If you could tell your mum anything, what would it be?Samuel Johnson, Amanda Keller, Vika and Linda Bull, Guy Pearce, Elizabeth Tan, Rebecca Gibney, Peter Helliar, Clare Wright, Hilde Hinton, Gillian O'Shaughnessy, Adam Spencer, Brooke Davis, Lawrence Mooney, Patti Newton, Shane Jacobson, Julie Koh, Susie Youssef, Lehmo, Favel Parrett, Matilda Brown and many more ...A heartfelt, honest and very human book of letters that will make you smile and make you cry. It is the perfect gift for the mum in your life. And a reminder to tell her how you feel before it is too late.
I bought Dear Dad, a few years back, for my husband for Fathers Day. I had each of our children write a short letter to him, like the contributors in the book, and I hid each letter within. Had him in tears!
Guess what I received for Mothers Day, this year? What a treasure!
Something I note in the majority of letters, in this book, is the difficulty in expressing words worthy enough to capture how important mums are & the sacrifices each mother makes for her children.
These letters were a standout for me: Russell Morris John Brewster Luke O’Shea Peter Helliar Carolyn Creswell Brooke Davis Rob Pegley Katie Little
And the letter that pulled the strings of my heart the most: Jeff Jenkins
If you are lucky enough to still have a Mum or a Mum like figure in your life, sit down tonight and write to them. Tell them how much you love them and how special they are. If your Mum is no longer here, go out and find the brightest star and relay your feelings. They will hear you! This book was beautiful and a great reminder to tell people how special they are while you still can.
It’s Mother’s Day today, so what better book to read than Dear Mum, edited by Samuel Johnson.
I read the first book Johnson edited, Dear Santa; the year it was released but have been slack about getting round to Dear Mum. However it was worth the wait with an excellent mix of tender, loving, funny, moving and relatable letters from ninety notable Australians to their mums, both the ones still with us and the ones who aren’t.
Some letters are a few pages long, some are a few lines; but they are all worth reading and celebrate motherhood in its many shapes and forms. The fact that the ninety contributors come from a diverse range of backgrounds and careers and span a wide range of ages, means that as the reader you get ninety very distinct letters, despite the one central topic; which is what makes this such a good read.
Dear Mum is the perfect Mother’s Day gift and a book that everyone should read. Best of all, you won’t just by buying your mum or yourself a great book they she/you will treasure; but proceeds from each sale go to Johnson’s Love Your Sister charity to support cancer research. What more could you and your mum want than that?
This short but sweet read is one which I recommend. Whether you read a letter a day or enjoy it in one sitting with a nice cup of tea and a to die for cupcake from The Flour Arrangement; it’s sure to make you mum’s favourite child if you buy her a copy! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dear Mum is a compilation of short letters from well known Australians, assembled and edited by Samuel Johnson. This was a book club pick in the lead up to Mothers Day. This anthology celebrates motherhood, and also highlights the various kinds of women that raised Australia's notables.
Like most anthologies, I think my enjoyment of it would have been greater had I picked it up earlier in the month and read only a couple at a time, rather than cover to cover in a day or two. The letters ranged from heart warming to heart breaking, but showed the emotional impact mothers have on their children.
As an adult that lost her mum early, it made me think about what I would write to her now, 13 years after we lost her. I think it would be thank you... for being true, real, loving and for showing me that perfect is impossible, family is everything, and loving makes life worth living. This is one for readers that want to reflect on what your mum means to you or what your kids may write to you one day. ⭐⭐⭐🌠 (3.5/5).
**also important to note, every sale contributes to cancer research x
Am absolutely stunning collection of letters from many of Australia's celebrities to their mothers. Funny, heart breaking, amazing stories are revealed here, with care, compassion and raw honesty. An added bonus is funds from this wonderful book go directly to cancer research, via Sam's charity Love Your Sister.
A cute little book that gives a heartfelt insight into the complex relationship (sometimes) between children and their mothers. Rebecca Gibney's brought tears to my eyes. Her mother is truely a beautiful soul and it shines through in her letter to her mother. A lovely read, that is easy to pick up and put down.
Dear Mum was a collection of letters from prominent Australians to their mothers, similar to Letter to My Teenage Self which I read last year. I was expecting to be moved by these letters but sadly most of them were totally uninspiring.
So easy to dip in and out of. The love for all Mums is so obvious from these wonderful letters. Not all 'personalities' are well known, but their words are beautiful anyway!
What an amazing array of letters. So many different relationships with Mums and Mum figures. A fantastic tribute to our amazing Mums and their strength.
Everyone has a different sort of relationship with their mother. A truly inspiring read, some resonating better than others, some outright laugh out loud funny. Short tales to their mother.
‘From the team who gave you the bestselling Dear Santa, Dear Dad, and Heroes Next Door comes an honest, moving, emotionally memorable collection of letters to their mothers from some of Australia’s most notable notables. The perfect gift for the mum (or mum figure) in your life! If you could tell your mum anything, what would it be? Samuel Johnson, Amanda Keller, Vika and Linda Bull, Guy Pearce, Elizabeth Tan, Rebecca Gibney, Peter Helliar, Clare Wright, Hilde Hinton, Gillian O’Shaughnessy, Adam Spencer, Brooke Davis, Lawrence Mooney, Patti Newton, Shane Jacobson, Julie Koh, Susie Youssef, Lehmo, Favel Parrett, Matilda Brown and many more … A heartfelt, honest and very human book of letters that will make you smile and make you cry. It is the perfect gift for the mum in your life. And a reminder to tell her how you feel before it is too late.’ I adored this book. Having read and loved a couple of these collections before I went into this book with high hopes and I am happy to say this book not only lived up to my high expectations and well and truly surpassed them. This book made me laugh and cry in equal measures which was something that I hadn’t expected. The emotion and love radiated off the pages and made for a really moving reading experience. I also loved that all of the letters were donated free of charge so that more money could be raised for cancer research. Knowing that these letters were written for a good cause and not for profit made me feel a lot of respect for the authors. I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this book. It was filled with beautiful stories that were both moving and funny and I am so glad that I now own this book and can reread it many times in the future. Dear Mum by Samuel Johnson is a must read for everyone.
Johnson has compiled a 1-2 page letter written to mum from different authors, actors, comedians, filmmakers and others from all walks of life. Quite a variety of perspectives to motherhood.
