The Rulebreaker

Rate this book
Sloane Baxter is a good girl. She may not have an enviable or even desirable past, but she’s making her future perfect, including all the things she’s dreamed of, a solid home, a job she loves, and a life she’s created despite the hurdles she’s had to leap. Sloane is living her life on her terms.

She doesn’t realize those she trusts are pulling her deeper into a dark world she knows nothing about peopled by some who threaten her safety. Then an encounter with the Vice President of the notorious Ghosttown East Motorcycle Club upends her life and sends her senses reeling. He’s completely wrong for her, but she can’t shake the memory of their encounter.

Adam “Blade” Cody proudly serves as the VP of Ghosttown East MC. He’s a leader, the second in command, and makes his club his first priority. Until Sloane shows up, wreaking havoc and chaos and making him rethink his priorities. Blade’s attraction to the nosy little pain in the neck is overwhelming, but when her past leads her down a path his club knows to avoid, the line in the sand is drawn.

But when Sloane sets off on a risky solo mission to uncover the truth, she’s ill equipped to handle the consequences. The self-proclaimed rule stickler must break all the rules to discover what’s going on around her while Blade must make certain her ignorance of the dark side doesn’t get her hurt.

Blade and Sloane don’t make any sense on paper, but in real life their fates are sealed. And yet their trajectories are heading them toward places that could destroy the life they want to build together.

Amelia Shea writes contemporary romance. She released her debut novel in 2015, and has followed her passion for series romance ever since. Her writing style includes a little sweet, a little sassy and lots of steam. She loves building stories with settings that become comfortable and familiar, and developing characters who feel real, and though they may be flawed, they learn and grow, and finally deserve a happy ending. When she is not writing, she is obsessed with reading (all genres although she does has a soft spot for romance), coffee (it's more of an addiction but she prefers obsession) and perfecting her "y'all" (just a northern girl living in the south).

Quick(ish) Review

I always say I’ll try anything three times and that includes authors. This is my second book by Ms Shea and I’m starting to get a clearer picture of her writing and I’ve got mixed feelings. Let’s suss it all out, shall we?

I’m torn about this because while I see potential with the writing, I’m frustrated with it as well. I think Sloane is a difficult heroine with obvious personality tics but she’s interesting. I felt sympathetic to her and her losses. And she’s not perfect and I like that. She’s stubborn, manipulative, and so rule-bound and concrete in her thinking sometimes that she reminds me of someone on the spectrum.

But it’s exactly those traits that make it difficult for me to see her being with Blade. She will report people for parking infractions but she’s involved with a biker who’s a criminal? As much as the club tries to ease out of certain aspects of their criminal enterprise, they’re still a criminal enterprise. Rule-bound Sloane can handle that? Doesn’t make sense with her characterization, which doesn't really change from beginning to end.

Blade is all in for Sloane but he also allows her to be disrespected more than once. I just felt like there could have been more done to protect her from Con (who I currently can’t stand). I think the editing is not good, and there’s continuity issues that distracted me while reading. I think some thorough proofreading is in order because it's a guarantee to pull me out of the moment when I’m fixated on the poor grammar, misspellings, and incorrect words inserted at the wrong moment.

Having said all this, I read this in a day and I stayed up late to finish it. If you know me, I treasure my sleep but it was compulsive reading. There are definite issues with this story in general, but I am curious about this crew of kinda bad but not that bad guys. I thought I’d take my time but here I am diving into the next book so I’ll give it up to Ms. Shea - she’s got my attention. It’s flawed, general MC content warnings apply, but I’m going to give it another go and see if my opinion of this series gets better or worse. So here’s your conflicted, middle-of-the-road, rambling review. You’re welcome and sorry. 🤷🏻‍♀️

FLOVED it!!

Story: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Trope: opposites attract
Angst: 😱😱
Smexy: 🔥🔥

Absolutely loved everything about this book from the quirky heroine to the lack of a third act breakup, to everything in between. It wasn't super angsty, but still managed to hit me square in the feels to the point that I shed some tears for our plucky and intrepid heroine, lol. Amelia Shea has some major character and world building skills! I've been tearing through her entire backlog and have yet to be disappointed. Lots of breadcrumbs for future books in the series and I'm super excited to see them play out!

