The Face of Clara Morgan

Rate this book
People don't just disappear...

What happens when the past and the present collide?

Dominic Rose, a bachelor and teacher, has an antiquated hobby. He studies physiognomy, the art of judging somebody's character by their facial features and expressions. Living in a cottage at the edge of the woods with his frail, bedridden mother, he has spent decades pining after Clara, the love of his life, who vanished while staying with her grandparents.

When Kate Winston and her family move to North Yorkshire, it sets in motion a chain of events that will alter the lives of those involved forever.

Kate’s son, Alexander, makes friends with Dane, a local boy who has a reputation for being difficult. Soon Alexander is being led astray. Then they turn their attentions to their fragile teacher Dominic.

The boys are going to learn that actions have consequences…

A massively tense opening to this book and then as it progresses you are craftily led to assume you know who, what, why and when re that beginning…..
Then follows a mix of family drama with psychological thriller and such detailed descriptions of each main character and their thoughts, foibles, wants and disappointments you quickly build up a very intimate portrait of each, some good, some not, all fractured and tbh fascinating
In the midst of this are letters sent by one of the characters to ‘Clara’ without saying too much this is a big part of the ending of the story, another ending that foiled me, big time and is brilliantly executed and written
I love the authors pinprick detail of character emotion and feelings and honesty at their lives ( or how they perceive them to be ) and how events can either empower or flatten a person’s will
Really good, top notch drama and 2 very different parts to the story that all come together at the end, very enjoyable read

THE FACE OF CLARA MORGAN is a psychological suspense thriller by J.A. Baker.

The novel opens with armed police storming into a small-town school in North Yorkshire, where a classroom of children are being held at gunpoint. Then we switch back in time to see what led up to this event.

This novel centers around a teacher and three families living in the same small town. The reader is told of a murder and suicide from the killer’s point-of-view. But who was killed and who was the killer?

After Kate Winston’s husband, Anthony lost his high paying job as a Hedge Fund Manager, the family and their two children, daughter, Joss and son Alex, move to Yorkshire. Kate is not happy with this new life in the country, the change in lifestyle based on reduced level of income has both adults under stress in constant arguments. Their teenage son Alex hates the constant arguments between his parents and is starting to rebel. Alex has become friends with Dane, a difficult boy who is always in trouble. Soon Alex is being led astray.

Dominic Rose, a bachelor and teacher, working towards his retirement, is living in a cottage at the edge of the woods, looking after his frail mother and pining for his lost love Clara who went missing years ago, when staying with her grandparents. When Dane and Alex start their pranks, Dominic knows he must deal with it.

The boys are going to learn that actions have consequences…

A very emotional read where everything comes together in the end.

Many thanks to the author and Bloodhound Books for my digital copy.

It starts with a murder and a suicide ... as told by the killer's point of view.

Dominic Rose is a teacher. He's never married and lives with his elderly bedridden mother, Although a good teacher, there are some students who just like to cause trouble.

Kate Winston is a new resident, her teen son, Alexander a student of Dominic's. He's made a friend in Dane, a local boy who has the reputation of being a bad boy. Dane really doesn't like Dominic and talks Alexander into breaking into the man's house. They are seen by Dominic .. there will be consequences for all of them.

This is quite suspenseful from the very first page and holding that intensity throughout. There are twists and turns that lead in one direction and a moment later veers somewhere else. There are many voices heard in this tale and some by way of letters written to "Clara". The conclusion is quite unexpected and explosive. The present and the past meet with surprising results.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this psychological thriller. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

The prologue gives you a taste of the mayhem to follow. A gun shot in a school classroom.

The story focuses on two of the boys caught up in the incident, and their families. Alex is new to the school, having been forced to leave a fee-paying school by a downturn in the family income. Dane is his best friend, a bit of a loose cannon, whose dad is a rich, rough and ready property developer.

We also meet Mr Rose, their English teacher, close to retirement, spending his days trying to inspire children with no interest in learning, his nights caring for his elderly mother and remembering his lost love Clara Morgan.

The characterisation is excellent throughout, with an unusual dynamic of involving two whole families. I really cared about the characters, compulsively racing through the story while dreading the finale, the shooting revealed in the prologue.

When everything starts to go wrong the twists, shocks and jolts will give you whiplash. JA Baker's plotting provides layer upon layer of aftershocks which flow very smoothly, never feeling forced while holding the power to continually surprise .

Highly recommended. Fans of CJ Tudor and Mark Tilbury will lap this up.

4.5*

I've read two books by JA Baker previously and Into The Dying Minutes was one of my favourite books that I read last year, a deep and disturbing journey into a troubled mind. For me JA Baker is one of the most under recognised talents in psychological thrillers, I hope this books achieves the success it deserves and helps attract more readers.

Another winner from Judith Baker. The story is set around a teacher and certain pupils with the underlying stories of their home lives falling apart and the cold case of a missing woman. The story starts off slowly as the characters are developed and grows into a crescendo at the end. There are plenty of twists and "what if's" to keep you wanting more and with an explosive ending. Well worth a read!

This book starts off with a bang, literally. From the opening chapter this book had me hooked!

