For three hundred years, the Blackmoore house has harbored a valuable secret ...
The Blackmoore sisters learn about this secret from the dying lips of the historian they hired to decipher their centuries old family journal. Too bad he never gets the chance to tell them exactly what he has uncovered...or where to find it.
But someone else knows where to find it, and they are prepared to take it from the Blackmoore’s no matter what the cost.
The sisters are forced to put their newly discovered paranormal powers to the test as they fight off treasure stealing pirates in between figuring out clues from ghosts, decoding an old journal, finding their way through an underground maze and dodging quicksand, bottomless pits and whirlpools.
Oh, and did I mention the dark and mysterious stranger that keeps showing up--is he friend or foe?
Of course, their trusty cat, Belladonna is around to give them a helping hand when they need it ... and she has a secret of her own.
Will the Blackmoore sisters be able to figure out where the treasure is and get to it before the dead tide turns and hides it for another three hundred years?
USA Today bestselling author, Leighann Dobbs, discovered her passion for writing after a twenty year career as a software engineer. She lives in New Hampshire with her husband Bruce, their trusty Chihuahua mix Mojo and beautiful rescue cat, Kitty.
Her book "Dead Wrong" won the "Best Mystery Romance" award at the 2014 Indie Romance Convention.
Her book "Ghostly Paws" was the 2015 Chanticleer Mystery & Mayhem First Place category winner in the Animal Mystery category.
3.49999 stars to Leighann Dobbs's Dead Tide, her third in the Blackmoore Sisters Mystery series. Gosh, it was almost there this time. I'm really starting to enjoy this series and I've seen great improvement in the author's style, word choice and character exploration. At first, I felt the series was a little too simple, but it's jumped a few light years ahead in this book. I find myself thinking about the characters all day long, hoping they discover the secrets that keep carrying from book to book. Good job Ms. Dobbs! I'm fairly certain the next one will rise to a higher rating.
Story The third installment in this series focused on the younger two Blackmoore sisters while continuing to explore their family history which undoubtedly must have some witch blood it in somewhere. (I blame Isaiah the pirate!) When modern-day pirates off the coast of Maine search for the treasure map to the ship that was lost at sea 300 years ago, the dirty little secret of the town sheriff finally reveals itself. The Blackmoore girls are close to translating the book they found in their attic, but the translator mysteriously dies before he can finish (nope, it's not a heart attack). Then so does his brother. (OK seriously, these girls just invite the trouble in, don't they?) By the end, the treasure is discovered. The pirates are captured. But what happens in between is a syrupy secret (especially that hush hush stuff with Cal Reed -- the super suave antiques dealer expert) because I think it's what will carry into books 4, 5 and 6!
Strengths The Blackmoore sisters really start to become well-rounded characters. The land and background setting are deeply described. You really start to feel like you're on the beach watching the action happen. I want to visit the Sticks & Stones Shop.
Weaknesses It's starting to transcend the mystery genre and cross into the romance genre. I'm not too interested in this direction so I hope it doesn't push the boundries too much more.
Final Thoughts Get it. Read it in 3 hours. Enjoy the humor and dialogue. And tell me what you think!

Okay, something happened in this slightly longer book. Something for the worse, sadly.
The charm of the previous stories (approximately 4 hours long) didn't really stand up to the challenge of 2 more hours of content. I felt like it dragged and was a bit dreary.
The Blackmoore sisters ended up seeming more and more on the dense, not-so-bright side of the intelligence spectrum as this mystery progressed. The clues could be dressed up in blinking neon lights and fireworks and "the girls" missed them anyway.
