The wolf within me wants to break free, run free, and be free. But that's not going to happen. Not now. Not ever.
Years of abuse, neglect, and downright torture at the hands of my uncle have stifled and shut down the shifter side of me. After all, nothing comes from unleashing the feral beast inside of me that's fighting for release.
But then, everything changes...
Suddenly, married by arrangement and trapped in a new pack with virtual strangers, my wolf within refuses to hold back. And Dayne, the alpha of the pack, doesn't make it easy to stifle my beast—or my desires. I'm clawing at the cage, hellbent on shifting.
Can I resist the sexy, cold-blooded alpha who tempts me or will I be caged inside myself forever?
Due to adult language, violence, and steamy scenes this book is recommended for 18+
I read this story in one sitting. I couldn't put it down. Ugh, the abuses Talis went through at the hands of her uncle (and her pack) in the beginning of this story were so heart wrenching and heart breaking. And then when her asshole uncle gives Talis to scary ass alpha Dayne, and Dayne treats her like a servant rather than a mate. For me, the angst was beautiful. I loved the jealous angst created by the other woman in Dayne's life, and the results that jealousy creates. The story was great and I'm now onto read the others in this series. This story is perfect for anyone who enjoys rejected mate type of stories. This story is definitely......
**cliffy alert- the first 2 books in the series follow this couple**
This combines two of my fav tropes… Arranged marriage and shifters. The book opens at the claiming/mating ceremony between Dayne and Talis where they’ve just met for the first time. It’s very clear from the start that Talis has been severely abused by her uncle and his pack.
I was sucked in immediately. Dayne is quite cold and there’s a whiff of potential OW drama, but I knew things weren’t as they seemed, and I couldn’t wait for answers. I really liked Talis and found her quite strong even though she was shaking and hiding behind her hair a lot.
What kept this from being a 5🌟, is the lack of progression of the plot. We are stagnant for a huge chunk of the book stuck in a pattern of… He pushes- she cowers, runs away to hide- avoids him for a couple of days-repeat.
Bottom Line- I really liked it but wish there was more forward movement. As I’m writing this, I’ve already read the second book, and IMO, this would’ve worked a lot better as one book without all the repetitive parts. It’s still a solid read and free with KU.
Physically and emotionally abused by her uncle, the alpha, and her pack since the death of her parents Talis suddenly finds herself mated to an alpha known as the Cold-Blooded Alpha after Dayne kills his entire family.
Hopes that her home in her new pack will be better are quickly dashed when her new mate treats her much like her Uncle did. Though her new pack treats her much better.
Talis is a strong woman despite being beaten down by her uncle for years. I wish she'd stood up to Dayne more. If she had she might not have had to fight to keep her wolf in check so much. It irked me that it was never cleared up exactly who Savannah is to Dayne.
I intensely disliked Dayne for most of the book. The way he humiliated Talis, used her, and otherwise treated her just made me hate him up until literally the last chapter when he finally started to open up to her.
This is a VERY slow burn. In fact I'd go so far as to say there is a couple instances of sex, but no romance whatsoever in the entire book. When things finally start to look like they might go in that direction I was blindsided by a totally unexpected cliffhanger ending. In fact it was so sudden I thought the end of the book didn't download with the rest of it. To make it more bizarre the author left no note to the readers that the story would continue in a second book. I knew it was a series, but I thought it was a new couple in each new book. Apparently not. In all honesty the sudden cliffhanger left me ticked enough to mark my rating a 2 star instead of the original 3 star I'd intended.
The book is only in Talis's POV. The angst level is medium.
3.5* Been a while since I read this one but I know I liked it even though it's a cliffhanger. The sequel - I just could not get into it. The H's the 'cold-blooded alpha' while the 'hot-blooded alpha' in the sequel alludes to the h.
I'm going to sound like a presidential candidate: I liked this. And I didn't. Too wishy washy, right?
