The Chosen One #0

Sweet Nothings

Rate this book
Sam Baker couldn’t be more normal. He’s a teacher at the local middle school and the most exciting part of his day is dealing with a classroom full of hormonal preteens. His life takes a turn for the weird one stormy night when he finds a small boy on his doorstep. A boy who growls, flashes unnaturally blue eyes, demands for Sam to call the alpha-- whatever that is-- and gives Sam the one name he wishes he could forget: Vaughn Jerrick.

Vaughn Jerrick is the alpha to a pack of wolf shifters and a doctor to the supernatural world. After sharing a steamy one night stand with Sam years ago, Vaughn couldn’t consider the possibility of a future with the man, no matter how much he wanted him. Bringing a human into his world is against the rules, but one phone call changes everything, and Vaughn finds himself face-to-face with the man who could give him everything he’s ever wanted.

Rescuing one small child turns into saving six from a dark and uncertain fate, and although Sam doesn’t understand the world he’s been forced into, he would never turn his back on children in need, even if it means confronting his past with Vaughn.

As Vaughn and Sam join forces to protect the children put into their care, the future they’ve both dreamed of is within their reach, but first they need to survive the sinister force looking to rip away everything they’ve come to hold dear.

Adorable chosen family story was adorable.

I was really curious how this book, where 6 kidnapped supernatural kids were rescued by a fierce human and an alpha werewolf, was going to tie into the series and was pleasantly surprised by how it actually did.

As the story began, the story focused a lot on not only the budding romance between human Sam and alpha wolf Vaugh, but also on 6 y.o. wolf cub Ollie and 14 y.o. bear shifter Ben.

And OMMFG, I freaking LOVED Ollie to pieces. He totally made this kid-centric story for me.

However, as the book progressed, the focus shifted over to Ollie's 11 y.o. "brother" and young mage, Henry, who was also too huggable for words.

As it turned out, this prequel to the series was actually an "origin story" of sorts for Henry, who turned out to be one of the Guardians of the Chosen One.

The romance wasn't exactly what I'd call slow burn, more of a Fated Mates tale, but it was done well and didn't come across as too much of an insta-love, since Sam had been crushing on the slightly-older Vaughn since high school.

There was 'some' magic and shifting, but the heart of the story mostly centered around the romance and the kids, which was more than okay with me.

The pacing was consistent, other than a short period right before the last bit of excitement happened, but that slow part was fine in the overall arc of the story.

The angst was kept to manageable levels, and the feels with what the kids had gone through kept tugging at my heart strings pretty hard, but the steamy bits were more of a lack-luster after-thought, for me at least.

So if you like mates stories with a whole passel of cute kids, I'd highly recommend this one and rate it at around 4.25 stars.

I'm dying to jump straight into the Chosen One series, now that I've gotten a taste of this author's writing style. : )

Reread February 2024

I really enjoyed this so much more this time for some reason.

Reread April 2019

Okay, so I just read this like a month ago and I don't know what possessed me to reread it again but I think I enjoyed it a little more this time. Rereading it also gave me a little more insight to Vaughn's behavior after their first encounter. A good solid 4 stars this time.

I ended up enjoying this more than I thought I would in the beginning. I love true mate stories but I'm very picky about them. And here, Vaughn annoyed me. I never understood why he didn't know Sam was his mate when he met him at the bar. It was never explained. Plus, Vaughn apparently tried to have a "few relationships" in the years in between the bar "incident" and them meeting up again. That is not how I like my mate stories. But, once they reconnect, they are perfect together and Vaughn won't let Sam get away again. Sam is my favorite though. I love how he was with the kids and just immediately wanted to take care of them.

I loved all the kids in the story too. I'm looking forward to what is in store for Henry.

Exceptional!!!

I’ve read this book so many times, this is the prequel of The Chosen One series, but it was, if I’m not mistaken, the third book published, the first time I read it was the third, after that I read in the suggested chronological order, this book is one of my favourites and I never get tired of it!!!

Astonishing plot, it hooked me right from the start, the first scene was already amazing, Sam and Ollie’ interaction was perfect, in fact every scene was so rich in details, the characters were fascinating, every single one of them, it was fun, emotional, arousing and thrilling at the right dosage, it was a delight, congratulations to Macy Blake!!!

The dynamic between the main characters was mesmerising, seeing the relationship growing, and not forgetting the super steamy and passionate scenes between them.

I also have this book on Audible, outstanding perfomance from Michael Dean, he’s one of my favourite narrators, one thing that I really appreciate is he says exactly what is written on the pages. He is very accurate with the words on the book, no changes, and adding the impressive technique, it’s the perfect match, his acting was incredible, high praises to him!!!

