Rebellion #2

Defiance

Rate this book
Returning to their pack was always going to be dangerous, but is the fight for freedom worth the cost?

Cole and Logan return to London, ready to execute their plan of connecting with the human resistance. But with both of them blamed for the deaths resulting from Cole’s escape attempt, they receive a less than warm welcome from the McKillan pack.

Cole gets a second chance, but it’s not without restrictions, and he must toe the line and do whatever it takes to fit in. But earning the trust of his alpha and fellow shifters comes at a price.

For Logan, being close to Cole and unable to touch him is a daily torment, but watching from the sidelines while Cole learns what it means to be a McKillan enforcer is pushing him to his limits.

Both men must play their parts to perfection if they want Cole to be accepted into the pack, and that means doing what’s asked of them, no matter the cost.

Defiance is an angsty MM paranormal romance, featuring established relationship, secrecy and intrigue, and all the pining.

I mainly enjoyed part 2 in this series because …

.) Logan and Cole are putting themselves into a situation which is doomed right from the beginning. All yeah to that! It made for a captivating read.

.) The tension is high, and the angst is well done. I was fully invested into the story despite my niggles about the plot at times.

.) The enforced proximity between Cole and Logan when they can’t even touch for most of the time creates some pretty unbearable, well written UST. Apart from a couple of kisses and quickies the couple is ‘apart’ for most of the book. Again, like in book 1, what happens in the end on the romance front is a little surprise. I didn’t think that they are at that stage in their relationship, yet.

However,…

.) I’m not sure I really understand why they think it is such a good idea to return into the ‘eye of the storm’ considering the risk and the very real chance of being found out. I feel they could have helped better in a different way.

It seems highly unplausible that Cole would attempt to do exactly what he ‘ran away’ from in book 1. The ultimate goal of “helping people” is maybe not quite cutting it as a sensible reason. The things his new job would entail are completely against his beliefs and what he stands for.

.) Not sure how other shifters don’t notice/smell the chemistry between Logan and Cole when they find it so hard to hide it. They are wolves, after all!

.) I’m usually quite oblivious, but I saw the ‘surprise twist’ at the end coming for quite a wee while before it happened.

Still, I enjoyed reading this, I liked all the characters and wouldn’t mind to find out more about Michael and Issac.

3,5 stars for the plot! But 4 stars for the enjoyment factor!

Same review for the second and third book in the series because, even though they are about two different couples, I had pretty much the same experience with these and the first book. I liked the overarching plot of the series, it wasn’t perfect, but it did the job done well; the relationships weren’t as good, though, I didn’t much feel the romance in Logan and Coles’s case and even the second book didn’t help much in that regard. It was marginally better in the third book, at least the lack of relationship development could be explained with it being a second chance scenario, so it didn’t feel as insta-love as Logan and Cole, but going around and around the same thoughts about their relationship started to feel a little repetitive after a while.
I did enjoy the series, although I’ve a feeling it won’t be one I’ll remember in detail in the not-so-distant future.

My sodding review just vanished. Will write it again when I'm at the laptop tomorrow.

Let me just pop a non spoiler note I sent to Annabelle during my beta read of this book though 😘

Yes! Get in, bloody brilliant twist!

I won't tell you at what point in the narrative I wrote it though 😂

***

Right, my actual review which the Goodreads app decided to lose yesterday!

Annabelle Jacobs' Regent's Park pack - start with Bitten by Mistake - is one of my all-time favourite shifter series', so when she said she was writing another wolves saga, I was absolutely delighted.

As you can see from my review of book one Escape I was utterly blown away by it and how incredibly different it is from the RPP series - this new Rebellion world is dangerous, it's fraught with tension, it has a feel of an occupied country under wartime conditions.

Shifters were once persecuted but 10 years ago they rebelled against their human oppressors and took over. Unfortunately, power corrupts and the ideals of the Shifter Alliance Party for a Britain where both species are equal has long gone.

