Winsford Shifters #3

Of Redemption and Vengeance

Rate this book
Emery
It all comes down to this.

I should have known my freedom from Mercer would only last so long before my pack was hunted down and I was dragged back into it all. It’s suffocating being back in this place that twisted my shifter side forever and threatened to change who I am. But this time is different.

Because I’m not alone.

As threats to us and our pack pile up, I’m forced to rely on Graham, the overly protective shifter I feel a strange pull toward. We know we have to get away to warn the others of what’s to come, but with Mercer’s shifters breathing down our necks, we’re being thrust into a fight for our lives. We are determined to make it back to the pack and tear down the threat before it consumes all of us.

Graham
I’ve literally never met a more stubborn man in my life than Emery, yet I can’t get him out of my head. He covers up his insecurities and concerns with snark and teasing, but I know that underneath it all is a man who just wants someone to give him a chance. And I’m prepared to be that person if we can fight our way through this. First, we have to escape the threat left behind by Mercer, but escaping isn’t enough. We need to destroy everything the group’s ever worked for to keep each other and our pack safe.

Join Graham, Emery, Rowan, and Quinn for the exciting conclusion to the Winsford Shifters trilogy. This series contains action-filled romance with a dash of comedy, and should be read in order.

After thoroughly enjoying the previous books, I was eager to read the last of the trilogy, which was also very entertaining and loads of fun.

This book had tons of snark and banter, like the first ones, but for fans of Alice's signature, over-the-top humor, the funnier moments felt a little more restrained than in the preceding stories in this series. I suspect that was due to both Emery and Graham's characters being slightly more serious and less "zany" than MC's like Ari.

I really liked Emery in the previous story, where he started to become more than just a background bit player, finally opening up and showing the reader some actual feelings and emotion. And unquestionable loyalty towards Quinn, the first person whom he'd felt actually cared about him -- without wanting something in return.

[My take on Emery...]

Quinn's brother, Graham, had always had a steady presence in the previous books, but I was thrilled to finally get his POV first-hand.

After the defeat of the main bad guy in the last story, I'd expected a little more of a break from the bad luck that stuck to Quinn's pack like a bad goddamn penny, but that never really happened. Like, at all.

IT'S A TRAP!!!

The story does end with an HEA for Emery and Graham, and bluer skies in sight for Quinn's entire growing pack, for which I was glad.

I'd hoped that Rowan's brother, Brennan, might get a book, too, but that's mostly because I'm just a greedy reader like that, so I'm okay with how the series ended. Mostly. 😉

If you read the first two books, this one is a must and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last, so I'd recommend it for sure and rate it around 3.75 stars.

My whole life has been thrown upside down, tossed into a fucking blender and turned on high without the lid on. It’s a fucking mess, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in sight.

Mercer might be gone, but Emery and Graham have been captured by Stone, the real head of the project “crazy shifters”. Quinn and Rowan must hurry if they want to find and rescue them before it's too late. On their side, Graham and Emery are trying their best to escape and hide, but it seems that they can’t trust anyone.

There is more action in this book than in the second book. It's almost non-stop action and running, there are also betrayals, secrets revealed, and a lot of life-threatening situations. Contrary to the two previous books, there are 4 points of view in this one as we follow Graham and Emery as well as Quinn and Rowan, and they are separated from each other for most of the book. It was nice to learn more about Graham and Emery, and to get a better insight into their mind.

We look like we went through hell and back and then back to hell, and then we took a detour through the hellier side of hell and were spit out of hell’s asshole. At least that’s what I feel like.

There are a lot of obstacles to overcome in this book. Actually, things were already getting frustrating for Quinn and his pack in the second book as every lead they got on Mercer and his shady experiments seemed to end up being useless or they were being threatened or even attacked so they would stop investigating. This book is also full of challenges, secrets, and betrayals, and we can see how this is bigger than anyone thought. It is nicely wrapped up though, and I feel that the parts that were left unanswered in the previous books were all answered here.

“I’ll go!” a voice pipes from beyond the door. I slowly turn to face the Peeping Tom who is, of course, none other than Ari. Instead of knocking on the door like a civilized human, he’s hovering around on my front porch, peeking through the window like a creep. And on top of that, how the hell does he always know how to find the action and squeeze his way into being involved?
“See? The creepy perv from next door has already volunteered to take your spot,” Rowan says, not looking at all enthused by this. “Which is why I’ve decided that I will not take him.”

