The Breakup Project

Rate this book
New Year. New Project. New Love?
What happens when the best-laid plans break a friendship?

As the twin of hockey’s hottest forward, romance-loving Bree Karlsson is used to being ignored, leading to a New Year’s resolution to not date any athlete in her attempt to find Mr. Right. But what happens when the man who might prove to be her personal Mr. Darcy is her brother’s hockey-playing best friend?

Mike Vaughan might be happy playing in Boston, but he’d be even happier if Bree could one day see him as more than a good friend. He agrees to help Bree with a special project in the hope she’ll finally see him as something more. But when a misunderstanding ends in a Valentine’s Day disaster, Bree realizes that her breakup project may have broken her friendship with Mike in two. Can she ever redeem her mistake?

This friends-to-more romance has plenty of heart, humor, and swoon-worthy kisses in this first book of the Original Six, a sweet, slightly sporty contemporary romance series.

I only made it through the first chapter (17 pages) before I called quits on this book. I don’t typically give up that fast, but I feel like that even if I stuck with it, I wouldn’t give it a high rating because of the main girl and her comments.

What’s that phrase? “Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.” Yeah, that’s it. That’s her about the main guy not being her type and being determined at to date a hockey player. *snort*

She’s a chatter box and very judgmental towards her brother’s new girlfriend. Now, I can’t blame her for being concerned for her brother, but her comments and actions are just going to push him farther away. She wasn’t acting like a Christian let alone Christ-like towards the girl. I honestly didn’t like Bree right off the bat because of this and all the comments in her weight.

Disappointing to DNF his when it looks like he’s liked her for a long time and has it bad. I own it on Kindle so maybe I’ll try again at some point, but I know her point of view parts will drive me crazy (but probably not because of her and her comments).

Main Content of what I read:
Bree knows she would be acting like a good Christian but still makes jabs at her brother and his girlfriend; Mentions of Christians & praying for someone.

Bree makes quite a few comments about her brother's new girlfriend before meeting her and is not kind at all when meeting her in person (comments on her looking "like a--" (implied derogatory word cut off), commenting on her fake tan and boobs, calling her plastic, and saying she's not being prejudice making comments about the girlfriend because the girl posts pictures of herself wearing swimsuits that "barely cover the important parts"; Bree also makes a dig at her boyfriend and his girlfriend about them not meeting in church); Bree focuses on her weight and curves a decent amount; A man focuses on Bree's chest & she comments on men lookin at her like a piece of meat; Noticing, Staring, Touches, Embraces, etc. (up to semi-detailed); Mentions of curves & women's weight (including Bree comparing herself to the new girlfriend and thinking that she shouldn't eat if the girlfriend isn't eating).

"God loves you. Full stop. No matter what you do."

I have no clue what I was looking for when I stumbled upon this series, and I certainly had no idea that Christian sports romances even existed AND YET!!! LOOK!!!

So of course I had to buy the whole series and start reading it, as one does.

I had a strong feeling I'd love it and I really did. It was a very sweet love story that kept me smiling throughout.

Mike is a real sweetheart, and I loooooved his PoVs. The way he'd think about Bree was so cute and innocent in a way, which is such a nice change from non-Christian contemporary romances with male PoVs. If you know, you know.

Bree's PoVs on the other hand...don't get me wrong, I loved her too, but she was so judgemental at the start. She was aware of it too, but didn't do much to change her ways.

She judged her brother's girlfriend Chloe, just because Chloe was dressed in a revealing way. The fact that Chloe later turned out to be a not-so-good person doesn't change the fact that Bree already decided she was a bad influence and planned to break up their relationship after talking to Chloe ONCE. And it wasn't even a real conversation, basically just introductions.

By the way, I think Jersey cows are adorable. Yes, I had to go there, I'm sorry.

She also kinda judged her work friend Sylvie who's a goth, but in a more subtle way. And listen, I will defend Sylvie from any and all judgement okay, SHE'S MY GIRL!! I don't think she gets a book of her own, but I'm hoping she'll keep showing up as the series goes on.

Aside from that, Bree was cool. She did frustrate me with her new years resolution though, which I know had to be included for some angst. But you have MIKE standing there, looking at you like you're the centre of his universe and you're still like "but resolution". BREE, COME ON NOW. AGH.

But the wait was worth it, to finally see them get together. I also recommend checking out the extended epilogue, for both the bachelor and bachelorette parties as well as the wedding, AND Holly x Brent crumbs.

