Are you curious about biblical Christian meditation? Through stories, practical advice, and helpful prompts, Rick Hamlin guides Christians to center their minds and hearts on God as they seek to hear the still small voice above all the noise and chaos in the world. Rick Hamlin has been unpacking the power of prayer in Finding God on the A Train and Ten Prayers You Can’t Live Without and the special Guideposts book, Prayer Works . In this new book, you will discover The steps are simple, and at the end of each chapter Hamlin offers specific exercises to enhance your practice. “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take his cross daily and follow me,” Jesus said to his followers. Meditative prayer offers a rich resource to do just that. Silence speaks volumes and becomes a tool for all Jesus followers.
Sometimes I think I must be nuts because for me writing is a way to relax. Sure, I get anxious about it and I'm pretty critical of what I write, wondering if I can ever fix it. But then, when the words come and I'm in a grove, I'm not going to be critical of anything. Until the next morning!
Do you make time to pray or meditate each day? Let’s be honest here, ever feel like it’s a lot of work or you're not doing something right? I do 🙋🏻♀️.
In 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞, Rick Hamlin offers some helpful and practical guidance on how to praise God.

I enjoyed how Rick combines life stories, guiding techniques, as well as Christian Scriptures and other quotes. It feels very personal and not preachy. This is a wonderful resource for those seeking to either begin or refresh their Christian mediation practice.

TITLE: Even Silence Is Praise: Quiet Your Mind and Awaken Your Soul with Christian Meditation AUTHOR: Rick Hamlin PUB DATE: 2.8.2022 Now Available
How do we learn to keep our hearts and minds still for our spiritual life?
Rick Hamlin has the perfect advise through this book, Even Silence Is Praise, for Christians to hear the still small voice above all the noise and chaos in the world.
I found the book focused and the practice easy to follow. I have bought a few copies for my friends and family that I know would love to strengthen their spiritual life.
Anyone who wants to begin a quiet time with God or experience new watts to spend time alone with God, this book is for you. nothing exoctic , nothing weird, just being alone and hearing God.
It’s one of the most powerful resources for every Christian—and often under used—prayer with the God of the Universe. Author Rick Hamlin has spent decades on this discipline, written other books on the topic and many articles as the long-term editor at Guideposts magazine. In EVEN SILENCE IS PRAISE, Hamlin helps readers view prayer from a different vantage point: silence. Twelve easy to read, well-written chapters are full of insights for every believer. Each chapter ends with a brief “Meditative Moment” to help you apply the content into your everyday life.
What author will tell his reader to pause reading? Hamlin will and here’s an example: “One caveat about this book or anything I’ve ever written about prayer. As you’re reading along, if you feel the urge to stop and give yourself over to a meditative moment or minutes or half an hour, go for it. To stop reading might be so much better than to keep reading. These are only words. Abandon them at any moment. What you have inside of you is rich, wonderful, baffling, transformative and fulfilling. Have at it.” (Page 9)
Every Christian can find practical wisdom from EVEN SILENCE IS PRAISE. I highly recommend this book.
Prayer moves God's heart and it's in the silence that we can hear him best. Rick Hamlin gives advice to help us pray and meditate in his book, like taking a few minutes each day in the silence, finding the right place to meditate... In those moments of silence and prayer God will reveal what is in our hearts and what needs to be changed. Prayer transform us,heals us and allow us to become like Christ.
It's a good book about prayer, I like all the tools the author offer is in his book to improve our prayer life.
Thank you in advance to the author, Rick Hamlin, for providing a complimentary review copy. A positive review was not required nor requested, and all words are my own.
I started getting bible study books in the fall of 2020. I had, up to that point, been reading quite a few Christian self-help books through Revell (a division of Baker Books).
In 2020, I did some bible studies (Moody Publishers) and found them to be fascinating, but at times – so much work.
Last year, in 2021, I found the (in)courage bible studies, and I was on the launch team for the following ones:
Courageous Joy Courageous Influence Courageous Kindness
It culminated in me buying Courageous Simplicity. Why am I mentioning them?
Simplicity.
What I liked about the (in)courage line – the books had relevant reminders; examples; a simplicity; and a “friendly”, almost “community” feeling. It was like a conversation with a support group or a prayer group.
When I saw this book, the title grabbed me right off – Even Silence is Praise.
What kind of a book would this be? What was the author’s style? I hadn’t read any of his work before, despite his association with Guideposts, a magazine I read here or there for about the past 30 years.
This is one of those books that isn’t a “one and done” kind of read. It isn’t a bible study you work in and then move on. It’s more or less a reference book for everyday or when one needs a refresher course in learning to meditate to pray. In these times, a little “silence” is refreshing. So, the book is quite relevant, if not much needed.
The preface of the book was interesting if not a bit humorous. I had to laugh at the FBI show reference. I do watch FBI: MOST WANTED. As the author didn’t indicate which one it was, it is a treat to perhaps think that was the version.
But, he uses that to segue into the beginnings of this work and putting ourselves at ease to change the way we live.