There is one main plotline in this book, which is to finally get rid of Stone, and his crew, and go back to live happily ever after in the village. The book starts with two different "sub plotlines" as Emery and Graham are captive, and Quinn and Rowan are trying to find them to rescue them. Then, Rowan, and Quinn get separated too, so we follow Quinn who is on a mission to find everybody, Rowan who is trying to survive, while also searching for the rest of his pack, and Emery and Graham who are trying to escape and find their way back home. I am not the biggest fan of books where the main characters are separated, but it actually worked well in this one because of the fast pace, all the action, and the fact that I knew they would eventually all find their way back to each other. It also made it so easy to “read one more chapter” because I needed to know what would happen next with all the characters.
I pull Graham in close, not because I care, but because I might need a meat distraction if someone busts in here.
“What are you…?” Graham asks. “Meat shield,” I explain.
“Ah, thanks. I’m glad I could sacrifice my meat for you.”
I grin. “I am too. Now shush, they’re coming. Stand still and quiet like a good meat shield.”

He doesn’t seem too convinced but does lie down on his unhurt side where he stares at me. “Pillow… activate.”
I stare back at him as I realize he thinks I’m the pillow. He waves to the spot. “Pillow?”
“I’m not your pillow.”

While this book focuses more on Graham and Emery, as they are now both captives of Stone's crew, I wouldn't say that there is a lot of romance in it. We can still enjoy the dry sarcasm of Emery, and it made me smile so much how Graham just took everything in stride and remained so calm, even when Emery was acting a little crazy or was clearly trying to abuse Graham's niceness. It was also heartbreaking to see how scared and scarred Emery was by his time as Stone’s captive, and it made it even sweeter when Graham let him walk all over him because he knew that Emery needed to feel in control. I also loved Emery’s loyalty to Quinn, and his unrelenting desire to please him and go back to his pack because even though he hadn’t known him for long, he knew this would be a safe place for him, and he knew that Quinn is trustworthy and would have his back.

Emery did change since the beginning of the series. He went from the loner shifter who didn't trust or rely on anyone to a slightly less loner shifter who became more open to Graham, and he even shows a more excited and younger side of him at times. Their interactions are still full of banter, but it felt less over the top and ridiculous than the interactions between Quinn, Rowan or Ari, probably because Graham and Emery are both much more serious and quiet characters than the rest of this series' main and secondary characters.

While I did enjoy the snark and cute moments a lot, I have to say that overall, I was less involved in their romance than in Quinn and Rowan's in books 1 & 2. It fell a little flat for me honestly, and I am not even sure I can explain why. I still like those 2 together a lot, and they made me smile and laugh, but I didn't feel all mushy and warm inside because of their budding romance because there was so much happening in this book, the focus was more on the action and resolution of the plot than it was on the relationship development and romance.

Rowan looks more than a bit hesitant. “Hmm… I kind of don’t want to look at it. Ari’s been sending me nude pictures.”
“Wait, what?” I ask, wondering how hard it’d be to reach his house in time to threaten him before Logan noticed and threatened me back. I’m positive it’s the only thing that could ever make Logan mad at me.
Rowan waves at me. “Oh, no, no, don’t stress. Not of him. Of you.”
It takes at least a full minute for that to sink in.

Ari is still cute and hilarious, but he is a little more subdued in this book. I feel that he would be a real pain in the ass in real life, but the fact that he is a fictional character makes his silly, and "I do not care about boundaries because I know I'm cute and I can get away with anything" behavior funny instead of aggravating. And he shifts into a freaking ocelot so I would be a sucker for him too if I am being honest. I would adopt him and keep him forever as my cute pet. He and Rowan can come to live with me and just be cute anytime they want to.

“What do you do if you come across a box?” Quinn asks as I prepare to get in the car for the drive to meet my father.
“Jump in it!” Ari immediately replies from where he’s hanging on Logan.
I stare at my mate in disbelief that he would ask me something so ridiculous and be so very amused by it.
“No. Don’t jump in it,” Quinn says.

It's no secret that I'm a cat lady. I have two furry babies that I love with my whole heart, so it made me smile even more every time Ari or Rowan would adopt a "typical" cat behavior in the book because I could clearly see my cats doing the same. It was even funnier to see Rowan realize that he just couldn't help himself, even though it made no sense at all to behave this way... Cats are really weird at times...

Nice story, interesting mystery plot, I enjoyed very much the action scenes, I was at the edge of my seat, good sex scenes, with loads of romance, just the way I like it.
A lot of highlights and a few lowlights, I noticed some inconsistencies, however I enjoyed the majority of this book. Kudos to Alice Winters!