Even if Christian romances aren't really your thing, I think you could still read this. They do mention God, and pray a lot, but it's not something that distracts from the story, it goes very well with it. But I am a Christian, so obviously I'm a bit biased.

The next thing is hockey, similarly it's included, but not in a way that will have you going "okay enough hockey, now back to the romance". Some games are described, there's talk of transfers and different teams, but otherwise it's in the background.

One more thing before I wrap this up, Vladimir Josic. I know that statistically my fellow Slavic people are bound to turn up in any sport, but I don't actually expect them to be included in a book, if that makes sense.

Every time I read a book and find a Slavic character inside I get so happy. We get so few mentions and rep that's actually good and not "baaaah evil Slav", so I appreciate that Vlad was included.

I do have one complaint however. He's Slovakian...with a name like Vladimir Josic. That's a Balkan name through and through. So in my mind he's an ex-Yugo.

I'd also love to see him get a book, I don't think he does, but maybe in the future he could. Fingers crossed.

The inner dialogue of a reluctant sports fiction reader:

Me: (scanning my TBR pile) This one is up next.
Inner Book Nerd: (squeaking in alarm) But that's...that's...
Me: I know...
Inner Book Nerd: (voice dropping to a whisper) A hockey book!
Me: We're being brave this year, remember? Breaking out of our reading comfort zone.
Inner Book Nerd: (writhing on the floor while making gagging noises) Sports? Hero? The two don't belong in the same sentence, let alone a whole book!
Me: Now we'll have none of that. Pull yourself together. You're a book nerd. This is a book, and therefore your destiny.
Inner Book Nerd: (muttering) Over my ruffled pages. Humph.
Me: (sighing) It has rave reviews. People are swooning over Mike.
Inner Book Nerd:(perking up) I do enjoy a good swoon.
Me: So we can forgive him for being a hockey player...
Inner Book Nerd: (with a sneer of disdain) I wouldn't go that far!
Me: (in my most wheedling tone) C'mon...let's give it a try. One chapter and there's chocolate at the end of it no matter what you think.
Inner Book Nerd: Weelllll....as long as it's Lindt Intense Mint.
Me: (opening book) Deal.

Reading interlude

Inner Book Nerd: Hey, what are you doing?!
Me: (closing the book) We finished the chapter.
Inner Book Nerd: Since when do we stop at one chapter? Like ever?
Me: I thought we'd ease into things given that the hero is a...you know...sports personality.
Inner Book Nerd: Pshaw! He's also kind and considerate and dedicated to his faith and he hasn't let all the fame go to his head. Plus...
Me: Whoa! You're defending a hockey player hero?
Inner Book Nerd: (looking disgruntled) Well, somebody has to. Look what Bree has put him through already.
Me: (sighing sadly, but also feeling a bookish thrill over the fictional journey ahead) Yeah. This is clearly a case of unrequited love. Bree's just confused. She'll come around.
Inner Book Nerd: (quivering with indignation) What does she know? She dissed Mr. Darcy!
Me: Well, not exactly. She just said she wasn't looking for a Mr. Darcy type which clearly Mike isn't so it's all good. Chocolate?
Inner Book Nerd: Two squares and then we're back to reading. And mind you wash your hands before you pick up that book again. Nothing worse than chocolate smeared all over a page.
Me: (rolling my eyes) Yes ma'am.

Another reading interlude

Inner Book Nerd: Another bathroom break already?
Me: Just stretching my legs. I didn't think we'd be reading so long.
Inner Book Nerd: Well, make it snappy. We have to get back to it. I have a feeling things are going to go south in a really big way and we have to be there to support Mike.
Me: (trying not to gloat) So we're enjoying ourselves? On Team Mike now are we? What about Bree?
Inner Book Nerd: (casting a murderous glare) Seriously, she needs to control of herself, never mind trying to control everyone and everything around her!
Me: Yeah, I like what her mother said....um...here it is:

"In fact, I think the bible tends to encourage faith and patience, my dear. We can't twist God's arm simply because we want Him to hurry up and agree with our plans." (p 22)

Inner Book Nerd: Humph...like she's even listening.
Me: Maybe not now, but I think God's going to work a change in her...
Inner Book Nerd: (looking dejected) If she'll let Him!
Me: Oh, I think she will...eventually...Carolyn Miller will make sure of that.
Inner Book Nerd: Yeah, she's a pretty decent character wrangler, isn't she?
Me: (sitting back down and opening the book) Yes she is, so let's see how she manages to get these two together.