Hamlin goes over the ways that meditative prayer helps us and how we can fit it into our seemingly busy lives. This is both a book about prayer and meditation. And, right off he addresses the many psychological and physical benefits we get from meditation as well as addressing the different forms.
It almost comes off as a conversation with a friend or a counseling session with a pastor with relevant bible quotes, references to spiritual and other leaders, and suggestions. His writing is easy to understand and follow.
Hamlin also does something unique – he encourages the reader to stop reading to meditate.
Some of the chapter highlights:
📖 Pick a Time and Place 📖 Listen to Your Anger 📖 Hear the Worries 📖 Put Away Your Phone (Every Now and Then) 📖 Hold a Good Thought for Others
Hamlin’s easy, laid-back style puts everything into an easy and relatable perspective needed for these uncertain times. His practical examples fit almost anyone’s situation or any lifestyle. He also references social media and reactions to what we see and read online. That part resonated with me as part of what I do for Bookstagram and book reviews involves being online.
There are so many good points about this book, it is hard to really to highlight without re-writing the entire book here.
Those who are familiar with the author might want to pick this up. Those who want a different approach to meditation with prayer or vice versa – this is a book to look at.
I definitely enjoyed this and will keep it close at hand.
Rick Hamlin says he doesn’t consider himself an expert on prayer, even though he’s written several books and articles about it. His focus on writing about prayer comes from the desire to improve in his own prayer life and sharing what he’s learned with others. Even Silence is Praise is a book on prayerful meditation, praying not with words but in silence, carving time out of your day not just to talk to God but to listen to see what they are saying in response.
Since it is based on Hamlin’s personal attempts to improve his spiritual life and draw closer to God, Even Silence is Praise is a deeply personal book, almost a memoir at times, as Hamlin shares his own prayers and practices in his life. In one chapter, he tells readers to try to focus on one word—God, sin, Christ, Lord, strength, rest, soul, wait, heart…you get the idea—and just see where your thoughts go on that meditative and contemplative journey. Other chapters focus on self-awareness and using silence as a time to take introspective inventory of ourselves.
Silence can be the mark of comfort in a friendship. You don’t always have to talk to fill the silence because the silence isn’t awkward. You are free to just be with each other, alongside one another, experiencing life together. He talks about taking the train home from work and a neighbor sitting down next to them, completely engrossed into something she was listening to. When she realized she was sitting next to someone she knew, she did the polite thing you’d not do for a stranger—take the earbuds off and chat pleasantly about whatever. Instead, he told her “Why don’t you keep listening to your book? We can talk starting at the 145th St. stop.” He noticed and respected her need for silence. In the same way, your relationship with God doesn’t have to be all talk. Be willing to sit in the silence.
Each chapter ends with a Meditative Moment, urging readers toward some practical activity that expressing the content of the chapter. Some of them can be a bit unnerving at first, it’s so different from the active go-go-go mentality we have in society, but they’re all useful and compelling and peaceful. This section is the meat of the book, helping readers put into practice the lessons learned in the chapter.
Even Silence in Praise is a beautiful exploration of the value of silence, calling readers inward into the inner life of faith to worship God with their imagination, their playfulness, and their silence. Harlin gives readers a new way to communicate with God, one that is fully embodied and rich in meaning and purpose. The mystical element of faith is one often lacking in today’s rational Western Christianity. Hamlin captures some of that mysticism and invites readers into an unfamiliar but empowering way of seeking the Divine.
Rick comes at meditation from a Christian perspective, reminding us that it is biblical but society and culture over time has adopted it into pagan practices. He talks of silence, schedules, time and space, prayer, God’s Word, emotions, distractions, sin, intentionality, praise, etc. He ends each chapter with meditative moments and space for reflections. At the very end of the book there is a 30 day plan for prayer and an appendix of Psalms to reflect on.
I enjoyed this one as Rick brought up ideas and methods to incorporate meditative prayer into our lives that I hadn’t thought of before. It was definitely informative and insightful, and I appreciated the scriptural way he revealed the importance of prayer, faith, and even humility and repentance. I would recommend this for those who are looking to deepen their prayer lives but even just in general, this book offers a lot of insight beneficial to spiritual growth.
Rick Hamlin has a relaxed style of writing that makes this book easy to read, but it is full of great ideas and an approach to prayer and meditation that makes sense to an ordinary person living a busy life.
I've never really gotten into meditation because it seemed so difficult. I thought I needed to empty my mind and sit in silence for long periods of time to get any benefit out of it. But Hamlin describes ways to ease into meditation, to focus on our senses, to actually make use of distractions, rather than being defeated by them. The personal experiences he writes about are easy to relate to and written in a light, humorous style. But they illustrate important points, as well.
Each chapter ends with an exercise in meditation. They can be short or long, depending on the person. Each uses a different method, so there should be something that will work for every individual. I have tried some of them and found them relaxing and meaningful. At the end of the book is a plan for "Thirty Days of Prayer." I have not yet tried this, but I am looking forward to starting it soon.
