Victoria Thompson knows exactly what she wants in life: to finish her graphic design degree so she can land a full-time job with benefits, to spend her free time painting when she’s not working alongside her best friends at Clinton’s Family Restaurant, and to continue sleeping with her ex-boyfriend without letting him get too close.
She knows that loving Rhett-- her favorite person, her best friend since childhood, her steady and devoted golden boy-- means letting him go eventually. But she’s not ready to let him go yet.
Her proposed arrangement is simple. They can be friends-with-benefits when he’s home in Hampton, Ohio as long as he promises to date other people when he’s back at school.
Everhett Wheeler is a man with a detailed plan: graduate with his MBA, then move to Virginia to take his rightful place in the executive suite at his grandad’s company. He’s calculated, confident, and self-assured. The one thing he can’t predict is what happens to his relationship with Tori once he moves away for good. He has always wanted more, and she knows it. But in a battle of wills, she always wins.
After an unplanned weekend together, Tori and Rhett start to question whether the arrangement they’ve relied on for the last three years is too much or just not enough. Is it time to go their separate ways? Do they have the courage to commit to a real relationship? Or will a series of surprise visits, soul-crushing lies, and unexpected news tear them apart before they can even try?
When You’re Home is a steamy new adult romance that includes mature themes, offensive language, substance abuse, and infidelity.
Abby Millsaps is an author and storyteller who's been obsessed with writing romance since middle school. In eighth grade, she failed to qualify for the Power of the Pen State Championships because all her submissions contained the same theme: young people falling in love. #LookAtHerNow
She's best known for writing unapologetically angsty romance that causes emotional damage for her readers. Abby prides herself in writing authentic characters while weaving mental health, chronic illness, and neurodiverse representation into the fabric of her stories.
Abby met her husband at a house party the summer before her freshman year of college. He had a secret pizza stashed in the trunk of his car that he was saving for a midnight snack—how was she supposed to resist that level of golden retriever energy and preparedness? When Abby isn't writing, she's reading, traveling, and raising her three daughters.
I don’t care how much you justify it — being with the girl you claim to love with all your heart and being with her sexually, while still having a girlfriend and also sleeping with said girlfriend at the same time (for 3 years!!!) is not what I would consider a romance. I don’t care if that’s the only way she’ll allow you to be with her sexually, you don’t go and find yourself a girlfriend — who you also have sex with — just to do so. I honestly don’t know what bothered me most: the fact that the H is clearly head over heels in love with the h and has been ever since but at the same time also having a girlfriend in school who he obviously also sleeps with (ugh I seriously hated this)… or the fact that the H constantly cheats on his girlfriend with the h every single time he comes home (and the gf apparently doesn’t care and simply turns a blind eye on it)… or the fact that the h, Tori, encourages — practically forces — the H, Rhett, to be with someone else whenever he’s in school.
Honestly, this whole thing was a mess. I didn’t feel anything other than annoyed, frustrated, and extremely bothered the entire time. It was a pretty long book too, and I found myself skimming a lot. Apparently there’ll be more books since it ended on a cliffhanger, but I don’t think I have it in me to read the rest. Their relationship and “love” for each other clearly wasn’t as convincing as it was meant/supposed to be. And the reason why Tori was adamant on pushing Rhett away was kind of ridiculous to be honest. I mean yeah, I get it, you have a possibility (emphasis on possibility — yes, you guys, she wasn’t even sure 🙄) of getting cancer someday since your mom had it (just like a thousand other people’s moms/dads had it, yet these people didn’t let it control their future), but to the point that the only way you’ll allow yourself to be with the love of your life is for him to be with another woman as well?!? Naw, girl, naw. Also, Rhett could’ve just gotten a “girlfriend” like Tori insisted, but did he really have to keep sleeping with her too — for years?? Yeah no thanks. I mean there’s also this thing called pretend-dating ya don’t need to have sex to do so y’know. If there’s a will there’s a way is all I’m sayin. The means just didn’t justify the ends for me. Bummer since this is a debut novel by a new author. I mean this might be other readers’ thing, but it just didn’t work out for me.

