AHHH! SELENA!!
Ok, right off the bat, there will probably be spoilers galore in this review which will also probably be pretty long… so buckle up.
Selena I think is the only author out there whose books I can’t stop thinking about for weeks and sometimes months after I read them. This series and the Bully Me series specifically. She, in my opinion, is a master storyteller. Her characters are so well developed and she is so clever with all the scenarios and shenanigans her characters get up to. Her world building is phenomenal and there is never a shortage of tension and drama. It’s so interesting and unique to me. It makes it all very exciting.
I was so worried going into this book about how Harper and Royal coming back together would be handled. Maybe this makes me a sick freak, but I actually loved the way he betrayed her at the end of book 3. That was single handedly the most fucked up thing I’ve ever read in a dark romance. I’ve skimmed through some of the other reviews on here and it seems like most if not all of the one star reviews are people who couldn't handle how dark the series was.
So anyways, I was worried how their rekindling would be handled after this. I, much like most everyone I assume, am not a fan of heroines who are weak and let their bully hero walk all over them. So, I was very happy when in book 4, her recovery was kind of brutal after what he did to her. She is a complete shell of herself and might as well be dead. She tries to kill herself twice I think, and once Royal starts coming around again trying to get her back she’s like HELL NO are you crazy? You had me raped by your brothers and you tried to kill me. I can’t come back from that. I’ll never be the same. Whatever we had? You ruined it. He was trying for a long time to prove to her he loved her, without ever saying he loved her haha, and that he’s not a threat to her, but her protector.
So I’m glad it took a fair amount of time for her to get back with him, although it honestly could have taken way longer than it did, but I’m satisfied with how Selena handled it.
There were a few things that I was kinda meh about, but even still, I thought was handled well the more I read.
Like, I always thought Harper wasn’t angry enough at her abusers. I mean Jesus christ, Royal allowed his brothers to rape her while he watched and then they left her for dead, literally with the intention of her never being found and just dying strung up in the swamp. She’s fucked up over it for a long time, as I mentioned earlier, and I was very happy to see that she didn't just roll over when he tries to win her back. It takes time, thank god. However, I do strongly think that her anger and fear towards his brothers who violently raped her is not enough. That is unforgivable, as is what Royal did obviously. All this shit it. And Preston taking advantage of her when he was taking care of her was also horrible. She also never really shows much anger over this which is super strange to me. She has a few moments where she’s like wtf about it, but idk, it was a bit odd, especially since she comes to love Preston. But hey, I’m not mad about the fucked up nature of their relationship. It’s what Selena does best, and I’m here for it.
So my main irritation, which was actually a much more minor plot point than I was expecting it to be, was that her and Royal and his brothers all believe that she wronged him first. While she and Royal both agree that what he did to her was going way too far as a punishment and that there is no comparison, they all still believe that she wronged him by spying on him and sharing his secrets. I don’t think that she wronged him AT ALL. He gave up the right to feeling betrayed as soon as he decided to go after her right at the beginning of the series. She wanted to take them down because their family is horrible to her and to everyone in the town and they are obviously menaces. All the things they put her through? She had every right in my opinion to spy on him. She didn't owe him or his family shit. Because while she was spying on him and trying to take him down, he was doing literally the same thing to her, and this is never mentioned. So him trying to kill her wasn’t justified in any way, even with his twisted logic.
So basically, I was really not on board with the whole “Harper wronged Royal first” idea. It bothered me a little. But we do see Royal coming to understand why she did it. He gets an intimate look into how fucked up her home life is and he’s like oh… I get it now.
There is also this one part where she is wondering if Royal is capable of murder and I’m scratching my head, like, what? Did you forget what he did to you? The answer is YES. Yes, he is capable of murder. Obviously.
I also thought the secret society element was kind of pointless until I realized, I think that was the point. It was a distraction Baron was using for her. It was just a silly boys club. Nothing super serious. Just another small element in this vast story. The Dolces trampled the club and made it a joke as another form of revenge on the Darling family.
And also, Royal basically being a gigolo and protecting his younger brothers from becoming gigolos too didn’t seem that bad compared to everything else going on in the story. Also the fact that Royal is trying to protect Baron and Duke is kinda laughable, considering they are both total whores and are also violent rapists who are ok with murder. Baron specifically.
OH GOD, Baron… Boy do I have a lot to say about him. I loved his character and the development of his character was so unbelievably interesting. I think he had probably the best and longest storyline so far. That was a long con and fuck me but it was done so well. We learn at the very end of this book just how truly fucked up he is. He is way more psycho than anyone even realizes. I loved the reveal too. I hate big dramatic reveals. He didn't have one. It was a slow reveal of his psychotic deceptions. They figure out he’s Mr. D and when they confront him, he turns the tables on them and makes it seem like he was totally justified. Harper becomes more and more suspicious of him throughout this book and we see him doing weird stuff until the end when Harper is like hell no wtf there is something going on with him. And it turns out? He may or may not be an actual serial killer or something. I am beyond excited to see his and Duke’s series. Although I find it weird that they are apparently sharing Mabel? Weird. I hope they each have their own girl they are fixated on but, we’ll see I guess.