A story of two unlikely friends who are both trying to cope in their dysfunctional family environments. Alexander is the new kid at school. After his family falls into financial hardships they are forced to downsize, and he and his sister can no longer attend private school. Dane is an odd, immature boy who is going through the rebellious fazes of teen angst.

Like any teenagers they like to test the boundaries but when Dane insists on pranking their English teacher Mr. Rose, Alexander’s conscious is tested. What starts off as a silly prank quickly escalates to something more sinister. When they dust settles who will be left stranding?

I don’t think I can accurately capture how well this story played out. The character building was fantastic and it was one hell of an eerie ending.

JA Baker has a great read here.
She has wrapped some happenings around her fingers and come out with something that will have your brain going one way then another!
The families are characters we’ve met & still see in real life.
Absolutely great

This is a psychological thriller of the very highest order! Ultimately a tale of two dysfunctional families and an ageing English teacher. The Winston family have moved to a small town in North Yorkshire downsizing their house and entire lifestyle. Their son, Alex, struggles to make new friends however he is befriended by Dane, a surly teenager who is prone to trouble. He inevitably leads Alex into bother by terrorising their English teacher who lives in a decrepit cottage away from everyone else with his housrbound mother.

An incident happens in the school which involves the school being stormed by armed police.  The author very cleverly builds up the suspense of what happens and who is involved. Once everyone's interest is suitably piqued she goes back to the start of the story to set the scene. And what a wonderful scene it is! The two families start imploding and the life of the teacher, Dominic Rose, starts unravelling. J.A. Baker is tremendous at setting the scene and goes into great detail in describing events and emotions. As she says well into the book "Home is where the heart is,  however home is also  where the hurt is "

As already stated the suspense in this book is palpable. It is also incredibly powerful and emotive. You will not want to put this book down until the very last page.

Thank you to Bloodhound Books for the ARC which I've reviewed voluntarily.

When Kate Winston and her family move to North Yorkshire, for her it's with a heavy heart as she misses the life she once had .As her children, Jocelyn and Alexander settle into school, Kate is pleased her son has found a friend in Dane . But as time passes Dane leads Alexander astray ..Dominic Rose is an english teacher , a quiet, mild mannered man who lives with his elderly mother on the edge of the woods . Dominic still holds a torch for Clara..she was the love of his life , and as the years pass there has never been anyone who can hold a candle to her ...The Face of Clara Morgan is A Clever , Cloying read ..that flitters from the present day ...to the past to the here and now ...Five stars ..Brilliant storytelling ...

Would you suspect your own child?

When parents are told there has been an 'incident' at school Nina immediately suspects the involvement of her son Dale.

But with dark secrets hidden throughout this story the reader has a glimpse of all the difficulties that can be threaded through family life.

And who was Clara Morgan? Not really a character in the story, but I loved the way she was weaved into the background.

A very clever, twisting, gripping thriller, I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in this book.

Another great read from this author . The descriptive writing and the depth of characters make this a compelling read. The characters are intriguing to say the least. There is mystery. intrigue and betrayal. Fantastic portrayal of teenage characters. The tension continued at the turn of every page which culminated in a nail biting finale. A splendid read !

My reading has been really hit and miss, more miss of late. I love this authors work and so thought, I need to read this. I read it in two halves it was that good, I thought I had guessed the storyline part way through, but I was way off the mark.
Thank you Judith, another book which didn't disappoint!!

Intense start to the book as you take a look through a killer's eyes. There are a few more different perspectives that are used to tell the story dealing with dysfunction families, murder, suicide, and an old teacher. I was engrossed from the start and couldn't put it down. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

Wow! I am speechless! The Face of Clara Morgan is my first read by J. A. Baker. What a fabulous book! It revolves around the idiosyncrasies of a teacher and three families living in the same small town. The author captures the attention of his readers in the first couple pages of the book by telling of a murder and suicide from the killer’s point-of-view. I then spent the entire book trying to figure out who was killed and who was the killer.

The author switches between many characters’ points of view throughout the book. Their stories unfold in chunks between the present and the past. Although, it took me a couple chapters to figure out the author’s style of writing, it made the changes from one character’s voice to another even better. I was drawn in immediately. There are twists and turns throughout, and just when you think you have the plot figured out, another twist is thrown into the mix. You will be left guessing until the end!

Thank you, Bloodhound Books, for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. The thoughts and opinions stated above are my own.

This is one of those books that grabs you straight away, the prologue leaves you feeling breathless.

The story follows different families prior to that fateful day. It slowly brings you through everything that has happened and explains why people finally snap.

Some chapters are letters to Clara that have been written by one of the characters. It left me open mouthed and completely wrong on what I had thought I knew!

A beautifully written story with lovely descriptive writing. An intense and gripping psychological thriller that will have you changing your mind on what you think you know.

Well this one grabs you from the first page. The prologue takes you straight into a school where a classroom of children are being held at gunpoint. Then we go back in time to see what led up to this event. Well constructed with excellent characterisations this a good psychological thriller.

