls into his arms. He can’t believe it - the woman from his dreams.

Darcie and Connor are immediately drawn to each other, effortlessly falling in love. But Darcie needs to overcome her past she’s been hiding for years before she can find peace and happiness.

The way the author has described Ireland, I truly felt like I had escaped to the breathtaking land too. I could picture all the beautiful places Darcie and Connor visit together. I thought this was a wonderful insta-love story. The few plot twists and hints towards Darcie’s past kept the story interesting whilst the sweet romance between the two made for a relaxing weekend read.

This book was a whirlwind journey, slightly cheesy in some parts, but when it comes to romance, I’m all about the cheese.

There were a few silly criticisms I would add, only from the perspective of being a person from Ireland, which I am, the American terms such as parking lot and side walk and so on grated on me, I know that’s petty, but Connor would have called it a car park and for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way.

Overall I enjoyed this book, I didn’t understand the last bit of the epilogue, if anyone can enlighten me, please do.

All in all a good read :)

Recommend for people who like the stereotypical hallmark movie. Lots of cliques but a fast read. I didn't care for the frequent POV changes because I wasn't able to connect with the characters. It changed to often so the character were kept at a distance. I appreciated the scenery description. I was most excited about them.

It should come with a 18+ warning, I was not prepared. The story feels underdeveloped moves too quickly. Also, there's not a definite separation between POVs which makes it confusing at times.

💻📖🎧 Book format & quality 💻📖🎧
The book is excellent quality for a paperback with quality thick pages and a nicely tactile cover.

🌻SpLD comments (from a dyslexic)🌻
The format of this book, in terms of font size and spacing makes it quite appealing to my dyslexic brain. The font is easy to read and the contrast of font on the paper colour worked really well.

🎨 Artwork
I love a good landscape picture and the authors choice to depict the Irish coastline is excellent.
The graduated colours on the wording of "Escape" compliment the colours of the book.

✒️ Style
This heartwarming book really captivated the mind. This is not a genre I would normally go for but the author makes it a fun read and easily to follow.

👪 Characters
Darcie Hartwell is the lead female character, she travels to Ireland on a journey of self discovery.
Connor O’Brian is the lead male character and helps Darcie see what's beautiful person she is.

📈 Plot
This is a story of two soul mates meeting, Darcie "Escapes" to Ireland from her past trauma and meets Connor. The story takes you through ups and downs of laughter and sadness and the characters are easily relatable. Things get a little steamy towards the end #nospoliers.

🤓 Author Synopsis 🤓
Escape to breathtaking Ireland in a story of passion, mystery, and suspense.

She dreams of breaking free.

Desperate to start over, Darcie Hartwell is drawn to Ireland, unwittingly compelled by the mystical power of fate and the ghost of an ancestor. She’s not looking for adventure, love, or friendship. She only yearns for a peaceful life, free from the memories that plague her nightmares.

He dreams of her.

Connor O’Brian is a hard-working Irishman who wants nothing to do with women or romance—burnt once, twice shy. Except for the one he sees in his dreams. For years, he has dreamt of only her. Nameless, voiceless, he doesn’t know if she’s real. But he knows that if he ever finds her, he will stop at nothing to keep her.

But fate has its own plans.

Falling into the waiting arms of the handsome Irishman was never Darcie’s intention, but in that one moment, everything changed. Now, Darcie must decide if she is willing to confront the past that haunts her and face who she is to fight for the love she never knew awaited her.

🖋️ Author Bio 🖋️
I was a wife and writer at home when the Coronavirus hit. My husband was suddenly working from home, and I couldn’t get a minute’s peace while I wrote. I was going crazy and contemplated homicide. So I took a job as a contact tracer. The work took me away from Darcie and Connor, but at least it kept me out of prison. The job led me to write Have You Got A Kitchen Table? The Musings and Melancholy of a COVID-19 Contact Tracer. If you need a laugh pick up the audiobook!

Darcie’s story, Escape, was always playing on a constant loop in my head. Every day all day. I could hear her fear and Connor’s worry. And my personal favorite is Nan’s sarcasm. I can’t wait to finish her book, United. But Sondra, a loveable firecracker, and Simon, a lady killer who loves to not be in love, have impatiently waited their turn. Break Free is coming soon!

I am of Irish descent and hold a deep-rooted affinity to Ireland. So it was only natural that it be the setting of my first trilogy. Ireland has tattooed itself on my soul. It’s my second home. I can’t be there as much as I would like. This way, I can be there as often as I wish and bring my readers along for the ride.

I write the stories that come to me as best I can so others hear the characters, feel their emotions, and see their lives the way I do. In short, I let it rip and love every moment of it! I hope you do too.