SERIES: Hampton Hearts #1 GENRE: New Adult TROPES & THEMES: friends with benefits, childhood friends, triangle CLIFFHANGER: kind of - we get HFN with unanswered questions TRIGGER WARNINGS: cheating, talk about cancer & loss of a loved one( off-page in the past) RATING:⭐⭐⭐
messy realistic angsty
I like the writing. I couldn't tell that this was a debut novel. The author was very skilled with the pacing of the story and the steam was equally well done. It reminded me of some old-school angsty New Adult books that I devoured back in the day.
Readers looking for a convoluted and complex story with characters that makes you crazy and angsty storyline - This is a book for you!!! But definitely be aware that this is a book one out of three that follows the same couple.
Now, for safety, many readers often ask me. No is not safe. When I said mess. I meant it. Because honey, our heroine is certified queen of mess. She is self-sabotaging. She can't be with her high school boyfriend so when he goes to college she encourages him to find himself a girlfriend. Which he does. But... when he comes back for visits to their hometown well they continue theirs with benefits relationship. Now look here the reason why she won't be with him Silly, I know. But I kind of get her. I don't completely understand. Because I could sit her ass down and explain why that is stupid. But I guess this is a book where she goes on that journey and discovers it herself. You only have to have the patience to go along with her.
Now I am madder with our hero Rhett. Boy if you love our girl Tori, why are you doing this. Also, why are you wasting this other girl's time? He made me so frustrated. Because he chooses to be a cheater. That is 100% icky. I can't justify it. Nor, should I.
The ending is somewhat happy for now. Some things happened and I want to know the answers. Glad to read the next book and see how these two will work everything out.
Overall, it is an okay read with a beautiful cover.

Wow, this book was something else. It had been on my tbr for a bit and I kept bumping it down because I knew it was gonna break me. Boy did it. This book demolishes your heart strings. You feel so much for these two and their messy, angsty relationship.
It was like the ultimate whiplash... One moment you're elated for them, the next you wanna bonk them upside their heads, the next you wanna hug them because you know they are hurting so damn much, the next you want to hate them for what they are doing to themselves and each other.
This is NOT your run of mill friends with benefits read. This is so raw and soul crushing. It was almost like they were their own worst enemies. Self sabotaging all the good things. This does have some intense subjects that I usually shy away from... but this book hooked me and has me yearning for more.
The unknown is scary. The unknown can make us pause our lives. The unknown can grip us so tightly that we drown in it.... but what if, what if the unknown is something beautiful and will make us stronger in the end. Would you go all in? Would you jump off that cliff? Would you knowing that someone who loves you unconditionally would be right beside you every scare step forward?
I pretty much adore Rhett. Like he was perfect. The ultimate pursuer and always all in. Tori was another story. I felt like she was selfish at times (ok lots of the time), but that is love. It's all consuming and overpowers. These two for sure have some work to do and I can't wait to read about it. That ending... Gah!!
My advice - go into this one blind. Totally blind.
Debut novel, what? How is that possible? Abby Millsaps created a beautiful and heartbreaking story about the lengths we go to for those we love. Tori & Rhett's story was not easy, but it was earned in such a powerful way. I went into this book practically blind and in doing so I got to fall in love with their story from the very start without any outside influence. We've just now begun to see what is in store for Tori & Rhett but let me tell you I am here for all the struggles, tears, drama and inevitable feels that are sure to come.
There is so much I want to say about When You're Home but I think it would be a disservice to give away my feelings when I feel like this is one of those stories where you have to read it for yourself and form your own opinions. There are triggers in this story that could be harmful to certain readers so be cautious of that but if you can handle those then dive into this book and fall in love with the beginning of Tori & Rhett's story. Book two comes out in just over a month and I am dying to see what is in store for them.
What I will say is I did shed some tears for the moment that I thought would never come and the undeniable way that Rhett loved Tori even after everything. This has been one of my best reads of 2021 because of the way it made me feel so deeply. It wasn't over the top or too much it was just real, raw and beautiful.
Self note H sleeps with the h - he claims to love and says is obsessed with - and the ow the whole book (this went on for 3 years). The h and the Ow stayed faithful to the Zero. No thanks.