Briefly, Kate Winston and her family moved to Yorkshire after her husband lost his highly paid job. Whilst he is happy in their new slower paced life Kate is not. And she makes her displeasure very obvious. Their daughter Joss is happy but their son Alex hates the constant arguments between his parents and is starting to rebel. He has become friends with Dane, a difficult boy who is bent on pranking one of their teachers, Dominic Rose. Rose is working towards his retirement, looking after his frail mother and pining for his lost love Clara who went missing in 1978 when staying with her grandparents in Scotland. When Dane and Alex start their antics Rose knows he has to stand up to them. But how? How can he stop two teenage boys?

The dynamics between the two families and between the boys and Dominic Rose are very well written. I changed my mind a number of times about where the story was going and what the possible twists were; and even when I got it right I still changed my mind. A book that I enjoyed reading and a 4.5⭐️ read.

We open with mayhem, a gun has been fired and children are crying. We know we are in a classroom. The person holding the gun feels there is no other way and puts the end of the gun in their mouth. This moment will change the lives of many. ⁣

We then flashback to what lead up to this moment. We meet Rob, Nina and their son Dane, Rob is very domineering, while Nina is very passive. Dane seems to be carrying a lot of anger and Nina worries for him. Anthony and Kate have recently moved to the area with their two children, Alexander and Joss. Alexander and Dane become friends but is it a healthy friendship? ⁣

A story told from multiple perspectives. You begin to see what motivates each individual up to this horrible incident. There was a lot going on in the book, but it does tie up nicely at the end. Thank you to Bloodhound books for an advanced ecopy in exchange for an honest review. ⁣

At the start of this book we find out that some sort of major incident involving a gun has occurred in a secondary school. We then go back in time and follow multiple perspectives from characters who are somehow linked to this event.

I thought the writing was really well done and the characters were all very fleshed out. I enjoyed some of the perspectives more than others. I found Dominic a really interesting character and loved those chapters. Some of the others though, particularly the two mothers we follow, were less intriguing to me and a I found myself feeling bored during a lot of their sections of the book.

The ending had a couple of good twists and everything was wrapped up in a pretty bow. However I can’t say that I feel much upon finishing this and I don’t think it will be a stand out read for me. Overall an average read with just enough interesting parts to keep me reading to the end.

I persevered for 10.2 chapters but gave up due to sheer boredom. Chapter 1 was semi-exciting but then it just waffled after that. Bland characters and slow plot.

I got to Chapter 9 and read a slow account of Dominic (the teacher) picking up cat shit from a crawl space in his cellar! The chapter culminated in one sentence of plot driving "action?", old Dom suppressing dark memories. The shit was not needed!

How I read Chapter 10, which is one of Dominic's 1978 love drivels to Clara, who I can only guess is a figment of his imagination, that did not move the story in any direction, god only knows!

Upon beginning chapter 11 and reading a page and half of more misery about self-pitying Kate, I decided this was a waste of my time. And that has annoyed me (which is not the emotion I hope to feel from a book).

Not for me!

Pleased this was a library book and not a purchase.

This story is not boring by any means, this is about a man name Dominic is a unhinged, a dangerous psychopath. In this novel of mysteries you will find out about the characters inside and how the play a part in the story. From Kate Winston, her children Alexander her son, & Jocelyn her daughter. And Anthony with other characters like Dane, Alexander new friend. This is a psychological thriller be warned. Dominic Rose is a bachelor ,and a teacher with the art to judge somebody character by their facial expressions called physiognomy. But it more to Dominic then meets the eye. You will have to read to find out who or whom is Clara Morgan and how she fits in the story, book , or novel. This is a book I enjoyed from the 1st pages to the very ending. This story come out July 19, 2021.

This is not my first book by this author but it ranks up there as one of my favorites. This is a suspenseful story that pulled me into the story from the beginning. It is a well written story about what happens when your current and past collide with a raging force. The characters bring the story to life and also give it a realistic feel. They are connectable and made the story fun and entertaining to read. Who would expect what would happen with just one move. Kate and her family are about to find out what chain events this moved has caused. This is a story I really enjoyed and would highly recommend.

An explosive prologue makes the reader want to know more about what led to such a dramatic event.
As the main characters of two families are introduced it soon becomes clear that things are going to turn out badly but who could predict how the the events of many years ago will become entwined in the present day story. A gripping psychological thriller. Thank you Bloodhound Books for the ARC. This review is my own view of the book.

This book started strong and then went in a different direction for the majority, at about 2/3 of the way through it picked back up and tied it all together with a twist that was a bit obvious if you paid attention to the details. Reading the first 2/3 of the book felt like it was 2 totally separate books and I almost gave up from the back and forth between the past and present and all the subplots. Overall, not a bad book and had a semi-intense ending.

Psychological thriller about two dysfunctional families and an aging English teacher in a small town in England.
Although the book grab me at the end, all in all it felt combobulated. There was too much going on in the three stories of the book with no relation between the families and the teacher story, at points seeming as not belonging in the same book.

A well written psychological story, we meet two dysfunctional families each with their own drama, trials and tribulations to contend with as well as dealing with their teens l, throw in to the mix a burnt out teacher with issues of his own and all their paths will cross but with what consequences.
