Okay. Okay, okay, just. Whoa. WHOA. How could I ever hope to make this absolute TRIUMPH of a book justice in something as humble as a review!? Nothing I type can ever convey just how magical, enthralling, and absolutely addictive Cassidy's debut is. Believe me, I've tried several times! It’s amazing, really. Amazing. It’s funny, it’s complex, it’s dark when it has to, it’s addictive, it’s magical. It’s so gods-damned good. THANK YOU, Cassidy Clarke, for writing the story I needed to believe in YA fantasy again.

What happens when the lost heir gets found... And couldn't care less about their "true" origins? Meet Soren. Fierce and loyal, the Nyxian Princess isn't about to bow down to anyone from Atlas, the kingdom her homeland has been at war with for years now. She'd rather die a painful death, thank you very much, and leave the world with a smile on her lips, and her middle finger sticking out to the Atlas stuck-ups. Which sounds like a majestic way to go... Only, her best friend and battlemate Elias is dying from a poison only the kingdom of Atlas knows how to cure, and there's no way she's letting him go down without a fight. So when she finds herself in enemy territory, she takes a deep breath and starts looking for a way to play them.

What I adore the most about TSH is the feeling I get from it. Fantasy books are massified now, and hundreds upon hundreds of them are published every year; but there hasn't been one that's made me feel so hypnotized and fully immersed in the world it's set in as TSH in years. I got the same feeling I do whenever I reread a childhood favourite, "Memorias de Idhún"--it feels like home. It feels like I'm walking besides the characters: parrying with Kallias, wandering the streets with Finn, being mischievous with Soren, or praying with Elias. There's something magical about Cassidy's writing, like a gentle but firm spell that won't let you go once you step into her world.

Since the very beginning, I fell in love with Soren, Finn, Eli, and everyone else. They have this habit of slipping into your heart without neither your permission, nor your awareness, and settling down to live there rent-free. (Soren and Finn, particularly; they're both as cheeky as can be. Elias did so too, but he’s nice and would never do so without politely knocking on your door, and asking for your consent.) Although I’m no Nyxian warrior princess, I still felt so attached to Soren all the way through! Even though she’s got a strong moral compass, and is quite loyal and protective, she’s a very human character, in the sense that she also has flaws, weaknesses, and makes mistakes. She doesn’t at any point become a shallow or single-minded character, and that’s why it’s just impossible not to grow fond of her. To any fellow reader tired of supposedly strong female characters who turn out to be annoying as heck: come meet Soren. She's what we mean when we say we want well-written female heroines in literature.

But... Although Soren is the main character you see in the cover, the one who will totally steal the spotlight as well as your heart is Finnick Atlas. Just mentioning him makes me go weak in the knees; think Finnick from THG meets Nikolai Lantsov meets Loki of Asgard. Yes, that's just how totally gorgeous and godly Finn is! Smart, quick-witted, and resourceful, he's the mightiest literary crush I've had in quite a while. I mean... Can I please marry him already! Please! PLEASE! The way he always stays two steps ahead, and juggles the careless Finn everyone thinks they know with the actual king of the Port Atlas streets, is just impressive. I deeply admire how Cass was able to think like an absolute mastermind; Finn's voice can't have been easy to find! Yet here he is, glorious and ginger and wearing a purple sweater and oh-so-totally-loveable. Please, please, read TSH to meet him! I need more people to join my Finnick Atlas Fan Club!

There’s also Cassidy's totally beautiful writing style! There were so many sentences that just clicked. Hers is not a quill for the faint of heart, that’s for sure. She takes the reader’s heart, smiles gently, and proceeds to give it the kind of shake you’d give a cocktail shaker to pour your mightiest crush a drink. There were so many passages that left me with wobbly knees, because they were just so well-written and so real and so, so right. Many times, I would go back to re-read them and mutter, “Just how does she do this!? Gotta ask her the devil she stroke a deal with, because dammit, she defo got the upper hand!”. Cassidy knows her way around good prose, and I wouldn't be surprised if she turned out to be Calliope, the Greek Muse of Epic Literature.

"The Saltwater Heir" is a gem, which no YA Fantasy fan should allow themselves to miss out. Miss Clarke is a rising star, and I definitely can't wait to read anything and eerything she writes from now on! Please take me to Port Atlas, and give me the citizenship so I can stay there for the rest of my life.