This book captivated me from beginning to end, it's engaging and very well written and you'd never guess it's a debut novel. When You're Home has everything I love in a romance: a strong friendship and an incredible chemistry between the two main characters, tons of angst, emotions and steam, and great side characters. That said, I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because I has some issues with the story. I understood both the heroine and the hero motives behind their behaviors and action, I understood their fears and insecurities, but at 24 maybe you should be less childish. I can justify Tori's actions, because she's trying to keep things "casual" due to her fears and, in some way, to protect Rhett. But I cannot excuse him.. The fact that the hero I cannot wait to purchase and read While You're There, the second chapter in Rhett and Tori's story and see where it leads them.
*** I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
This one was exquisite angst. At 10%, I was already anticipating an emotional storm and it was everything I anticipated and more! This friends to lovers to COMPLEX friends with benefits had me loving then hating the MC’s because I was so damn frustrated with how they handled things but through it all, their love was palpable even though it was always just below the surface. No spoilers here because I think to truly enjoy every twist of the knife in your heart and every seemingly insurmountable circumstance, it’s best to go in blind.
Rhett and Tori are absolute endgame and while I was reading, sometimes I just wanted them to get together already and stop freaking torturing me! But now that the book is over I’m in deep book hangover and can’t wait for the next book. I need to see how these two make out!!
Please I hope it’s not as angsty as this one. My heart can’t handle it! Also, all the side characters just got me too and I sincerely hope they get their own books!
This is book one and it is a friend's to lovers second chance romance and it is Victoria and Rhett's story and omg this is one emotional journey and a must read but it does end with a cliff hanger. Tori and Rhett had dated all through high school but she broke up with him so he could go to college but there connection and feelings for each other hasn't lost it's straight over time in fact it has just got stronger. When Tori comes up with a agreement between them that they get together with no strings attached when he comes home for breaks Rhett agrees even though he definitely wants everything with Tori as he loves her so much he decides that he will take want she offers hoping she will change her mind at some stage. Tori just want Rhett to be happy and that is why she set the rules but she knows that she will never stop loving him. When you read this story you will understand why Tori feels like she does as she doesn't want Rhett to suffer and go through what her dad did when her mum died but you find yourself hoping that she changes her mind as she will miss out on a very special kind of love with Rhett. I absolutely loved this book and I couldn't put it down and I cried so much with what Tori was going through and the turmoil in her life and understood why she didn't want to move forward with a relationship with Rhett. This book was so addictive and a real page turner that took you in right from the first page and it is the type of story that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it and it had such an emotional ending and I can't wait to read the next book to see what will happen next. This is the first book that I have read by Abby Millsaps but definitely not the last as it was so well written and definitely worth reading.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Oh this book!! It absolutely wrecked me! 100% pulled my heart out and stomped on it. I was in pieces.. but then it mended every piece of my broken heart back together and better than it was before I read it. It’s a rollercoaster ride.. so many sweet highs and low lows 🎢
This is a truly incredible book for Abby’s first novel. It was beautifully written and I know it’s a book I will return to again and again 🙏🏻
Rhett and Tori’s relationship is both heartbreakingly beautiful and sad. Knowing why Tori is holding herself back from what she truly wants is both selfless and devastating. I will admit I did mumble at my kindle a few times.. “Just tell him you love him, give it a chance!” Was said more than once between tears and getting hot under the collar (steeeeamy scenes between these two! You can feel their chemistry!)🔥
Rhett... oh Everhett Wheeler. He is the perfect book boyfriend and one I’ve added to my long list 😉 The unconditional love he feels for Tori and the certainty that they are meant for each other is beautiful ♥️
When Tori made him believe she had slept with Fielding (in Rhetts bed no less) I was in pieces! I was so mad with her, but I understood what she was doing. Then when she got the call she’d been waiting most of her life for and all she could say was “Call Rhett” I was scared for her but delighted she broke down her own walls! 🙌🏻
I could talk about this book forever. I am so grateful to Abby that she gifted me an ARC (in exchange for an honest review) 🙏🏻
