The history of many games is spread out over decades and sometimes even centuries. Baseball and American football emerged as modifications of games that had been played for decades. A bat and ball game was played in England in the mid-18th century and American football started out as a slight variation of soccer, the kicking of a ball on the ground had been done for centuries. A recognizable game was played in medieval times. However, that is not the case with basketball, it has a definite origin in 1891 at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. The inventor was James Naismith and when faced with the challenge of finding a game that could be played indoors in the winter, he got the brilliant idea of hanging wooden baskets on the opposing walls of the gym. The point of the game was to put the ball into the basket. The sport was not only strenuous, it could also be played at whatever pace the players desired. It rapidly grew in popularity in a short time it was being played around the world. The first intercollegiate basketball game was played in 1895, less than five years after it was invented. This book is a biography of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. It is written at the level of late elementary school and in the form of rhyming verse. Most of the page space is taken up by illustrations, in general, there are five lines of verse per page. This is a great book describing the single point creation of one of the world’s most popular games. It should be in the library of every elementary school.
A rhyming picture book biography of James Naismith that focuses on telling how he came up with the original game of basketball.
The rhyme in this is well done and the illustrations are in a style attractive for kids. There are not a lot of picture book biographies of basketballers for lower grades, so I can see this being very popular among little sports fans.