I had the privilege and honor of reading an advanced copy of this book, and I am BLOWN AWAY by the talent and mastery exhibited in this debut novel from Clarke. The greatest technical strength of this story is the effortless prose. It’s easy and digestible and not bogged down by purple imagery, and yet it manages to be emotional and evocative in every line. There were several moments I had to put the book down and sigh just to admire the way language was used. The plot and characters are even more successful. This is a story of humanity, of family and fortitude and the lengths we go for love. While the magic system and godly elements made this fantasy, the real heart of Clarke’s world is the way the characters handle their very human human hearts.

Some of the best elements: Clarke writes sibling relationships with absolutely mastery. The heart and soul of this book is the Atlas family, their flaws and their victories, and I felt entirely at home/ included in their world from the first chapters.

Soren and Elias break the mold for best friends to lovers. Their bond is so beautiful, and while they but heads, Clarke doesn’t rely on unnecessary tension to tell their love story. She lets it unfold is an organic, heartwarming (and breaking) way.

Finnick Atlas is one of the greatest characters ever written and I will die on that hill. It is RARE that we get a POV from a man not relying on his physical strength to lead, but his wit and willingness.

The ending BROKE ME. It’s been ages since I stayed up late to finish a book, but I physically could not put it down at the end. It hurt, I was sobbing at 2 am, but I don’t regret a moment of it. I am waiting with baited breath for the sequel, and I am 10000% confident in Clarke’s ability to deliver even more perfection.

So far, this is my top read of 2021, and has just made my top five books overall, knocking out the Folk of Air series. Don’t wait to read!

Where do I even begin with this book?

There's not one element I don't love. The notion of kingdoms at war; of rivals to best friends who desperately want - and are desperately scared to be! - something more; of trickster princes and ones with the kingdom on their shoulders, women both strong and vulnerable, princesses trying to find their identity and save their loves who are trying to save THEM...there is something for every reader here.

Dark magic. Mystery. Romance. Family bonds and friendships. Deep, creative pantheons and hilarious, slangy banter. These are just a few elements that stuck with me during and after reading this book. Every angle is complex, from character dynamics to internal struggles to worldbuilding to lore. OH THE LORE. I love the different gods and goddesses and how they interplay with the human cast from afar, these cruel hints that they can - and will???? - be something more.

The romance. The dialogue. I can't get enough of either. I will never forget how certain scenes and lines in this book struck me when I first read them, vibrating through my whole heart. They're some of my favorites to go back to and reread over and over again. Even when they crush me.

Mostly this book just feels like home to me in a way I've craved and not found in fantasy books in a very long time. It has that spark I've missed since the times of Graceling, Shadow and Bone, Brightly Woven and the first two TOG books. And for that reason alone, it will always be one of my favorites. Hands down.

The hardest thing about this book is having to wait for the next one. I wish it were in my hands already! But like every great series, it's worth waiting for. And after that ending - my heart is ready! ♥️ Bring on Book 2!

My favorite thing about this book is the characters and their relationships! The family feels are fantastic—real and raw, intense and moving—and I loved Soren + Elias together. ❤️ The story is heart-warming at times, heart-breaking at others. There’s humor and intensity throughout. Necromancy isn’t my thing, but I still very much enjoyed the story. The end of the book twisted things in a direction that has me excited to see what the sequel will bring.

I was given an ARC of this book to give an honest review, and OMG!! I was not expecting to fall so hard for it! Or to have my heart ripped from my chest, shattered, and put back together in the most amazing and beautiful way!!

I can NOT wait for the second book in this saga!! This was AMAZING!

I mean... THIS BOOK!!! THIS bloody book is the best thing that happened to me all year. So, let's get into a "review" (If you know me, you know all my reviews are a mess, but hey, I try).

~WHAT TO EXPECT?~

* Multiple povs
*Friends to... lovers? (read to find out)
*The best siblings banter
*High fantasy
*Necromancy
*Great worldbuilding
*Queendoms!!
* Off-screen enemies to best friends.

~WHY I LOVED IT SO MUCH~

-The banter was on point, between both siblings and friends. The Altlas siblings will definitely steal your heart, as it's impossible not to fall in love with them.

-This book is a lot about sibling relationships, and it's done beautifully!

-The prose is so gorgeous! It's heartfelt and compelling. Almost poetic at times, and it made my heart sing happy songs while I read it.

-I laughed, I cried, and it made me think a lot.

-The plot twists!! Oh, my heart! Those plot twists!! I was expecting some of them, but still, they were fantastically put together and I was still surprised by them.

