its been so long since ive read a book about pirates, so ive been looking forward to picking up this sequel. but ugh, im so bummed about this one.

i didnt do a reread, but i remember ‘on these black sands’ being full of open seas adventure, questionable pirates, and a magical fae cross-over. it was everything i wanted from this kind of story. but i guess my memories led to too high of expectations for this sequel because i didnt enjoy this one as much.

its just soooo slow. omg. like, tediously slow. not sure if its is due to the several POVs, the long length, or just the lack of a plot that needs fast pacing in general. i mean, technically, the overall series story arc does move forward, but its only accomplished in the last 10%. and so, because of that, this just fills like filler to me.

but i guess if you prefer more character-based books, then none of this will be an issue for you. but i was personally hoping for a much more exciting plot.

"Many of the stories passed around the Aisling were based on true events that had been twisted into outlandish myths, but some had been so horrifying to begin with that no elaboration could have made them any more frightening."

This is a five POV book, told from the POVs of Aoife, Declan, Cait, Tommy and Maura.

First of all I love the representation of strong women and female pirate captains in this book. There are women on the council and in general the women hold more power in this book then I have seen in other pirate books so far. Aoife is strong willed, snarky and can definitely stand her own as well as Cait and Maura. With them three we get independent women as FMCs who try to choose their own destiny but also don´t feel like a copy of each other but rather have their own personality to them.

I would side side character wise there are not that many in this book, because we have a lot of main characters. One side character I absolutely loved was pirate captain Halloran and her crew. She had a really well thought out backstory and I found her character really intriguing, I hope to see more of her in the third book of the series.

Plotwise we get krakens, sirens, pirates, fae and magic; what could you want more!? Even sea dragons are mentioned, so I hope some of them will be in the third book. I loved the world building, which definitely got even more detailed in this book and I loved to learn about the new places and have the journey really start. We also get great romance plots, three at that. We have one betrayed love story, one Forbidden romance and one unrequited love. All of them are definitely more slow burn, but I think with three romance plots and them all having different tropes, there is a bit for everybody in here.
The plot twists were really good, and I didn´t expect most of them although some I could see coming. The pacing was good, the book didn´t feel too slow or too fast paced; only the ending felt a little bit rushed to me and I feel like the "conflict" at the end was solved a bit too quickly and mysteriously, so this is where I deduct half a star.

Overall it was an amazing read that I truly enjoyed and this series remains one of the best pirate romantasy books I have read so far. I can´t wait for the next book to release.

This was such an incredible and surprising sequel to On These Black Sands!

The author gives us more unique points of view to the story. Now not only do we follow through the eyes of Declan, his sister Cait and Aiofe, but also through Tommy's and Maura's eyes.

The story starts right where the first book ended, with Declan being captured by Callum and heading to the deadly Black Sound. The crew, alongside the fae sisters, are pursuing in hopes to reach them in time. I loved learning more about the fae sisters, their powers, and of course, the forbidden insta-love romance between Maura and Tommy 😍 although I did miss the interactions between my loves Declan and Aiofe in this book.

The setting is majority at sea, with deadly sea creatures such as sirens and the kraken... It gave me such pirates of the Caribbean vibes! ❤️ Also Cait, back on land, reminds me of Jamie Fraser's sister in Outlander, I absolutely love her chapters.

I cannot wait for the last book, with These last Breaths 😩❤️

I was blessed to be offered the opportunity to Beta Read for Vanessa Rasanen's From These Dark Depths, Book 2 in the Aisling Seas Series. I absolutely loved On These Black Sands and was skeptical if book 2 would live up to my standards. Let me tell you, this book far exceeded my expectations and deserves a higher rating than just 5 stars!

