An empire on the rise. Sin City struggling to survive. Rules are meant to be broken.
Digby Graves is done running. He wants to make good on his declaration of war, which means he’s going to need allies and a land to call his own. That’s where Las Vegas comes in: what better kingdom could a necromancer ask for than the city of Sin itself? With an opportunist turned kingpin, an army of fanatics, and a hive full of monsters standing in his way, the stakes have never been higher. It will take every spell and underhanded tactic in his arsenal to carve out a victory.
Even though he's drawing in allies, the cards are stacked against him. Henwick is bent on ruling the world, and is willing to sacrifice anything or anyone to win. The only power that might sway the odds in Digby’s favor has been locked down by his enemy… for now. With everything on the line, Digby is going to need an ace up his sleeve to come out on top.
It’s time to assemble a crew and pull off the heist of the millennium.
As I get further into the story, my main gripe keeps getting bigger:
The author is not very good at action scenes.
In fact, I would contend that most action scenes in this series fail, for the same reason.
Here is what happens: while narration is focused on one specific angle/person/event, all other events just kind of "freeze", waiting for the current one to complete. What this creates is incongruities in scenes where events, that are supposed to happen in parallel, end up becoming sequential. . When it happens and you notice it, it totally destroys suspension of disbelief, which takes time to rebuild, before getting destroyed again by the next freeze - because it happens every time.
This problem became so glaring, I had trouble enjoying this volume as much as I did the previous ones. I just started skipping the fights; they were just too badly timed. Hopefully the author notices the issue and does something about it in the coming volumes.
The plot however, is still quite interesting, and I found the flashback strategy effective in keeping me engaged. The plot twist at the end was a bit of a stretch . I also find everyone excessively verbose for no reason. The protagonists are growing somewhat, but I think that Digs is getting far less pushback than he should by the "civilians". Maybe his charming personality...
The next volume hints at the birth of new Heretics. Exciting to see who will get picked, and what kind of synergy they will be able to create. .
All in all, we're at volume 3 and I'm still willing to keep tracking this series. That's a huge win in my book.
“This was a fun book. I am glad that I read it. You should try it too.”
I am not going to share my reasoning, thoughts on the book, or any opinions that would influence your decision to read it. I am simply saying that I liked it. I would like you to read it and make your own decision. After all, you are a much better judge of what you will like than anyone here.
I will happily discuss the book with you on Goodreads if you are so inclined. As always, I am open to debates and arguments, but also vain enough to seek acknowledgement, so feel free to roast me or applaud my efforts. Either is acceptable, because if you are paying attention to me then you are at least considering the book. And THAT my friends is exactly why you see my comments here.
I he spent my weekend. Reading books 1 to 3 . This was a great experience I found all of them were fun and exciting. The charters are rich and each one developed into a strong and relatable person. The plots had me guessing till the end. I was only upset because at this point I need book 4. So please keep up and send more stories soon 😇😇thank you for your hard work
It's not that common that I find a series with each book keeping up the quality of the first, it's full of dynamic characters that actually develop and grow as well as action and deception, even heists this time. I now crave these books like a zombie craves brains.
Some authors struggle to maintain quality as they continue a series and deal with much tighter deadlines for sequels. Thankfully, this series has stayed solid and high quality despite rapid sequels being released, and I remain a fan. If you liked the first book, buy the series!
Another amazing book! David Petrie has made another awesome volume for series and I absolutely cannot wait for the next volume to come out. Looking forward to finding out what Digby and his coven discover. Keep up the awesome work David!
What’s great about this series is the 800 years dead zombie lead necromancer. It combines something of a fish out of water story with a zombie apocalypse and the intersection of the two works.
I am really enjoying this series in audio version! Travis Baldree is doing an outstanding job narrating all the characters and with the excellent writing by David Petrie it’s for sure one of my best litrpg books!
… They just eat whatever they want. And smart zombies do some amazing things. This series has been fun so far - lots of interesting twists in the high-intensity moments. And lots of entertaining zombie puns and jokes.
This was a great book. In my previous reviews I'd thought this was a trilogy but it seems like I was wrong and that the story continues, I look forward to the next book in this series and seeing what Dig and the gang get up to next.
Soooo there is a thing that zombie related things always do and that shows the cruelty of man and they hope is lost (walking dead). This does not…. While the team does battle baddies they themselves hold strong despite our approval seeking, lovable trouble maker of course getting into trouble.
This was an amazing edition for this series, and my favorite of the three so far. Not only does Digby face off against Bancroft, but we finally get to see more of Henwick - and the information we get is great!
Some questions answered! So many new ones raised! I can't wait for book 4!
Digby goes to Las Vegas and takes over. From there he starts going at the BBEG and gets the heretic seed back. This story is hilarious. I’m enjoying every minute. Come along for the ride.
Another interesting chapter in this magic and zombie and video game crossover! I loved the story, there's so much going on with the magic that keeps you hooked. The characters are all interesting and different. I rated this one a FOUR STAR because there are a lot of errors in this version of the book, including using the incorrect word or missing words all together though the writing is great.