I really enjoyed this book...to an extent. The story was good, but the description of the locations in Ireland, the lush country side, the cliffs, the flowers and gardens, the smells, she described it in such detail, that it makes me want to go and visit these places myself and enjoy the beauty of them. I was hoping for the same with the main characters. You get vague idea of who they are before Darcie travels to Ireland, and of Connor. But I feel like the story is missing some key things, like who was her attacker at the funeral? Was it someone she knew? That part of the story should have had more information for us to get to know the MC more. I have so many questions regarding a lot of the small glimpses of the story. Like did she give him the painting of the pagan chapel? Or did she tell him that she looked like her? Or that maybe she was a descendant of Anne Malloy? And so many more questions.

The way the author wrote made me loose track of who was speaking at times as well as what was going on and to whom? It took me a bit to get use to that type of story telling. But once I figured it out it made it easier. Since this is a trilogy I'm hoping that in the rest of the story we get to know the MCs better. And get more info on the hundreds of questions I have.
I do want to know more of the story. I just hope this becomes a little spicier🌶️🌶️🌶️. For a romance it was pretty tame in the description, very PG in my opinion.

I've never wanted to visit Ireland more, after reading this book, I have fell in love with all the wonders this beautiful place has to offer.

Imagine living through life feeling empty and hollow, nothing you do feels right and you need to find your way again. Darcie Hartwell leaves everything behind to move to Ireland and start a new life. She goes without any expectations, Darcie just wants to live the adventure of a lifetime. As she arrives at the hotel, she stumbles upon the very handsome and talented Conner O'Brian. They both seem to have an instant connection with each other and he immediately asks her out to dinner.

As they get to know each other, it is evident that fate and Ireland itself has very magical plans for these two to be together. After a night of romance and passion they become inseparable. It seems Darcie and Connor are soulmates from long, long ago and they just found each other. Unfortunately, Darcie seems to have a secret she is keeping that she does not dare reveal to Connor and after an unfortunate sequence of events, everything will come full circle. This book was so magical, the author did such an incredible job at describing how magical and feral Ireland is. Escape is a story of redemption, fate, second chances and true love. I absolutely fell in love with Darcie and Connor's relationship, it was intense, sensitive and at times so full of need and wanting. It also teaches the reader, that love and support, the human spirit can come back from any type of tragic event.

She was fatalistic, wanted to break clean from a violent past and not be among so many nuns (who are nothing like Whoopi, btw): so Darcie goes TO Ireland!? That’s a fret.

But hey, when astral ancestors give you a roadmap you don’t respond with pithy cultural stereotypes: you say “Ok Aunt Ghost: eat, pray, lock ‘n load.” With alarming impulsiveness, Darcie sets off to find a sense of self-worth and control of her future. And in Ireland she almost immediately finds it in — to what I gleefully bet will be the dismay of some readers — a man.

Once connected with Connor O’Brian (who should have been named Callahan, 0 stars there), Darcie’s emotional foundation goes from bog water to bedrock. The lovesick element of this romantic Irish adventure complements the larger theme of scornful Irish fate. Whatever shall be shall be, but it won’t always be bad.

Their romantic chemistry is a salve to the disturbing images of sexual violence from Darcie’s past; though they are stronger together, it’s Darcie who courageously initiated a major change in her fate.

It’s for her who I found myself rooting: as the O’Brians Trilogy continues, she’s gonna need all the help she can get. The past doesn’t always want to be left alone.

Escape is one of those books that once you begin you will just keep going until you’ve finished. It has the beautiful backdrop of Ireland which lends itself to this novel perfectly. The Romance, the escape, the sheer beauty is all there.

It did take me several chapters to really get into the book but then it was just glorious. This is definitely not just a romance story. There are twists and some very dark situations that just kept me engrossed in the whole story.

I was drawn in completely by the wonderful writing style of Jude Mclean. She truly brings Ireland and the characters to life. Darcie is certainly not your typical “I’m looking for love” character, she just wants more from her life. She needs something, anything so she finally follows her heart to Ireland in search of herself, along the way she finds Connor and sparks fly from the first meeting. Is everything going to be smooth sailing now she has met him? Definingly not. Will there be a happy ending for Darcie and Connor? umm maybe, maybe not. Never one to give things away.

Escape is a great, well escape and will take you on a journey of love, memories, past events coming back to haunt you. All in all an ideal read for a summers evening, or any other evening to be honest. Basically just give it a go.