***********************Spoilers if you have not read book 1****************************

The story continues with Declan and Aoife's journey after rescuing the 3 fae sisters from the council's grasp. What was so great about this book is that Vanessa really went into great detail in following not only our very snarky couple, Declan and Aoife but we get more points of view from several other main characters. The story takes you into the minds from the many numerous people that you met in book one but in such detail. The different POV's and storylines really take this book to a higher level that will have you needing book 3 ASAP. I love Vanessa's writing style. She has a way of bringing you into the story and wanting to stay with her lovable characters. You get to meet some new ones that I fell in love with...Hello Alder..Im looking at you....and I can see something big brewing on the horizon. The conclusion of this book answers many questions but leaves enough open to where I want more. This book is amazing and I cannot recommend it enough. I give this book 5 swoon worthy stars. If I could give this book additional stars I would, It is that good.

When I finished On These Black Sands a few months ago, I was devastated by the ending. Lucky for me, I was one of the lucky people who got an eARC for From These Dark Depths. As soon as my schedule allowed it, I jumped into this book. Foolish of me to think I would find quick release. Nope. This book made me work to see the things I wanted to see. Does this make me happy? Yes. We readers are nothing if not sick, masochistic lions.

Having Declan and Aoife parted during this book was painful, but the buildup was worth it. Aoife’s journey throughout the series is my favorite, because you see her transform into a strong young woman and battle her insecurities and guilt. But my favorite chapters may or may not have been Cait’s, and it may or may not have to do with a certain pirate who calls her “love.” I am weak! I also enjoyed Tommy and Maura’s POVs. Their interactions were either adorable or intense or both, yet I don’t ship them as hard as I do Declan and Aoife or Cait and Adler just yet. I want to see a little more happen between them. The drama teased at the end of the book will definitely do the trick.

This sequel is worthy of its predecessor, with a high-stakes and adventurous storyline that confirms the Aisling Sea series as my absolute favorite high-seas fantasy. I love the way the author combines magic, adventure and pirates. I love that the pirates act like pirates—as in, they’re morally gray characters, some with darker shades than others. Please, please, please, read this series!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an eARC. Opinions are my own.

Fans of On These Black Sands pick up after a nail biting cliff hanger, but it's not what you'd expect.

Following five different point of views, From These Dark Depths is riddled with twists and turns. The amount of emotional stress that is built up and up and up again will have you on the edge of your seat.

The stakes are raised again and again. As questions get answered, more questions arise. The new characters that you meet and the stories they harbor are heartbreaking and compelling.

And let's just say, this Team Declan girl is now very unsure of which pirate deserves the most attention... maybe all three. These super swoon worthy pirates and these strong, resilient women are about to take you on your next big adventure. Hold on to the railing of the ship because you don't want to let go of this one.

Helpppp I've falling in love with another series.. OBSESSED.

After being completely held hostage by book 1 I was wrapped up in book 2 the moment I picked it. Tommy my cinnamon roll, Declan my sexy pirate *heart eyes*. I absolutely love Rasanen's writing, the outline of her plot, the reasoning behind the details, and the characters.

If you love reading about mental health rep, this is for you! I was in awe with the mental health situations presented. The romance *chef's Kiss*, we get some steamy moments in this one... here I go again: *sigh* Tommy. One thing that caught me a bit off guard was the instalove cause I'm usually not big on that aspect but the author did an amazing job at putting that together and making the reader fall in love with the development.

The plot had me stuck to the book, I love the Fae story and the integration of the evi sirens. Aoife's character development in this book was absolutely spectacular. She demonstrated so much of what she could be and what she wants to become. Working thru her anxiety and trauma. Same for Declan and Tommy, all dealing with so many painful memories that they had to evolve from and shape into what they needed to be.

PLEASE READ THIS SERIES! I can't wait for book 3!! Ahhh give me...

Huge thanks to Vanessa for gifting me a copy. All opinions ae my own.

”Hope won’t save you in the end, not when you look into the eyes of the siren queen and she drags all mistakes from these dark depths. Your hope will die in that sound right along with your body.”

