We are alone, all of us. Life has a way, even before all of this, to make us feel alone, by ourselves, isolated. Before The Virus, before the lockdowns, before the quarantines, life was deceivably lonely. We got up, went to work, came home, watched tv, and went to bed. All of it alone. We were trapped in patterns that brought us apart. It wasn’t until we were forced to look at our lives, look at ourselves, and reevaluate who we are and who we’ll be on the other side, that we really understood ourselves. Turns out a lot of us were doing the bare minimum whether by choice or necessity.
Quarantine turned out to be a magnifying glass on us as a culture, society, and species. Humans aren’t that different from a virus. Most importantly, we don’t do well when we’re alone. Quarantine, for all of its downsides, was a blessing, and a curse.
Being alone with yourself, with your thoughts, it’s hard. But it can allow you to see things you would normally ignore. It can allow you to become a part of something you didn’t know existed.
It likely doesn’t surprise you that, like many of you, I’m trapped at home. Like many of you, I’ve taken up a new hobby. I’ve discovered that there is more to life than most people are aware of. I stumbled across something that piqued my interest... stories. Stories of people who, like you and me, are experiencing “the new normal” as the media likes to label it. Life inside COVID-19, Covid times, or simply quarantine. Only, they aren’t like you and me at all. These people, in these stories, are dipping their toes into a pool of unrelenting horror. They don’t know it, understand it or want it, but that’s part of the process. You don’t go looking for something like this, well… unless you’re me.
I’m an Aurora Wasteland researcher, at it less than a year. I picked it up when this all happened, during the very first round of quarantines. Then, like now, I’m trapped at home. I can’t go out. I have my reasons. What I do is somewhere between data scientist, therapist, fake news debunker, and paranormal investigator. My work is done here, sitting at my desk, reading. I dig through all the garbage, the heartbreak, the surreal, for you… and well… myself. I’m looking for something, and I hope with the noise of the world dialed back, I’ll be able to find it.
Let’s work our way through this somewhat chronologically. Stories often make the most sense when told in order, though that can be the least exciting. I’m going to go with linear, but feel free to hit the random or shuffle button, it’s your experience do so with it as you’d like.
What I’ve found is fresh, still dripping with slime. These aren’t old cases dug up to tell a story. This is all new, fresh and unspoiled by the words and insights of other Aurora Wasteland researchers and investigators. These are my takes, my research, my findings, my stories.
Welcome to the Aurora Wasteland Quarantine.A collection of short stories by Sci-Fi Horror author Vaughn Ashby spread across the literary universe unknown as The Aurora Wasteland.
Vaughn Ashby is the bestselling horror author of Tethered, Brightness Falls, & The Axe. He’s also a multi-view YouTube creator, & wannabe Podcaster.
Ash, or Uncle Ashby to you, holds degrees in Body Head Separation, Spacial Realignment, & Family Member Seducing Time Travel from the schools of Netflix, Blockbuster, & The Local Cinema. Vaughn also recently completed his Masters in Sci-fi Horror writing from the school of YM, better known as Your Mom.
Before being dragged into the world of writing kicking and screaming, he was a simple bearded human male with poor spelling skills. He was, and this is just true, not a robot, definitely not a human killing robot, with plans of wiping out the human race through writing complex plots that involve adult humor and sexiness.
Vaughn has watched multiple Masterclasses by Aaron Sorkin, Neil Gaimen, Margaret Atwood, & Gordon Ramsey, though not all the way through. He’s also the Winner of the Aurora Wasteland award, for being the only writer to write in that Literary Universe, which he created.
His passions include Whiskey, Tattoos, Movies, Writing, & Horror. Find out more about Vaughn at VaughnAshby.com
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! A collection of short Aurora Wasteland tales compiled into one overarching story to tie them together. Not to mention, it was such a wonderful mix of real life, covid issues, and the paranormal. A nice way to look at current like experiences of others and recounting difficulties we're all facing and how we handle them, while tying in entertaining and strange details to add lightness and enjoyment. I didn't think I would enjoy reading about covid quarantines, but this book was definitely the exception! I very much enjoyed it
First I should warn you that Vaughn Ashby is one of my favorite authors. His books walk a corkscrewed line between horror, sci-fi and twisted humor which is approximately where my brain resides. Aurora Wasteland Quarantine is the perfect example of his writing. In this case it’s a collection of short stories. I also have a deep love of reading short stories. Each story is introduced by “the narrator” and these introductions are at times hilarious but always insightful. In particular these stories are influenced by the COVID-19 virus which gives the reader a rare but close connection to this anthology. No only do I recommend but in fact implore the readers to try this book. YMMV but it will be repaid in full.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
An Aurora Wasteland researcher shares his reports about the weird and horrific events he has investigated during quarantine. The clear repetition in the phrasing of each report, creates the feeling of one cohesive whole instead of several pieces that have just been glued together. Furthermore, the story threads cross and cross again, more like complex webs that meet at many points along their lengths. Without giving away a plot spoiler, I can tell you this: if you ever bump into a white spider, don’t… I repeat… DO NOT squash it under your shoe. I received a preview copy of this book which I am voluntarily reviewing.
I had received this book from the author and the fine folks at bookfunnel.com in return for an honest and fair review.
This book is another in the Aurora Wasteland series - which combines a series of short stories into the longer cogent form of a longer story (by which I mean that each is an independent story that form the building blocks of a more coherent story).
That said, I found the book to be thoroughly enjoyable and easily worth a strong rating of four stars out of five.
As with all reviews, this is just my five cents worth.
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Such a thrilling read that I couldn't put it down. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

Before The Virus, before the lockdowns, before the quarantines, life was deceivably lonely. We got up, went to work, came home, watched tv, and went to bed. All of it alone. Great story . Part horror plus humor and so different. You will enjoy it ,so get the book.
Aurora Wasteland Quarantine is one of a collection of short stories by Sci-Fi Horror author Vaughn Ashby. This is yet another great read by this author, and one I highly recommend. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation.
This is a collection of short stories presented as slightly twisted news based on a world plagued by a virus. As most of us know, it can be very lonely in quarantine but these tales show very unique and interesting events during the loneliness.
I really love this author. He seems to skirt the lines from horror to comedy to sci-fi and more. This set is based on quarantines and viruses. While some might be upset at the timing of these, I found them refreshing and entertaining. Well done!
Interesting addition to a very good series! Action, plots, sub-plots and very interesting characters make for a fun read! Hopefully this is not the end of the series!
Not quite as good as some of the other wasteland series but an interesting take on the Covid situation. I liked the way it way summed up in the Narrator section. The way the author's mind works is unique, I think. Strange happenings, strange solutions and oblique twists throughout but it works.