~THE 4 POVS~

*A badass female MC that you can't help but love, and deals with deep emotional shit.

*A broody love interest that's just a cinnamon roll in disguise.

*A trickster prince that will steal your heart and make you laugh like no other.

*A surfer prince with a wild connection to the ocean and the whole world upon his shoulders.

This book was just amazing, and I couldn't be happier that I stumbled upon this ARC. To be honest, as soon as I saw the cover, I knew it was a book I had to read. I'm always scared of ARCs, especially when they're debut novels... but this doesn't read like one. Cassidy is amazing at her craft, and I honestly hope this book makes it to every bookworm's household because it is amazing and it deserved the hype I'm giving it, I promise!

Thank you so much Cassidy for writing this, for sharing your love for the ocean through such a beautiful story, and for allowing me to be a part of this universe. This story will be a part of me for a long time, and even a month after reading it, I'm still not ready to let it go! (Can't wait for the official release date so I can do a re-read, because yes, I pre-ordered the book! I had to!)

What a delightful book! For me, the main part that definitely stood out for me here was the characters. The entire Atlas family, Soren, Elias...they are so well fleshed out, and I love the dynamics we get to see between them. My fave is definitely Kallias, I adore him and pity him in equal measure.

There was a major plot twist that I had pretty much guessed who was behind it, but I think it's a mark of Clarke's great foreshadowing that I was able to pick up on it. I really look forward to seeing where the series goes from here, as there are definitely a lot of challenges facing the main characters at this point.

Confession: I was avoiding this book for a while because I'm too impatient for long books and I was warned the pacing was slow.

I was wrong and all fantasy fans should absolutely read this book.

It's one part family drama, one part "idiots mutually pining for each other" and one part mystery. Yes, the pacing is a bit slow because the family drama is so intricate, but it has such a fantastic payoff.

And the mystery??? I was eating up every breadcrumb Clarke gave me, and I still didn't completely get it. I Love being fooled when it's done So Well. This has such great re-read potential.

Seriously, 10/10, and I am planning to devour the rest of the series.

High fantasy at it's finest. A must-read for fantasy lovers of every age.

This was one of the most beautiful, heartbreaking, hilarious, action packed and vibrant stories I've ever read.

I feel like this book was a mashup of all my favorite things. Romance, mystery, magic, morally grey characters, family bonds and found family, complicated relationships, loyalty and incredible world-building.

Cassidy Clarke excels at witty banter, balancing humor and deep/hard topics. Every character is complex and well rounded. I feel as though they are now all my own family and friends and after finishing the book I missed them immediately.

This story was everything I wanted and more. One of my favorite reads, ever. (I can't wait to read it again.)

If you loved Fable by Adrienne Young, The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo or Graceling by Kristin Cashore -- you will love this book.

The Saltwater Heir!! Where to begin?? Oh that’s easy, so here we go…

This story is immersive and lush with world-building so vivid, you will get lost in the story on page one. I could picture the battlefield, with smoke and death raging around me, I could almost smell the sea air as we walked through Port Atlas, or hear the music as the Saltwater Ball flourished around me. The details were impeccable, that I was sucked into the story at every moment. ⁣

The real standout in this book are the characters!! Soren is SPECTACULAR. She is a badass warrior who kicks butt and has a tongue sharper than the swords she carries. I’m pretty sure she can take out people quicker with her wit than her weapons. We also watch her struggle and cope and heal, and it’s an incredible emotional journey to go on with her. ⁣

Of course, let’s not forget the other characters who get a POV in this book! Elias, the brooding best friend who always shows up, isn’t afraid to roll his eyes at Soren’s rash (he may even call them stupid at one point 😮) decisions, and is a perfect balance to her. ⁣

Kallias, the Prince of the people, who has struggled to believe in himself and his worth ever since his baby sister disappeared. We watch him figure out his place in the world through missteps, a relatable journey for many. ⁣

And finally, the trickster prince, the gorgeously morally grey Finn!! The man who always has a comeback, always knows the right “mask” to wear in any situation and is smarter and more cunning than any one human should be allowed to possess. (any guesses who my favorite is?? That’s right, FINN!!!) ⁣

Full of immersive imagery, hilarious banter, constant twists & turns, and a leading lady you can never forget, The Saltwater Heir is a high fantasy novel meant for everyone. ⁣

Oh my gosh! This is without a doubt, one of my favorite books I've read this year! Being Cassidy Clarke's Debut Novel, I think she did an AMAZING job.