I also have this book on Audible, Greg Boudreaux didn't disappointed, marvellous performance, acting on point, although Emery's voice changed from the previous book, now he sound more like Quinn! Only two sentences in this book I think he gave the inaccurate intention, it wasn't wrong, just for my taste I would give a different intention, but he's still one one my favourite narrators! Congratulations!!!

For this trilogy I think this is the best cover art, praise to Natasha Snow Designs!

Reread/Relisten: July 2023

same as last time i wish this was strictly Emery and Graham's book not mixed in with Rowan and Quinn, but i still enjoyed this reread.

4-4.5 stars August 2021

would have been a full 5 if we had more of Graham's POV. this one had all four main characters POV in there. I was assuming it was just going to be Graham and Emery.

Overall this was a good ending to the series. There was a lot of action which kept me on my toes the whole time.

I am bummed that this series came to a close but i think it ended in just the right way.

3.5*** happy ending stars

This is the last part in the series that had an ongoing storyline. See my other reviews here: book #1 and book #2

Even though my rating is only mediocre here, the series as a whole gave me a lot of happy feelings. I really do loved it. ♡♡♡

********
With this last book I was a little disappointed, though. After reading the blurb I assumed we would follow another couple (Graham & Emery) and I was really excited to get their story. But besides their side of the story we also got dragged back into Rowan and Quinn’s POV a lot.

It distracted from Graham and Emery’s story. It made sense for the author to do that because there was A LOT happening in this book and we wouldn’t have gotten everything just by staying solely with the other them. And well… without Quinn’s POV there also wouldn’t have been so much overly cute snow leopard and ocetot action. So what am I actually complaining about here?!?! I adore them all. ♡

But back to Graham and Emery. That they were mates was a sure thing since the last book. But sadly their romance fell really flat for me. Even they had their very very cute moments.

********
What I really liked about this series, this world was that there was no talk no questioning about someones sexuality. It simply didn’t matter. No one batted an eye about the different couples, not matter if it was MM, MF or FF. It was a perfect rainbow world with no judgement. 🏳️‍🌈

Overall I can really recommend this series. Especially for all audiobook lovers. Not only because Greg Boudreaux did, as usual, an outstanding job but because it was just highly entertaining and made me laugh a lot.

*********
I close this review with a cute interaction with Ari, my love and little drama queen:

I step outside only to run into Ari, as an ocelot, lying in a bush. I’m almost positive he thinks he’s completely hidden and is planning on jumping out at me. I pretend I don’t see him and take the path away from the bush. He lets out a noise of displeasure and comes barreling after me, shifting just as he reaches me. “What the hell, man?” he asks like I’ve horribly hurt him by avoiding his surprise attack. I grin at him as he pouts. “You need to learn to hide better.” “I was hidden. I was so fucking hidden. I was like… a shadow in the night. A… an ocelot in the dark.” “No, you were literally the first thing I saw as I came out. …“

Sweet mother of pearl, the stress and anxiety this book put me through! But what a perfect conclusion (sniff, sniff) to the Winsford Shifters series! Did I mention the stress and anxiety? I was not expecting how overwhelmed I'd feel reading this book- I think the last time I felt this way about an AW book was the In Darkness series.

I loved Of Redemption and Vengeance. After that ending to Of Betrayal and Monsters I couldn't wait to get Emery and Graham's story, and to see what was going to happen with the entire Winsford Shifters. I don't think there was anyway to know though, how much of a ride this story was going to be. I got to a point in the book and thought, oh, it should be easy sailing from here on out. What more could Alice put this group through, let alone me? Yeah, okay! I should have known better than to let my guard down!
While there was the trademark humor Alice Winters is know for - those scenes you just can't help but laugh out loud at, there was also scenes I read with apprehension- not knowing what was to come next. And when it came to Emery, there were times when he pulled at my heartstrings.

Even though this was Emery and Graham's story, I'm so glad we were given a few chapters in Quinn and Rowan's points of view, it wouldn't have felt right to say good-bye without hearing from them, since that's where it all began.
Of Redemption and Vengeance really had it all, and was everything I could have wanted for the conclusion to this series. The laughs, the love, the gasps, the suspense, the feeling of closure and completion.

4.5 stars. Fantastic conclusion to the trilogy.

I couldn’t wait to get my grabby little hands on this final instalment in the trilogy and I was not disappointed.

The dual POV gives great insight into the blooming relationship between Emery and Graham. There’s plenty of witty back and forth banter, deadpan humour and quiet, intimate moments between them. The focus is on the relationship between these characters, not steamy times, and it is beautifully done. My heart went out to Emery with all that he’s endured and the gentle, calming nature of Graham is a perfect counterpoint to Emery’s sharp edges.