Yet another Reading Interlude

Inner Book Nerd: Whoa! Whoa! Whoooaaaaa!
Me: (looking alarmed) What's wrong?
Inner Book Nerd: I need a moment. This is getting intense.
Me: Oh, okay. (closing book)
Inner Book Nerd: DON'T CLOSE THE BOOK! What are you doing????? Why are you closing the book??? Don't you want to know what happens? Don't you need toe-curling kisses? Swoonworthy happily ever afters. Why. Is. That. Book. Still. Closed?
Me: (reaching into the bibliophile first aid kit and grabbing a paper bag.) Steady. You're hyperventilating. Here, breathe into this. That's right. Slow and steady. Feeling better?
Inner Book Nerd: (weakly) Yes. Sorry. It all got a bit too much for my sensitive reader heart but I'm good now.
Me: How about you just lie back on the fainting couch and I'll read the rest of the book to you? Just keep your eyes closed and keep that hyperventilating bag handy and we'll get through this together.

Final Reading Interlude

Inner Book Nerd: (blowing her nose vigorously) Oh, that ending was...was..
Me: (sighing blissfully) Sweet perfection.
Inner Book Nerd: (dabbing at her damp eyes) Yes...just...so romantical!
Me: (pushing the entire Kleenex box into IBN's hands) Seriously, get a grip and use a clean tissue. That one's shredding with tears and...ugh...just ugh.
Inner Book Nerd: (honking vigorously) Don't mock me! I see that look. You're all supremely smug and ready to tell me "I told you so..."
Me: Wellll....the thought had crossed my mind but I have something urgent to do first.
Inner Book Nerd: Like what? You love nana-boobooing me.
Me: Like ordering the next book in the series.
Inner Book Nerd: (emitting an ear-piercing shriek) There are more?
Me: Five more and the next one is about Brent!
Inner Book Nerd: Woohoo! Can we buy hockey jerseys to wear while we read? Huh, can we?

The Breakup Project is set in Boston, a city I visited a few years ago, and I loved incorporating places I visited in this story. (See some pics at my website www.carolynmillerauthor.com)

Enjoy a book with banter, romance, heart and swoony kisses? Then I hope you’ll check out The Breakup Project, available to preorder now.

I have come to realize that I truly enjoy friends to more romances. And The Breakup Project is probably one of the very best I have ever read of this trope. The author captured the connection that these two had as friends, while the reader was able to see how much Mike cared for Bree.

There was a part of the story where my heart just broke for Mike after a misunderstanding that occurred. He was such a great guy and I really felt for him as he tried to recover from the pain that this event brought on. And I felt for Bree, too, as her eyes and heart began to be opened to a possibility she never had explored before.

These two were such caring and kind individuals who felt things very deeply. They truly were made for each other and watching them work their way toward a happily ever after made for a very romantic story, packed with romantic chemistry.

I loved the connection to hockey, the closeness that Mike had with certain team members and friends, and seeing what the world of contract negotiations and trades was like for them. I am excited to read every book in this series! I was also thrilled with the beautiful extended epilogue that was available through the author’s website. It was the perfect way to wrap up Bree and Mike’s story.

Ok, so I started to read this one, but didn't realize I started out 2/3's of the way in and I read about 25 pages before the light bulb came on. It seemed like I was missing something..lol When I realized, I went back to the first chapter. I didn't make it very far, like 20 pages, before giving up. I really disliked Bree and how judgmental she was. How she hated her brother's girl friend (before meeting her) because she was a model, something she didn't think was very Christian, but her job was ok because she worked with pre-school kids, very Christian. Looked down at the gf, because she posted pictures of herself in a swim suit barely covering her "important" parts. Because I had jumped ahead, I know that judgement doesn't stop, nor the piousness. This one just wasn't for me.

Love love and love this story!! Learning to trust God with our future can be so difficult. Learning to leave those we love in His hands can be even harder. We can know that His plans for us and everyone else in our lives are always for good. That's a promise that breathes hope into the most broken places.

This was a fun story! I liked Bree a lot. We have very similar interests, like her love of high tea and Pride and Prejudice! All the P&P references were awesome. The very first line even! Michael was a guy any Christian girl would love to have waiting on them and I loved his integrity. I'm starting Love on Ice today, the next one in the series!