I'm genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this. *side-eying the cover and title* whispers:I blame you for my doubts.
It was a alot ridiculous & to be frank there are more flaws to the story than not.
BUT I completely fell for Sweet Nothings and all it's lovable characters.
My heart is weak for all the supernatural children that are saved and taken into the Jerrick Wolf Pack.
All the healing and comfort.
The cuddling.
The way the pack came together to protect those children.
The Romance isn't necessarily the priority here. It's rushed and gives fated-mates/insta-love a bad name. I'm a huge fan of insta-love, but in this case the execution fell short. And sigh, the dialogue during the sex scene had me cringing. It's all predictable mate bed talk, but it didn't quite work.
Regardless, Sam and Vaughn fawn over these kids, love them, shelter them, protect them.
That was all I needed to fall in love with the story. Sam, Vaughn & most of the secondary characters might be two dimensional, but the kids were not. At least for me, they came alive and their differences were apparent same with the depth of their personality. My curiosity and interest definitely lay more with the children than the adults <--- this is odd for me, I'm not particularly fond of children but in this case the prequel felt more like an intro to their foundation rather than Sam and Vaughn's love story.

Sweet Nothings is pretty straight forward, simple, and plays with over-used plot devices, themes and tropes. Personally, I needed this recognizable & predictable paranormal story. It's adorable and I'm cautious but curious about the next book.
I loved finding everything I love about prn/fantasy in one place, prophecies, magic, shifters, mages, hellhounds, seers, villains, fated mates, the chosen one...

Recommending? Perhaps. I think anyone looking for a bit of escapism, willing to suspend their belief, forgive imperfection and craves a sweet paranormal story would enjoy this.

So I know this is Vaughn and Sam's story, but since I read this after reading All or Nothing, so it was actually more like Henry's origin story for me and it was wonderful!

Sam and Vaughn have a history that leaves a bad taste in Sam's mouth. When he's forced to call Vaughn after a young boy, Ollie, shows up at Sam's door everything changes in an instant. Sam is swept into a world of magic and both wondrous and monstrous creatures, but the best of all of it is the kids. Henry and his brothers and sisters have been through a lot and Sam and Vaughn are fierce in their love and protection of these kids.

Ollie and Ben stole my heart and really want to see these two grow up and get their own HEA. The kids were all adorable without being cloying. I'll be running through the rest of this series for certain in the the order the author has listed.

So I had All or Nothing (book 1) on my kindle ready to go. I started reading to discover there’s actually a book 0 (this one) Sweet Nothings. Then a book 0.75 The Trouble with Love and yes a book 0.76 Santa Trouble.

And while I’m on my soapbox I have to say I don’t like the covers. I’ve skipped past these loads of times. There was just nothing to hold my attention.

Anyway enough moaning.

This book was a complete delight. When written correctly a book featuring cute and adorable kids will always be a winner. It’s a super sweet cavity inducing romance. I’m moving straight onto book 0.75 now.

As a set up for the series I suppose this book is important. But judged on its own merit, it’s pretty lackluster. What we have here is a story about the care and feed of six orphaned children...chapter after chapter...ad nauseum. I think I might also have developed a cavity.

After researching the next couple of books in the series and discovering they are mmm/+, I am bowing out now.

Sweet Nothings is the first book within The Chosen One series. Well, the prequel that is. I honestly never knew this existed until recently. Which, yes, I'm a little annoyed that I didn't know about it but I'm happy that I dove into it. Mostly because of Sam and Vaughn. They were just way too adorable and made me want more.

Besides their steamy romance, I really enjoyed seeing all the different types of shifters. Especially the hellhound alpha. I also really liked Nana. She was probably my favorite character throughout this, and I hope we see more of her. Then there's the kids and, ugh, I could just go on and on.

In the end, I'm definitely going to jump into the next book because I need more from these shifters. Lots and lots more. Bring on the insta-love!

Great intro to this new world

I'm really liking this supernatural world from Macy Blake.

This is the set up to the universe, so it's not a full length novel but it still manages to pack quite a lot of works building in without becoming overwhelming.

I loved both Sam and Vaughan and the kids were absolutely adorable and I really appreciated the set up for each oc the different types of supernatural creatures.

You never know what you're going to get, in terms of quality, when you read a shifter book, but this one was surprisingly good. The found family interactions with the kids was so sweet and heartbreaking. I definitely teared up a few times.

Overall, this first entry in the series was well written and emotionally impactful. I think developing the romance between Vaughn and Sam was a little lost among the rest of the plot, but this is a prequel, and fated mates romance tends to move very fast anyway, so I wasn't bothered.

2.5 This was a nice warm up for the The Chosen One series.
I this story we get to meet Sam and Vaugh before they were 'Papa' and 'Daddy', as well as to watch the events unfold that led us to Henry and the others getting rescued.