Not to mention, their grandmother was a "witch" and yet they are completely ignoring all the supernatural facts happening around them - including ignoring Belladonna towards the end, even after previously acknowledging her seeming to always knowing or pointing towards some clue - until things blow up in front of them or start to glow or whatever. As if ghost manifestations aren't enough. *sigh*
I finished the first 3 books in the Blackmoore series because I’d paid for them. That’s the extent of it. I’m saddened to say that the books were terribly underwhelming. The character development is several lacking; the plot is easy to figure out. The romantic relationships have no basis besides adding a few more characters. The“powers” are just thrown out there and accepted immediately as if the very thought was normal yet they say they are just getting used to it. If so where do we see the conflict? The writing style is elementary. I couldn’t even tell you how many times someone’s stomach clenched. The family, house, location etc. all had great potential but justice wasn’t done. I won’t be finishing the series.
It's been a while since I've read one of Leighann Dobbs' novels and I'd completely forgotten how much of an enjoyable read they are. This book, the third in the Blackmore Sisters series, was provided for free by InstaFreebie and the author. I have read the first book in the series, and this new one has rekindled my interest to go on and read more about the sister's mysteries. A quick, easy, guilty pleasure of a read.
This book took a more supernatural turn than the last books. It had also a lot more unbelievable scenarios and a lot more comments from the cat. However, the characters are great and you grow to love them more. The stories are becoming a little more fantastical which kind of makes the reader sit back and analyze situations where they want to say “that could never happen”, and I’m not talking about the part where Celeste is talking to her grandmother or a ghost. there was exciting adventure of the Indiana Jones type, but a lot more death than previous books. The stories are interesting despite having to suspend disbelief quite often and I’ll keep reading them.
This has been an awesome series for me. We have four sisters fighting together to save their home and a treasure an ancestor left. They found an old journal they have to decode using a book of poetry. Not easy. While doing this they have a crooked sheriff and pirates after them. Oh and they discover they have powers. You have mystery, intrigue, murder and romance. Dead bodies keep showing up around them. Can't ask for more in a cozy.
I really enjoyed this book, a very fun read. We continue on with the search for treasure, if you haven't read the previous books I don't think that you will have any trouble reading this. We see the sisters developing some unknown abilities, strangers, a nasty sheriff that keeps cropping up and a cat who seems to know all, what more could you ask for? The sisters are all likeable characters and I had fun hunting treasure with them. I can't wait to start the next book.
I've enjoyed the first three books in this series, but the plots are fairly basic and they could be longer, with more detail, and deeper characterization. Think of this series as if it were Hershey's Kisses and not a Godiva truffle. They both have their place, but you wouldn't mistake them.
These books are great when you just need some mind candy.
Dead Tide by Leighann Dobbs is the 3rd book in the Blackmore Sisters series and it did not disappoint. In book 2 we were introduced to the idea of buried treasure on the sister's property and the pirates who were trying to get to it. This one picks up that theme and runs with it. The sisters find themselves dealing with modern day pirates and of course the corrupt sheriff who still has it out for them! Dead tide is when the water will be at it's lowest in over 300 years and prime time to discover the buried treasure, but who will get to it first?
The sisters all have their own special "powers" and they'll all have to rely on them to get to the bottom of this mystery. After the last book and the failed attempt by pirates to steal their ancestor's treasure, the sisters have been curious about exactly what is buried on their property. A map is found, but because it's written in code they must find the matching key to unravel exactly where this treasure may be. They'll get help from Morgan's past and once again love interest Luke who now works to stop pirates, but can he protect the girls from impending danger and doom?
The sisters will have to rely on their "powers" and friends to get to the bottom of this one. And of course their ever knowing cat Belladonna! After all if anyone deserves to find this buried treasure it's them, it is their land and their ancestor who buried it in the first place. There will be chills and thrills, a little romance and some laughs as they find do their research and find the clues to unlock the mysteries of the map. The treasure lays waiting to be discovered after 300 years, but is the danger in finding it worth the risk? With Dead Tide coming any day now time is running out for the sisters. Can they discover the centuries old map and find what rightfully belongs to them before the tide comes back in and drowns them all? Or will the pirates get there first and steal the treasure or worse kill the sisters?