By golly the twist and turns in this book kept me on my toes and I loved EVERY minute of it. The world building was created with great detail that it made the pages come alive. The characters were so well done that I loved every single one of them. The family dynamic was well written with the quirky banters and loving gestures.

What I loved most about this book was how unique and unlike anything I've read before. I'm SO excited for the next book in the series.

The Saltwater Heir takes a common trope of a lost princess and adds layers of complexity as well as fantastical world building and fully fleshed out characters to create an intriguing narrative that held my attention to it’s twisted ending.

Soren fights as a warrior princess of Nyx, however, after trying to save her friend and battlemate Elias’ life from poison, she discovers she’s Soleil, the lost princess of Atlas, and the source of the decade long war between the two countries. I loved her journey trying to see who she really is and I enjoyed the conclusion she set out. I especially love the banter between her and Elias, and it was so cute to see the two together and calling their nicknames. The other two PoV characters are her two Atlas Kingdom brothers, and both were deep and complex and I clung onto them by the halfway point. The characters had memorable personalities are were fairly fleshed out, and I enjoyed the dialogue.

The world felt fleshed out and while we only got to see two countries, it felt like this world had a lot more that we haven’t gotten to see yet and might see in the rest of the series. I enjoyed the cultures clashing and the many areas we did get to see. The magic was explained fairly well and I enjoyed the foreshadowing. The plot was intriguing, with quite a few twists, especially when it got close to the end. The writing was well crafted and dug into the emotions and while it took me a few chapters to get into it, I was engaged by the end.

As a side note, I love the character arc on the top of each of the chapters! And I love the cover!

Cassidy Clarke has done herself well in this first outing and I’m looking forward to what happens next, especially after that big climax and that ending!

READ IT.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

Uh wow, how have I not known about this book? It’s a gem. AND YOU NEED TO READ IT TOO PLEASE.

This, hands down, has the best sibling relationships I have ever read. They felt incredibly real and they were tight knit. But that didn’t stop arguments, nor did it stop apologies. I think getting a multi point of view set-up with everyone really sold this book for me. I loved seeing everyone’s sides and decisions. What they were thinking and how that played into the further plot.

The MAIN character, Soren, is just on the cusp of some major character arcs (well, everyone is for that matter). Saltwater did a great job of accomplishing a cast that needs to grow, but without making you not want to keep going. I LOVE the initial vibes for Finn, Kal, Soren, Elias and more. I think some serious moves will be made throughout the series.

There’s only a dash of romance at this time (which I am curious as to how it’ll be carried over multiple books). I would have loved a bit more, yet by the time some feelings were being expressed I realized I was very much emotionally attached to these two getting their way. The best kind of feelings towards fiction relationships.

I couldn’t get enough of this book and it is so easy to fly through. There’s not intense world-building throughout. It works well in that it’s still easy to know who’s who and what the overall plot will continue to be. I’m interested in many of the sub-plots with meddling gods and betrayals galore.

Overall audience notes:
- Fantasy
- Language: some
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: medium
- Trigger/Content Warnings: loss of loved ones, wasting sicknesses, near death experiences, weapons violence, battle scenes

Oh, Elias and Finn. My loves. I will forever be mad that they only live in the pages of this book. But they are thoroughly alive, nonetheless, and so are all the other characters in this beautiful story.

Cassidy Clarke does an exquisite job of crafting nuanced characters who are flawed and vivid. Each has their own motivations that cause unique tensions in each relationship. In this way, the author manages to avoid the tired trope of underdeveloped antagonists or protagonists who all get along with each other. This complexity allows the themes of loss and loyalty to be all the more touching and realistic.

Despite the weight of its themes and the occasional ominous moment, "The Saltwater Heir" is an overwhelmingly fun read. Soren is sassy, the characters are clever, and it glories in fabulous, dramatic fantasy scenes, thus striking the balance between the humor and the serious moments that will leave this book lingering long in the mind of the reader.

Gods, royalty, family, and the undead. What's not to love? I had the pleasure of beta reading "The Saltwater Heir" and I hope you will pick it up also!

I can't believe that I waited so long to read this book!

Cassidy Clarke draws readers in from the first chapter with characters that demand you keep reading. Soren is HILARIOUS, oh my god. Every time she opens her mouth I was laughing so hard, she is so sassy and such an icon.

