As a seasoned FOCUS Missionary, I thought this book would just be the basics and a good refresher for me. After treating it like a personal retreat and really praying with the book rather than just reading it to learn, I’m surprised to say that it has transformed a lot of my own prayer in the way that I live 1) as a disciple of Jesus and 2 as a missionary disciple seeking to evangelize the whole world.
Loved this!! It offered such a tangible way to understand what it means to live as a Christian and to share the Gospel, all while growing together with others on our journey to Heaven
Many books on the Christian Life seem to "dwell in unapproachable light", and indeed were written by saints. Often when reading these sorts of books, I find myself unable to relate to certain aspects of devotion because they seem so much higher than my own experience of the faith. Sure, one can aspire to these heights, and truly achieve them in God's grace, but even though these books may be filled with words of encouragement, frankly it can be discouraging to read as a man who isn't really "there" yet, because there is a gap of knowledge, experience, wisdom which seems to prevent me from even accessing the truths the author is presenting.
Foundations for Discipleship is not like these books. It is a handbook without pretense that is designed to meet a person where they are at, without "dumbing it down" for them. It is straightforward and easy to understand, but is also comprehensive such that a person could just use this book alongside and it could serve most of their needs.
The most valuable and useful thing about this book is that it presents the "spiritual physics" by which a life in Christ is bound, and touches on all the major themes a person would need to know to live authentically as a Christian. And it's organized in such a way that one could find a chapter to speak into a person's life experience at every step of their journey with Christ.
The book is very concrete in that it gives you practical tips to navigate life as a missionary disciple. How to lead a bible study, how to pray, why serving the poor is essential, how to encounter spiritual searchers, and how to draw them into deeper things of God through authentic friendship and freedom.
This book spoke to me and re-convicted me of the timeless, simple, yet powerful truths I have come to profess. And it left me with zeal for the next steps, and genuine encouragement and a roadmap for how to keep walking this path and invite others into it.
i have had to read bits and pieces of this book for my discipleship group, but i decided to lock in for lent and actually read the whole thing. i really enjoyed it! the style of writing is very simple, but honestly that's fitting given the material and audience. this book is exactly what it says it is - the fundamentals of how to live the Christian life. despite having been a Christian for a while, this book was still super beneficial and gave me lots to "chew on", so to speak.
very good primer on building disciples. It is written by and for Roman Catholic campus ministries (so you have to sort through some significant doctrinal differences). However, it very much resembles approaches taken by CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) and The Navigators. Would not recommend as a first read in the subject but does offer a fresh perspective on timeless principles.