I'll admit that the familial aspects in this overshadowed the main couple for me a bit.
I was more invested in the kids and the family they found in each other and the Jerricks.
Nana is a treasure that needs to be protected at all costs.

I do love Sam and Vaugh together though, even if Vaungh's initial treatment of Sam really got on my nerves and I needed a bit more groveling to really let it rest.

Also, I know most of us aren't picking up this series for the fantasy aspect, and that's absolutely okay - I definetely was looking for the romance myself - but there's some definite holes in logic here when it comes to the magic system and just general reasoning.

Even though this is a prequel, it's probably actually better read in pub order so you have a better grasp on the world.

All in all this does a good job setting up for the rest of the series.
Sign me up for kiddos finding a family and puppy piles.

Reread

Same rating as before, although I think I enjoyed this more than last time.

I wish we got a book about Ben, but I am excited to see Henry flourish in the next books being the guardian of the chosen one!

3.5 stars

This story was cute, I don't think I will continue with the series. I was more interested in Sam and Vaughn rather than Henry.

This was a big case of insta love but since so much happened within the first couple chapters I wasn't mad about it. If was like a typical insta love romance I would have DNF'ed really fast but this book had a great way of hooking you in and made you want to go on the adventure with Sam (human) Vaughn (werewolf) and their newly adopted 6 cubs: Ben (bear shifter), Ollie (werewolf), Emily (can't remember what she was), Natalie (fox shifter), and Henry (Mage).

This book is a prequel to the Chosen One series which is about Henry and since I didn't care enough about Henry in this story I am not going to continue with this series. I do recommend this book though, it was quick and light hearted and hit all the right feels.

Let's face it: the romance part is more the usual mating story between an alpha wolf and his fierce human, cute with a bit of steam but nothing new. It's the family part, the being suddenly dads for 6 traumatized kids that makes this story worth reading and why I read it a 2nd time. It's more about lovable characters than about a paranormal adventure which is a shame because rescuing those 6, keep them save and and defend the enemy had potential but that potential wasn't completely realized. So at the end it's only a prequel and for that it's a good one but not what it could be and unfortunately the later series takes a complete different route.

I liked this one. It is a good prequel and I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series
I liked Sam. I felt for him with his hurt after his first encounter with Vaughn, I just felt that he gave in and just accepted things too easily.
Vaughn basically did a wham bam thank you mate and walked away no contact for years and even though Sam worried about calling him when he met Ollie he didn’t really say anything to him, it was quickly discussed but he never really took Vaughn to task for it. A lot was forgiven because of Vaughn being a werewolf.
And he took the whole werewolf thing too well. I’d expect a little questioning but he showed no self-preservation at all. It was explained that Vaughn and Ollie were werewolves and they introduced him to a whole new world full of creatures he didn’t know existed and he just stands up to people and puts himself straight in the middle of situations showing no fear. I appreciate that he was protecting kids, but I’d expect him to stop and question himself at least.
This being said the book was still enjoyable. The storyline was engaging and kept me reading on. I loved the kids, all of them had their own personality. Ben broke my heart, what he had been through was really sad and to see him starting to trust the guys was great, you could just see he was going to blossom under Sam and Vaughn’s care. I also really enjoyed Nana she was great.
Looking forward to continuing on and I hope we get to see some more of Ben & Ollie in Henry’s book

I just recently finished With Kids Gloves, which was Ollie's HEA and after reading about Grandpa William and what happens and crying like a baby, I had to come back and start the series over again.

Reading about how Ollie and the kid crew, Sam, Vaughn, Nana, and Grandpa came to be a family made me cry like a baby again. I swear, I don't know how I got so emotionally involved with this series, but I really am.

I seriously recommend these books to everyone.

I had to bump this up to 5 stars, I generally read from the bundles and forget to update the individual books

So sweet...

I know that this was only an intro to the main guardians story but I really liked Sam. Not so much the alpha. I wish they had more time together instead of the 11 years later epilogue.

This book series wasn’t on my radar until a friend insisted that I read it. I’m really glad that she did because I loved this story. I always love stories about shifter children and this one didn’t disappoint. I loved both Sam and Vaughn. I thought they had really good chemistry together and loved how they treated all the children. I loved all the children and felt really bad for all the things that they went through before they were rescued. Ben especially touched my heart.

The story itself was really good and kept me entertained throughout. I was left with some unanswered questions and since this is a prequel, I’m not sure if they are answered in the first two books of the series or not. Overall, this was a really wonderful book. I just hope the first two in the series are just as good.

Better than 3.5 but not quite 4...only I couldn't see rounding down because I devoured this and immediately started the next one.

And, well, after seeing all of Todd's updates on this series I felt almost compelled to read them. I know reading this one isn't necessary to starting the main series, but I'm a completist and had to start here...
