I had a strict policy of never chasing my snacks.
Maybe . . . maybe this was a bad idea. Maybe the Hollywood fumblers and dominant types were where I should be focusing my energy. But I’d never fully enjoyed myself with those guys, just like I’d never enjoyed visiting the zoo. A tiger behind a thick sheet of glass and regulated to an artificial environment lacked something essential. But there was a reason why people didn’t go visit wild animals in their natural habitats. Wild animals are real; they are dangerous; there are consequences.
Somehow, I needed to get things back on track, or I needed to escape this wild, real creature in his natural habitat.
Don’t mind me, I’ll just be working my way through all of Penny Reid’s catalog now!!! New favorite author alert!

This was a short, cute, hot little snack. I didn’t realize this was a prologue to their full story in the next book -which I have cued up to listen to- so this was more of a teaser than a novella of its own, but I’m not mad about it.
The hero in this was all kinds of book boyfriend goodness. The heroine was body positive and sex positive and very real. I don’t usually read the celebrity romance trope, but this was good because she was a small town girl at heart so wasn’t the vapid person that trope usually presents.
I’d have preferred this to be duet narration over single narrator, and didn’t love when the author broke the fourth wall and had the narrator speak to the reader (pet peeve). But I’m glad I finally tried this author and look forward to many more reads.

Penny Reid never disappoints bc I’ve loved every book I’ve read by her!
And omg I’ve never been as interested to read the next book bc of a prequel like this, especially for a contemporary romance.
The mmc is so hot in my head like whaaaaaa and I need to read more bc HOT DAMN that one scene wasn’t enough.

In this short teaser novella that was offered as a free download by the author, deputy sheriff Jackson James and Rae, an actress who knows Sienna, meet at the wedding of Sienna and Jethro Winston. I loved the witty banter and the steamy scenes as these two share a hot night together at the park and later her hotel room. Short and steamy and I can’t wait for their book!

I started with this one because I love when series start out with a novella, just so you can get a feel for it without committing to it.
And this one definitely did it right! It was cute, fast paced and funny.
Ngl, the 'tongue-thing' threw me off a little, but I love the narration in Rae's head throughout it all.
Speaking of Rae, I love her! 🥹
Her confidence is goals, she's very witty but she also stumbles and overthinks a lot. I think it's really impressive how real she feels in such a short book.
But the main reason you want to read this book is JACKSON. JAMES.❤️🔥

This was a tasty and tantalizing amuse-bouche, a tease to taunt us and whet our appetites before the promised feast. And I am so ready for the full meal deal! I adore the clever and agile pen of Penny Reid, I am her devoted fangirl, a self-professed acolyte, a totally committed, and possibly committable, Reid-er. I have fully enjoyed the bearded denizens of Green Valley and cannot get enough of the oddly riveting Winstons, but the James clan are also a favorite and I have been waiting, impatiently I might add, biding my time for Jackson’s story. The wait is almost over and I can tell it will be a treat well worth breaking my diet for.

JUST FOLKING AROUND is an extended prologue for Penny Reid's upcoming book TOTALLY FOLKED in her new series. It introduces us to Raquel, bombshell Hollywood actress and oddball incarnate and Jackson James who we've met in previous books of Penny's Winston Brothers series.
In this shorty Raquel really lives up to her reputation as quirky, awkward character and sticks her foot in her mouth more often than I can count. I felt third-party embarrassment for her antics and wanted to wrap her in a hug at the same time. While she did feel shallow in the beginning I knew that this was only an introduction to her and not a deep character study and for that this was the perfect length. You get a sense of what we can expect from Raquel once we get to read her and Jackson's story. Speaking of this hero, oh my. He felt like a bit of a hardass but also dreamy, charming stud in the other books. In this short story he is a less jaded, sweeter version and I hope that Raquel can bring that back in TOTALLY FOLKED.
For an introduction this is as good as it gets. It was sizzling with chemistry and brimming with potential. I'm very much looking forward to the first book in this new series!

I gobbled up this delicious morsel over coffee and loved the chemistry and connection that’s the foundation for her next release which I can’t wait to read. Jackson has been there in the periphery for a while and I’m so happy that he’s getting his own book.
My original take on Jackson James had been through the eyes of the Winston brothers of a foolish small town deputy. But with Just Folking Around we get to see him in a new light with so much more depth. He’s charming gentleman I’m sure I’ll fall head over heels for.

Unexpected Beginning!
This story just gives so much more dimension to Jackson James. Seeing him mostly through the eyes of the Winston brothers in other books, we kind of think of him as a petty jerk. But in this he is a gentleman - all ice cream, sunsets and consent.
This is such a quick, fun read that has certainly whet my appetite for the upcoming book for Jackson and Raquel.

This is a wonderful free gift from Penny Reid as an introduction to her upcoming novel Totally Folked.
Raquel is attending the wedding of Jethro and her good friend Sienna, when she is approached by one of the bearded brothers, Cletus Winston. He introduces her to Jackson James, the deputy sheriff. She is due to fly out at 5am the next morning so a bit of harmless flirting might just make the evening more interesting with this delicious looking man.
‘Oh no. He’s adorable. Sexy, humble, adorable, calm, steady, bedroom eyes, kraken tongue. This was the worst.’
After losing a bet with Jackson she ends up spending an unforgettable night with him. When it’s time to leave she wishes he had asked her to stay a bit longer. This man truly rocked her world and she has never experienced anything like that before. Too bad she will most likely never see him again.
‘I thought I could seduce him and keep things tidy, I thought I could be the fantasy, I thought I’d been in control. I was not in control. Whatever this was - this pull, this heat and energy - I’d never felt anything like it. Not with anyone. He won. I surrendered.’
Therefore, six years later Jackson is shocked to see her back in town once again…

This is essentially a whistle whetter (ahem) for the full story. In this we get the joy of the meet cute, a delicious slow burn, smouldering chemistry and the promise of more. Bring it on.