I loved the Atlas sibs, they are so cute and their banter was so fun to read! I gotta say that even though I loved Soren's personality, Finn is my favorite character. His pov was my favorite to read because it was deep but also lighthearted at the same time.

As for the writing style, I'm really not one for multiple point of views but I think Clarke converted me. Every single one of the povs was so well written and, unlike some of the multiple pov books I've read before, none of the povs are boring.

Clarke's The Saltwater Heir crushed my heart and soul in every way a great book does. I laughed, cried, threw my book across the room, you name it. I can't wait to see where Clarke takes the characters next!

Lots of love!

I need book 2!!

That was my first thought when I finished The Saltwater Heir. Clarke creates a fantastical universe that gets you hooked from the very first page. What makes this book so magical is the cast of characters. The Saltwater Heir is a character-driven novel.

The world of Nyx & Atlas, I thought, were beautifully fleshed out. The author does a beautiful job of introducing readers to Soren's life in Nyx before the plot moves to Atlas.

The book flows wonderfully while balancing multiple points of view. We, as readers, get to know these various characters. The character development is on point in this book. Each character, from the Royal Family of Atlas to Elias (Soren's battlemate) stands out. I got so attached to these characters that I found myself crying because of one chapter. All I can say is that Clarke does a fabulous job with the character development in this novel.

This story has a strong beginning and end. I did enjoy the middle half, but I felt it could have been a bit shorter. Also, I'm hoping one of my main questions about this book gets an answer in the sequel.

I did guess one of the big plot twists in the book. However, the overall ending was a surprise to me. I'm curious to see where book two will take these characters.

I loved the romance and one hundred percent ship Elias & Soren.

The plot and all the questions I had kept me flipping the pages. I was craving a bit more of a focus from Nyx's side. However, I spent most of this story thinking it was a standalone novel. Now that I know there will probably be a sequel, I think I will get my wish in book two.

Overall, I could not put The Saltwater Heir down. Clarke does a fantastic job at creating a character-driven story. From the start, I was hooked, and I'm excited about the sequel.

First things first... when is the sequel coming out?! 😱😂
This was a brilliantly written book. It kept me enthralled throughout. I actually had to slow down and take breaks, because the suspense was killing me and I needed time to breathe! 🤣

I loved how the different character perspectives were so well written the story didn’t feel choppy at all. There was no break in flow with each new perspective. I really enjoyed that the entire book, with different perspectives no less, was not written in 1st person. ☺️

I loved the sibling dynamics! And the romance! 😍
I found myself entirely invested in how each relationship (platonic or romantic) developed. Finn and Soren are definitely my favourite siblings!

The cliffhanger is so painful! 😂
I don’t know how I am going to manage waiting for the sequel! Please don’t be a long wait! 🥺

I would definitely recommend this read!

Cassidy Clarke--Holy freaking crap! This book... I am having the hardest time putting my thoughts into words! Amazing, phenomenal, fantastic work of art. I devoured this book, unable to stop, needing to see where the story went. There are so many layers, mysteries, secrets... oh the secrets. The absolute creative genius that went into this whole plot is unmatched. I did not see several things coming, and the ending made me crave for the next book. Cassidy made me laugh, cry, seethe with anger, and breathe sighs of relief. I love the character that is Soren/Soleil, and I adore Elias. Throughout the book, I definitely fell for the Atlas siblings, Kallias, Finn, and Jericho. I adored Vaughn. And my heart was torn from my chest. This is a MUST read! I know I cannot do the book justice by a simple review, you've gotta read it for yourself! If only I could give it 10 stars! :)

This book was very well written, and after a slow start, kept me turning the pages the rest of the way through. I loved almost all of the characters, especially Finn!! Each of the siblings, and sibling-in-law, had very well done character arcs throughout the whole book. Even Elias, who I didn’t like in the beginning, I found myself liking by the end. As for Soren herself, she had an interesting character arc but I found myself not really feeling anything about her except a little annoyed at the very end of the book.
Besides this, nothing really detracted from my enjoyment of the story, I enjoyed it very well and would probably reread it.
I would like to point out some content issues for sensitive readers: there is very frequently used mild cursing, and a few written scenes (including the first) where Soren and Elias sleep in the same bed.
I received a free copy of this book, and chose to review it.

The Saltwater Heir is a beautifully crafted story about a stolen princess who is found again after 10 years presumed dead. Soren belongs to both warring kingdoms and not only must she try to connect the two halves of herself as her lost memories begin to surface but she must also race against time to find an antidote to an uncurable viper bite for her beloved battlemate.