Humans are forced to take a bite and transform into a wolf shifter if their DNA shows they have the gene and life is not pleasant for anyone who doesn't want to conform to the rules.

In this second installment, which I had the honour of beta reading for Annabelle, we pick up where Escape left off - literally - with Logan and Cole being returned under guard to the McKillan pack.

What follows next is a brilliantly paced, adrenaline causing rush as the plan to infiltrate the pack on behalf of the human resistance begins and rapidly starts going off track.

There are so many unforeseen consequences of their actions. Both men are forced to hurt the other and the sense that everything is about to unravel just grows stronger the more the plot goes on.

Of course, we get another cliffhanger to the main overall story arc, as I'd expect with a series long plot, but their relationship is not threatened. As with book one, this is paranormal first, romance second but don't think that it's not important.

Everything that Cole and Logan go through is because of their love. They are more committed to each other than ever before and, at book's end, are in an incredibly solid place.

It was impossible for me to put this down from the second I started reading the draft (the odd note aside 😉 ) until it finished and I felt like I'd just been through a Tough Mudder trial!

No spoilers but OMG I need book three (and four, five and six given how much else I want to know about this world!) like yesterday please Annabelle!

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review

I've been sitting on this review for a while now...and I've come to terms with the fact that my reluctance is mainly because I wanted to love it more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad by any means. I enjoy Jacobs writing and will continue to pounce on anything she releases. But this particular shifter series isn't near the top of my AJ favorites.
The characters are fabulous.
The tension is like a tightrope, vibrating it's so tight.
The pack politics creates a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat quandary.
But...the romance is barely noticeable.
It's well-written paranormal with great world-building but I just miss the passion that I've come to expect with Jacobs wolves.
So, yes, I liked it but I can't say I loved it.

*3.5 good PN but missing the R stars*

Mostly enjoying this series, but even more so than the last book, the entire plot really required a significant suspension of belief. The world building here is just super flimsy and the decisions and twists here honestly don't make a lot of sense if examined in any way. I liked the characters, but the romance is pretty muted, which isn't my jam, especially with such flimsy plotting. Once again, pretty low-steam, and while I did enjoy, and am planning to read the conclusion, it's not quite as good as I wanted it to be.

So, I struggled with the first half of the previous book “Escape” I totally put it down to me. But I’m struggling again I’m just not sure this is the right series for me. Which is crazy because it’s a different take on the general shifter story. So I should love it.

I’m nothing if not stubborn and tenacious. So the fact that Cole chose to return is doing my head in. I know circumstances have changed but I can’t wrap my head around it. Lives were lost and everything was put in danger for him to escape to then return. Return to do the job he so adamantly ran from.

Anyway.

At about the halfway point I took a break. The plan was to read another book and return. I ended up reading a whole series again (A Matter of Time) then returning.

I’m not sure what went wrong for me. Yes I struggled with their decision and the first half in particular seemed to drag on. The ending wasn’t a surprise by the time we got there but I feel the next book might be better. I think I found the set up in London too restrictive and I hated that Cole and Logan couldn’t be together. I know, I know I’ve no patience.

Anyway bring on the next one now I’m ready.

Wow! This is book 2 in the Rebellion series and it’s just as action packed as book one. I love the pacing of this story because there’s never a dull moment. It’s constantly moving toward the goal of a better human/shifter government. (We even get a plot twist at the end 😲)

At the beginning of the book, you get a brief glossary of who’s who. It refreshes your memory in case you’ve taken a break between books. There’s also an explanation of what the different groups are and what they do. I appreciated this so much.

*****SPOILERS OF BOOK ONE AHEAD*****

When the last book ended, Logan and Cole had decided to return to the McKillan pack to try to get other humans to trust Cole now that he’s a shifter. So many humans and shifters don’t agree with a lot of the laws that the Shifter Alliance Party has implemented. They don’t want forced pack alliances, or having humans forced to accept “the bite.” On the other side of the coin, the shifters don’t want to be controlled by the humans as to when they can shift and run. That was one of the reasons the shifters overthrew the human government and put the Shifter Alliance Party in place. But, as often happens, the oppressed became the oppressor. Things are still unbalanced.