I pictured Rhett as stunningly handsome, chiseled and that kind of attractive where you keep finding yourself turning back to stare. At least, that's how I pictured him as I fell in love with When You’re Home by debut author Abby Millsaps, and believe me when I tell you, you will also picture him when you read this new book. I still think I can’t do this book justice, but I’m going to try…
Rhett and Tori have a complicated relationship, and it’s only complicated because of the terms Tori sets for them. She doesn’t have forever to give, and she loves him enough to want more for him; soul-crushing, I know. Just wait. 🤭 Rhett’s devotion to Tori and willingness to have what little of her he can hits a little too close to home for those of us who are also hopelessly (while still hopefully) in love. The words are perfectly chosen, the emotions and feelings are so real you can feel them in your bones, and the heat and angst are tangible - in a terribly wonderful way. 😏 I couldn’t put this book down. No seriously, I read it ‘cover to cover’ in one sitting. That’s the thing about Rhett and Tori’s relationship — you NEED to know what’s around the corner. Who that voice in Clinton’s belongs to, what exactly happens in the hot tub (or at the cabin), who that shadow in the backyard is with Jake, what happens if Rhett is faced with the reality of Tori’s stipulations and how on earth someone could keep a golden boy like Rhett at arm’s length - page turner is the understatement of the summer. 😳 The honest portrayal of the heartache, tenderness, angst and passion between Tori and Rhett is so accurate that it very well might shake you to your core if you’ve ever been in a situation like theirs. Even if you haven’t, you’re going to feel it. Don’t worry, it’s not all gut-wrenching heartbreak and passion-filled rendezvous (though there is PLENTY). The secondary characters you meet in Hampton, Ohio add a vibrancy and lightness to this book that make it feel authentic and plausible; you’ll want to be friends with Jake, adore Maddie and appreciate Tori’s friends for exactly what they bring to the table.
I genuinely cannot say enough about this new book, other than you’ll chuckle, cry, need a cold shower, shake your head (fucking Fielding) and likely want to read faster than you are capable of doing.
When you’re home is the debut book from @abbymillsaps and wow did she come out swinging!!! This is the first of 3( well 4 of you count a novella) in this series and you are going to be begging for more ! This is the story of Rhett & Tori they are childhood friends turned lovers turned complicated when tori is hit with tragedy that consumes her whole life at such a young age.. she is determined to keep Rhett at arms distance but not completely away because the chemistry with these two is just insane 🔥🔥 Rhett will do whatever she wishes including some crazy demands just to stay as close to her as possible!! This man is loyal, a smooth talker and completely head over heels for his girl🖤🥵 this story is full of angst, passion, heartbreak, redemption & so much love 🙌🏻 the push & pull between these two makes you wanna scream & swoon because you know they are made for each other but situations get complicated and it takes a life changing call to show these two that no matter what they need each other!! You also get some amazingggg side characters that you are going to love and be demanding their stories 🤣 now it does leave you on a cliff hanger but book two while you’re there comes out this month 🙌🏻 we just finished it and had to write Abby because gahhh the journey she is taking us on is ALL THE EMOTIONS!! We can’t believe this is her debut her writing is so great and we can’t wait for more !!
📖: Tori is dedicated and hard working. She helps support her father while finishing her degree and she has plans. Plans that don’t include falling for her best friend since eighth grade, Rhett. Rhett is about to finish school and is going to take over the family business. But he’s already in love with Tori and can’t imagine leaving her behind in their small hometown. They continue to see each other every time Rhett is home from college. But Tori won’t let it get any further than physical, she has good reasons too. But no one can keep true love at bay forever… right?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️: Can you say STEAMMMYYY! 😍 This book caught me from the first chapter. I quickly fell in love with Tori and Rhett. Abby Millsaps captures true heartache, longing, and love in every way. The way she portrays their relationship feels so real and honest. I was happy, sad, stressed, and mad all throughout the book. I even felt the angst that Rhett felt loving Tori but not being able to have her. So very many emotions all wrapped up in a sexy steamy romance… yes please! But be warned… the ending is 😳🥺😩😠
What a debut by Abby Millsaps! This new adult novel is full of angst, steam, love, and close friendships. Rhett and Tori have been in an on again off again relationship for 10 years and the last 3 have had unconventional rules put in place by Tori. Rhett goes along with these rules because he believes that is the only way he can be with Tori. This causes a lot of drama and heartache, but also emphasizes how much love they have for each other.
I was a bit conflicted during this book as it deals with infidelity, which I don’t love but this did end up getting resolved. Just a heads up as this may be a sensitive subject for people, it is also in the blurb.