The characters from previous instalments are all involved and Ari still takes great pleasure in tormenting Rowan! It takes a few unexpected plot twists and turns but the overall story arc is resolved at last and everyone gets to take a breath, settle back into village life and enjoy some peace and quiet.

I actually found that I liked Emery and Graham even more than the main couple of Quinn and Rowan.

Great end to the series.

It's weird though, usually I love the small sassy character, especially in Alice's books, but I really didn't like Ari. He just didn't feel like a good person to me. His snark didn't endear me like it usually would, it just annoyed me. Oh well.

Still really enjoyed this series.

This was so good & a perfect conclusion to this trilogy. I love dual point of views cause I get to see into each of their heads. I didn't see the identity of the bad guy coming, but it didn't really surprise me. So we pick up where the last book ended with Emery & Graham and back in the cells. And we have them trying to escape and taking down the bad guys once and for all. I did read this in one sitting as I needed to know what happened & why. My heart broke when we find out the extent of what they went through & the reasons why. Out of everyone, I love Ari the best, especially when he is tormenting Rowan. These books need to be read in order, they are not meant to be read as stand-alone.

I received a copy of this book from the Author and this is my honest opinion.

I’m not going to rate this. I skimmed a good majority of the book. But I know it’s me. I’m definitely in a book slump. So it’s nothing against the book itself I didn’t enjoy it. Maybe I’ll come back in a couple months and try reading it again. I definitely enjoyed the first two and looked forward to Emery’s story, so it sucks I couldn’t get into it right now. 😔

Our adorable Emery takes center stage in this vol. We are start the volume where we left off, with Emery and Graham being captured by Mercer's shifters. We are shown the horrid conditions these shifters lived in when they were first captured and experimented on. My heart goes out to them. No one should have to endure such torture. We are introduced to the main villain in the series. And it comes as a complete shock. It was a twist I hadn't expected, but enjoyed.
Now, on to what makes this vol better than the others, one word: Emery! He is totally adorable. More so than Ari. Seeing his personality really shine through with his interaction with Graham is great. We can see that no matter what was done to him, he retained his humanity. Graham, our loyal younger brother, was really great in this one as well. We got to really see him step up show how capable he is, and why Quinn relies on him so much. Watching him try to so hard to protect Emery warmed my heart.

Now, on to the one area that put a damper on the book: Quinn and Rowan making dumb decisions! Seeing them do things that are obviously not smart was frustrating. Seeing them letting their emotions overrun and screw up a important moment, made me want to strangle them. But they made up for it by Rowan being his cute fluffdaddy self!

With all that said, this book isn't one to miss. It is a great ending to a very intriguing storyline.

**grm**

Nice conclusion to the series. I really liked Emery and Graham, probably more than the previous couple. Emery was funny, cute and stubborn, while Graham caring and kind. Rowan's leopard side made me laugh and Ari, also if here had less scenes on page, was still a little devil kitty. I still think the book missed many things, there wasn't a lot of romance, the book focused too much only on the experiment part and left open many questions, and the 1st POV annoyed me a lot. Sometimes I just wished the book was shorter, while other times I was having fun reading the shenanigans all the chars were part of. I rated this book 4 stars mostly for Emery and Graham, because I think the other parts of the story didn't really deserve this rating.

Emery takes centre stage in the finale of the Winsford Shifters books. He caught my attention from his first proper introduction with how loyal he was to Quinn despite all that had been done to him.
From the end of book 2, Mercer is gone and Emery and Graham have been captured by stone.
So much goes on, it's almost non stop with lots of secrets being revealed.
Just because it's Emery's book though, it doesn't mean we don't hear from Quinn and Rowan. 4 separate pov's but each necessary.
An absolutely fantastic end to the series, it's not fairytale perfect for the shifters but it is a HEA

The audio was great. I love Ari's voice

It doesn't rain but it pours!

Can no-one catch a break! Things just keep going from bad to worse but this time we're also with Emery and Graham as they get caught up with the bad guy's nasty shifters and things take another turn.

There's way too much to try and process into a coherent review, but I blooming loved it and was very satisfied by all appropriate events!

Once again Alice gave us an amazing conclusion to another wonderfully written series.

I loved how she wrote the developing relationship between Emery and Graham. Their witty banter will leave you laughing out loud and people around you giving you strange looks. My heart absolutely goes out to poor sweet Emery and everything he has overcome in his life. The connection they developed overtime was truly beautiful.

We still get to read about sweet Ari teasing Rowan which are always my favorite parts.