This book was a good “rom com” book but Sloane is SOOOOOOOO annoying. She’s a 15 on a 1-10 scale. And blade…. You can’t have an alpha male picking and choosing when to “defend” his woman. He isn’t an alpha male if he won’t PUBLICLY defend his woman.

And how the “fell in love” so quickly and she overlooked the illegal activities when she has the cops on speed dial…. Too many flaws. Not enough elaboration on certain situations. Brushed off. Poor writing style for this book. Everything about it felt rushed.

I really liked this one and a big part of that was due to Sloane. She made Vada look normal. There is something about an awkward, derpy woman who ends up with a guy in a MC that apparently is my new catnip. I love how these guys realize what a precious gem they have, even as the woman drives them nuts and they do what they can to protect and shield her from life.

Sloane's life has not been easy, yet she is such a good person, the kind who sees the cup as half full, who is always helping people, but also willing to give it to you if you fuck around her as we witnessed in the opening of the book. I had no problem with her going after the guys by way of East. I also laughed at how they all were poleaxed by her, especially Blade when he saw her ride.

There were some bumps along the way, but they got them worked out. I liked how Sloane was always doing the right thing, even if it wasn't the easy thing, like with the prospects girlfriend and checking on Blade when she received new info, that was actually only half info. The ending to this one made me smile, loved that Sloane finally broke her record with a little help!

It took me a minute and I didn’t really think I was going to like Sloane, but I was wrong, so very wrong. Blade described her best, “batshit fucking crazy”. I LOVED this book!

Seriously, if you want to read fantastic writing with a balance of club and personal, this hits all the buttons.

Sloane

She follows the rules but will be a rule breaker with East VP Blade. A fun hot book maybe Wren and Con next?

Sloane is the worst heroine I’ve read in a while. She has major trauma so I get the root of her issues but that does not excuse her actions. She’s manipulative, using guilt and fear to get her way. There’s nothing she cares more about than policing everyone but herself, not even Blade is more important than her self righteous glee. People attempt to set firm boundaries with her and she just simply doesn’t care. There is NO WAY the club would’ve tolerated her let alone share club business!!! Blade just rolled over for her even in the most extreme situation when he really should’ve left her. And even after she does something unforgivable her thoughts are all about getting Blade to give her the information she thinks she deserves to know. Sloane’s “quirkiness” does not make up for her other actions. I can’t even call her TSTL because she knows exactly what she’s doing and how messed up it is but she’s still the one that knows best. It’s kinda sad because I would’ve really enjoyed this if Sloane could’ve been not so in your face. Blade, the club, the side plot with their plans for going sorta straighter are all good. Just wish we had a much different heroine.

I love this MC and this series so much. Blade is a freaking dream of a hero. Sloan is a lot, like a lot a lot. This would have been a five star read but she bothered me just a little too much and we never got an answer for what drove her obsession with everyone following the exact rules and her need to constantly report things to the cops. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE quirky and weird heroines, they tend to be my favorites. Sloan was just a tad too ridiculous for me to fully enjoy. Yes, she was a bit like Vada - but I didn’t love her the way I loved Vada. Having said all that I’m looking forward to the overarching mystery of Con’s mom gets solved throughout this series. I’m not sure if Ice or Con is next….or maybe Tracer or Brew? I want to learn more about this nomad brother Trick, and of course Gunner needs a HEA. Great installment in a fabulous series.

Sloane Baxter is one to follow the rules and in doing so she often shares her unsolicited opinion to others who don't follow. That is how she meets Adam "Blade" Cody a biker who is entertained by her antics. When they meet a second time, Blade asks her out and he quickly realizes Sloane is a bit nuts and quirky, he is mesmerized. What Blade doesn't understand though is Sloane's attachment to The bowery. The Bowery is part of the Underground and his MC East is trying to get out of the racket the Underground deals in. Can he trust Sloane and protect her at the same time, even if it is from herself?

Loved loved loved... Sloane is a hoot, this had a lot of laugh out loud moments that had me rereading this book a couple of days later. She is tenacious and there is one thing she has in common with the club which has you chuckling when she points it out. Wonderful series.

The fmc was a quirky scooter riding busy body. I loved her.

It was adorable that the mmc knew this about her from the beginning, and kinda knew she was it for him. The side story was really good and engaging also.

Sloane was so annoying; less "a stickler for rules" and more a "Karen".