Overall I was fully invested in Tori and Rhetts story, and I absolutely adored Jake and eventually Field. The friend and family support are strong throughout this book, and I adored the small town feel and Clinton’s Family Restaurant. This book ends with a smidgen of a cliffhanger, but I was already invested so I’ll continue regardless!
Special thanks to the author for giving me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
God I loved this book so much! It broke my heart and put it back together a few times, and I'm not even mad about it. Debut author Abby Millsaps shows she was destined to write with this amazing angst filled love story.
Tori and Rhett clearly belong together, you can feel it in your bones the depth of their love for one another. But they can only be together on one condition, and their relationship terms will definitely have you scratching your head.
I was so frustrated with Tori at the beginning of the book, I thought she was just being young and selfish. In actuality Tori is an extremely brave and strong woman. Once her reasoning is revealed you understand her point of view more, though it doesn't make it any less hard to see her fight against her pull to Rhett.
And where do I even start with Everhett Wheeler? I'm pretty certain if you look up "perfect guy", you would see his picture. He is thoughtful and funny and sexy, and absolutely adores Tori. He wants nothing more than to just be with her. The situation Rhett gets himself into isn't ideal, but he would do whatever she wanted to keep their arrangement.
Amazing side characters, especially the Clinton's crew round out this incredible first book of what I already know will be a series to remember. So grab a bloody mary and settle in for a beautiful read ❤
This book was an emotional rollercoaster for me, but I absolutely loved it! When you’re home is a lovely read - it has everything you could want from a new adult contemporary romance book: love, friendships, angst, a good amount of steam, a little bit of heartbreak and all of that ensured me being fully invested into Rhett and Tori‘s relationship!
I like Abby Millsap‘s writing style, however I would have preferred it being written in first-person-view (just my personal preference). I was conflicted about the infidelity in this book, I generally don’t like reading about that - but it works well for the storyline. So just a heads up… I loved the ending of the book! It was the perfect mix of happy ending and cliffhanger, which definitely leaves me wanting to read the next book in the series.
Special thanks to the author for sending me an ARC of the book! ☺️
When I first started reading When You're Home by Abby Millsaps I had mixed feelings. I was frustrated, conflicted and confused (not in a bad way in an 'I don't yet understand way') and found myself wanting to scream at everyone in the book, but the more I read and the more I got to know the characters the more I could NOT stop reading. . This book is angsty, sweet, frustrating, funny, morally grey at times, and spicy as heck (🌶️🔥🌶️🔥🌶️🔥), it definitely took me on an emotional rollercoaster ride. . The book is written in a way that enthralls you and makes you eager to see where things are going to go. . I LOVED the ending! It was the perfect mix of closure and cliffhanger. . I'm eager to see where the next book takes us!
This book had me adding another grade to my reviewing system. Oh the feels in this!! Tori and Rhett are so perfectly matched it hurts my heart. Rhett is the epitome of perfect book boyfriend 😍 he adores Tori and will be with her anyway she will allow him.
"He would spend all day buried inside this woman if she would let him."
Their love is so sexy and explosive. Yet Tori has her own reasons for keeping Rhett at arms length. Rhett would do anything to make Tori smile and be happy, even if that means masking his true feelings for her. He would rather go along with any arrangement she gives him than have to live in a world without her.
The small-town vibe had me imagining Hampton and picturing hanging out at Clinton's. Abby really captured the feeling of falling in love young and feeling the love grow as time moves on around us
YOU CANNOT DO THIS TO ME! I was invested in Rhett and Tori from the very beginning. And I’ll admit I had tears in my eyes more than once throughout the book. But how can you leave it like that?! I may have uttered a scream of frustration when it finished, purely because I NEED to know what happens next. You can guarantee I’ll be one of the first to buy the next book. Honestly, I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anybody. There’s heat, heartache, romance, angst too. Thank you Abby for a truly wonderful book. I don’t want to write more because I don’t want to include spoilers!
Brilliant story! I would happily read this book again. The relationship between Rhett and Tori is swoon worthy and you really get take. On the journey! I really hope there is a follow up book!!!