I was hooked by the concept of this story and knew I couldn’t miss out on the chance to read this book. I was hooked immediately; I loved the introduction to Nyx and was very happy that it didn’t take long for Soren to be discovered by Atlas.

The setting was excellent, and Clarke really made me fall in love with Atlas. We only get the first few chapters to see Nyx, the home Soren was raised in, and whilst we spend the majority of the book in Atlas, Clarke really managed to portray Soren’s love of Nyx and I feel as though we get a good idea of her home whilst also getting to explore Atlas alongside Soren. The idea of Soren being born of both these two warring kingdoms really put into perspective that war is fought by the innocent people fighting for their home, neither side is evil despite the horrors war entails.

I really loved getting to know the royal siblings and thoroughly enjoyed watching their relationships with Soren grow and develop throughout the story. I liked that each sibling had their own story and I enjoyed getting to know them all. We get multiple POVs throughout which I loved as it gave us insight into each of the siblings as well as Soren and her battle mate, Elias. This allowed us to gain a lot more knowledge about each one, so they all felt a lot more in-depth and well rounded - we really got to understand the perspective of each sibling which made their interactions much richer and more meaningful. I also really appreciated that the different POV chapters weren’t rigid and weren’t forced to alternate as it made it a lot more natural and gave us insight when it felt needed but still meant Soren was our focus. This worked very well with the story!

There were a lot of emotional moments thought out the story as I felt connected to their shared history and backstory, and their family banter was amazing- it made it feel very genuine and I loved seeing this develop throughout the story. Finn was my absolute favourite - he had a lot of layers and depth and his pure love for Soleil was unparalleled. His many pretences hid a much deeper cunning individual and I liked that he preferred to keep pretending he was less than his siblings even though he was so much more than they believed.

The writing was excellent and flowed very smoothly. The story absolutely captivated me and completely drew me into the world and the characters. The ending was absolutely killer, and it broke my heart for all of them, but I have hope for book two!

Overall, it was a beautiful story, full of heartbreak, family, hope, and betrayal. Clarke wove an exquisite tale with a beautiful setting and a layered story with enthralling characters and an ending that has me begging for the next book! I would highly recommend it for readers who enjoy familial bonds, banter, secret heir tropes, and good story twists.

Huge thank you to Sapphire Ink Press and Cassidy Clarke for providing this eARC in exchange for my honest review!

When I first heard about The Saltwater Heir through Sapphire Ink Press I was instantly intrigued by the synopsis. I signed up for the cover reveal and was then blown away by this S T U N N I N G cover. With that cover + synopsis I knew I absolutely had to read The Saltwater Heir!!

The Saltwater Heir is Cassidy Clarke’s debut novel and it is phenomenal! This book is magical, unique, and totally captivating. This was just the NA fantasy refresher I needed. A lot of NA fantasy feels the same these days, but TSH blew me away. The writing is stunning and the world building is so well done. The Saltwater Heir is NA fantasy but so much more . . . there’s mystery, romance, and familial bonds. All set in an epic world that is full of magic and lore!

The Saltwater Heir tells the story of Soren, the princess of Nyx. Through a series of events, Soren discovers that she is actually the long thought dead princess from the rival kingdom, Atlas. Soren must deal with her new identity and the life she knew, plus get to know a whole new family and kingdom all while trying to save her best friend. Soren’s memories slowly awaken, but dark magic also begins to stir in Atlas.

The Saltwater Heir is told through multiple points of view . . . Soren/Soriel, Elias, Kallias, and Finn. Sometimes too many POVs can be distracting and pull the reader away from the story, but this was absolutely not the case here. There was absolutely no break in the flow. Each POV added so much to the story and allowed me to get to know the characters so much more! Each POV offered a different perspective to the events happening in the palace which really elevated the story. My favorite POV is definitely Finn. He’s also my favorite character. I saw a review that described Finn as Nikolai Lanstov meets Loki and this is so perfect. Finn is so loveable and witty. I looked forward to every scene that involved him.

I also really enjoyed Soren/Soriel’s POV and character. I especially love her relationship with Finn. The Atlas siblings are all fantastic and I love the dynamic between them, but there’s just something extra special about Finn and Soren/Soriel. I definitely have fallen for the Atlas siblings!