I love Carolyn Miller’s writing style in all her Regency Romance books so to be given the privilege of previewing the first of her newest series of modern day, sports focused and inspirational books gave me great pleasure.
Misunderstandings, crossed messages and sibling rivalry present a great starting point for a relationship don’t you think? Added to this, Bree’s hockey playing twin brother’s arrogance and attitude is enough to swear off dating hockey players for the year. So enters Mike Vaughan, another hockey player and friend of her brother and Bree declares him “just a friend” too.
Bree learns a lot of lessons in the next year; not the least being clear communication, as well as looking to God and recognising his plan for her life may not be what she thought it would be.
I love how she grows and matures and I look forward to reading more of her and Mike and their families and friends in the upcoming books in this series. And Carolyn’s smart conversations between her protagonists never disappoint!

The Breakup Project is part of a wonderful new series by Carolyn Miller that centers around six hockey players who are friends. In The Breakup Project we learn that Bree Karlsson’s twin brother, Brent, is a hockey player, and one of the reasons she vows to date none of them! Mike Vaughan happens to be a hockey player and that is a problem. The Breakup Project is their story, and it is fantastic!

I was rooting for Mike and Bree to get together from the beginning. The story shares both characters’ Christian faith in a highly relatable way, and I found that refreshing. I enjoyed getting to know Bree and Mike.

I loved reading this story and can not wait for book #2! Carolyn Miller has crafted an incredible story with fabulous characters, great settings and wonderful swoon worthy romance. I highly recommend The Breakup Project. You will not be disappointed with this fabulous read!

I was given a complimentary copy and not obligated to write a review.

First, I know very little about hockey. It’s not a sport I watch. This book has hockey and I enjoyed it. There’s not a ton to overwhelm you, but enough to make it interesting. The main character Bree is done dating athletes and focuses on her job. But when her twin brother needs some intervention, she gets the help of their long time friend and hockey player, Mike to help her! She also has him help with a fund raiser at her job, the communication isn’t great and things get lost along the way. That leads to a big misunderstanding. It was such a good book and I enjoyed reading it. I received a copy of this book from the author. All views stated are my own.

I am not a hockey fan. I’m not really a sports fan at all, though I do enjoy watching a good game of football (either American or European) on occasion. I am however a Carolyn Miller fan, so this contemporary romance series was of course on the top of my TBR list. And rest assured that you don’t need to be a sports fan to enjoy these books! I’ve also had the privilege of already reading (and loving) the final book in the series – Muskoka Blue – so it was really fun to jump in at the beginning and see glimpses of that book’s hero show up in this one as a minor character.

But, in the meantime, just wait until you meet the hero of The Breakup Project! Mike is an all-around good guy. He’s a great friend, a supportive teammate, and a solid Christian who is honest about his shortcomings and his struggles. He also happens to be in love with his best friend’s sister, Bree, and the patience he exhibits as he tentatively begins to pursue her, even when she unintentionally hurts him, is especially swoonworthy. The Bible study he’s in with other hockey players around the world was a great way for the author to introduce us to several of the series’s future heroes, too. I really loved him as a character in general and as a romantic hero, too. And I so appreciated the author’s depiction of his faith and its importance to his life & the decisions he makes (like his sponsorship for a ministry in the Philippines). He has just enough layers to be interesting and multi-dimensional, but it’s Bree who takes home the layers trophy so to speak lol.

It took me longer to warm up to Bree than it did to Mike, but only because our personalities are so different. And yet, once I did get to know Bree more, under the author’s masterful pen, I realized how much we actually have in common. She may be much more bubbly and impulsive than I am (and yeah I may take a step back when i first meet her haha) but at our core we’re really a lot alike. We fiercely love our families and our friends and Jesus, and we have certain standards we won’t compromise on… and we fell in love with a friend. I enjoyed the sort-of juxtaposition between her wanting to be seen for herself (and not her relationship with her star hockey player twin brother) and the fact that she doesn’t really see herself or her own value & contribution to the world.

And y’all… the romance … once it really gets going … whew. There are some yummy, emotion-filled, spark-zinging kisses involved too. I think this quote pretty well sums up how I felt about this swoonilicious romance:

Oh, this was perfection. This was romance. This was Mr. Darcy kissing Elizabeth, this was Gilbert kissing Anne, this was heart-whirling, toe-curling sensation, and she needed – Air. She needed air.

All the heart-eyed emojis for this love story!

Bottom Line: Carolyn Miller is highly talented at creating characters you fall in love with at first sight (Mike) as well as characters you grow to love as the story unfolds (for me, that was Bree). She’s an author you can trust implicitly with where the characters and story are going, and she’s proved that yet again with The Breakup Project! The faith thread, the romance, the hockey angle, and the family vibes (Granny V!) all weave together into one engaging story that will leave you with a smile on your face & in your heart. So happy that Brent’s story is next – I can’t wait to see how that plays out!