I had been hoping for more sexy times between Cole and Logan in this book. However, I was happy that those scenes weren’t just thrown in to appease readers. They simply wouldn’t have fit in with what was happening in the story. We do get a couple of stolen moments, but the relationship is built more in heart than in bed. Overall, I was left very satisfied with how it all worked out. 🐺♥️🐺

BUT!!! There’s still more that has to happen. With the next book being titled Uprising, I think we know what needs to happen to settle everything once and for all. I believe this is a trilogy and that will conclude this adventure, and I’m excited to see how that all comes about.

June 2022 = DNF'd at 70%

While I really enjoyed book 1, I found book 2 to be quite dull in comparison. I started skimming early on, to see if it would at some point engage me, but it never did. I gave up due to not caring one whit about what was happening or about the characters. Even the one brief sex scene was skimmed. 🥱

This is all about Cole joining the McKillan pack.

What Happens in No Particular Order:
Cole is interrogated, tortured a bit and beaten up a few times. He learns about pack history, rules, and etiquette. He is taught to fight, and learns interrogation techniques by having to . Cole attends his parents' fake funeral, gets a tattoo, and is bitten by the head alpha. He goes on his first pack run during a full moon. As for the romance, there are a couple kisses and a brief sex scene (before I DNF'd).

The writing feels mediocre, and the story lacks the excitement of the first book. There are no character descriptions and only minimal details, which was disappointing. As a reader, I really appreciate vivid descriptions and sensory details. After enjoying a book with great descriptions, this one seemed bland and barely outlined. I call it lazy writing, which makes it harder to remember later on.

If the plot had been about the actual rebellion, instead of Cole joining and being a part of the pack, I would've liked it more. The pacing is too slow and much of what occurs is everyday activities.

Plus, there are no good sexy scenes, like book one. I've come to realize that this is how A.J. writes.

I won't be attempting book 3.

I have to say, I liked this even more than the first book in the series. Defiance grabs you right from the beginning with a high-tension atmosphere upon Cole and Logan’s return to London, and that tension does not let up even a teensy bit through the whole story. The expectations placed upon Cole are tremendous, and the pressure is on both him and Logan to not give away anything that could jeopardize the rebellion or reveal their relationship.

Cole has to endure interrogation, training, and trying to fit in with his team—sometimes under brutal conditions, even with his own team members. Emotions run high, resulting in both Cole and Logan walking a very fine line as Cole is assimilated into the pack.

You want suspense? You’ve got it. You want sexual tension? Yep, that too. You want an absolutely unexpected twist you will never see coming? You’re definitely in the right place. Okay, maybe you’ll get a teeny, tiny inkling near the end…

I was on edge the whole time I was reading this, and I loved every minute of it. Defiance gets 5 stars from me, and now I REALLY can’t wait to see what’s next! And is it too much to hope for maybe a backstory for an unexpected couple, say…as a short story bonus? Pretty please? M/M paranormal fans, you really do need this series in your library (and yes, you need to read these in order). 18+ for adult language, violence, and sexual content.

One, if you haven’t read Escape yet, read that book first. Two, this book is intense and mind-blowing. It literally had me clenching my whole body and holding my breath while reading—worth the anxiety. It has plot twists, bombshells and full-throttle action, but it also has incredible friendships and love. “He and Logan had a connection, one that grew with every touch, every moment spent together or apart.” I’m so glad we saw more of Cole and Logan as a couple but wow did they have an angsty time of it. The angst was so thick I could take a bite out of it and still, I’m clamoring to see what happens next. Really though, this story is so much more than just these two. It’s complex, and so cleverly woven, I believe when all is said and done, a beautiful tapestry will be revealed.

