Lady Emma Brooksbank is not like most girls in Society. She would rather be practicing archery than embroidering, and she has given up on the ridiculous notion of matrimony. She’d sooner become a spinster than have her life controlled by a man, especially one as infuriating as Lord Preston.
After Isaac, Lord Preston, takes over managing his family’s estates, he discovers a secret about his disowned sister that his father has managed to keep hidden for years. Isaac vows to do right by his sister, but his father stands in the way of every decision he makes.
When Isaac asks her for a favor, Emma reluctantly agrees, hoping it will benefit them both. What she doesn’t anticipate is enjoying, and even looking forward to, each moment she spends with the maddening lord. As Emma’s carefully constructed walls come down, she must face her own fears and decide what true love is worth.
As the sixth novel in this series by author Laura Beers, this story concludes the Proper Regency Matchmakers series. This is a light-hearted series set in the Regency period.
Laura Beers is an award-winning author. She attended Brigham Young University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. She can't sing, doesn't dance and loves naps.
Laura lives in Utah with her husband, three kids, and her dysfunctional dog. When not writing regency romance, she loves waterskiing, hiking, and drinking Dr Pepper.
There are days that I need an escape read. Refining Lord Preston is perfect for the days that you need to relax and get lost in a book.
Lady Emma is certain that she NEVER wants to marry. She relished the thought of never losing her independence to the control of a husband. She doesn't want someone to tell her to give up archery or any of her other pursuits. She is not interested in embroidery, musical performance, or improving her dancing ability in the ballroom. She is content.
Her nemsis is Lordd Preston. He is infuriating. He is her greatest competition in archery and is too full of himself to be taken seriously. She will never consider him as a potential suitor. Until... she realizes that he isn't as bad as he thought and he does have two adorable nieces who need love and compassion.
You have to love the enemies to lovers trope because it can be a lot of fun. This story is a lot of fun. I enjoyed every moment reading it. The characters are fun, the story engaging, and the plot is well done. I definitely recommend this one to everyone.

I am sorry to see the series end. Refining Lord Preston was and Excellent story. One of my favorites of this series.
I had been waiting for Lady Emma Brooksbank story. She is coupled off with Lord Isaac Earl of Preston. They make a lovely couple. I enjoyed their story.
"Love is a lifelong commitment, but it has the potential to change your life for the better."
Lady Emma Brooksbank isn't your ordinary beautiful young lady with an ample dowry. She would much rather be practicing her archery than mingling with vain and pretentious lords. To keep her mother from constantly hounding her about finding a husband Emma tells her mother that she's hired the services of Lady Berkshire (a well-known matchmaker), but it's not true.
Meanwhile, Lord Isaac Preston is being pressured by his father to find a wife. Isaac wants a love match but his father says that's not a necessity. To appease his father, Isaac hires Lady Berkshire to help him find a match. While going through the estate books Isaac comes across a monthly payment to a woman and finds out it has to do with his sister who was disowned years before.
I love an good enemies to lovers story and Emma and Isaac were definitely enemies. At least from Emma's point of view, as she found him infuriating. I loved how Emma stood her ground about not wanting to be married to just anyone--she'd rather have been a spinster than marry someone who wasn't going to be loyal to her. I loved how well she got along with Tabitha and Grace.
Isaac is a good man who wants to do the right thing. I like that he never saw Emma as an enemy and that he asked for her help when he desperately needed advice and help with the girls. I was happy to see Lady Berkshire again as she was in the first book of this series. How sneaky was she to pair Isaac and Emma together? Love, love, love the epilogue. This is a wonderful way to end this series. Each book can be read by itself but I think it's more fun to read them in order as we get to see some of the previous characters in the later books.
I received a complimentary copy for review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Wonderful conclusion to this fun Proper Regency Matchmaker's Series. I loved that our original matchmaker Lady Berkshire from Book 1 was involved in this story. Each story in this series could work fine as a stand alone but it is so much fun to read the other books in the series to get the whole picture. This last book involves Lady Emma Brooksbank who is the sister of Roswell Brooksbank, the Marquess of Bideford and Lord Charles Brooksbank. Both brothers have had their own stories in this series.
Lady Emma Brooksbank's mother wants her to marry and is making her life miserable pestering her. Emma would rather be practicing her archery so that she can beat her rival Lord Preston at the next archery competition. Not only does he infuriate her but she finds him the typical man that she refuses to make a match with.
Isaac, Lord Preston, has taken over managing the family's estates and has discovered that his estranged sister he believed was in America has died leaving behind two daughters. Despite his father's fierce objections, he determines to find the daughters and do right by his sister. Finding that he needs help with this objective, he asks Lady Emma to assist him.
Lord Preston wants to stop the badgering from his father to get married so he decides to ask Lady Berkshire to assist him in finding a match. Lady Berkshire will only agree if Lady Emma comes with him to meet with her. Lady Emma agrees only so that she can convince her mother that she is seriously pursuing a husband.
I loved watching these two go from being rivals to friends and with all of the time they were spending together- there may be an opportunity for much more.
I received a copy of this book from the author and this is my honest unbiased review.