Valentine’s Day. He thought the girl he’d loved for a long time had finally agreed to a Valentine’s date. She thought her brother’s famous sports star friend had agreed to being a charity auction prize. These wires weren’t just crossed, they were twisted in a mess. Can he get over his disappointment to reach out again? Will she ever see that he is more than just her brother’s mate? This new contemporary Christian novel by Carolyn Miller is so much more than the usual ‘ho-hum’ Christian romance. You will be challenged and inspired – oh, and there is romance.

Canadians! Hockey! And an HEA! (Can you tell that I 😍 this book?)

Seriously, though, friends-to-more isn't always my favorite trope, but this one worked really well, especially in the second half of the book. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

Not recommended for under 18, at least.

I was unsure about this book when I first picked it up. I mean it was by an author I’d never read, was about some NHL players and romance. But I decided to give it a try because it was Christian.
I’m still not quite sure of all my thoughts on it. Parts of it I really liked, and parts I didn’t care for as much. Sometimes the characters drove me crazy because they didn’t fully communicate and made assumptions instead. Other times there was good communication and things went more smoothly.
Bree was a mixture of fun, insecure, strong, uncertain, and more. I got that she wanted to be known for who she was not for who her twin brother was, and could understand that struggle. And I liked that she was wanting the right man and somewhat trusted God to bring him to her. She did seem to give mixed messages though. She prayed for Mr. Right and asked God to send him to her. She was also willing to wait, but she also decided that she wouldn’t date any hockey players. It was like she was telling God, “please send me a husband, but he can’t be a hockey player because I’m not going to date them.”
Then there was Brent. Oh, he bugged me at first. But I could see that his relationship with God was not what it should be, and he let fame and money go to his head. I liked him better later, but he still bothered me because of his teasing and picking on his twin sister.
Mike was a likable guy. Someone who used his fame and money to help others. Of all the characters, I liked him best.

There were two things that really bothered me and made me lower my rating.
1. There had been talk in a Bible study group about how Jesus didn’t shy away from hanging with those the religious called sinners, and that He must have enjoyed a drink, given the culture of the day. Yes, Jesus turned water into wine, but there were two vastly different things both translated as “wine”. One was unfermented juice. And, given the Bible’s strong and very clear warnings against alcohol or any drink that would make someone drunk, to imply that Jesus drank alcohol sometimes is not biblical. It was only one little mention, but it still bothered me.
2. I dislike it when mothers try to get their friends to find dates for their kids. And Bree’s mom seemed to already know who Bree should marry, but she still talks to her friends and they set up dates with their sons and Bree. Why? Aren’t they old enough to make up their own minds? Why must unmarried people be pushed together when it’s obvious that they aren’t interested and don’t want it? Ugh! Thankfully there wasn’t too much of this.

There were some kisses, some talk about how much skin women were showing (never telling how much but implying that it was more than might be considered decent), there was an auction to raise money for charity were the highest bidder got to go out to dinner with an NHL player, and there was talk about a woman who somehow got a key to her boyfriend’s apartment, let herself in and got into bed with him. Nothing happened because he sent her packing, but it was mentioned. There was a rather nasty man who wanted someone, but was thwarted and then just vanished from the story.

Overall, I sort of liked the story but not really well. I don’t think I’ll read more of the series.

Another good book by Carolyn Miller. The Breakup Project is the first in the series of "The Original Six". You may wonder the series name but its the original six Ice Hockey teams.

Let me start with I am not an Ice hockey fan due to know really understanding it (except the Mighty Ducks). But you don't need to know anything about Ice hockey as while it's a feature the book isn't all about sport.

The book stars Bree who is the twin of Brent a Ice Hockey star and his best friend Mike also an Ice Hockey star. Bree is tired living in Brent's shadow never knowing if people want to date her to get closer to Brent or for herself. Brent has also warned Mike not to date Bree. So at New Years Eve Bree makes a resolution not to date Ice Hockey players.

Mike on the other hand really does like Bree but she sees him as a friend only. We see the interaction between the too as Mike understands Bree more than she realises. In the beginning Brent is making some choices that are not the best. This is where the breakup project starts and brings the two together to save Brent.