One of the things that I loved about this book is that Darcie was older than Connor. It’s not very often that the man is younger and romance novels. Another thing I loved was that it took place in Ireland. I’ve been to Ireland so many times through other books and I love that I was able to visit it again through this one. Hopefully one day I’ll be there in person. It’s very clear that the author has a lot of love for Ireland. Darcie has been through the wringer, in more ways than one. I felt horrible for her situation and everything she had been through but I found myself wanting to sit her down and say “Lady, you gotta TALK to your fellow!” And Connor of course had to be the grumpy guy, not looking for love. I still had many questions that were left unanswered at the end of the book but seeing us to how this is the first in a trilogy, I’m hoping that they will get answered in later installments. Thank you so much @readjudeclean via @voraciousreadersonly for this complimentary readers copy! I leave this review voluntarily and without influence.

This was a quick and easy read that sucked me in right from the very start. I was gripped and couldn't put it down and I loved the characters especially Darcie who I found really relatable and the members of the O'Brian family, who remind me very much of a friends family.
I have always loved Ireland ever since I was a little girl from the country, the beauty of the surroundings to the folklore, myths and legends and then when I got older the boybands which I was particularly partial too, and still am if I am entirely honest. I have visited several parts of ireland throughout my life and this book perfectly captured the setting and I felt like I was back there.
The ending of the book left me wanting more and I can't wait to read book two.
It is important to say that there are some dark periods in this book with some triggering scenes however the author handled these in a sesitive and empathetic manner in my opinion so it didn't take away from reading enjoyment. I loved it.

This was a very quick read. Darcie is a troubled woman who comes from America to Ireland to find “something.” She sets on Irish soil and immediately feels at home. The descriptions of the Irish towns and countryside were beautiful and made me feel like I was there.

The character development is a little off, though. Darcie is a woman dealing with trauma and a few skeletons in the closet and she meets Connor, who makes her breathless and comes on so strong but somehow that’s exactly what she wants. He had some creeper issues in the beginning that I would expect most women to be put off it right away. But nope, not the MC. I feel like that could’ve been better written.

The epilogue threw me a bit. It was all’s well that ends well until the last three lines that had some nefarious actions. I suppose it’s for the next book but it didn’t do anything for me.

Overall, it was just ok. This book was given to me by Voracious Readers Only for an honest review.

This book has completely captured my heart. I whizzed through it in one sitting and wish there was more.

After a quick introduction to Darcie, we are quickly intrigued by her situation and invested in her journey. A totally lovable character who clearly has a troubled past to reveal.

When she and Connor first meet, the sparks instantly fly and you know that you're going to be in for a bumpy ride.

I found the writing style so comfortable. The descriptions of the places and characters made them jump off the page and I felt completely surrounded and present in their world. Just beautiful.

I hate giving spoilers but have to warn you that there are some great moments and some twists too. Prepare to feel emotionally attached!

I know that Book 2 is imminent - and cannot wait to get hold of it and continue The O'Brian's journey.

One for my 2022 favourites - absolutely loved it and missing them all already!

This book made me happy. There is something ebullient about the Darcy’s joy at finding her place in the world. It’s the most absolutely romantic love story I’ve ever read. I had to buy and listen to the audio. The effect of daffodil fluff floating on the wind is even more powerful than it was in print. If you need a pick me up, read this book. It’s endorphins on the page.

Escape is such a dreamy romance. Darcy, a woman lost, follows a compulsion to travel to Ireland. When she gets there, she feels at home and able to breathe for the first time in ages. In her heart-home she meets heartmates, both the friend of her heart and the man of her dreams.

Conner is perfect, as most love story heroines tend to be. But there is something special about this one. He’s not just “successful, charming, handsome” and unbelievably sexy, he is heartbroken, kind, intuitive, chivalrous… And then, he touches her. 🎆 The heat just adds to the story. It’s revelatory.

I enjoyed this book overall, but I found some elements of the plot a bit too choppy. First, the author has a lovely writing style. Her descriptions of the scenery in Ireland and the colloquial speech of the secondary characters was very evocative. The love story itself was charming, but fell flat for me. The male MC seemed too perfect and female MC a bit too gullible (though after learning more about her life, the reader can understand her naivety). I would have liked more spicy scenes, as this is a modern romance novel. Lastly, I thought that the plot tried to fit in too much (visions of ancestors, MC's trauma, fake MC friend, mysterious ending). In spite of all that, I would probably still read another book by this author because she does tell a lovely story. I have to admit, I really struggled to get into Escape to start with. I struggled with the style of writing but also felt like I was given bits of information that didn't lead to anywhere.
However, as I got further into the book, I began to enjoy the story more and more. And by the end I really did enjoy it.

I found that bits of information still didn't lead to anything else and weren't actually needed but the descriptive language used and dialogue, really did add some fabulous bulk to the story.
As much as I've only given it 3 stars, I'm still looking forward to reading more by Jude McLean.