After starting this book way back in August, I immediately enjoyed it but somewhere along the line I fell into a major reading slump. Didn't really read for months on end and when I did I just couldn't get into the book because my moods were all over the place. Then 2023 started and somehow I finally ended up being in a better reading mood, and so I decided to pick this story back up again and what do you know?

I was right back where I left off and finished it off in no time. Just couldn't stop reading anymore and even bought the e-book yesterday as well, on top of having a HC copy that I was reading during the day, so that I could finish the book in bed last night haha.

Gods, how I love these characters! Love reading multiple pov's so that you get an overall picture of several types of people, settings, politics, background story/history etc. Loved it so much to be a part of this world again and am sad that I finished and have to wait for the next one now haha.

Did think that some scenes were maybe a bit too easily resolved maybe but it wasn't bothering me though. But I couldn't quite give it the entire 5 stars, but a solid 4 stars is definitely worth it. Maybe even 4,5 when I get around to re-read this book in the future.

The writing, the beautiful quotes, the depth of these characters... I love this series so much already and am so excited to see what's going to happen in the next instalment.

3.5 ⭐️

We left the characters on quite a cliffhanger in the previous book, which made the sequel very much anticipated. The only way I could describe this was as anticlimactic. Throughout the duration of the book we, Aoife, Declan and us the readers, are dreading and looking forward to the embedding conversation that will either break them or make them. Yet when they do finally find each, mind you they only had 5% of the book to be together and to fix whatever needed to be fixed, it doesn’t happen. There was a great amount of internal turmoil, however, it was not properly communicated between these two. I believe the author made the decision to “fix” their relationship by using distance to make them forget and forgive these betrayals and mistakes. And I didn’t like the direction it went. But I’m glad they’re now on the same page.

Another con was that everything was too slow for my liking. However, I enjoyed getting to know the new set of characters and their flare which contributed more to the world and the complexity of the plot. We’ve got a couple of new ships that was lovely to see them flourish. Everyone played an integral part of the overall scheme of things. And all of that guarantees the unraveling that’s going to happen in the final book which is going to be chaotic and thrilling.

I’m looking forward to reading with these last breaths.🔥

“Refusing to believe it doesn’t make it any less true”

I really loved this book, I really enjoyed book one, On These Black Sands so be thrust back into the world of Cregah and Morshan was amazing, I love any book that has
pirates, sea adventure and swashbuckling, and I had been highly anticipating this sequel for such a long time and it really did not disappoint, to me the cliff-hanger from book one was dealt with brilliantly, and this book to me far exceeded expectations and
to me was better than the first in the series. The world and character building is fantastic and the relationships between characters were further developed, with the
introduction of new characters and pairing, and honestly after meeting Adler I would love my own deserter pirate please and thank you.

I feel the plot was more established and developed throughout this book, and I just spent majority of the book willing for Aoife and Tommy to find Declan and the dagger and put an end to all the councils behaviours!

This series still remains very original,
and I liked the fact that although there are developing relationships the steam is kept pretty low, just that one scene towards the end of the book! I really like the inclusion of
the map and pronunciation pages, they are still a unique and helpful addition, as there were times I was forgetting how to pronounce particular characters especially Aoife.

The book is also set from a multiple point of view, we continue reading from Aoife, Declan and Cait’s perspective, but there is now the addition of Maura and Tommy’s
perspective, which I was completely there for, as Tommy is one of my favourite characters so to see his perspective was wholesome and I really liked his chapters, I still feel like Maura has more to give so for now she is an okay character, but her
behaviour at the end irritated me so I am not sure where my feelings towards her harbour

I am so thankful to see that there will be a third book out in August 2023 called With These Last Breaths, and I am completely on tenterhooks waiting for that book as I really need to know what’s happened to Callum, and Adler and Lucan! (no spoilers in
this review people)

I would highly recommend this book and series to fans of pirate adventures, young adult, and enemies to lovers. I am so glad this series is exceeding my expectations, and I honestly cannot wait for the next book in this series, I would just mention that there are a few violent scenes and gruesome deaths that some many find uncomfortable

I’m so honored I was able to beta read the second installment of this series! First let me say I love Vanessa and her talents as a writer really shine in this book.
Her eye to detail and character development along with romance was everything I needed.