I loved how Alice still gave us multiple povs to bring this story to end. It brought everything to a perfect close.

I love love love this book. I really enjoyed seeing Emery grow through the series! I wish we got more from Graham’s perspective, I still don’t feel like I know him like I do the other 3 main characters. I sure hope Alice comes back to Winsford sometime even if it’s just a short story!

This series has kept me on the edge of my seat as Quinn, Rowan, Graham, and Emery have been trying to escape Mercer, Stone, and the corporation that has funded all of Stone’s research. I loved the ending of this book and am a little sad that it’s over. Here’s hoping that Alice Winters takes pity on us and gives us some short stories or something involving our favorite pack of misfits. And I am still in love with our big goofy Floofdaddy. He is so adorable and goofy when shifted. Quinn and the others will never let him live anything down. (Snicker…stuck in a tree). Emery is slowly realizing he has a place in their pack with Graham’s help and Ari is still pouncing on people. This story has enough danger and excitement to keep you on the edge of your seat but enough laughter and love to keep you going. Another great story!

Still not my favourite series by this author, but this was by far my favourite book of this series.

The romance and sex scenes are lacking, but overall the characters are very lovable and it was nice to see the good guys win.

A lot of plot felt to me like it was left open, but the author stated this would be the last book of the series, so I find myself a bit let down by that.

There is humour, but it’s not absolutely hilarious like most of her other work.

I definitely love Emery, and a lot of moments really stole the show, especially if Ari was there. Graham kind of felt like a placeholder character at first, to be honest. But as the story progressed and Emery opened up to him, we saw more personality that explained why he was Quinn’s second in command. Like the other books, I would’ve liked to see more relationship time with them.

The epilogue was great!

Of Redemption and Vengeance is a wonderful conclusion to the Winsford Shifters series. I have been kept on the edge of my seat while devouring this series.
The action and mayhem continues with more mysteries being cleared up.
It is impossible to keep from falling in love with Emery. His wit and sarcasm is delightful. Graham obviously agrees! These two will melt your heart. I love how Graham is so accepting and understanding of the trauma that Emery has endured. He sees beyond the surface and knows the true heart that lies beneath all of Emery's bluster.
Having the entire cast of characters present and accounted for makes for a terrific story. I can't get enough of Rowan's antics when he is in his shifter form.
What a delightful series this has been!

It’s took me a little longer to get into this one. Especially considering it was to be the completion of this trilogy. Where the previous two just focused on the POV of Quinn and Rowen, this one was centered around Graham and Emery. So the POV switched between the four of them. It worked well but it still left me feeling like it was more scattered.

Emery & Graham <3

Emery and Graham, Emery and Graham, Emery and Graham!!! I’ve been wanting Emery’s story ever since he barreled his way into our lives and it. was. A-MA-ZING. The action was expertly suspenseful, the villains were dastardly evil, and all the threads we’ve been chasing were cleverly knotted and tied into a giant bow. I wish this wasn’t the end of this incredible world but I have hope we’ll visit again and I plan to do a re-read now that all the books are out to search for clues I missed the first time around.

Emery’s past broke my heart into little pieces but oh how tenderly, patiently and perfectly did Graham piece it back together. “…there’s one thing in my life that I know is certain. I will never be alone again, and Graham will always be there for me. He will never turn on me or make feel like the others did. He’s mine. Always and forever...” Gah, I mean how is a person not supposed to tumble head over heels in love for these two? It’s impossible if you ask me and frankly, I don’t want to think about a world where there’s no Rowan, Quinn, Graham or Emery. From boxes to pillows, these phenomenal characters will have you laughing, smiling, cheering and wanting to reach through the pages to hug, or in my case, ruffle the floof of, them all.

The third and final book focuses more on Emery and Graham. We find out more about Emery and who he was before he was experimented on. The main bulk of the story focuses on them and i liked getting to know them better. Quinn, Rowan, Ari, Logan and Brennan are there as well in some side stories. There were several twists and turns in this one. Some i didn't see coming. there was a point that i thought i had something figured out and the author did a fabulous job of twisting it. Loved this series.

This book is a roller coaster ride from start to finish. The author will shake you, spin you, flip you, put on the brakes, then speed right up again and do it all over. There is no break in the action. Once you're in, you're in, and there is no escaping. You can expect to be stressed out, freaked out, paranoid, happy, sad, angry... I mean... this book is intense. It is a very fitting end to the series. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. There is humor, and there is that trademark Alice Winters snark, but expect action, a lot of action, and a little more than a modicum of violence.