Refining Lord Preston is a nineteenth-century romance story with an enemies-to-lovers theme. Laura Beers places her characters in a situation not unlike many Jane Austen novels. Lady Emma Brooksbank is a twenty-two-year-old woman who is uninterested in marriage after she developed unrequited feelings for a man who married another young lady. She enjoys archery and her romantic freedom, even though her mother pressures her to wed. Isaac Cameron, the Lord of Preston, is Emma’s rival in archery, often challenging her to do better. He succumbs to his father’s request that he marry, and he seeks the help of Lady Kate Berkshire, a renowned matchmaker. Lady Berkshire agrees to take him on as a client if Emma joins her classes, too. Lord Preston and Emma end up in classes where they are forced to spend time together and understand one another better. Even though he has a strained relationship with Emma, Lord Preston asks her to help him win the affection of his two nieces, who he just met and rescued from a workhouse. Refining Lord Preston is an enjoyable book with romance, drama, and a little humor in the pages as the characters develop feelings that they weren’t aware were there all along. Laura Beers uses the terminology of the time without bogging down the reader with elegant, little-known words and phrases. I didn’t know about “Bow Street Runners” or “bluestockings” until I read this story and looked up their meanings. The writing was modern, but the setting of the novel was clear in the viewpoints of the men and women throughout the story, making the book highly readable.
This was a fun book. I liked how Emma and Isaac didn’t like each other at the beginning but as they went to the matchmaker and spent time together they realized they would be a good match. I liked the banter between these characters and how competitive they were with each other. It was a fun book and series to read. I thought the characters were fun and that the story was well written.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Oh I loved this book and truly enjoyed the entire series! It’s a wonderful matchmaker series that is development in each story for each character. I really enjoyed how defiant Emma and Lord Preston both were to each other but then developed an unlikely friendship. This is a series that you do not want to put down! Excellent story telling!

This was a wonderful way to end this series! Emma and Isaac are perfect for each other. They are well developed as characters and have such a sweet love story.
A heartfelt story that will pull at your heartstrings. Isaac and Emma don't even realize they are right for each other. Not until they are set up with a matchmaker. Emma goes as a favor to Isaac even though he vexes her. He also asks Emma to help him win his nieces trust. Those poor little girls and what they went through made me want to cry. A decision regarding his nieces will put him at odds with Emma and his nieces. He will have to make things right in order to win Emma's love.
I loved the chemistry between Emma and Isaac. You could see they wanted to be friends more than enemies. The story flowed well to keep you entertained and wanting to know how this was going to work. Their banter back and forth was quite funny and rewarding.
Wonderful regency romance! The story is sweet, witty and engaging. The matchmaker plot is always interesting, but I also loved the addition of saving the children. The characters are so competitive, making the banter between them enchanting. A clean wholesome romance, will please a variety of readers. Can be read as a standalone, even though former characters make appearances. I would suggest reading them all, because they are so good.
I’ve loved all the books in this series, and this was a wonderful addition! I really enjoyed the witty banter between Lady Emma and Lord Preston. They both find each other infuriating until they end up spending a little more time together. If you enjoy a sweet regency romance, this is for you!
Oh so very, very good! Wow! This book will keep you engrossed to the end. I found myself thinking, I know where this is going and then a plot twist appeared. Add to that a large dose of quick wit and humor sprinkled throughout the book and you really don’t want to put it down. The characters are engaging and the plot keeps you wondering what will happen next. This is a book I can highly recommend. Emma is the sister of a marquess with a large dowry which makes her desirable for many who are seeking either prestige or funds but she has been hurt before. The man she was sure she would marry, married another. Now she prefers archery over flirting and has given up hope of finding someone who values her for herself. Her arch rival is Isaac the Earl of Preston. They are bitter rivals in archery matches and are continuous rubbing each other the wrong way. But when Isaac’s world is turned upside down with the revealing of a secret, the one person he sees as being able to help him is Emma. This book is such a great read, I know you’ll enjoy it. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.
This story tells about how lady Emma and lord Isaac end up being in each other’s presence frequently due to terms put upon them when Isaac asks for the help of a matchmaker. Why they end up agreeing to the situation, despite the fact the two of them are fierce archery opponents is revealed as the story continues to unfolds. The outcome of a sweet romance and happy ending is also revealed. I enjoy this author’s sweet romances.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. I enjoyed this book and the banter back and forth with this couple. You could see how much they cared for each other just by how much time they enjoyed spending together. Fun to see how the matchmaker made them realize they enjoyed spending time together. The nieces were a great added bonus to the family.
I love Emma's character. She is so fun, independent, witty and vulnerable. Isaac is the perfect man for her, if she could see past all his flaws. Emma and Isaac have a love hate relationship. He loves to tease her and get her riled up. When Isaac and Emma have to spend a lot of time with one another they both start to see the other with different eyes. I loved everything about this book and could hardly put it down.