The multiple POVs helped me get a sense of each character on a more deeper level. All I need are Adler chapters in the third book! Because move over Tommy, I believe Adler is now my pirate boy toy. Blonde, sassy, and saying love all the time?! Just take my heart now Mr. pirate.

The Aisling gets even more intense with the fae and their powers being more prominent. Along with the Kraken (which is my favorite mythical creature btw) and sirens! The siren queen, Triss, blew my socks off with her villainous powers and beauty.

What I loved most though is Aoife and Tommy’s development. Aoife doesn’t have Declan as she navigates really how to live the pirate life, make responsible decisions, and how to deal with her anxiety. Her growth was so important to the story! And Tommy. My baby Tommy. Seeing him taking the role as captain and navigating his feelings towards Maura, talking about tugging at the heart strings.

Oh, and I loveeee Cait. I think she’s now my favorite female character. As a leader, she is just so inspiring.

Now for the conclusion of my review, let’s just say the ending had my jaw dropping open and yelling at Vanessa. So except another doozy cliffhanger folks.

I got the honor of beta reading Rasanen’s second installment of the Aisling Sea.

Fans of OTBS will love the sequel. Pirates, fae, sirens, romance and a kraken…fantasy lovers and pirates lovers alike can find something to love in this story.

***spoiler warning for On These Black Sands***

In book two we follow Tommy, Aoife and the three fae sisters as they race to rescue Declan from Captain Grayson, all in pursuit of the mysterious enchanted dagger in the Black Sound. At the same time Rasanen reveals more of the endeavors of the rebel group Rogue Sands through Cait’s point of view.

This is a bit grittier than the previous installment in this series, but it is a pirate fantasy adventure after all.

Some of my favorite scenes involve Declan’s trademark snark and banter.

My favorite character is still Cait but Alder is high on my list as well.

Rating: 3.5 stars / Spice rating: 1 pepper

While FROM THESE DARK DEPTHS maintains the character-driven nature of the series, the plot in this second installment is more high-stakes and adventurous compared to the first, seeing as Aoife and the crew are racing against time to save Declan. And yet, the pacing is still quite slow, allowing the readers to get to know the characters on an even deeper level, to see new dynamics unfold, and to wallow in torture with every page that Declan is in enemy hands.

One of the things I enjoyed most about this second book is the growth we see in Aoife as a character. I appreciated her maturity in how she dealt with the reveal concerning Declan at the end of the first book, and I admired her strength. I also appreciated seeing a darker side to pirates through Callum, who in ways is Declan’s dark counterpart. My favorite character, however, remains Cait. She’s strong, independent, fierce, and the Rogue storyline is one that continues to interest me, especially once it introduces us to Adler, a “new” character who is none other than the pirate who fell in love with Lani and is now seeking revenge against the council. Among the characters, he’s definitely the one whose motives interest me the most.

This book allowed us to get to know a little more about the fae as well, though Maura’s is my least favorite storyline as of now. A lot of it has to do with the instalove that sees her as its protagonist alongside Tommy. Many of the couples in this series develop an instant connection, but while for the others it works, I didn’t see it between Maura and Tommy. Perhaps seeing them interacting more meaningfully before their feelings bloomed would have helped me accept this romance arc better.

Pirates, sirens, and the kraken. We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto. This is a land of stark beauty, brutal violence, and gritty loyalty.

This is book two in the Aisling Sea trilogy. When I realized I was about to read and review this novel with no prior knowledge of the first book in the series, I backtracked and started at the beginning with book one, On These Black Sands. I am so glad I did, as this would have been a difficult read to jump right into.