The Saltwater Heir also features a mix of present day with flashbacks and memories. I really liked how Clarke wove in these memories into the story so seamlessly. A huge part of TSH is Soren’s journey to discover her identity and come to terms with her past and present. She has to find a way to love and accept both parts of herself . . . the Nyxian raised with the Atlas born. I loved going on this journey with her and I truly felt like I was there. I really felt like I was with all the characters . . . Finn as he explores the city streets, Kallias as he struggles with his duties, Elias as he comes to term with his fate. Every single character’s arc and journey is vital to the story!

Really quick before I wrap things up, I have to touch on the world-building and imagery. This world is beautiful! Atlas, with its beaches and festivals was especially gorgeous. I could totally picture everything as it happened. I definitely want to visit! Which brings me to the downright creepy part of The Saltwater Heir . . . necromancy! Clarke did a brilliant job writing the scenes with the army of the dead. She depicted it so well that I was totally creeped out! Especially a certain scene in Soren’s room! I am so impressed with Clarke’s world building and ability to create such strong imagery!

The last part of The Saltwater Heir tore my heart out and put me through an emotional rollercoaster. I truly did not see the twists coming. I figured out a small part of the big reveal, but I had no idea the extent of it. My jaw kept dropping with each twist! Even though it hurt, the ending was totally epic. And the cliffhanger has me dying for the sequel!

As you can probably tell I LOVED this book! The Saltwater Heir is a fantastic debut (seriously I’m so impressed with Cassidy Clarke!) that is a refreshing YA fantasy full of magic, twists, and incredible characters. I highly recommend this book!

HOLY WOW!!! This is one epic story!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story! I always thought people were weird when they said the writing is lyrical but after reading this I totally get it. Cassidy's writing is just gorgeous and engrossing!! It's hard to believe this is her first book. I'm not kidding - the writing and story is phenomenal!!

The story completely sucks you in and doesn't let go! I love the lost heir aspect and the flashbacks! The relationships between each of the siblings is just perfection! The characters are all so well written and each different! I felt like I got to know and love each of them!! I do adore Finn and Kallias!! And I can't leave out my love for Elias!! SOoo many new book boyfriends!! The banter is spot on! I love me some snark!

The pacing is perfect! I couldn't put it down! I read it all in one night! This is definitely one of my favorite reads of 2021!! It's absolute perfection!!! I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone!!

Soren, princess of Nyx, finds herself in Atlas, the kingdom Nyx has been at war with. She’d be happy to exact her revenge for the death of her last battlemate, only her current battlemate has been afflicted with an Atlas-made poison, and she’ll be damned if she doesn’t get the antidote by pretending to be the heir to the Atlas throne that everyone thought dead.

Before I get into this, I would just like to say that Cassidy Clarke’s debut novel effortlessly earned its place amongst my top favorites, even contending with Neil Gaiman’s American Gods for first place! And we all know how much I am obsessed with American Gods.

What I liked:
– The prose. Clarke’s writing style is practically poetic. The descriptions, the choice of words, and everything in between melds together perfectly, be it when setting the scene or letting us into the POV character’s head.
– The character interactions. Each action taken and word spoken is so flawless, so seamless, you feel as if it’s occurring in real life instead of on paper. The exchanges between the Atlas siblings were hilariously perfect, and the connection between Soren and Elias was wonderful.
– Finn. The Trickster Prince immediately stole my heart. He was so well written.

What I didn’t like:
– Other than a tiny part that I think I misunderstood, I don’t think there is anything I didn’t like!

Overall:
– I love this book almost as much as American Gods, and now anything written by Cassidy Clarke is on my auto-buy list. I can’t wait for the sequel!

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a review but all opinions are entirely my own. Additionally, before I was even - gods blessedly - given an advanced copy I had preordered this book on Amazon because I wanted to read it THAT BADLY.

THIS BOOK has been teased around indie bookstagram, talked about with reverence by those fortunate enough to beta read it and I swear to you on all Five of the Gods: it is worth the hype. In fact, I can’t remember a time where a book has Not only lived up to the hype but exceeded my expectations.

This book has everything: subterfuge, a lost princess, a lost family, really. Kingdoms at war, bonds tighter than blood and binds worn away by grief and loss of hope...but once dusted away and polished...are revealed to be wright of pure silver and only needed polishing. There is a unique system of magic and the Gods linger in the corners of every page. There is battle and loss, sacrifice and redemption.