Ok, I think the most important thing to know going in is that Cold Blooded Alpha is the first half of a bully romance duology and it's told in the FMC's POV. I love bully romances (no shame in my game) but exclusively reading from the victim's perspective is...a rough emotional experience. Like, using sandpaper as an exfoliant rough. I can definitely see the advantages of using this structure though. By putting us so close to the female victim, our understanding of the relationship is restricted and we're also in the dark about whether the bully is turned on or just out of his mind, which adds incredible tension to the story. It's a lot more interesting if we're kept guessing alongside the FMC (The Hating Game is the ultimate example of this).
However, it can still feel like being put through a meat grinder when readers are confined beside a character who is constantly being disempowered. To minimize the discomfort, I think it's helpful if the victim is highly empowered to begin with (Just Drop Out by J. Bree) or discovers power through a disempowering relationship (The Bully by Sophie Lark). Cold Blooded Alpha is clearly aiming for the latter and fell short, for me.
Before she ever lays eyes on her mate, the FMC has been deeply traumatized by years of physical and psychological abuse, sexual harassment and the ever-looming threat of sexual assault, and group bullying. The MMC whisks her out of that environment through an arranged marriage, only to continue to isolate, humiliate, and intimidate her himself. As I mentioned above, this book is suggesting that his bullying is curative rather than punitive: he's antagonizing her into confidence. And I think there's a way this could've worked. After all, it's entirely possible that a traumatized person might be encouraged or excited by an antagonistic relationship with someone who felt fundamentally safe, particularly if their traumatizing environment didn't permit antagonism (there are A LOT of dark romances built on this concept). But that isn't what happens here. The FMC doesn't feel encouraged or excited, only further isolated, humiliated and intimidated, and the reader is right beside her -- and only her -- for all of it. Non-stop meat grinder.
So, why three stars? I don't quite know how to explain, but I liked reading this book. The writing was a breeze. I wanted to know the meat grinder's mysteries, like what the hell was up with the alpha bully and why he'd rescued our girl. I loved the depiction of trauma, it felt much more realistic and honest than other books dealing with the same subject matter (looking at you, Shadow Beast Shifters). There weren't any evil "other girls" or sex rivals, which I appreciated, and the sex scenes were hot, if somewhat incongruous: the D/s vibe is definitely A Choice here.
Bottom line: Cold Blooded Alpha is a 500-level bully romance, don't sign up if you haven't completed the necessary prerequisites.
The h has been abused for years and clearly, the H is trying to help her, all without words. She wouldn't have believed him anyway. He's strong and I thought he needed to talk to her earlier. Liked it.
I think this book would fall under the "bully hero" genre that is so popular lately. Talis, has been abused by her Uncle, the Alpha, for years and he arranges for her to marry Dayne who has a reputation as a cold-blooded killer.
The story is so very full of the heroine's misery and angst. I don't know what is wrong with me that I just loved reading about that. It leaped off the page. The H is very cold to her and doesn't talk to her much. His treatment is very cold and she worries that her wolf (who she has kept behind a cage) will burst out and kill someone.
The book does have some weak spots. I don't want to be too spoilery about the H's motivations. I picked up on things pretty quickly. I thought he was being pretty stupid about how he treated the h, but it advanced the plot. There was also a lot of back and forth, he pushes, she pulls away, he pushes, she gets pissed but pulls away, on repeat. We also never get the H's POV so we don't know what he is thinking unless he tells us. I got frustrated with the amount of conversation *not* happening between the H/h.
I do think the UST was pretty good and the h/H were both very appealing characters. For a KU shifter book, I read it all day and really enjoyed it. It does end on a cliffhanger, but the next book is already out so I picked it up and will let you know what I think.
My rating system: 5 stars - Absolutely loved it! I would definitely read again anytime! 4 stars - Really liked it! Will most likely read again sometime. 3 stars - Liked it. Glad I read it but probably won't read again. 2 stars - Didn't like it. Glad I'm done with the book and I'll never read it again. 1 star - Very rare rating. Absolutely hated the book. Will never read again and I'll probably burn any copies come across.
This book is basically porn without plot. And not even good spice lol.
Talis is an orphan raised by her abusive uncle who is the alpha of her pack. He had spent her life abusing her, humiliating her, and forcing her to be the lowest and most submissive member of her pack. She is married off for unknown reasons to an alpha of another pack, Dayne. That's literally the first 5 pages of the book and those pages contain the most plot of the whole thing! There is NO chemistry between the main characters!
