At the same time as they were making history on X-MEN, Chris Claremont and John Byrne were pairing Spider-Man with some of the coolest and catchiest characters in the Marvel firmament! But first, this volume opens with one of the earliest appearances of the all-new, all-different X-Men revival in the very first MARVEL TEAM-UP ANNUAL, by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema! Mantlo concludes his sterling run with a Byrne-drawn two-parter as Spidey and the Hulk square off against Woodgod — whose rare first appearance is also included in this volume! And when Byrne links up with Claremont, the duo begins a white-hot run that teams Spidey with Yellowjacket, the Wasp, the Human Torch, Iron Fist and the Daughters of the Dragon!
Chris Claremont is a writer of American comic books, best known for his 16-year (1975-1991) stint on Uncanny X-Men, during which the series became one of the comic book industry's most successful properties.
Claremont has written many stories for other publishers including the Star Trek Debt of Honor graphic novel, his creator-owned Sovereign Seven for DC Comics and Aliens vs Predator for Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a few issues of the series WildC.A.T.s (volume 1, issues #10-13) at Image Comics, which introduced his creator-owned character, Huntsman.
Outside of comics, Claremont co-wrote the Chronicles of the Shadow War trilogy, Shadow Moon (1995), Shadow Dawn (1996), and Shadow Star (1999), with George Lucas. This trilogy continues the story of Elora Danan from the movie Willow. In the 1980s, he also wrote a science fiction trilogy about female starship pilot Nicole Shea, consisting of First Flight (1987), Grounded! (1991), and Sundowner (1994). Claremont was also a contributor to the Wild Cards anthology series.
Chock full of team-up goodness, this collection covers MTU #53-#64, Annual #1, and a bonus Marvel Premier #31 featuring Woodgod, a rather puzzling Bill Mantlo written experiment about a lab created Satyr that never really caught fire with me or fandom. Highlights were the two part battle against Super Skrull in MTU #61-#62 with Spidey teaming with first The Human Torch and Ms. Marvel in the two issues. Skrull is a beast and gives as good as he gets and really poses a major threat.
The art of John Byrne and Sal Buscema is just great. The writing, though, is a mixed bag. I liked Claremont's touching introduction but unfortunately I was not equally touched by Bill Mantlo's stories themselves. The 1977 calendar at the end of the book was indeed a good extra. Along with Marvel Premiere #31 that should actually be read before Marvel Team-Up #53.
This is a peak Bronze Age experience that shows off some of John Byrne's finest work of the period. If you buy only one Marvel Team-Up Masterwork, it ought to be this one. It's excellent from start to finish.
A very strange collection, half Mantlo and half Claremont-Byrne. The Mantlo stuff is fairly typical Bronze-Age freakout (for some reason, the bad guys in the SpiderMan/Woodgod story are the Star Trek characters.... uniforms, actors, everything... just saying.) About halfway through Claremont & Byrne arrive, with Byrne inked by Dave Hunt, who is probably top 3 or 4 inker for Byrne. Claremont's at the top of his superhero game I thought, with none of the meandering hanging chads of his later X-men plots-- just tight little two-part superhero stories. They even reprint the original Mantlo/Giffen Woodgod story because Woodgod. Don't make me get the SCREAM on you.