I can relate to Bree in many ways we see Bree wanting to be her own person not her brother's sister. Bree has a job she loves looking after children and is doing what she is good at. Her brother thinks she could do more but he doesn't really know her. I myself had a brother who was good at sport, academically, and captain at the school. I was none of these but teachers would say oh I taught your brother he was so good. To be constantly compared when you are so different is hard on a child. Being introduced as someone's sibling can lead to low self-esteem. This happens to Bree in some ways.

Mike on the other hand totally understands Bree and supports what she is doing. As the book goes on we see this in many ways. I won't go into details as that is what you need to read yourselves.

We also have a cast of interesting people in the book, Neighbours, Granny V to name a few.  Good read and can't wait for the next book.

Breanna Karlsson is used to living in her brother Brent's shadow. Being the sister of a talented NHL player isn't easy, especially when men only want to date her because of her brother. When she meets Brent's girlfriend Chloe and becomes upset, Breanna enlists the help of her friend Mike, who is also an NHL player. Together they try to convince Brent that Chloe isn't the girl for him. In the process, Breanna makes a resolution not to date any hockey players for a year. As time passes, Breanna begins to question her decision and her feelings for Mike. Perhaps she was too hasty...

I enjoyed this contemporary romance very much. As always, the author created realistic characters that popped off the pages and made me sympathetic to their circumstances. It was easy to identify with Breanna's feelings of inadequacy and Mike's heartbreak. One if my favorite characters besides Mike was Granny V, who was spunky and hilarious. Though some of the characters' beliefs were a little too lax for me, I did agree with the basic biblical truths overarching the story. I highly recommend this book and am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from the author. A positive review was not required, and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.

The Breakup Project by Carolyn Miller has everything I like in a contemporary romance! It merged one of my favorite tropes, friends to more, with a sports theme, our hero is a Nation Hockey League player, which I love! It is also the first of a 6 book series where all the hero’s play in the NHL and even better, all of the books come out this year!

I really liked both of the main characters in this story. Mike is so kind and has a heart of gold. I liked him immediately and my heart broke for him a couple of times during the story. Bree, while I really liked her, made some decisions that sort of frustrated me at times, but, for the most part I understood where she was coming from and everything worked out in the end.

I think my favorite part of this story was the faith thread. It was prominent and I loved how Ms. Miller wove it naturally into the story, especially the sermons.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is prominent.

Wonderfully swoony and packed with sincere depth, these delightful characters made me smile, cry, and laugh! Miller kept me eagerly turning pages with a clever and thoughtful plot saturated with genuine faith and friendship. Fortunately, sports knowledge is not required to enjoy this story because I have very little. I am eagerly looking forward to reading the remaining installments of this series!

loved it!

The first book by Carolyn Miller I’ve read, and I loved it. Sweet, real characters. Hokey. Mix-ups. And a great granny.

Since we have become a hockey family (3 kiddos playing it currently), I couldn't wait to try Carolyn Miller's new contemporary series about hockey. I have only read her historicals and I love them. This book was very different from what I expected but I enjoyed this sweet romance between Mike and Bree. I love the way Miller threaded their faith throughout their journey in a way that was organic and sincere. Anytime a book is a good read and also challenges my own faith walk, then I recommend it!

Now, this is the Christian hockey romance I've been waiting for all this time without realizing it. The Breakup Project offered so much more than a love story. I simply have too many good things to say about Carolyn Miller's introduction to the Original Six series. I loved the characters; I loved the hockey terminology and insights; I loved the geographic settings; and I loved all of the spiritual lessons within this book. I don't normally annotate books, but this is one book that would be marked up based on how many of God's truths are communicated within its pages. Honestly, I could gush about the Christian faith that was integral to every scene and chapter. While I wish that I had encountered this series earlier, I also believe that God's timing is just right as I wanted to see a Christian hockey book done well, and this one more than delivers. Mike and Bree are believable characters, and I adore how much emphasis they place on their walk with God. This is one book that feels normal to read as a Christian in that people attend Bible study regularly, they have meaningful conversations with church and ministry leaders, and they constantly pray about God's will. All of the spiritual activities are an overflow of the characters' hearts and not simply an add-on to make the book sound more Christian. If you were to take faith away from this book, the plot would not be the same at all; this is now one of the standards I am going to hold other books to based on how well this book executed it.