These are fun, quick reads with great characters. I love the whole sisters theme, perhaps because I only have sisters and it's easy for me to imagine the three of us out there trying to solve crimes. Granted we don't have any super powers like the sisters here do, but the whole idea makes me chuckle. Leighann Dobbs is a favorite of mine and has entertained me with some really great books over the years. She's especially got a way with her cozy mysteries! If you're looking for a series that's fun, takes place in present day and offers some great characters this is the one for you! Happy Reading!
Perkins Cove (Noquitt, Maine, Atlantic Ocean). Rita’s Eat’s Diner. Celeste Blackmoore (3rd. born) had hired Professor Reinhardt Skinner (historian) to decipher a 300 yr.-old journal that had belonged to Captain Isaiah Blackmoore (great-great-great-great-great grandfather, import merchant). He never finished telling her about it. The EMT’s pronounced Professor Skinner dead on site. Sheriff Overton had arrived at the scene.
That evening Celeste had to let Morgan Blackmoore (1st. born), Fiona Blackmoore (2nd. Born), & Jolene Blackmoore (youngest, college student) know what had happened to the investigator. Morgan & Fiona who owned/operated the Sticks & Stones curio shop. Later, the girls came across Mateo (colleague) at Reinhardt’s office. Jolene helped Jake (Fiona’s BF, former Noquitt & Boston PD Detective) in his new PI business. Had Jake Reinhardt had been murdered. Calvin “Cal” Reed was also willing to help find the missing poetry book which contained the codes to decipher the journal. What did Sandra Storm (Noquitt Tribune) find out from Irene Penster? Captain Isaiah Blackmoore Ocean’s Revenge lay at the bottom of the sea. Rumor has it he was really a pirate. Sheriff Overton had come to tell Celeste Professor Skinner had been poisoned with aconite (Wolfsbane plant). Delphine Jones (lawyer) had arrived just as an arrest was about to made. Judge Sanderson had not signed the arrest warrant in the right place.
Would the bunch find the Ocean’s Revenge & possibly the treasure before Scarface (pirate) & Eyepatch (pirate)? What is going on with Cal & Celeste? What about Sheriff Overton & Goldlinger?
I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.
A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well mystery written book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great mystery movie, or better yet a mini TV series. A very easy rating of 5 stars.

The first book was okay, the second frustrated me, the third was a little better and gave me hope that the rest will get better, too. The author has favorite words and seemed to have let up on the amount of times characters say, "Well." It was a nice reprieve, and I can only hope the copious repetition of the word fades more and more. She did find a new favorite word to use over and over. Crunched.
I find the plot interesting, but the characters are lacking. While I'm fine with romance elements and usually like them, most of these romances have felt pushed together very suddenly, just to partner the characters up. There is a lack of feeling, emotion, and connection with these characters. I simply don't care all that much about them because the writing does a lot of telling and tends to make the girls feel superficial. They also go between acknowledging and understanding they have abilities, to acting like those abilities couldn't possibly exist. It seems to be a theme and it's annoying. It shows no character growth.
There's a disconnect between these women learning about their abilities and trusting them. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. They are kinda stupid, though they were complete idiots in book two. In this one, there's still obvious answers they don't get when spelled out or shown. They come to the answers in roundabout ways that make no sense, then realize they should have paid more attention to their gifts later on. It's a repeating theme that gets old fast.
The main protagonist for this instalment is Sister No. 3 Celeste, who sees ghosts. The historian they asked to help decipher the old family journal drops dead just before he reveals what he has found, and Celeste is arrested for his murder.
Clues from a couple of maps and a poem book point to a buried treasure that will only be accessible during a "Dead Tide". The sisters, with Morgan's Luke and Fiona's Jake, are keen to find it before the treasure hunters. We also have their longtime playboy antiquities friend Cal, who used to be Celeste's best friend but is now showing romantic interest towards her. I did find their mutual declaration of love a bit cheesy. But this is a cozy so I guess that's ok.