So exciting! I loved this one too. Cole and Logan face a lot, but the forbidden love angst in this book feels delightful. Hopefully the next book isn't two years down the line, but I will still be expecting it with lots of anticipation

DEFIANCE is the second book in the Rebellion series, and I really hope it's not the last! This world is fascinating, with twists that took me completely by surprise and definitely left me wanting more.

So, we start where Escape finished, with Cole and Logan returning to the Pack and their lives being made incredibly difficult. Cole and Logan have it as easy as they thought they would, with no time to be together without risking everything.

The intrigue, Pack politics, you name it, in this book are simply outstanding! I was gripped by every new development and new questions of just who I could trust. The action is different to the first book but no less intense.

I have no idea how many books Ms Jacobs has planned for this series, but I hope for many! An enthralling read that absolutely kept my attention. A great addition to the series that left me wanting more. Highly recommended by me.

*4.5 stars* Annabelle Jacobs’ Defiance is the second book in her Rebellion urban fantasy romance trilogy. This is a continuing storyline so you need to read these books in order. Cole and Logan have set their plan in motion and we see them acting undercover as they infiltrate the McKillan pack. They pretend to hate each other because they have to. Cole in particular is under intense scrutiny, like they are just waiting for him to misstep. It’s intense and it, understandably, really wears him down. Ms. Jacobs does an amazing job making you feel these characters’ emotions. The story made me anxious, which is the intended effect because that’s Cole and Logan’s experience. I don’t want to say too much, but know that there are some plot twists that are unexpected and quite effective. I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see what happens next.

And So It Continues.

MM paranormal romance, needs to be read in series order as story continues on from the first book. Easy to read page-turner full of intrigue and danger. Cole, Logan and their friends and fellow resistance members are still trying to help humans that don't want to become pack members escape. But it's an uphill battle. Action throughout, lots of twists and turns and a few big surprises this has been a great read, looking forward to book 3.

This is a series that needs to be read in order. I enjoyed this second book more than the first one. Logan and Cole have things to fight for. They are returning to London and have even more to deal with. They know things are going to be intense but they’d till fought for what they felt was right. There was a lot of action and intense emotion in the story. I loved it all and I can’t wait to see where this is going to go. The story kept me on the edge of my seat and very entertained.

Terrific continuation of story

I have only one problem with this series. It’s not finished yet! I am in love with these characters and this interesting story. I like the different take of a shifter story and the twists and turns in this series. Very interesting, different and well written.

I loved this like whoa. It just…grabbed me and didn’t let go. The action, the adventure, the pining, it all worked so well for me.

This is one of those cool instances where book two is even better than a great book one. It had more of everything and what a ride!

Logan and Cole (and company) need a vacation. But I highly doubt that’s in the cards for the next book.

Highly recommend!

Defiance grabs you from the start and takes you on quite the ride.
You will be kept on the edge of your seat and love it.

There are plot twists, action, friendship, romance and so much more.
Cole and Logan face a lot but the fight is well worth it for the love they end up with.
I can't wait for the next book!

They are returning to the pack but it is not going to be easy as they have been blamed for some deaths when he escaped. They will have to toe the line and do what ever is needed. He will find it hard not to teach him while they try to prove they are good for the pack. Will they be accepted? Will they be able to be open about their love for the other? Where will it all go? Follow them to find out

Well it had some pretty good parts and I enjoyed it but the too convenient coincidences were even more pronounced than in the first book. I mean the plot twists were not twisting much.
Michael x Isaac hint was intriguing though
But I have a feeling that the next one won’t be better with all the obvious rebellion points.

Proper edge of your seat action, even though I wanted to throttle them sometimes and say what did you expect!

Dragged a little in the middle. Next book isn’t about Cole/Logan directly and not even sure if it’s the last book in the series. If it isn’t I suggest the series will drag on a bit then.

As much of a suspenseful mystery/thriller as a romance, but there's plenty of both heat and excitement in this series so far. Annabelle Jacobs' Dark Forest Pack series is still my favorite of hers, but I am quite enjoying this so far.