The author has created a fantastic and barbaric world where pirates abound, and mythical creatures exist. Yet even in this world, people are still people: some lie, betray, cheat, abuse, and murder. Others are kind, generous, loyal, and trustworthy. Most lie somewhere in between.

Declan is one of those characters that seems to be in the middle ground. As the youngest pirate captain on the Aisling Sea, he has garnered a reputation for ruthlessness. He has done the bidding of the Council, including killing for them on demand. Yet in his depths, he is neither a thief nor a murderer. He is a man of great compassion, loyalty, and honor who has done what he must to survive. He now finds himself in the brig of another pirate's ship, headed toward his certain death at the hands of the siren queen. Things could be better for him.

Aoife, a runaway Council heir and the love of Declan's life, is racing to catch up with Declan in an attempt to save him. She's on Declan's ship with his crew and three powerful fae sisters whom they helped escape the ruthless hands of the Council.

Tommy's eyes shone with a haunting mix of determination, fear, worry, and anger. "We fight, Aoife. You fight. Until someone wins, you fight."

I once heard an author describe how the second book in a trilogy was the hardest to write, and the least enjoyable to read. She claimed that the first book gives the reader the feeling of the story, its characters, and its conflicts. The final book has all the fun stuff- the big action, the big moments, and the big resolution. The middle book has to tie all these things together. That's how this book feels. It starts slowly, as the stages are set. The cast of characters, while richly developed and diverse, is also large. Key players are now spread across the map in different locations. Each chapter finds us with a different character's point of view in another location. It's a bit muddy and nearly mindboggling at first.

But a few chapters in, the story catches its stride and takes off at a gallop. The goals become clear, the action more intense, and the hope palpable. Suddenly, it's easy to remember why you're invested in the success of these characters.

There is much to love about this novel and series. While several characters struggle with the ability to trust, others show them the strength and beauty in doing just that. There is passion, loyalty, courage, and honor to be found here, along with those who would seek to destroy others for the sake of power.

I was happy to see that the author created a map of her world, and also provided readers with a pronunciation guide. Most readers will find these quite helpful. For best enjoyment, I recommend starting with book one rather than picking it up in the middle of the story. For fans of action, fantasy, myths, and even heraldry, this is a well-written and engrossing tale.

I loved this sequel. It pretty much starts where the first one left off, meaning you are jumping straight back into the action.

This book has the additional points of view from Tommy and Maura and a pirate with a grudge to settle happens upon Cait and Lucan.

When it comes to Cait, I'm on team pirate.

Maura's situation kind of mirrors Aoife's in that she isn't really free to love and has to do "what's right for their people". But I'm glad both are able to recognise the absurdity of their situation and make up their own minds about what they want.

While trying to rescue Declan from Callum's clutches, Aoife and the crew get help from unlikely pirates as they face the ferocious Kraken and the deadly sirens and they won't stop fighting until somebody wins!

It ends on another cliff hanger and the next one isn't out until next summer!! 😭

So, so excited to have been granted an ARC from Vanessa to review! Thank you so much!

The next installment for the Aisling Sea series and told from five POVs, From These Dark Depths pulls you right back into the amazing world of pirates, fae, magic, and adventure! This book continues to add and build on the already stunning world created by Vanessa Rasanen and the story becomes more complex and intense.

I loved Cait and Tommy in the first book so I was incredibly excited to get more from their POVs! Cait is so strong and just a wonderful female character, I can’t get enough of her. Declan was my favorite from the beginning of book 1 and learning more about him and his dark secrets just made me fall deeper in love with him. FTDD continued my love for Declan but now I’m also falling for Tommy AND Adler! I just. I want them all. Can I have all three?? Aoife’s growth in this book was such a joy to read, I’m so proud of how far she’s come and being able to read from Maura’s POV was wonderful.

Vanessa masters the art of multiple POVs – giving us so much detail and diving in on each character without it ever becoming jumbled or confusing. As the world continues to open up I fall more in love with all the characters and I became even more deeply invested in each of them.