We also have a new character, the mysterious Mateo, who pops up a couple of times to give them some clues. I'm guessing he's going to be youngest sister Jolene's love interest in the next book?
This is the book where the sisters start to embrace their "gifts" and using them to defeat the bad guys. I imagine we'll see more of these gifts in action as the series progresses.
It also seems the family buried treasure arc is complete, and we know what the deal is with the town's sheriff. From what I can gather from the Epilogue is that the sisters will be going out into the world for more adventures.
All in all, it's a light and fun read for the holidays.
Usually, I don’t like a series. I prefer to move on to something else after I close the book. Plus series are often times made up of fillers and repetition. Having read the first and second in this series, I knew what to expect and prepared myself for a corny, quick read. Then the author surprised me with action and a well thought out flow. With every successive book, the reader learns more about these sisters as they learn more about themselves. The premise of the book is that these four orphaned adult sisters live in an old seaside house, filled with unknown treasures, sought after by unscrupulous modern day pirates. The author throws in corny love interests and magical powers for good measure. The reader gets to experience different points of view, including an adorable and unpredictable cat with mystical undertones. I wouldn’t consider this book and its puzzles to be intellectual, but the author offers enough twists and turns to keep it a little interesting. If you are looking for an Agatha Christie mystery, keep looking, but if you want a light and cutesy read then you may have found it in this series. I recommend reading them in order, because the pieces of the puzzle are progressive. Moving on to the next one. I recommend this book.
This third book carries on from the events of the second book, so it's a good idea to read them in order. The sisters have hired a professor to help them with the journal they found in the attic, but he drops dead before he can tell them what he's discovered. And, of course, the sheriff is convinced that the sisters are up to no good and have murdered the poor chap. So now it's up to the sisters to keep their names clear and solve the mystery of the journal before they end up in jail, or worse.
The mystery element this time around was more of a codebreaker puzzle, and there was yet more romance going on, along with even more of a treasure hunt than in the last book. The supernatural is starting to come more to the fore as well, with Celeste's ghost-whispering moving to another level, Morgan's instincts reaching new heights, and Fiona's abilities with crystals doing some very odd and unexpected things. Jolene, meanwhile, is training as a PI, so she's getting pretty good at picking locks, hacking computers and kicking arses. There are some particularly bad guys in town too, not to mention the despicable sheriff, and with a 300 year old shipwreck to be found, the sisters, the loves of their lives and their cat are really going to have to go for it to win the day.
This was another fun, effortless read, and fastened off most of the remaining plot threads left dangling in the previous two books. I know there are more books starring the Blackmoore's and Belladonna, but this one felt like it finished off at a good point, so I'm leaving them here for now. I might pick up more of the books in future, but this book and the previous two filled topped up my light reading needs for now.
The Blackmore sisters are still hunting for the family treasure their ancestor’s handwritten book and a poetry book that was used to crack the code in the ancestor’s book. Their family had pirates and they hid the treasure and everyone seems to be on the hunt for it and trying to remove the sisters from the trail as well. This book had more of a supernatural element compared to the others. Celeste has been seeing the ghost of her grandmother and her grandmother is telling her to look within for their gifts and the girls are just starting to see and use their special gifts. I liked the supernatural element it added a twist to the story. The girls are fighting off the pirates to find the treasure and it almost had a Lara Croft or Indiana Jones feel to it which made the story very entertaining and adventurous. Very fast paced story when they were searching for clues and fighting pirates. I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Number 3 in the series continues the pirate theme. After the adventures with the modern-day pirates in book #2, the Blackmoore sisters are at it again. This one centers on Celeste, who is the one who sees and talks to ghosts. They hear that a pirate raid is planned at "dead tide", the lowest Atlantic tide, which occurs every 300 years. Presumably this will expose underwater caves or other entrances that the pirates plan to use to get to another treasure. The girls and their boyfriends hurry to decode a journal left by their ancestor, and to figure out what the maps they find (a maze, and a treasure map?) refer to. The girls discover more about their paranormal powers, and try to learn to use them. An easy read, entertaining, and held my interest.
