The natural order has fallen.

Pieces of the supreme realm Atlas plunge to the surviving realms below. Earth is in anarchy— a new Wild West where every day is a struggle for survival and sanity. The realm of purgatory known as the Shroud is tainted by a wound in its violet horizon, and all beings whose powers come from the Light are withering.

With Creation’s last defenders embarking on their final journey through the afterlife, alliances will be frayed and old friendships broken as new villains are born from the ashes of all living things.
The emotional final chapter in the Book of Death is a genre-bending story of love, loss and the obsession that feeds them both.

The final book of a very innovative series that I am very glad I picked up.

I will start with a little critique: Gagnier's writing style is repeating some sentences in order to give each character a voice and after four books, every time these sentences were repeated it was starting to get to me a little.
I am not sure this is a fair criticism because the repetitions make sense style-wise and for character building. Also, I wouldn't say this if I was reviewing Book 4 in itself (hence the 5 stars). But as a series, by the time I reached book 4 I would have done with reading some mantra and some mentions to previous events slightly fewer times.

Criticism dealt with, it's time for the praises:
Each characters, not only in book 4 but for the whole series, is fleshed out fairly well and you can put yourself in each characters' shoes and see how they would react to a given event.
Gagnier is really good at blending genres and boundaries and in this book he basically brings a celestial battle for creation on the field of a post-apocalyptic new far west a few year in the future. Plot twist are happening until the very end and the characters roster is really big.
I can see Nicholas Gagnier become a personal-favourite author of a lot of people, especially if he keeps producing at the mad rate he is producing at the minute.

Apocalypse is the final book in Gagnier’s innovative and original series that draws readers into a world that they won’t want to leave. The forces of good and evil along with human and supernatural beings collide in this action packed story that revolves around the impending destruction of Creation. The author does a wonderful job orienting the reader to the time, place, and significant events that lead up to the current story providing the reader with a smooth transition into this final book of the series. Once again, his ability to create alternate worlds with such authenticity, accuracy, and magical realism is unparalleled and intoxicates the reader creating highs that the reader will never want to end.

The series’ all-star cast comes together in this epic battle to unite as the last defenders of Creation, and the interconnectedness that the author builds between these main characters is done seamlessly and take this series to a whole new level of genius. These characters are different in many ways, but there are common bonds and past experiences that tie them together making them a force to reckon with, and they are all badasses in their own unique ways.

One of the many things that I love about this author is his ability to describe things in such exquisite detail. More specifically, the descriptions throughout this book give a cinematic feel to the story, and the reader’s mind becomes a movie screen on which words are projected and played out with vibrant colors and audible acoustics:

“A massive tear leaves a pitch-black wound with frilly red edges, like a laceration with no bone beneath, just a pocket of blood and darkness.”

“Hear me!” it cries in a synthetic, almost torturous whine — the worst part is the undercarriage of heavy bass in its voice, holding up the scratchy, static outer layer.”

The author’s writing has not only exceptional detail, but there is a poetic component that adds further richness and layers of introspection and emotion that take readers’ experiences over the edge to another dimension. Overall, the mastery of this story will blow readers away causing them not to be able to put the book down. This book is highly recommended for anyone looking for a one-of-a-kind supernatural adventure.