It wasn't that she physically/mentally couldn't let people get away with breaking rules or lying; as an autistic person I often find myself at odds with people (especially people in positions of authority) who break or skirt the rules for their own ends/cause they can and it physically makes me itchy and uncomfortable. When it's pushed so far that those same people breaking or ignoring the rules HURT other people or make their life more difficult, I just simply CAN'T ignore it. I get angry like they're hurting ME. I find it hard to lie, hate when other people lie, and often can't read a situation when someone wants me to cover for them or that certain information isnt common knowledge and (unknowingly) tell the truth, pissing people off without MEANING to.

But Sloane isn't like that at all. She very much KNOWS how annoying, invasive, and pushy she is and she believes she's constantly in the right even when she's clearly not. In fact, there were times she was going to walk away from a situation and someone would say something that would piss her off, offend her, or she simply needed the outcome to suit HER needs, so she'd turn right back around and keep pushing and pushing until someone got in trouble.

Or she got what she wanted.

She was also perfectly fine bending the rules, if not outright breaking them when it was for something SHE wanted: Oh, the sheriff is saying your shed is on your neighbor's property and to move it asap? "Please officer let me talk to the neighbors, maybe they'll let me keep it there. Or maybe I could pay them to keep it there and not move it!" All the while having ALWAYS KNOWN that shed wasn't on her property. She had literally 4 years to move it and she didn't but when she's called out for not following the law, to rectify the situation immediately- which she wants EVERYONE ELSE to do- she balks and tries to talk her way out of it (or at the very least more time she wasn't given before to move it).

It was annoying.

Especially when this didn't change at all through the story. She was the exact same person she was at the end as she was at the beginning. If anything everyone else changed to suit HER.

And, once again, it was annoying.

Hated the heroine, plain and simple. What can I say, I just don't like heroines who call the cops four times a week to rat on their neighbors for "suspicious behavior" and local zoning violations. And then she ends up with a biker who's probably breaking the law in some way every other day.

Pot? Kettle? Hellooo???

iffy about the heroine.

This is a nice addition to the Ghosttown East series, but I just can’t quite decided whether the heroine, plucky club manager, Sloane, is annoying or not. The premise is that Sloane is a busybody and serial meddler who meets Ghosttown East MC’s VP, Blade, when she’s snitching on some troublemakers in town and instantly sparks fly between the two. This is the second book in the series and the second time there’s instalove executed really well, because you get the sense the characters actually get to know one another beyond instant attraction (in this book, Sloane is more known than Blade, but that makes sense because she has a very complex and traumatic back story). Sloane’s meddling ways lead her into danger and potentially jeopardizes the safety of the MC and her relationship with Blade.

I overall liked this, I just had some issues with some of the characters and how they were portrayed. Sloane was very annoying admittedly, but at times there was wayyyyy too much bass in the tone of some club members speaking to her that went unaddressed. I think it’s in line with the dark vibe of an MC romance and once again this was very much dark romance lite- there IS illegal activity and there is a lot of trauma in this that could be potentially triggering especially in the area of being orphaned and getting lost in the foster system and also the death of a parent. Reader discretion if this may be triggering to you is definitely advised. That said it’s not unbearably dark and it does capture the MC romance vibe very well and in a manner that is less problematic than most.

I’m not sure what was up with Sloane’s characterisation- she was part “Karen” and part potentially neurodiverse… it was difficult to suss out what her deal was but she was definitely unique as a character and I will remember her.

MC romance has never been a favorite of mine because it naturally tends to gear more toward dark themes than romance and I'm not a dark romance reader girlie. I've read a few I truly liked in the past but with the years passing my reading taste has shifted to more sweet than grit and I'm happy for books like these.
It has all the makings of a MC romance, the setting and the culture, the Brotherhood theme, morally gray characters but it's running low on club conflicts (without being detrimental to the angst!) set in a small town with a rom-com feel to it, probably because of the female main character, Sloane, the embodiment of quirky protagonist. This series is very characters centric, which I appreciate, the balance between club business and romance is perfect for this reader.

The meet-cute between Sloane and Blade was amazing and had me smiling. I truly enjoyed the insta-connection/like/lust/love thing between them and loved how Blade was protective of Sloane.