I did like this one. It was a continuation of the mystery from the previous book, and the mystery wrapped up in this one, which was good. Once again Belladonna stole the show. I love her so much. I really adored that her perspective was in this one, but I especially loved, loved what she did to the bad guy in this one. It was just so funny and very fitting. Even though I knew it was coming, the romance came out of nowhere. The romance was unnecessary in my opinion, but I have to understand that this series is giving each sister her own HEA, however as an avid romance reader it just doesn’t quite work for me. Loving all the paranormal elements though, and am curious to see where it goes in future books. Also curious about Matteo. Overall, it was a good read.

3rd in in the series, Leighann Dobbs has a fun ideas and fun stories that I tend to enjoy. This is a fun story where it feels like she could of wrapped up with this one making it a trilogy while leaving on a hanger for more much like Gone With the Wind. Now, I am happy to say that these sisters to continue on for more books and fun paranormal adventures and mystery!
Like the others is it is cozy - romance/mystery but this one adds a bit more to the magic these sisters have showing them more magical then the others.
We got our clean murder, a little romance with old friends, hidden treasure and ghosts. if your looking for a fun read this is a quick read that hits these themes.
Each book of the series focuses on one of the 4 Blackmoore sisters who live in a 24-room house on the Maine coast. This one focuses on the one who sees ghosts. The saga continues, though, on the buried treasure of one of their ancestors and the competing bands of ruthless treasure hunters who will kill to acquire the treasure. Each of the books is rather short, maybe of novelette length. Around 150 pages? The plot is simple with a little bit of romance thrown in. And Belladona, an ageless cat who seems to know exactly what the girls need to be focusing on.
An exciting adventure in discovery, four sisters in a small coastal town try to discover thier ancestral history while fighting off an evil sheriff and modern day pirates with a little romance bubbling up in the amidst it all.Vibrant caracters carry you away into the mystery of the sisters and thier hidden talents. Leighann Dobbs is an extraordinary writer in the cozeymystery community as well as other genres ,you won't want to miss out on any of her fabulous array of novellas or novels.Aquier a copy of"Deadly Today so you yourself can enjoy reading it as much as I have. 😊Kat
The sisters hire someone to help decipher an old journal, but guess who ends up being murdered, before he can tell them his findings? Of course, Sheriff Overton wants to put them in jail for murder, but he has an agenda which will finally be revealed. The hunt is still on for an ancestor's pirate treasure, and this means more run-ins with modern day treasure hunting pirates. While Luke and Jake are helping out their lady loves, seems like something romantic might be brewing between Cal and Celeste. ...and who is the mystery man Jolene keeps meeting in the oddest of places?
As the series continues, the sisters' powers grow, so if you are put off by paranormal activities, like ghosts giving hints in casual conversation with Celeste or glowing crystals which shatter in the presence of evil and wreak havoc on the bad guys, then you should stop after reading book 2. These paranormal events are not part of my usual choice of reading material, but I'm suspending my disbelief and just going along with the story. There was lots of action in this one and I couldn't wait to see how the author would handle the ending.
These are such fun books. All the characters are great, and I love learning more about each of the sisters. But that darn sheriff, always has it out for the girls. Although, they do seem to be in the middle of a lot of the controversies. The fun part of these books is that there are always enough twists and turns, literally in this one, that the author keeps you guessing as to what exactly is going to happen. And you just have to love Belladonna! Looking forward to the next book.
Goonies forever! I wanted to say that this entire book. Pirates, treasure and romance. This is a cute cozy mystery with a few intense fighting scenes, the most intense is with Belladonna. Love that cat! This is a story of four sisters finding out about themselves, their family history and love along their perilous journey to freedom. They can’t take my freedom! I also wanted to say this the entire book. Great escape book that will make you laugh as long as you have a since of humor and a silly side.