Soren stole my heart. Chapter one, lines 3 and 4:
“Irritation prickled up her legs at the unsatisfying thumps her feet made against the floorboards. She should have kept her boots on until she was done fuming.”

Irreverent and headstrong she continuously made me laugh aloud. Her quick wit and sharp tongued banter were pure joy to experience as a reader. Even more of a joy: her heart, her hope and her determination which guide her through this novel like a beacon.

“Her mother had always told her to give her dearest wishes to the stars, and they would carry them straight to the moon to see them granted.”

I think I wasn’t even 8 chapters in before I knew this entire book had stolen my heart. I was alternately giggling then gasping in terror. Then chapter 16 came along and I was crying, old binds reformed and my heart clenched again: could she? Would they? Is this possible?

“She attacked you.”
“Only a little.”
“Kallias.”
“Really, Papa. Jericho fixed me up in seconds.”

Fast forward to having not nearly enough time to read yet frantically pushing forward, asking the time because I HAD to know. The Atlas siblings had worked their way into my heart. Kallias, Finn, Jericho. As well as Vaughn, the King and Queen. Especially the King. Something about his scenes just...immediately queued the waterworks. But I cared about these people so much, and wanted them to rebuild these tenuous bonds, regain those flickering trusts. I held my breath on more than one occasion...and cheered and laughed aloud on others!

“What’s so wrong with kissing me?” Soren demanded.
“Well, to start, I’m sure the forked tongue would make things unpleasant.”

Ellias. How could I possibly leave out the purest heart, the truest soul, the kindest battlemate and the sweetest jack@$$. (Read the book, you’ll get it). His bond with Soren shines the brightest, rivaled only by Finns and some of the other siblings' interwoven bonds. Which are fraught with angst and fury but such deep love and devotion.

“War breeds monsters in the minds of every side, but the truth isn’t often that grisly.”

Well isn’t that the truth. This war is complex and its motives even murkier. At the heart of this novel is a conversation about grief and loss, how people handle this (or don’t ) and how it can change you, force you to make devastating choices. Sometimes even just the threat of loss…

“...power isn’t power if someone has to give it to you. Power is something you claim for yourself. If it’s given, it can also be taken away. And the more people that have their eyes on you, the less you can get away with.”

I did NOT fully see the extent of the twist that was coming. Brilliantly executed and sharply wielded. Which brings me back to the brilliance of Cassidy Clarke. I cannot believe this is her DEBUT novel. The prose, the wit, the ferocity and the expertly wielded arsenal of words that tugged at ALL the emotions. She is one to watch. And I am so very grateful that this is a series. That I will have the distinct privilege to experience this story unfold in all its glory...because there is no doubt it will be glorious. There’s just no way. This debut was stunning. And I know Ms. Clarke has only just begun.

“But he was already gone, his shadow replaced by stars—thousands upon
thousands of glittering swathes strung across the sky like drapes over a bedframe, like waves thrown up against a shore of broken shells.”

I have to say I am eternally grateful to have discovered this series thanks to authors Lina C. Amarego and Renee Dugan. Both brilliant authors in their own right, but together, with others, they have created this wonderful indie community where greatness thrives. Cassidy Clarke is a prime example of that greatness. This greatness was clearly already within her but I think it’s amazing how they all cheer one another on and are each other’s greatest fans. It really is inspiring and a bookish world I love to support, in my own small way. I raise my wine glass full of cocoa in salute.

Now, as to my anticipation for the next book...I’ll let a few choice quotes speak for me. While I’m beyond eager for the next installment...I’m weary as to what my heart must brace itself to endure:

“They paused for a moment when they reached the dining room door, both glancing at each other out of the corners of their eyes.
“Good or bad, do you think?” Kallias asked quietly.
Finn snorted, but there was no amusement in his voice when he said, “If the pattern holds, we may never get good news again.”

And a collection of Finn’s best swears:
“Tempest’s rotted teeth.”
“Anima’s leafy pits.
“Occassio’s grimy—”
“By Anima and all her gods-damned tree-hugging followers”

I didn’t enjoy this as much as I wanted to because the plot moved like molasses. After the fight sequence between Sol and Kallias, things went dead flat until the end with Jericho and Sol. I also don’t like when there are too many POVs and while I enjoyed the characters, it made things a little too all over the place for my liking. I should have been suspicious as to why we didn’t have Jericho’s POV seeing as she’s a sibling. But I was just trying to get through the slow pace to really invest into the story.
