When humanity met the alien Tralingans, everything changed. We were forced to confront the fact that we were not alone in the universe and wrestle with all of the philosophical, ethical, and theological implications of that discovery. In the 26th century, the novelty has worn off. Alien encounters are just Gene Murphy's day job. He had dreamed of high adventure and battles among the stars. Shame that the Tralingans are so friendly and polite. His greatest enemy is a daily battle against boredom on a small satellite in Jupiter's orbit.Until one day, an experiment with a high tech camera reveals an unexpected visitor right under their noses. Will Gene and his crewmates survive when help is months away? Find out in the irreverent thriller Second Contact!
The world building is impressive for a short story, the characters are awesome (especially Septivus; I'm in love), and the humor is great. I hope there will be more Checkpoint Alpha stories. I read Alpha on KU, but I'll buy it for my "feel good" collection.
A short read, but fun. Good pacing with memorable characters and action. Fans of Fassbender's other works will find lots to enjoy here. I really like sci-fi and hope this new setting gets revisited soon.
