Bunny Kong

Rate this book
Sitting by the roadside, awaiting the arrival of the recovery service to help with his broken-down car, Martin decides to tell his young boys about a murderous six foot rabbit called "Bunny Kong". It was supposed to be a harmless tale to put them off from wanting a pet rabbit; something the boys suddenly decided they "must have" after watching the bunnies playing in the nearby field. Unfortunately for Martin, he didn't realise that not only was Bunny Kong very real but, worse than that, they were in his territory...

When author Matt Shaw was about six years old, he found himself stranded by the side of the road after his dad's car broke down. In the countryside, the family played in the fields whilst they waited for help to come and it was here that Matt's father told him about BUNNY KONG. Roughly thirty-four years later, Matt Shaw decided to build upon his father's story...

Biography

MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.

Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.

This is extremely short, which somehow wasn’t an issue and its brevity worked out rather well. There were some plot holes, and the story ‘hopped’ (Yeah, you get it.) around quite a bit. You could tell where it was all headed, and I appreciated the personal touches that Shaw put into this. I have an older sibling who did similar things to me growing up, which probably contributed to my PTSD, but it’s always nice to see someone else’s experiences. Gosh, thinking back, my sister convinced me there was a werewolf hiding behind the furnace, wall dwelling trolls that would steal my breath while I slept, killer klowns living in the little spaceships on my wallpaper, my stuffed animals could come alive at any moment, and she’d wake me up in the middle of the night to tell me something is in the house, and we needed to hide. Does anyone wonder why I don’t sleep much these days?! Back to the book, there is not much violence, surprising for a Matt Shaw book, and the story is just a fun little ride into the mind of a younger sibling who has a very active imagination. A good ole’ fashioned harmless, creepy, ‘hare-raising’ tale. Or was it? Bunny Kong kept making me think of the rabbit from that one segment from The Twilight Zone movie with little Anthony. I feel like I need a joke to close here….ok rabbits….hm…..let’s try this one out…what do rabbits say before they eat? Lettuce pray. How was that? Did it at least make you chuckle?

I would reread this simply for Matt Shaw trash-talking his brother lmaao

"As a side note, I feel like I should point out now that I never did get a rabbit as a pet. My brother did and he was most distraught when a fox got into its hutch and took its little rabbit head off. Where was your Bunny Kong then?"

Why four stars????

I always get a kick out of Matt Shaw! He is quite the character and writer.

Although I enjoyed the story, there was one BIG glaring error that I kept coming back to….

The story begins with “sometime in the 1980s” and then the character references the movie “Scream”. Um…. Unless I completely missed something here, the first Scream movie came out in 1996. We can’t even blame this on Stephen, as an unreliable narrator of the Bunny Kong mythology, as it would mean his own timeline would have to be circa 1996-1997. That doesn’t work either because he later describes the tow-truck driver listening to Richard Marx and Prince, whose songs hit the charts back in 1989 (7 years before Scream). Matt Shaw had to be at fault on those timelines rather than his characters!!!

Although this was a quick, fun story, I have another plot hole that bothered me. Did the mom really ask about the bathroom or not? If she did, what was the point of the tow-truck driver not telling her? If it was just part of Stephen’s attempt to torture his younger brother, what was the point of its inclusion? Just to make the driver creepy? To me, this was distracting as it was never dealt with. You could have easily had the parents race away from Bunny Kong to find something utterly horrible in the bathroom. Would have made way more sense to include this tidbit.

I hate to say it, but if I look at my own family growing up, I was a little s**t like Stephen scaring my three younger brothers half to death with awful urban legends and creative horror stories and then locking them in the fruit cellar while making scary noises. Sigh… those were the good old days!

“Bunny Kong hates humans and how they cage up his friends. He hunts down those who have pet rabbits and eats them.”

The narrative main character is Matt (8). We follow his family on a road trip: brother Stephen (12) and parents Martin and Julie.

When the foursome have car trouble and end up stranded, Martin tells the boys the story of Bunny Kong: “a six foot rabbit that stalked the countryside, walking on its hind legs.” He has glowing red eyes and razor-sharp teeth, too.

Cool introduction. I always love hearing the origins and motivations for Matt’s stories.

Cassandra and John experience a similar breakdown. After waiting an hour, John decides to try to brave it and reach the nearest town. Cassandra isn’t exactly dressed for a hike over rough terrain.

The narrative is all over the place—in a fun way.

Giles uses “altered” food to get his chickens to grow bigger. They produce huge, delicious eggs.

The barn.

The humor—and the author’s self-awareness throughout—add to the experience.

Can’t say a whole lot without spoiling. Creative. Not the usual fare from Matt—and that is a great thing.

Had to read, watership down terrified me

I actually prefer Matt Shaws less gory work so I loved this. Watership down still scares me to this day, both film and book so had to read this. Was really good fun, might read it to the kids at easter.