When You're Home is a very sweet and unique plot, with uncertainties that kept you engaged throughout the book. Tori and Rhett have been exes/friends/lovers for a long time. Its just there is some dark cloud around their arrangement. Rhett is undeniably in love with Tori, and Tori feels....something, however, life is preventing her from full embracing the relationship.
Rhett absolutely slays me and I just want to give Tori a hug while simultaneously flicking her on the nose. I loved the characters, the plot, and the spice. And can I say how I appreciated the ending of this? It left some of the future plot up to the reader's imagination ad I think it was the perfect ending for this plot. I definitely cried a few times, but the ending made it totally worth it. Congrats on your debut novel Abby!!
This book is a friends to lovers romance. Rhett has been in love with tori for years. Tori has her reasons she thinks she can’t be with rhett. So tori tries to come up with a plan so he could be happy and them not be together. You know how you think you have it all figured out but then your plan never works.. The emotions in this book you can feel yourself! I couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end. It is definitely a must read.
Such a wonderful debut book!! This book was angtsy AF, unexpectedly emotional and so freaking hot!!! I loved these characters even though I was shouting at them several times 🤣 this was so different than your normal small town romance. Unique in the storyline. Tori and Rhett had great chemistry. Great Job Abby!!!
This debut novel will have you in the characters from the very first page. This novel is hella steamy (hello sex scene in the prologue 🥵🔥), it's best friends to lovers leaving you feeling their deep connection with one another. The supporting characters such as Jake and Fielding were also a great addition to the story!
That all being said, I had a lot of issues with some aspects of Tori and Rhett's relationship. Rhett was the sweetest with how in love he was with Tori, but mostly, it felt like more of an unhealthy obsession. And Tori used Rhett's devotion to borderline emotionally abuse him. Adultery was also at play here and y'all know I ain't got time for that.
Despite these things, I am so impressed with the writing, no matter how crazy Tori and Rhett made me, I was so unbelievably invested in their story that I literally laid in bed thinking about them and how they were going to work it all out 😂 it ended on the perfect cliffhanger and I honestly can't wait to read the next one!
I had a hard time with this book. I was tense almost the entire read and torn between loving and hating Tori and Rhett’s relationship.
The writing was well done, and I definitely sympathized with some of the circumstances the main characters are faced with.
I’m also usually okay with reading about a messy couple.
But, my god, poor Chandler. For three years, he had two girlfriends. And the constant justification that ‘it’s not that serious’ becomes invalid to me when we find out they basically live together. Both Tori and Rhett are probably the most selfish characters I’ve ever read about. They give little to no regard for who they involve in their twisted coupling.
And the constant, SILLY whining from Tori. At least Rhett is somewhat reasonable and understands (occasionally) when he’s made a mistake. Tori finds fault with almost everything Rhett does and is the root cause of literally every fight. The premise of her wanting Rhett to have someone if something should happen to her would be incredibly humbling had it not also come with the stipulation that he come home every weekend to have sex with her, and then get upset when she remembers he has a girlfriend.
Then, when the actual girlfriend finally makes an appearance, she is villainized by almost every character! I don’t care if she’s supposed to come off as a little annoying. She honestly didn’t seem that annoying to me. She seemed like she was trying to make her relationship work! She did nothing wrong! And Tori expecting Rhett to dump her over the phone or send her home drunk is childish, ridiculous, and, again, SELFISH!
Other than that, this book was sadly realistic, so that earns points from me. It’s just incredibly depressing to know that there are people who truly act like these people out in the world.

This is book 1 of the Hampton Hearts series. The premiere novel for Abby Millshaps.
I first learned of this book via TikTok. I have had it on my TBR for quite some time, and REALLY wanted to like it. I pre-purchased the entire series, and honestly regret that choice with this one. Others clearly don't feel the same. I thought this storyline was going to be something else. About 20% of the way through, I realized this wasn't something I would be into. I kept going (hoping my opinion would change) to about the 70% mark before adding to my DNF list.
There are specific reasons why I don't like this - and I want to make that clear. Although these issues bother me - they may not for you. Others really enjoyed this, it was just not something I could personally get with.