Dayne is a jerk the entire book. I love a trope with a broody and possessive male, but he's just an asshole. He doesn't abuse her but he continually humiliates and belittles her. She is terrified of him at first but realizes he isn't going to hurt her, at least not physically, so she relaxes some.
The rest of the book is basically her doing her best to avoid him after he keeps belittling her and keeping her submissive. There are moments of sexual tension every so often, and then they have sex after she innocently talks to a grocery store employee and Dayne has to stake his claim 🙄 they barely even talk to each other the entire book.
We find out towards the end that she was mated to Dayne because he glimpsed her 5 years ago and "wanted her" and finally tracked her down. Don't know what he gave to her uncle in exchange for her but it's heavily implied that she wasn't given to him for free.
We also find out that the reason Dayne is such a domineering jerk to her the entire book is because he sees that she is actually an alpha, not a submissive, on the inside. He kept humiliating her and emotionally abusing her and pushing her because he wanted her to push back and realize that she doesn't want to submit. Well jerk, she already knew that! He could have been encouraging and empowering to help her find her strength and herself, but no, he continues dishing out more of the trauma that she has already been subjected to for the majority of her life.
The book ends on a cliffhanger but I will not be continuing the series.

I admit to loving the occasional shifter romance. This is actually above the average for me. It’s more serious than the lovingly goofy Coldbreath Love Potion For the Alpha which I adore.
More juicy “alpha” than Loving the Tiger which while I enjoyed it was a little more grim than this one.
I was sucked quickly into the story, thought the alpha Dayne was pretty cool as well as the rarely seen secondary characters such as Luka. I had no problem with minimal secondary characters as it allowed the story to focus mostly on Dayne and Talis and let’s face it, that’s what we want. Although it’s all told from Talis’ point of view, the author does a great job of allowing the reader to see and interpret what Dayne was doing. I personally love a single, first person perspective because when it’s done right, it’s awesome. I think the reason many people don’t like it is because it’s often done wrong. For me, when I think it’s done right, you see the other characters and what they do through the first person point of view. It doesn’t matter if the main character interprets what the others are doing correctly. The point is that as the reader, we can interpret what they’re doing which makes it rewarding when (if) we find out we’re correct. In this, I loved seeing Dayne passively antagonize Talis which we suspect is to force her to shift. I personally enjoyed his cool and quiet ways of asserting his dominance to rile her.
The only thing is that this ends on a really sudden cliffhanger. In fact, it ended so quickly I think I fell off the edge of the cliff. I had to backtrack to see if I missed a page, a paragraph or a sentence. I mean, it was sudden. On to the next to see if it holds up as well…
06/18/24 Re-read: I forgot how much fun this book was. The melodrama, the possessiveness, I loved how the MMC did all those things to make her angry just waiting for her to explode...
At the beginning of the book, Tallis is being forced to mate with Alpha Dayne in front of her pack. So it starts with a dub-con right off the bat.
Her uncle was abusive and had the whole pack physically abuse her too. When she goes with Dayne to his pack, Dayne continues the emotional abuse, not so much physical abuse, but psychological abuse and humiliation. She must be starved for affection because she enjoys it when they fuck. But they have no relationship and hardly see each other outside the bedroom. When they do see each other, he's abusive. This goes on for the ENTIRE book.
It's all from Tallis' POV so we have no reason to like Dayne at all, because we don't get his perspective. Until the end, when he reveals his "reason" for abusing her was Whatever. I didn't think it made any sense.
This dude treated his mate like a piece of dog shit under his shoe, in front of his entire pack, (who I think would have lost respect for him for acting like that), just to Like, that's it. That's the whole book.
There is no romance at all, just "body betrayed me" fucking, and abuse.
And she says she starts falling in love with him when he makes her walk 2 hours up a trail to view the Rocky Mountains. Because they live near the mountains. That's it. That's why she "loves" him. It's a really nice view, but still, he didn't do anything loveable.