Prequel to the upcoming Good Folk series, I'm still on the fence about reading it. I liked the hero, Jackson James, better than the heroine, Raquel, though I think I've come to realize that I'm not overly fond of Reid's heroines. At this point, it's hard to distinguish them all from each other. They all seem to be utterly enamored with their own sense of being quirky and "weird" and feeling that their special attributes can't be appreciated by conventional society. In one Reid book, the heroine's eccentric behavior and sense of uniqueness is intriguing, but by now, it feels annoying. I also struggle to understand why they are all supposedly quirky and weird, aside from being told they are. Raquel feels weird and obligated to hide her weirdness, but I didn't have a clear understanding of her character.
In this upcoming book Raquel is a mega movie star, which is also not a trait I'm keen to read, kind of like reading about billionaires. Raquel's mega stardom separates her from most of humanity, and in this book, she is transplanted to the humble town of Green Valley, TN, where life is especially alien to her. It's pretty clear that Reid is going for a plastic Hollywood versus salt-of-the earth good folk dichotomy by bringing Jackson together with Raquel. In the prequel there is an attempt to work through sexuality and consent and what it means to be a free-spirited sexual creature when dealing fairly with one's partner. The story ends abruptly though clearly Raquel is fated to return to Green Valley for a reckoning.

I was completely surprised when this ARC landed on my kindle — and for good reason! This little novella introduces the couple for book one; the male love interest of course we know well, Mister Deputy Jackson James, but who was he to be paired up with?
Well now we know.
This novella opens up on the day of Sierra’s wedding and we meet Raquel, one of Sierra’s Hollywood friends, in town for the event, who ends up crossing paths, and more (but also maybe less!), with Jackson.
It took me a moment to warm up to her, I’ll be honest, but her Vegas Chess idea? Genius.
This is a sweet little taste test of what’s to come but knowing Reid we have no idea what’s actually coming.

I absolutely loved this prequel to Totally Folked. This is a whole new & different look at Jackson James. He's been the Winston Brothers' nemesis for a while.
This prequel is from the heroine's POV. Raquel is an actress & friend of Sienna. Raquel and Jackson meet at Sienna & Jethro's wedding reception. I love how Raquel describes Jackson as "beautiful". Hmm... Jackson? I can hardly wait for Totally Folked. I want more. The ending of Folking.... Oh Jackson, what are you gonna do now?

This is a super quick read, and really sets up the first book in this series. Absolutely a bit of a tease, but now we have the backstory on how Jackson and Rae met!

This book gave me that oooey, gooey feel. Like, a chocolate lava molten cake, feel. As it bakes, you slowly watch it rise, and the smell wafts throughout your home, watering your taste buds, delighting your senses. This story reminds me of what happens right as you take it out of the oven. You know what greatness awaits you, and just as you put your fork to that lovely chocolate mountain, someone asks you a question taking your attention off of what's awaiting you. You look back and forth, unsure of what comes next. You don't want to be rude and ignore them, but you also don't want to let the cake cool. Your whistle has been whet, and it needs satisfying.

What a delicious bite sized treat of Penny Reid awesomeness. I have wanted Jackson’s story foreeeeeever so I was thrilled this was the start of his tale.
Raquel and Jackson had the kind of chemistry that makes me get my “smirk face” as hubs called it.
This short read whet my appetite for lots more of these two and I cannot wait for their full story. Bring it on 👏👏

Great preview to Penny Reid’s new series Good Folks. This is (currently) available FREE in e-book format so being the voracious reader of all things PR and not-so-secret cheapskate, I immediately downloaded it. Who says there’s nothing better than a free beer? *fist pump*

Let's just start out by saying that this prequel was just the perfect amount of teasing.
The perfect amount of built anticipation for Jackson and Raquel's courting dance.
And, that the chemistry and sexual tension between these two was hot (and it was only a couple of hours spent together) even though all they did was talk and make out.
I see good things about to happen here.
I can't wait to read Totally Folked!

i wasn’t sure how i’d feel about a Jackson James book but this background and the first chapter at the end have got me very excited! i need to know more and thankfully the book is already out. i have the feeling Rae is going to be my new favorite Penny's FMC 🤩

You are such a tease Penny Reid 😭😭😭 To be honest I wasn’t really that excited about Jackson James book (Totally Folking) because I have not been a huge fan of character. But then this little gem landed on my mail (early review copy provided by the author) and now I am dying with the wait for Totally Folking.
Raquel is a Hollywood starlet and Jackson James the local police officer who get set up by none other than Cletus Winston during Jethro and Sienna’s wedding. This is a short (read too short) story about their first meeting without a definite ending or hea and the story is to be continued in Totally Folking.
Raquel was a complete surprise. I honestly didn’t think I would even like the same old beautiful hollywood actress but ofc Penny Reid had to prove me wrong. Raquel is soo endearing and so odd and completely weird that I couldn’t help but fall head over heels in love with her 😍😍 And Jackson James? He was a revelation. Like what magic are you brewing in your writer’s room Penny to make me love a character I was very sure I hated ???
I am not going into too much detail, just go pick up this short read (I believe it would be free on retail platforms from July 1st/21 and would be available only for a short time) and come cry with me while we wait for Totally Folked.
