Tony Buzan was an English author, educational consultant, and pioneer of the mind mapping technique, which he developed to enhance learning, creativity, and memory. Born in Middlesex in 1942, he studied psychology, English, mathematics, and science at the University of British Columbia and later became a graduate student at Simon Fraser University, where he served as the inaugural president of the student society. Buzan was a strong advocate for mental literacy and radiant thinking, drawing inspiration from figures like Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein. He authored or co-authored over 80 books, including the bestselling Use Your Head, The Mind Map Book, and The Speed Reading Book, and gained international recognition through his 1970s BBC series Use Your Head. Buzan co-founded the World Memory Championships, the Mind Sports Olympiad, and the Brain Trust Charity. His legacy lives on through his books, seminars, and iMindMap software.

The most needed book for every student. In a very brief form, it introduces all the techniques and methods of mastering memory and study. The Mind Mapping that is introduced in this book is a really interesting and effective technique. Moreover, the book is written in a very detailed but short and clear language. It is a must-read for every student.
I felt it was somewhat similar to Use your head by Tony Buzan himself. Probably a little elaborate. So will suggest either to read this or Use your head.
Some good advice for students like- BOST method, speed reading and mind-mapping. They are really helpful.
But as a student of Science, I believe, the best learning happens in laboratory and through deep observation of nature. Buzan totally forgot it to mention.
Fundamental and important principles of reading, learning and remembering that everyone should read (not only students). Having these principles and work flow as a base before starting school or only other reading will make a considerable difference in learning and performance going forward. The book is divided into three major topics; speed-reading, mind maps and remembering techniques.
Main takeaways; -Speed-reading: You will learn and remember more while reading faster. Based on how the brain is constructed start by getting an overview of the book (content and quick look through) before actually starting to read. Second make a mind map of what you already know and what you would like to learn from the book to get the right setting. Set an approximate time frame with pauses when you read to remember more. Summarize with mind map after read. Repeat after a day, week, month, 6 months to remember long-term. -Mind map: Will activate also the right half of the brain with illustrations, colors and pictures. Easier to remember, repeat, change and work from then regular text notes. Detailed description included in the book.
A short book which sticks to the point and delivers some good advice on study techniques. Near all the text was fluff-free and useful information excluding the chapter on speed reading.
The speed reading section was disappointing as no real practical advice was given to the reader other than saying "avoid regression". Using your peripheral vision is mentioned to aid in speed but no methods of engaging it usefully are given. Buzan also mentions guided reading techniques where you are reading two lines at a time but provides no instruction on how to transition from reading one line slowly to suddenly reading multiple lines at the same time with increased speed.
It's such a great self-help book, especially the Mind Maps.
I got to know about Mind Maps like more than a decade ago but I have never ever taken it seriously. It is an undeniable fact that this can save you heaps of time and effort after you master the Mind Maps and this kind of mastery is not a task achieved just by reading the book but by practicing.
I have ignored this Mind Maps skill until now, mainly because of the fear of strenuous brain workout due to my laziness when it comes to mind-working and brainstorming. A decade has passed and I just realized how this has taken its toll on me. My academic career has always been a rough road and has no sign of being smoothed out.
I think everyone who comes in contact with this book should make good use of it by putting the theory into practice as soon as they can.
My goal is to utilize these great skills to try to remember what I read from difficult books like Living History (Hillary Rodham Clinton).
God bless you, Tony buzan!
Was a very interesting read for me. Some of what is discussed, I did when I was younger. Mind mapping is a technique is something I did unknowingly as a kid, but was told to stop and take good notes instead. Wish I didn’t listen and continued doodling my notes. Anyways, will need to read it again to get a more in depth understanding of the techniques discussed. Overall, I think it’s a good read, anyone can benefit from this. Authors offer logical explanations, which is important for me.
Very interesting book, it's well summarized, getting directly to the point, it gives us how we should read books, and how we could enhance our speed in reading, without loosing comprehension.
Also, midmapping is a good way to add to speed reading, to improve memory and creativity, by developping how we choose the right key word to put in our map, which could summarize all the idea.
My first introduction to Speed reading, mind map and memory techniques. Tony buzan willchange your life. You can be one of the top student if not the best if you follow his advices. Also, refer to his other books Separately WRITTEN on speed reading, mind maps and memory techniques.
Preview book before starting reading it Formulate the study / reading goal before starting reading the book When previewing the book, skip difficult fragments to come back to them later We remember better the information in the beginning and at the end We remember better things that are linked We remember better the unique things We forget 80% of information after 24 hours Repeat shortly after learning, and then after 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 to 6 months Take a break every 30 minutes The faster we read, the better we focus
A must-read for anyone who has to juggle between projects, studies and work. Have you ever wondered how a school subject or a small work project fits into the big picture? Well, you found your answer. The Mind-mapping and BOST methods are successfully applicable in your school work, career and personal life. They help you unleash your imagination and creativity, while helping you to not feel bad or stupid when you have a huge amount of books and work piled up!
Has helped improve my study techniques. The way mind maps were used in my school didn't help and just confused me so I'm glad I read this book and now know how to use them effectively.