This wasn't perfect and I could start nitpicking but the fact is that I enjoyed my time reading this and immediately started the next one and then next. Yes, I'm writing this and currently reading book 4. By the way, book 3 is even better than book 2 and something tells me book 4 could top all of them. We'll see!

Love the BY East boys

Well that was unexpected! Who would have thought the VP Blade would fall for the weird quirky girl.

Blade sees Sloane and it's pretty much game over for his singledom. She's kind, driven, curious and a bit weird! I loved her! Love seeing a tough guy get challenged and loved the way he was so protective and possessive over her. Laughs came in the form of Graine's pussy drinks and Sloane's devotion to get the club involved with her charity run. I was laughing out loud at her dogged determination and the way she got on everyone's last nerve.

Sloane's curious nature and some issues with Con causes some drama. But as we see more of Con's backstory we can understand where some of his attitude comes from... We also get a hint of his love interest, I can't wait to see that boy get owned! I'm hoping and praying that this book also gave us a hint of Ice's future girl! That one will be interesting! So exciting!

Love this series as much as the original GT Riders! 5 stars!

Blade and Sloane

What a wonderful story this was, i absolutely loved this. And Sloane was such a character , i loved her personality and her innocence in the quest to help foster children and women. She really was a persistant women and took to heart letting everyone know if they done wrong. I had so many laugh out loud moments with this story and the thing i loved even more was that Blade loved her the way she was with all her crazyies just like his mother lol.
I thought the first book of Ghosttown riders was excellent but the East are so much better in a relaxed sort of way. The East with the new Pesident in tow are making it better for the men to settle down and to go all legal, and along the way there always has to be someone who tries to pull some sort of stunt.
A must read story, and this book once more has every thing in it from laughs to the dark to the crazy. This author is fast becomming a must read of her books.

Sweet tale and good romance

First time reading this author and I enjoyed the book. The lead female is hilarious and caring to a fault. You will be LoL and if you are around other people, they will wonder why. Sloane is so adorable. At first I thought that she was annoying but she totally grew on me and now I am a big fan of her and her MC alpha Blade. Sloane has had some awful things happen to her, but she still gets up and has a positive attitude. So she can just be her sweet and naive self. She deserves some good in her life and Blade is finding out that Sloane is the only one for him. Just going to include this, it is a MC book so along with the sweetness of the romance comes the villain, abuse, and the danger-violence inherent upon this genre of romance. Read On!

This book was so sweet.
Sloane has some manic pixie dream girl tendencies and sometimes not entirely likable. But I also can't hate her. She is a stickler for the rules but the rules are made up by her self. She seems to have a very strict code of conduct that only she truly understands which makes for some pretty funny interactions. She is truly loco in her own little way. Getting super worked up about how people show respect/disrespect and not swearing infront of parents. But totally chill with having a boyfriend with a criminal background. She is pedantic and overly nosy but also a girls girl and sympathetic of reform. This is Sloane's world and we are simply living in it.
Blade is so sweet and genuinely loves her crazy. Most of the time he is left in bafflement and I love it every time.

Some might find Sloane annoying but luckily I'm not one for them.

Another Quirky, Fun 5 Star Romance!

I've read every book in the Ghosttown series, and now both for Ghosttown East. This one was every bit as excellent as the rest.

Amelia Shea has a knack for writing interesting characters and Sloane does not disappoint. I just lived watching her relationship with Blade and the MC unfold. Some MC series become the same story after a few books, just with differently named characters. Ms. Shea is able to introduce completely new storylines with fun characters in every book and yet still also shows us a gritty, tough world where the lines of ethics and legality are blurred. I just love this author and the world she has filled with unique, one if a kind people.

I'm enjoying this series so far! Sloane and Blade were definitely opposites attract, but it was cute.

Two things I had issues with:
1) This book was not edited/proofread nearly as well as the first one. There were numerous grammar issues throughout the whole thing. A few I can deal with, but this got a little much. I enjoyed the story, but the grammar issues took me out of the book more times than I would have liked.

2) The man on the cover of the book looks nothing like how Blade is described. I started ignoring the book's description because I look at the cover so often when picking up the book, that I can't imagine him any other way.

I will be continuing the series, and I really hope the grammar issues get better.

The beginning was amazing – I liked the introduction to both of the main characters, how they met and their interactions. I liked their relationship for the most part, but I also wanted to see more of them interacting with the club members, especially Sloane who by the end apparently grows on everyone but you don’t see it. I was kind of disappointed that .