Lord Isaac Preston has at last decided to find a wife due to his father's overbearing persuasion. He decides to seek professional matchmaking help in finding his wife, but he must have meeting with the one lady who challenges him on every turn, Lady Emma Brooksbank. As he uncovers information from his father, he seeks out Lady Emma more and more to help him with the situation he finds himself in. Lady Emma becomes his friend and eventually he finds himself falling for her.
Lady Emma Brooksbank is tired of Society and the push to marry. Her mother drives her crazy and to find a bit of reprieve, she agrees to attend Lord Preston's meetings with the matchmaker even if he is insufferable. She is taken by surprise at a chance to see a different side of Lord Preston that has her questioning how she feels about him.
It was a wonderful regency romance that I enjoyed reading. I liked how both Lady Emma and Lord Preston see beyond the competitor in each other to what lies beneath and who each of them truly are. It is great to see how their relationship grows. This is a clean read with a sweet story of romance.
I received an ARC. The opinion expressed is mine and mine alone.
The storyline and plot are good. But her writing style doesn’t flow, tends to be choppy. She writes dialog very stilted and often too formal using repetitive phrases and words that interrupts the flow.
Words like “rightly” don’t usually flow in her writing and she uses it several times. Along with other phraseology that is either too formal or too informal at times. Her descriptions within the dialog often doesn’t feel natural.
Anyway, it sometimes is painful to read. I’m not sure if her later writing improves a lot, as I remember feeling she is a very good writer.
I finally got through the series as the reading was at times so stilted and painful. I hate leaving series unfinished so even though the writing wasn’t great. I wanted to see what happened next.
“Love is about giving someone the power to hurt you but trusting that they won’t.” Emma’s heart was broken after falling in love with someone whose heart belonged to another. This caused her to be guarded and decide to swear off marriage. Issac on the other hand was happily living his life as a bachelor and not really looking for a wife nor was he opposed to finding one. Reading about these twos interactions in previous stories I was hopeful they would get their own tale. It did not disappoint. I adored reading their adventure in realizing their feelings for one another. Watching Emma little by little remove the walls she built around herself was fabulous. This was a great end to the matchmaker series. I truly enjoyed every book in it. *I was given an arc. All opinions are my own*
Quick hits: - Characters were fun and believable. - Scenes between Isaac and has father mostly felt like they had no contribution to either character or the story. - Isaac is pretty adamant about his decision when the eventual solution is pretty simplistic and is essentially the same idea. - Side characters added to the story and I think reading about Hatch would be fun.
Overall, it’s a romance and it was a fun and quick read. Would recommend it for those reasons. Nothing to make it 4 or above for me, but that’s okay because it was solid and romances are usually 3-5 for me.
I have loved every Laura Beers book I've read, and Refining Lord Preston was no different. It is such a good book, y'all!
I'm fairly certain this book has it all - a determined lady archer, a kind hearted hero, an enemies to lovers vibe, a matchmaker, a couple of cute nieces, a dad with a grudge (who honestly just deserves a few good kicks to the shins), some great character growth, the sweetest love story.....what is there not to love here??
Emma and Isaac were so perfect for each other. I loved watching them fall in love without even realizing they were falling in love. This really was the sweetest love story ever.
If this book isn't on your TBR lists, what are you even waiting for? Put it there pronto! Trust me friends, it's worth it. You're welcome.
Love is about giving that person the power to hurt you but trusting they won’t…
A tidy, clean Regency Era read - could Emma trust the insufferable Lord Preston with her heart? Did she really despise him or was her traitorous heart coming to care for him? Would Lord Preston do the right thing and care for his nieces or would he send them away to the countryside to reside with strangers? And what about Lord Preston’s father who refused to even acknowledge his granddaughters? Perhaps a little too tidy and unbelievably happily ever after for the era…
Emma had once fallen in love. The man she had loved, married someone else. Emma's heart had been broken and she had no intention of suffering that pain again. Isaac had taken over the management of his family estates. His father took care of the political responsibility of being a peer of the realm. Isaac was now thirty and his father felt it was time for him to wed and produce many sons. While working on the books he discovered payment to a lady. Upon research he discovered the payments were for child care for his disgraced sisters daughters.
This was a good story. Lord Preston discovered that his sister had died and her children were in a workhouse. He went there with a Bow Runner to secure them from there. They were afraid of him, for they did not know him. He sent a maid to get them cleaned up, ordered clothes to be made for them, and toys in the nursery for the two girls. So much more to this story. You will enjoy this beautiful story.
A fine book showing the life and limitations of the times. It really shows how we in this day and age have such a different viewpoint and ability to manage our day to day responsibilities as well as our societal necessities. No TV or horror movies.
Romance sweet, period; Series, but standalone read Emma and Lord Preston’s story was told from alternating points of view. They are friends and come together as a matchmaker sees them both together. Lord Preston is requesting her services, and she invites Emma to join him. Moments happen, and they both realize they care for each other as more than friends.
This book is a great regency romance and was a pleasure to read. It gives a glimpse into the life of the elite of London with fun characters with a troublesome courtship. I recommend this book.
Sweet and tender with all the feeling of love and conflict overcome. A very nice addition to the series and I have read and enjoyed all of them. Totally recommend this series to anyone who wants a great HEA!