I also loved all the potential setups Selena has in this book. She has added several new characters and is expanding the world in a way that I find truly interesting. She doesn't do super obvious setups for romances either, besides Preston, and it's so interesting! Her world is rich and she can do anything she wants with it. I don't know who will be an important character later, but I think whoever becomes important will be a pleasant surprise. Like Olive. I’m wondering if she'll grow up and become a leading lady. If so? That is so fucking cool. We have just seen little glimpses of her throughout this series that didn’t seem important, but were very clearly there. Fuck. I’m getting pissed and over excited about how amazing of a writer Selena is.
But anyways, all that is what's so fun about the series. Harper and Royal’s relationship is one of the most fucked up ones I’ve ever read. I’m fascinated seeing how she is able to get back with him with all he’s done and everything happening in their town and his family and the Darlings.
I was happy to see that Harper decides that all this shit between the Darlings and the Dolces, specifically Royal’s dad, is what has made all of them so fucked up. So she is trying to help Royal heal in order to save the town. Because she loves him despite what he’s done and because she loves her town and is tired of this feud destroying people's lives. It’s actually kind of beautiful. He doesn't deserve her forgiveness or her help, but she is trying so hard to save him in order to save everyone else from his destruction and also because she can’t help that she loves him despite what he’s done to her. She’s not rolling over for him, she’s in a position to do something good and she takes it. She doesn't want to be like them. She’s over all the heartache and bloodshed and decides to be the bigger person. I felt like it was clear she wasn’t being a doormat, but rather being very mature and not succumbing to the destructive spiral that everyone else has.
So FUCK, having Crystal and Devlin come back was amazing and so perfect. They were “dead” for three years and the conclusion to this story was perfect I thought. It wasn’t unrealistic. We were being teased in such small doses throughout this entire series that when their return finally happened? It felt gooooood. And also the way they found them made sense too. I was afraid Harper was going to turn into a detective to find them, which wouldn’t have made sense if Baron or their families hadn't been able to find them all this time. But it turns out, Preston knew where they were this whole time. The whole Darling family knew they were alive, but just let them go to protect them from the Dolces and tried to make sure no one could find them. It was so beautiful finding this out in this book.
So anyways, they all killed Mr. Dolce because he was the root problem in all the violence. The Dolces left behind and the Darlings they were involved with basically made a truce for the sake of Crystal and Devlin’s children. It was kind of perfect. Them being “dead” for three years and then coming back really put the feud into perspective for the ones left behind and this time helped them all realize in some capacity that they were wrong. They all knew she was right to leave because they all would have killed Devlin. Now that she has three fucking kids with him they are all like oh shit. This isn’t a fucking joke.
I also really liked how there are a lot of elements to the story that go unanswered. To me it’s obviously intentional. I don't believe Selena has forgotten anything. We never get a full explanation of what happened to Royal when he was kidnapped way back in the Bully Me series. We just keep getting bits and pieces. We also never know what exactly happened with Mabel and the twins, although it's obvious we’ll find out once they have their own books. We can assume the guy Royal castrated at the beginning of the series is the Darling patriarch, but we don’t know that until this book. And it’s still kind of ambiguous because it sounds like he castrated more than one Darling. Also, whatever happened to Colt and his family is also just lightly touched on.
I also really like how Selena doesn't have any qualms having dark anti-heroes that are actually, truly, dark AF. A lot of people, authors and readers alike, have hard limits with anti-heroes and I feel like that is so stifling and limiting. If you’re going to have a dark hero, make him fucking dark. What’s more fucked up than a guy who rapes and murders? (I mean, for some reason it’s normal to romanticize a guy who is a killer but not a rapist. It’s weird. Murder is a hundred times worse than rape… I’ve never understood that.) So ya, she has no problems with it and I’m here for it. Royal and Baron and even Duke are some of the most fucked up characters I’ve ever seen. The only reason it's so interesting though is because their characters are very well developed. Selena doesn't just tell you they're fucked up, she shows you in excruciating detail. It's so interesting. Even though they are just absolutely fucked up and dare I say evil? I am just dying to know what’s next for them. So again I'll say it, I think the reason they are so interesting is simply because their characters are well developed.
Also, I think why Royal was so interesting was because you see his struggle from day one. You have been on this journey with him the whole time and have seen him turn into this very dark person and it’s fascinating. It wasn’t a short journey either. I mean, it took 8 books to get here. Honestly I’ll just stop now haha. I could go on forever about why I find Royal’s character so fascinating.
But the family feud aspect as well was similar to Royal’s storyline. We see the feud starting out petty and then just escalating and escalating until it turns violent and deadly and is out of control.
So ya, I was worried they would get a happy ending they didn’t work for, but they didn’t. It wasn’t like that. A happy ending is a stretch in my opinion, but they ended up together, heavily scarred in their own ways. There were no rainbows and sunshine. And it’s obvious everyone and the town has a lot of healing to do and I suspect there will be lots more drama happening with their families. The feud was too extreme. People died and many were maimed and lives destroyed. That isn’t exactly water under the bridge. I’m sooooooooo excited to see what else Selena has in store for this series in this town!
As an aspiring author myself, Selena is truly an inspiration for me. I would love nothing more than to pick her brain about her process and how she comes up with her stories. I want to create a series that gives me all the feels this one did.
I’m really excited to read this series again in the future after it’s been a few years and I can't really remember what happened. Hopefully it’ll be like reading it for the first time again. lol.
