I have a lot of mixed feelings about this book, particularly its use of "remarkable" to describe some despicable Philippine historical figures. "Influential" might have been more apt for many. Its politics are also all over the place. It puts dictators next to activists next to capitalist billionaires next to revolutionaries. I would definitely not recommend this to history nerds nor would I recommend it for history novices, considering it gives a faulty foundation on which to mount knowledge of our own country's history. Still, I keep it around just so I know facts about historical figures and I can remember who did what and who died when. Nothing more, nothing less. Pretty sad.

What makes one a Filipino?

This thought has occurred multiple times while I was reading the book. Although very entertaining because of the art and info that it offers, I can't help notice a few things:

1. Some people are of Chinese descent but migrated and lived in the Philippines. Legally speaking they are in fact Filipinos especially if they have acquired citizenship and a PH passport. But then again, what makes a Filipino truly a Filipino? What does a "true" Filipino look like?

2. I noticed that the information that was disclosed was a bit shady. There were people that their achievements and also the controversies attached to them were both mentioned. But to some, all that was mentioned were only positive things. For example, Rodrigo Duterte's achievements were "over-glorified" but what about the Human Rights violations and the EJK that was very much visible during his term? Even his administration's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines was praised. Well I don't know about that.

I cannot complain really. If I am frustrated with the book and the people who made the list then I should have made one myself. A list that for me truly is the 100 remarkable Filipinos in Philippine History. But this only proves that the list reflects the author himself. I have to respect that.