If you love adventure, pirates, morally grey characters, slow burn, and swoon worthy lines, you have to pick up this series!

"Life was instead a grotesquely beautiful combination of pain and love, tragedy and triumph"

I feel like this quote accurately sums up the entire book.

- Pirates
- Fae
- Slow Burn
- Insta Love (done right 😉)
- Forced Proximity
- Found Family
- Multiple POVs

This book was even better than the first one!! While I longed for Aoife and Declan to be reunited, I loved following the other characters. I loved watching Tommy grow into his own mistakes and all, he's the cinnamon roll character we all love. I loved watching Aoife learn to forgive, and grow. I enjoyed the journey so much. It gave us Kraken, Sirens, Fae, Pirate ruthlessness, and just so much excitement!

I love having an awkward main character that stumbles through the world. Aoife is clumsy and awkward and full of anxiety and just so so relatable!

Vanessa tore my heart out with some of these side characters though, but what's a good book without some emotional damage. So looking forward to book 3 and I'm making all of my friends read this series! I'll forgive Vanessa for the many cliffhangers she left us on so long as I get all my answers 😂

I received this book as a beta reader and LET ME TELL YOU. It didn't disappoint. Not in the slightest.
Let's start with the characters. our main ones from book 1, On These Black Sands are Declan, Cait and Aoife. BUT there are two more point of views. And I was waiting on baited breath for these two additional characters. I won't say who because I'm NOT going to spoil this treat.
There is so much character development in this book, it's absolutely mind blowing.
The plot....what can I say about the plot....IT'S FULL OF SECRETS...like Regina George's hair in Mean Girls..but seriously. The plot will have your ass lifted off of your seat because you can't even sit on the edge. There are so many revelations-some which I saw coming and some that I DID NOT.
But this book sucked me in right from the very freaking beginning. Vanessa Rasanen can write every single trope and make it absolute perfection. If you haven't read the first, hurry your ass up and do so, so you can start on this beast!

“I forgive you.”

Have I told you this is my favorite pirate series?! Yes. Oh well. I’m nothing if not consistent 😎 Sooooooo, all these POVs were heaven. I did miss Declan and Aoife together but the reward for all the angst and pain and longing… it was *chef’s kiss* 🥺 Cait is my soul sister. And Adler the unexpected character I never thought I would get and yet the one I needed the most. Those chapters GAVE ME LIFE, people. You don’t understand, love. You couldn’t possibly 🙈 My heart was racing like a madwoman during that town hall and I need - NEED!!!! - book 3 right now just so I can understand what happened. What’s going on?! It can’t be. I refuse. I will not have it. Nope. He can’t. He must not! Ahhhhh. This pain won’t go away 😭😭😭

Moment of truth right now: I’m not crazy for Maura 👀 I don’t know… I’m all team fae but all the secrets, all the reasons she never explained to him. Ah, I just need more from her until I can allow her to be with him 🤨 NA. 5 stars ⭐️

From These Dark Depths picks up right where On These Black Sands left off, with our fearless Captain in a less-than-savory situation and the rest of the crew scrambling to figure out what’s next.

I think that Vanessa has a talent for writing cliffhangers, because when I finished On These Black Sands (the prequel to From These Dark Depths) I was left with the same feeling of, “What happens next?! Tell me!” As a reader I found myself tied to the main characters (Aoife/Declan) storyline, but found myself surprisingly intrigued in other storylines as well (as with Declan’s sister Cait, or even the minor characters such as Captain Halloran and her connection to the story). It takes time and careful weaving to make these shifts in perspective flow smoothly, and I think Vanessa does a great job of that. Though I didn’t fall for the instant-love couple in this story, I was intrigued enough with the rest of the story to follow along (and if this is your favorite type of romance trope, you’ll probably like it more than I did!). I myself am more of an “adventure drives the story” rather than romantic developments (which did have a larger pull in this story in comparison to the first novel), but there is enough adventure (and definitely heart-pounding hanging-onto-every-word moments).