Not to give too much away, but I also loved this book due to Christian missions playing a prominent role; the conversations around culture shock and re-entry are verbatim from what I've previously taught. If I were to recommend a contemporary Christian fiction title to others seeking books that are clearly Christian, this would likely be near the top of the list. Add to that the sheer enjoyment of the plot, and it feels like this is a story that could very well be relayed to you by friends who happened to have connections with the NHL. This Canadian squealed in delight at seeing various cities represented along with detailed information about draft selections, games, trades, and more. I'm eager to finish the rest of the series based on how incredible The Breakup Project was, and I look forward to reading about godly characters who are aspirational while being relatable. Mike and Bree's relationship was exactly the type of romance I want to see in more Christian romances where patience and self-control are embedded into the core of it, exemplifying some of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. What a model for godly love!

DNF at 57%

This book was so long. I finally decided to DNF because I didn’t care about the couple anymore and didn’t relish what nonsense I’d have to slog through to get to the end.

I so wanted to like this book. A Christian hockey romance?! Yes please. Unfortunately it was a “no thank you”.

Bree wasn’t very likable. She’s so judgmental to begin with and only gets marginally better as we go. But then I feel like she was being a tease with Mike after pretty much rejecting him. Being so touchy feely with him and torturing him because he so wants to be with her but she’s made it pretty clear she doesn’t want him. Mike was a sweetheart. I liked Mike a lot. But their miscommunication conflict. Ugh! I haven’t read such an annoying miscommunication in romance in a long time. It was so ridiculous. Lots of eye-rolling happening from this reader.

And then the Christian message. I felt it was too much. To in your face. I didn’t think it flowed well with the story, dialogue, characters. Just didn’t feel natural.

I’m sad I didn’t like this and don’t have enough hope to try any more in the series. I’m glad there are some clean hockey romances out there and I hope there will be more.

I really liked this book. As a hockey mom, I enjoy reading stories about hockey players. I found this story to be delightful. The author is skilled at developing a reasonable plot, with characters I cared about right away. She also introduced several characters that will be important in the later books in the series, and I just cannot wait to read them all.

A cute quick read but I don't feel like the project was significant. The main characters issues with dating were a little childish.

📚THE STORY📚

Bree is the twin sister of a famous hockey player, a life that definitely comes with its ups and downs. After getting tired of men whose interest in her is more about her proximity to pro sports, she makes a New Year's resolution to not date anyone involved in hockey for an entire year.

Mike is a close family friend of Bree and her brother, and also a hockey player. He's carried a flame for Bree for a long time, but respects the fact that she's his friend's sister and that she has sworn off hockey players.

Despite both of their best efforts, though, the two start falling for each other. Through health scares, charity work, miscommunications, contract negotiations, and all the other chaos of their lives, Bree and Mike are drawn deeper into a romantic connection.

💕THE ROMANCE💕

This hits all the best notes of a "friends to lovers" as well as a "family friend/brother's best friend" romance. Mike is already into Bree from the start, but she takes a while to realize how perfect he is for her as a partner. The plot winds through a whole year of their lives, giving them plenty of opportunities to have fun together and demonstrate the way their shared values and mutual care have built a strong foundation of love.

I enjoyed the way Mike respects Bree on every level, from her New Year's resolution to her relationship with her brother. There are also some rom-com level miscommunications that help dial up the tension and give us insight into where these two need to grow in order to find lasting happiness with one another.

✝️FAITH ELEMENTS✝️

Both Bree and Mike are Christian, and feel strongly that they only want to date someone who shares their beliefs. There is an evangelical bent to the story, with a focus on sharing one's testimony with others, miracles and "God moments," mission work with churches in poorer countries, and a concern about being "unequally yoked."

📝MY THOUGHTS📝

This was my first hockey romance - actually, my first pro sports romance - and I really enjoyed it! Bree and Mike are such fun characters, fully fleshed out. Their family connection and the world of professional hockey create a really strong setting, in addition to the details of Bree's work at a daycare. I loved the "slice of life" plot - so much happens! - and the way it revolved around the holidays throughout the year.

Content Warnings: Bree is the twin sister of a hockey player, and she has the body type that this would imply. Because of this, she often worries about calories and carbs and struggles with body negative thoughts. Because Mike is a pro sports player, his POV also includes attention to diet in terms of avoiding certain foods or being aware that he will need to train differently based on how he eats. There is also a brief mention of sex trafficking and CSE in the context of Mike's visit to the Philippines.

I thoroughly enjoy Carolyn Miller stories. I know when I pick up a novel by Miller, I’m guaranteed a good read. The Breakup Project is no exception. This is a really fun, sweet story. I do admit that it took me a minute to get into the storyline, but once I hit the 20% mark I was totally engaged and did not want to put the book down.