And lastly, I just want to point out that at the end of the book he calls her wolf "beautiful," but never said she was beautiful, so I felt he was more physically attracted to a wolf than a person. That was weird, too. Like, he had more reaction to seeing the wolf, than to seeing her.
I'm glad he wanted to rescue her from her uncle, but I was actually sad for her that she ended up mated for life to this idiot.
CLIFF HANGER i wish I'd read the reviews, i never would have bought this if I'd known it was a cliff hanger! Started with good premise, heroine is mated off by evil uncle and joins a new pack, will her life be better or worse. Then nothing happens, NOTHING, until the end its a whole lot of her trying to bury her wolf and him trying to provoke her out. Then major cliff hanger and book two is £3.99, i don't think i cared enough about the characters to even bother as it's a lot of money for a story that might be another whole lot off nothing.
2/21/25 re-read. Due to a plot point this book is my ch better on the initial read - the below review stands but mostly for the first read through 😉
4.75 rejection-smut Doritos stars. 4/28/23 This book was spraying-the-whipped-cream-straight-into-the-mouth good! Nothing earth shattering here peeps. Just a smutty departure from reality with just a dash of pang-filled-darts to richen the palette. Hahaha. I’m already more than halfway through the next book. 🤓
Cliffhanger... and you know what? I don't even care. I was really loving this book.
You know pretty much from the start that there is more that meets the eye with Dayne. I never saw him as a bully, and even though he seemed cold, I just kept thinking that there was something else happening. He was pushing Talis. And because of this I never wanted to stop reading. I devoured this book waiting to see the real Dayne, and just as you get to the end you get to see him. So I'm here for it. I like that this was told at a moderate pace and wasn't rushed.
I really think a companion book told from Dayne's POV would be delicious. I would LOVE to read all of this from his side, because there is clearly more than we know even now. He's been pretty closed off and distant when it comes to giving information, even if he has tried to get close to Talis, she was right at the end when she said he wants her to share but that he doesn't share anything with her.
When I started reading, I thought this was going to be a rejected-mates story, but it isn't. I also don't fully understand why it's a "bully" romance -- the hero makes some choices that are questionable, but as a reader, I understood why he was acting the way he did (and I was frustrated that the heroine didn't catch on sooner).
This one also ends in a cliffhanger, and the second book is pretty different in tone than this one. There's references to past abuse here, but the second book has some pretty horrible things happen in the present.
I had such mixed feelings about this. Because I really really enjoyed this, I just love books about alphas, mates and packs. So for that, I loved it. 💖
But I definitely wasn't sure about Dayne (H). He was cruel to Talis (h) and afterwards I understood why, what he was trying to do. But there was other ways to go about this, none of what he did was needed. So for that, I EXTREMELY disliked him. 🙄
However I'm interested to continue to the next book as their story ended in a dreadful cliffhanger. ✨️👋
Ugh this was sooooooo good like woooowww. I was sooo enthralled with this like I had to keep reading to see what happened next. The charcaters are so good and the romance was great! And the plot was also really good. Can’t wait to read book 2!
I really enjoyed this, I’ve been trying to find good KU titles that have a heroine with a background or power, but a lot of the one’s that I’ve found just don’t know how to say without making the heroine out to be conceited (or at least that’s how it feels). This still has a heroine who doesn’t know her own power, but it’s written in a way that is intriguing. I am looking forward to the next one and will be checking out more from this author soon!
I was a little hesitant at first like this book, it took a long time for the plot to develop. But it was a very well written book. I would definitely recommend
Dnf. Reads like a YA wattpad story. The hero is a young alpha and leader of a pack of youngsters(one is a model) who wear designer clothes 👀. Yet, he has a reputation for being brutal, not that we see any evidence of that. There's no chemistry between the MC's and the hero embarrasses the heroine on multiple occasions e.g. making her sit on the floor by his feet and then pushing her head onto the floor while he's conducting a pack meeting. But she seems to forget about it by the next day because he's hot? That's the only reason I can think of because he has no personality. All this behaviour is okay though because I'm sure it's all leading to him wanting to get her to finally shift. Forget that the humiliating her might have backfired and pushed her over the edge. 🙄
The plot is kind of juvenile and after cringing so much I finally decided to give up.