I really enjoyed the plot for this story and the setting. The main characters being older (late 30s) was relatable and the sex scenes weren't over the top. However, it felt like there were several points that needed to be explored further or elaborated. I often felt like the story would have been so much more if a little more explanation or detail was given to the characters back stories or what seemed like they should have been important points in the story but were glossed over. As one other review stated it felt "fast forwarded" in parts and I completely agree.
I would have loved to know more about Darcie's past, further story time given to her abuser finding her in Ireland and interacting with her and then his death. I would have enjoyed the story of Darcie's ancestors given a bit more attention. Additionally, Darcie and Connor falling in love immediately and no hesitancy on how quickly it was moving felt unrealistic.
All in all, I will read the next book in the series to see how it progresses and to continue reading a story set in beautiful Ireland.

Thank you to @lovebookstours for my gifted copy.

My thoughts: yes! I loved this Romantic suspense novel from the first page to the end! I adored Darcie and her vulnerability and strength to travel to Ireland by herself to heal her traumas and then she runs into Connor which sets off a whirlwind romance. It has drama, emotionally charged scenes and a lot of romance and spice! I truly enjoyed it as I couldn’t put it down & read it all in one sitting! Highly recommend.

When I started reading this I got hooked straight away on the fast flow of the writing. Darcie travels to Ireland, meets Connor and they connect to one another very quickly. But I really liked the way that they connected.
If anyone likes the idea of soul mates or fate then this is a good one. I liked the way that Darcie fitted right in with the locals too. It was a nice addition to make the reader see how much she was suited to this place in the world.
There are some steamy parts, and overall its an enjoyable romantic trip.

This is book one in a trilogy with book 2 due out in August. So I look forward to reading the next one as I enjoyed this and read it in only two sittings.

Jude Mclean uses vivid detail and description to take the reader on their own trip to Ireland alongside the story. The characters are interesting and the set-up with short chapters leads to a fast-paced and quick read.

I’m not a fan of “instant-love” which is what this gives first impressions of however, the relationship is so much more. Once I latched on to the suspense part, the instant love factor made it interesting and had me questioning what was going on. My only wish was that the “twist” was drawn out and explained a little more or hinted at in the beginning on a deeper level. This book wrapped up nicely and knowing it’s book one of the series has me excited to see where the author will take us next!

I was kindly given a copy of this book for an honest review by voracious readers.

Darcie runs away to a new country and immediately "bumps" into the man of her dreams (Connor). The book reveals pieces of Darcie's past throughout the book. Through her journey of self discovery we see a broken woman fighting her own demons for her own happiness and how love conquers all. It's Irish story telling to be sure!

If you like Irish romance, brokenness, rainbows, a good yarn and fairytale HEA, then it is for you, personally I found some elements of the story pushing it a little too far as it was over the over the top.

The imagery created in this book of Ireland was beautiful and I got caught up in the story quite quickly. I was immediately intrigued by the main character and her back story and read the entire book in the same day because I wanted to know what happened to her.

I did feel like some aspects of the story weren’t given as much time or explanation that they needed (such as her coming to terms with her past) - it seemed over and done quite quickly and I was a little disappointed by that.

However overall I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the next one.

The classic love at first sight story coupled with a touch of fate and evil.

The story reduced me to tears at one point because my heart broke along with the Darcie’s and Connor’s. You’ll just have to read it to find out if they made it 😃

This book contains a bit of spice but not too much to tip it into the smutty section (I’d still recommend to my mum! Haha).

I loved the descriptions of Ireland and Darcie falling in love with the country made me fall in love with it too!

I’m hoping there is another book in the pipeline, I need to know what happened next…

I’m just off to book my trip to Ireland…byeeeeee! 🇮🇪☘️

I was kindly gifted a copy of this book for an honest review

After reading a few books that were ok but that i just did not feel any kind of connection to, this book was just what I needed.
I loved Darcie and Connor and just wanted this to be a magical love story and I was not disappointed. I was really invested in them as characters and was hoping for their happy ending...
It was a fast paced romance with an added bit of heat. It followed the normal romance book vibes but for me that this was what i wanted.
If you are looking for romance, intrigue, breath taking scenery, heartache then this is for you.
Looking forward to reading more of this series

Irishman Connor O’Brian knows that fate has played a hand when the woman he has been dreaming about for years arrives at the hotel he is renovating.
As soon as she sets foot in Ireland, Darcie Hartwell knows that she has made the right decision travelling here – it feels like coming home.
Meeting Connor seems as if it was just meant to be.
Will love blossom or will secrets from the past spoil the future? An easily read romance with the touch of the Irish.

(The author kindly made a copy of this novel available for review via Voracious Readers – with thanks).