My favorite aspect of this story is Mike Vaughn, the hero of The Breakup Project. To me, Mike represents the ideal man. He’s tall, strong, and handsome for sure, but he is more than just his swoony physicality. He loves Jesus with his whole heart and works every day to be an illustration of Jesus in today’s dark world. And he pays attention to details. He is a watcher … and then a doer. I LOVE this characteristic so much because it proves he actually cares. I wish more people on earth were like Mike Vaughn. The world would truly be a much better place if they were. I did appreciate the romance between Mike and Bree — Miller definitely writes outstanding romantic chemistry. Some of the kisses are out of this world! But I have to say that Bree drove me crazy. I wanted to flick her in the head about 200 times. Honestly, I can’t really say why.

Bree is a very hard worker, she loves Jesus with her whole being, and she always wants what’s best for others. She appears to be an all-around awesome gal! I think my issue stems from the concept of the breakup project. My number one pet peeve is when other people feel they have the right to tell someone how to live, whom to love, how to eat, etc. So, I found the breakup project that Bree enacts incredibly annoying and selfish. Bree wants her brother to break up with someone SHE doesn’t like. Is the woman bad for her brother? Totally. The reader gets this from chapter 1. But everyone is allowed to make his/her own mistakes. Otherwise, you risk resentment, hatred, and a break in a relationship. I’m all for warning people, giving advice, making recommendations, etc. But I am not ok with actually planning to break a couple up just because someone outside of the relationship doesn’t like the couple together. If I had to make a criticism of this story, it would be this notion that someone feels she has the right to assert her feelings and desires into someone else’s relationship. Not cool.

Regardless of my feelings towards Bree and her breakup project, I still really loved my time reading this story. It is a great read, and I am very excited for book 2 to release. If you are in the mood for a well-written, engaging, sweet Contemporary Romance, then I highly recommend The Breakup Project by Carolyn Miller.

I purchased a copy of this novel in eBook form from Amazon.com on December 28, 2021, in order to review. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Sweet and slightly sporty, The Breakup Project is a lovely Christian romance. As the twin of hockey's hottest forward, romance-loving Bree Karlsson has felt ignored one too many times, leading to New Year's resolution of no athletes. But what if her Mr. Right is her brother’s hockey playing best friend? Mike Vaughan is happy playing in Boston, but he would be even happier if Bree would see him as more than a friend. He agrees to help Bree with a special project, hoping he will see him as something more. But a misunderstanding turned Valentine’s Day disaster, Bree realizes her breakup project may have broken her friendship with Mike. Can she redeem her mistake?
This was a fun book! Overall I enjoyed it and appreciated the Christian elements. Bree was a relatable character and I loved her growth. She was a bit frustrating at times, but it made her feel very real. Although she was thoughtful and willing to help, she could be self-centered and stubborn. Seeing her POV, I understood her and was hoping she would figure things out. I really liked how Bree learned from God's teaching and how other believers spoke into her life. Her family was so fun, even if they were certainly involved! I really felt like they loved one another and wanted the best for each other, although it sometimes manifested itself in gentle meddling!
Mike was a sweetheart! I found him so earnest and I really appreciated how he consistently sought the Lord’s leading throughout the book. His faith impacted his whole life and it was so inspirational to see his ministry! It made me consider my own faith and how I view things like worldwide missions. I liked how they appreciated one another's character and supported each other. It took some time for them to find their way together and it did feel a bit long at times, but I think it was good for their character development and for the readers to understand them.
This is a sweet Christian romance with some sports influence! It has only kissing, but has some innuendo discussions. There are also discussions of poverty, natural disasters, and the effects of both.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

Hello heavenly readers, I greet you with great pleasure and bring you an excellent reading recommendation of Christian romantic fiction. I loved this story because compared to other novels of this genre, the author really shows Jesus in her pages and He is not just for decoration. The main couple, Mike and Bree become friends through Brent, her brother. The two share a bond of friendship and complicity in a project that involves praying for Brent, who has turned away from God and gotten a model girlfriend who doesn't share his faith. This is a cause of concern for Bree and that is when she decides to ask Mike for help in counseling her brother on the right path. The two begin to have romantic feelings for each other, but despite their mutual attraction they soon drift apart due to their busy work schedules, distance and misunderstandings that arise between them. They decide to leave their hearts and lives in the hands of God, who is the main lead of this story that also contains good mood, family, emotional moments, friendship, romance and divine miracles. A beautiful and excellent story that I highly recommend.
