"You have a lifetime of me all to yourself."
"Not enough," he said as his lips found hers. "Never enough."
This was one of the easiest 5-star ratings I’ve given so far this year. Hale and Tara’s story captivated me from the start, and it was one of those amazingly satisfying happily ever afters. Kate Meader always manages to spin her tale in a way that teleports you into the book and makes you feel like you’re part of the story – and this was no exception.
"No guy would look at her and think: I hope to hold hands with you in our rocking chairs."
My heart absolutely broke for Tara. She’s so much more than what she shows the world, but she needs to put on a mask for others. So she pretends to be a golddigger, an airhead, someone who cares only about money and has no heart. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The way she thinks about herself, her insecurities and self-doubt, her need to belong very much hit home for me, and I could absolutely relate to her.
"Don’t do this to me, General. Don’t make me fall for you."
How can I describe Hale without using the word ‘perfect’? I can’t. OK, he seems conceited, arrogant, and needs to come off his high horse, but that’s also a mask he’s putting on. He’s such a wonderful guy, so considerate, so kind, and so attentive. The combo of sweet, hot, sexy, and swoony will do you in. I would have fallen for him for sure. Well, to be fair, I sort of did.
"When had she made the switch from ‘you irritate the fuck out of me’ to ‘please fuck the irritation out of me’?"
First impressions aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Tara annoyed me a bit. She’s looking to get married to a hunky hockey player who can provide for her while also being easy on the eyes. That seems shallow, right? What you don’t see is that she has a reason for that, and all her life she’s been told she’s just a pretty face. She believes it too, and it will take someone special to show her how deserving of real happiness she truly is.
Cue Hale. The new GM, older, wiser, experienced. It’s unlikely these two would get together, but the chemistry between them is off the charts. Loved the tension, the longing, the looks – and one very hot airplane bathroom scene.
"Look at me like that forever. Like I would hang the moon for you. Because I just fucking might."
Tara is hired to help rehabilitate one of the player’s reputation, as his fake girlfriend. That should be easy enough, but that means spending more time around the team’s GM. The guy who knows what her favorite drink is, and how she takes her coffee. The guy who sees her as a bimbo, like everyone else does, until he takes the time to scratch beneath the surface to see the real her. He’s the only one who does.
"Remind me of the prize again?"
"This old heart of mine."
"It might be too valuable."
"Ain’t worth a damn without the woman who owns it."
The more they get to know each other, the better they fit, and the deeper they fall. However, they both feel undeserving. Surely, he’s not right for her, and she’s not right for him. Right? She’s not suitable because he deserves more, he’s not enough because she could have so much better. Real happiness is staring them in the face and I wanted to push them together so much.
For me, it was the little things. How they open up to each other, the moments they share, how clueless they are. It was so satisfying, and so infuriating at the same time.
"I knew you were the one I wanted, the one I dreamed of and hoped for, before I even met you."
What is ‘suitable’? What do you ‘deserve’? Are you less ‘deserving’ of happiness because you may not be ‘right’ for someone? By the way, what makes you ‘right’ anyway?
Honestly – who cares? Tara and Hale show us that the only thing that matters is love. When there’s love between two people, the real kind, they’ll always be right for each other. They’ll always be suitable and deserving. And even if it takes a bit to get there, it will all fall into place eventually.
Jock Wanted? GM Wanted. No jock ever stood a chance against Hale.
Awesome book, absolutely loved it!