I noticed this with her first novel in this series, and it carries on into From These Dark Depths—Vanessa has a way with deep emotional themes. Don’t get me wrong, I do think this is a strength in her writing! However, nearly all of these characters are going through seasons of trial (whether facing physical monsters or mental monsters!), and in some ways, that can be grating on the reader (or, at least, was for me). I remember thinking, “do these characters get a break?” It’s that feeling where, “oh, things can’t possibly get any worse!” (And then, they do.) When physical trials are defeated; anxiety or stress swoops in full force. As an emotional reader this was often tiring and it left me wondering whether a happy ending was in store.

All those words aside, would I read the next book? Yes. I’m drawn into her story and am interested in where the adventure goes next! My highlights: multiple perspectives with interesting side characters, deeper knowledge of character backgrounds, a compelling cliffhanger! My “eh” moments: insta-love, a little too much romance for my taste, so much pain and sadness without much respite.

Content: Darker emotional themes, cursing, sensual kissing/touch and “action” referenced.

It may have taken me months to finish this, which I do regret considering how much I especially loved the last third of it, but that is the plight of a mood reader.

Uuuuummmmm … WHAT?!!!! THAT’S HOW THIS BOOK IS ENDING?!!!!???!!? ON THAT NOTE?!!!???!! NOT FAIR! I NEED WTLB LIKE YESTERDAY! IPAD WAS THROWN! TEARS WERE SHED!! GASPS WERE GASPED! VANESSA, YOU’VE DONE IT AGAIN!!!!!

In all seriousness, this book is even better than the first, the twists and turns, the reveals, the world building and character arcs, the romance, everything stepped up a gear, and I can’t wait to return to the Aisling next year! (God I have another year to wait 😭 I’ll just sit here and thirst after fictional pirates until that day arrives, don’t mind me 🫠)

You know how some books just immediately sink you right back into a world you love? I was within the first ten pages when I thought, with a happy sigh, I love this series. I should reread the first one once I've finished this one. :)

While the series had me with Declan and his pirate crew, I really enjoyed this second book's storylines with the fae and sirens! Really fantastic. I thought it built up well, held it's own, expanded the world and relationships nicely, and THEN set up a third book so well!!!

Really, this was a joy to read. I'm sure to read the whole series again in addition to looking forward to the next installment.

Nicely done, Vanessa Rasanen!

“And this world had no shortage of wickedness to fuel his nightmares.”

Oooo y’all. This sequel DELIVERED. Book one was always going to be a tough act to follow, but From These Dark Depths held its own and set us up for an epic conclusion to the trilogy! FTDD was definitely more dark than OTBS, but it needed to be. Given where we ended in OTBS, this book needed to explore some of the darker aspects of pirate life…and it most certainly did.

I loved the addition of the Siren Queen in this book and though Rasanen’s portrayal of these sirens was great. I feel like most sirens in books aren’t incredibly wicked, they just seduce people to their deaths. But these sirens were seductive, yes, but also wicked to the bone.

I knew going in to book two that there would be a “love at first sight” moment and I’ll be honest, I struggle with insta-love. It’s usually an immediate eye roll and DNF for me. However, this relationship definitely felt more like a “love at first sight” believable romance. I didn’t even think twice or question its genuineness.

What am I looking forward to in book 3? AOIFE AND DECLAN HAVING THEIR MOMENT 😍😍 book two had some sweet steamy moments, but I hear book three is going full on spice and I’m here for it 👀

A few fave quotes:
“She would risk a lifetime of pain and heartache for a single chance to not simply know that man, but to love and be loved by him.”

“But to love someone, to have them love you, knowing you can never be together? That? That is the pain that only comes from shattered hopes and destroyed dreams.”

“None of us are free from the demons within.”

I beta read an early copy of FTDD. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
