"Eloquent and hard muscled, deeply researched and deftly imagined, The Reckoning is an entrancing, fantastical journey to an end you will never see coming. The good news is it is just the start." –Michael Connelly (The Lincoln Lawyer, The Harry Bosch series)
GOOD FRIDAY.
1917.
THE END BEGINS.
Lieutenant David Durant and his band of survivors run for their lives, seeking the sanctuary of the fortress at Verdun. A hammer of retribution falls and sends them careening in different directions, running for their lives, running from themselves. Ensnared by the weight of their pasts, hunted by monsters in the form of men, they fight toward safety as the darkness consuming the world begins to capture and devour them one at a time.
You can tell that book two isn't just a sequel for the sake of being a sequel. No, this is the next chapter of one long story and it works all the better. It picks up right where we left off and continues the plots and arcs from before while building upon them.
Jeffrey Pierce delves deeper into his characters, while introducing others, without missing a beat. Nobody overshines anyone else, they all have their own thoughts, feelings, their own way of speaking and you can't ever say he has a case of same character syndrome. I love them, but my heart belongs to Caitlin.
As for the plot, if you enjoyed the first book, you'll love this one even more. More answers are given and more questions are asked, keeping you hooked until the very last word. I'm excited to start the third book!
I listened to the audiobook because Jeffrey is simply too good a voice actor. He made all the characters come alive and I'm now pestering him on Instagram like a bloater (haw haw) for the third audiobook's release.
The characters that he so thoroughly introduced in the first book, their backstories now begin to intersect and we begin to find out their paths crossing in the past. The second book moved beyond the supernatural and introduced the complexity of human darkness, we see the characters form and break alliances in the face of a common enemy. The supernatural foe also take on more complexity beyond merely resurrected dead, but it's still a bit difficult to pin down exactly what they are. According to the author, the fourth book should be out later this year, so I guess we're still relatively early in the storyline and hopefully this will clear up as the story progresses.
The Reckoning: Second Coming hits the ground running on the heels of the first book, The Reckoning: The Anointed Angel Comes, and picks up the frantic pace of action and character development that made the first book so enjoyable. Pierce continues his in depth exploration of his characters' dark pasts and hidden secrets while simultaneously maintaining the breakneck pace of storytelling that makes this one hard to put down. Brilliant writing, impeccable research into the historical settings and people, and a dark knack for irony and humor all make this second installment as good as the first.
