Eventide is a story about the deep and abiding love two sister have for each other as they struggle to make a life for themselves in the backwoods of the Appalachian Mountains. It is a beautiful, ugly, heart-stopping story that explores a mother/daughter relationship with an unimaginable turn and a father/daughter relationship with an unexpected end.
The saddest and most beautiful story! The author put real life on these pages. Characters ring true and the narrative made me feel like I was there too: whether picking beans, listening to a ginger kitten purr, or running from danger posed by a person you should be looking to for protection not harm. Keep tissue handy; you will need them!
Holy Cow. I'm speechless. I'm not kidding. I don't know what to say. I finished this book 24 hours ago and its still with me. I just don't know what to say, besides READ IT!
What a heart wrenching book. I read it in less than 24 hours and cried at the end. Lord did I cry. Poor Lolli. I cannot imagine the horrors of her life. And everything she did to save Bossie. No child should ever face that kind of life but I’m sure so many have. Wow.
One of the most horribly sad, yet incredibly beautiful and moving stories I have ever read. Though some of it is awful and will make you cringe, the prose is exquisite. The story real. I will remember it for a long time.
The writing was okay, the story was incredible sad and just kept getting more and more awful. The relationship and love between the sisters was incredible but awful at the same time just for the fact that they HAD to be everything to each other. There weren’t enough bright spots and the ending wasn’t bright enough to make up for the awfulness that the reader was put through by reading to the end. The character of the mother was wretched and there was just one sentence to explain her past and how she turned into the animal that she was. The father had no back story whatsoever, which was disappointing. It could have been a fuller story if the mother and father characters were more fully developed. I’m not sure if that would make the book better for me because it was overall just too painful to read but at least it would have been a more rounded out view of the family.
The poverty of Appalachia is made apparent in this moving story of two young girls who struggle to survive. With drunken and abusive parents, life is made even more difficult. Fortunately, there are folks who serve as a light in the lives of Lollie and Bossie—folks who encourage and help them. But some very tragic events unfold in their lives that just can’t be undone. Under similar circumstances, how one child reacts to a situation can be so very different from the other. This book will definitely pull at your heart strings as you read of the tragic lives of Lollie and Bossie.
Wow. This book pulled me in, entranced me, broke my heart and then mended it right back together . Sadness and heartbreak for two strong, beautiful little girls in a time and a place that seems close by yet distant, in another world. This gave a small glimpse of truth hidden neatly as fiction , of sisters who lived in the raw hollers of Appalachia in a time not so long ago. Beautiful
Sad, emotional and beautiful. Two young sisters survive abusive parents in Appalachia, by always trying to do the right thing. However, they are children and the even smallest of mistakes can result in horrific consequences. They are strong, capable and smart. The ending is beautiful. There is reconciliation and I had tears in my eyes.
This story of two sisters Lolli and Bossie, is a bigger sweet struggle of a hard life they endured in the Appalachian mountains. Their family was as poor as dirt and the parents were alcoholics who kept the girls depressed and did not want them in a world that was growing and changing. Then a tragedy changed their lives forever.
From the first pages to the end I was seeing this story unfold, and then the twist I never saw coming happened. Such a bond between siblings and lives lived mostly in fear and disappointment. Parts of the story made me laugh and- then cry. The ending was not predictable but welcoming to this reader! I enjoyed the book very much and I give it my recommendation!
I have,a yen for stories of backwoods mountain folk. Simple lives, living off the land, simple entertainment. We would do good to slow down and appreciate this pace of life. Their hard scrabble lives make them appreciate the smallest blessings.
What a heart warming, heart wrenching & heart breaking story. I devoured ever word. The characters were so real that I could shut my eyes & see them. I recommend this book highly.
Such a good read of two sisters who take care of each other. Lillie and Bossie rely on themselves to survive while taking care of their parents. I was so surprised at how this book ended. It’s a quick read but we’ll thought out.
Absolutely beautifully written! Loved this book. The two main characters were easy to care about. A book that is very hard to put down once you start reading, and wishing it would go on longer once it ends.
This is a beautifully written book about a destitute family laden with problems. The relationship between the two sisters is very sweet, and it’s what kept me reading the book. The characters are drawn in a very real way. It’s a quick read. I know I’ll remember Lolli and Bossie for a long time.
Story is well-composed, characters are richly developed, but the story is sad, depressing. Not really anything to learn or keep from this one, in my opinion. I would read another from this author if the storyline isn't so dark.
Loved this book, I wanted more! My stepfather was from the holler, it was a rough life for some. Nicely written, detail was just enough. Made me smile. Thank you
This book was an interesting read. I wasn’t crazy about the ending. Just seemed very sudden. A little ways into the book I started to predict what was going to happen but I was wrong so that’s good.
This was a hard book to read. But in the end, I understand. There is know love like sisters have. I miss mine everyday. Highly recommend, although brutal at times.