1) Toxic emotional whiplash between main characters. As someone who has gone through very toxic relationships in the past - this was not cute to read/get through. Love doesn't look like this. Love doesn't play with your heart this hard. 2) Cheating - it simply is NOT ok when all parties are not consenting to that form of relationship. I like reverse harems, love triangles, etc. This one was full on cheating - to multiple partners - NO. 3) The excessive inner monologue about certain loss (cancer - and self morbid premature death thoughts).
This is a ex-lover/current best friends - with - benefits situationship. I thought this idea was unique, and was intrigued to read more - especially after a video Abby posted to her TikTok. I try to go into stories as blind as possible, so that I don't spoil them for myself, had I looked into this one a bit more, I might've realized before purchasing all of them.
Everhett and Victoria have always had a connection. It began when they were in 8th grade, and it never really stopped. When you love someone sometimes you think the best thing to do is set them free. That is Tori’s thoughts when she is realizes that something in her medical genetics will change who she is. The love she has for Rhett is so full that letting him go is protecting him the best way she can. Problem is, Rhett doesn’t agree with her.
This first book in the duet will tear at your heart strings in so many ways. The push and pull of loving someone and wanting to always love them is a struggle I think many feel at some point in their lives. For Rhett and Tori, they only have love for the other. It is all encompassing. However, Tori has pushed Rhett to find love outside of her because she feels that is the best thing for him. The power between them never dims and when everything comes to head for Tori the only person she wants is the one person she has pushed away. My heart broke so many times as these two tried to navigate the friendship that they had and did everything they could to hide the love in the background. The thing is, with love this powerful, it will prevail and my hope is that it truly does for them because they both deserve to have that and so much more together.
Ready for the next book now Abby. I need to know how these two manage to get through the medical stuff, but also that they continue on the path set at the end.
I've been trying to be a more adventurous reader lately, so I branched out from my usual genres in to contemporary romance. There was a lot of buzz on #bookstagram about this one and I gotta say, it lives up to the hype! I don't think I swooned quite as much as my friends on insta LOL, but I was still FULLY absorbed in to the colorful cast of characters and the drama of their every day lives!
Being from Ohio myself especially, the town of Hampton felt all too real and relatable. It wasn't long before I had a detailed map in my mind and a face for every name! Even the tertiary characters jumped off the page, and I was VERY excited to hear that the author is planning a sort of 'Hampton Universe' to allow every character their own story. I think it's amazing that a concept like that, usually reserved for 'big names' like Stephen King or Brett Easton Ellis, is being brought to fruition by a self-published author right from the start of her first book.
I won't give too much away, but ultimately I found Rhett and Tori to be frustratingly real in the BEST ways, and I'll be looking forward to Ms. Millsaps' next book!
Holy crap, I was not prepared for how emotional this book would make me. I know I was warned but, I really didn’t except it! There were actual tears at one point, I do have to admit. So, let that be part of my advice, this will probably make you cry but, you will enjoy the ride between Tori and Rhett. I love Rhett’s devotion to Tori, that is so willing to do what ever it takes, as long as she’s there in some way. Tori is interesting, I can’t imagine being a situation like that what J might do, I think decides what she thinks is best even though it’s complicated for all parties involved. Once you read it (or if you already have), you’ll know what I’m referring to. As with some people in real life, they were sometimes frustratingly stubborn and, I really wanted to just yell at them that they love each other and to stop being idiots lol Their journey by the end of this book is FULL of some pretty amazing highs and some excruciatingly low lows. Between miscommunications, angst filled moments, and unconditional love, their love story is not an easy one. I cannot wait to see what is in store for Rhett and Tori!
This book gave me mixed emotions. Although I enjoyed this authors writing style I must admit I found the first half of the book slow. The sex scenes were great but was it necessary for 20 chapters? Nothing significant happened to the characters and I felt the same amount of information gathered could have been done in less chapters.
Once the drama got going then I started to get into the story and enjoyed it more. However, there reason for my mixed emotions is the ‘arrangement’. I understand that this is the core of the story but why not just have Rhett move on then Tori seeing the error of her ways then tries to get him back? And if he loved Tori, then why not be open with Chandler and have an open relationship? Also, I can’t imagine any right minded person would put an ultimatum of needing to have a committed relationship in order to have a side affair. I mean really? And poor Chandler!! Was she that obtuse over three years?
In the end I still am curious about these characters and will consider reading the next in the series.