While this book still doesn’t have as many scenes with the side characters as I’d like, I liked what was shown enough to maybe continue with the series, but probably not go back and read the previous books.

Setting: US
MC names: Sloane Baxter, Adam Cody
POV: both, 3rd person

Hello Blade !!!!!

First time reading this author was the "Enforcer" Roan's story and now I'm just hooked, I'm a really big fan of MC Biker stories and just like the first book in this series it did not disappoint, the plot continues from the first book with great characters both main and supporting strong alpha men and the women who capture their heart. Ok but let's not forget the club girls what's a good MC story without some club girl drama 😊😊 just saying, anyway this another great read in the lives of the Ghosttown East MC can't wait for the next brothers story.

Freaking love the GTRMC no matter what the charter.
Another fast past action packed read from Amelia.

Book 2 in the East charter and Blade don't know what hit him.
Blade is content with easy p$$$y and protecting his brothers. What he doesn't count on is the cute little rulebreaker that is about to bulldoze into his heart.

Salone has been a loner since she was 3 years old no family, no friends just a real pain in the a$$, and aslong as people follow the rules m then she is happy.
Salone maybe an acquired taste but when she sets eyes on Blade all her rules go flying out the window.

Blade and Sloan

I really think this is going to be my all time favorite story, well maybe until I read the next one. I totally adored Sloan and her law abiding ways, but especially what she did for Everly. Blade enjoyed her naivety from the beginning and especially her riding her scooter and thinking she was in a class with them riding their Harley's. She is one persistent and tough young lady and I have to say that I grinned several times throughout this story. A few twist and turns throughout, but a fabulous story. Happy reading.

MC ROMANCE BRILLIANCE…

This book has one of my ALL TIME favorite heroines and I READ ALOT. She should look ridiculous or not bright but that isn’t true. Ugh I love her. Our bad boy hero just loves the crazy she brings to the table probably because her beautiful heart shines brighter. Her story is one of resiliency. Even with the somewhat tragic childhood she had she maintained a goodness that sometimes looked naive but dig deeper in the story and you will see that isn’t true. Soooo good.

Book 2 with the feels

Loved this book just as I've loved every other book of Amelia Shea's. I love Sloane's quirky, rule abiding personality - something see gets from a lifetime of foster care. And i love that Blade realizes she reminds him of his mom, both good women.

I'm completely curious who will be next, Con or Ice, but I'm also curious about Gunner and Tracer. So this is a series i will be keeping up with.

I needed more

This had so much potential! These books are so well written but in this case I couldn’t get past the characters. I loved Sloane, she was an amazing h what I didn’t like was the H and his lack of standing up for her. We had another member get away with being a j*rk to her I just couldn’t after that. What more is that he did it repeatedly. I wanted more for her! I hate to say this but she deserved better.

Really freakin great!!! I think I was getting a little tired of MC reads, but so glad I picked this up!!! I’ve pretty really enjoyed every MC book this author has written. I’m soooo excited to read about the others!!! Sloane was crazy and a pain in the ass lol, but still endearing bc you know she was coming from a good place and stuck to her guns. And I just adored how in spite of all that, Blade was enamored with her. It was really great.

Blade and Sloane

This was a good read. Amelia Shea always does such a good story line. I didn't like Sloane at all though. Blade is why I gave this a 3 star because he made me enjoy this story. Sloane is extremely annoying and nosy. I thought she would be a hoot after reading her description but she isn't. The plot makes it worth it since I want to continue reading this series and is the only reason i finished the book.

I like that I laughed quite a few times. I definitely have very little in common with the heroine but I was still able to connect to her and found her funny. I think it's because at the core of her "crazy" is loyalty, kindness and a need to understand people. I found myself asking myself quite often if I would like her in real life. The answer ended up being a yes... if she lives very very very far from where I live and only see her once in every 6 months. :)

A good female lead

I liked Sloane's character, a mixture of naivety, innocence, determination and nosiness. Always causing some sort of mayhem or trouble and wearing her heart on her sleeve for all to see.

I do wish there had been more interaction with Blade's parents though as his mother sounded wonderful.

As each biker gets his story, the thread that holds the books together weaves through the pages as the reader learns more about the MC.