I would recommend this book especially for those who have heard of Christian meditation, but think it's too hard for them. I think they will be pleasantly surprised.
I greatly enjoyed this read on contemplative prayer and I highly recommend it! In a time when we as a culture are trying to refocus on slowing down and focusing within, this is truly a powerful and timely writing.
Contemplative prayer, as is named the act of mindfully praying, is an appropriate topic this day and age. In a time when we as a culture are focusing on meditation, mindfulness and yoga, from various religious and cultural backdrops, the mention and discussion of the Christian variant is both timely, appropriate, and supported. Thank you!
The author does a great job trying to describe the basics of contemplative prayer while being supportive and showing that it is what you make of it! This writing has significant Biblical references as backdrops to support, which I greatly appreciate.
I am very impressed with this read and look forward to sharing with colleagues! Read this, you won't be disappointed.
As an added benefit, the author has many discussions on how to start contemplative prayer, including a 30 day plan at the end. This is a great jumping point for all who are uneasy or have questions!
Want a down to earth guide of how to quiet your mind and awaken your soul? This is the book just for you. Written in a way that makes it easier to understand and easier to practice. I believe we overly complicate the process. Rick takes us on a journey, with different tips on how to "find peace beyond the chatter" and points where he guides you to actually practice those tips with meditative moments built right in the book. Right now. Here in this space. Set your timer and sit in silence for one minute. It's that easy, but yet it's not so simple. I think in a world that is built to be busy, rushed, every moment booked and double booked, we need to take time out for moments dedicated on quieting our minds and focusing in on being in the moment, in quiet, in solitude, in an act of worship, in an act of praise, or prayer, in peace, in so many different ways and yet none of it makes one feel uneasiness nor awkward. I really enjoyed this, and found the thirty days of prayer included at the end even more helpful after finishing this book. *I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*
I just finished reading this book. A very enjoyable easy to read book. Mr. Hamlin's writing is like a shared relaxing conversation between two aquaintances. The book itself was very relaxing to read, and l gained some nuggets of wisdom on Christian meditation. As a Christian, I had been reluctant to get this book because of the word meditation. I am not into the new age meditation that is popular now. But I took a chance and purchased this book. I'm glad l did. There is a wealth of information here on meditation for the purpose of growing spiritually and deepening your awareness and relationship with God. He doesn't go off into some scary mystical tangent. The whole book stays centered on God. This is one of those books where I will have to revisit to remember the suggested techniques. I love the quotes from some of the Christian giants from way back when, very introspective. I had to Google a lot of those names to learn about them, as well as, some artists he referenced in the book. And the bonus is the thirty day prayer guide at the end. I was surprised when l got to the end. I kind of wanted it to go on : ).
2023 bk 225. For those interested in meditation techniques or methods of prayer, this is a good introduction to the subject providing a guide for the general reader. It draws from many deeper sources and prevents the information in ways that can be easily incorporated into a busy life - particularly that of a commuter who uses public transport. That is probably my one beef about the book - the author has difficulties looking outside his own life and gender to how people live and work who don't mirror his life. There are many good suggestions here, but most people will have to figure out how to make them work or realize that they won't work well in their own lives. I just hope and pray that those individuals who can't make something work will realize that they aren't the failure and that if a person learns one new technique that will work for them, then the author has succeeded in helping that person begin a new practice. For me - I'm going to work on putting that cell phone away for a period of time each day. It may be only five minutes, but that is a start.
In Even Silence is Praise, Rick Hamlin presents a gentle and thought-provoking study of the intersection between prayer and meditation. He leads the reader through a process of considering new ideas to enrich a Christian’s prayer life and includes many practical suggestions. In the Appendices, he provides two helpful resources, Thirty Days of Prayer and Snippets of Psalms to Turn To.
Our world has us going a mile a minute, and sometimes even faster. It is nice to think about how to slow down, be quiet, listen, and meditate on God’s Word. If we were honest, we might all admit that our prayer practices could use some improvement. Hamlin helps us see how capturing even a moment to meditate on God’s goodness can allow Him to speak to us and transform our lives.
An accessible introduction to Christian disciplines around meditation and prayer.
The author speaks of his own journey and experiences and introduces the reader to certain basic principles of Christian "mindfulness." Included are subjects such as meditation, centering prayer, lectio divina reading, intercession, getting rid of electronic distractions, praising God in the midst of trial, and other such ideas and practices.
If you've already considered other works on the Christian spiritual disciplines traditions there isn't much here that you would find new, but if you're new to the idea of the disciplines, this book provides a good and easily accessible and understandable way forward for you to consider.

One of my favorite ways to bring me peace and bring me closer to God is my quiet time with the Lord. This author does a beautiful job through life stories, guiding techniques, and scriptures, introducing the reader to Christian mediation practices. I loved that each chapter ends with a “Meditative Moment” to help apply the material to everyday life. Such excellent practical suggestions are offered in this book. It’s a beautiful read and is a great way to help release your daily worries to the Lord through prayer, worship, and mediation as you draw closer to Him daily.
I have received this product through Front Gate Media in exchange for my honest and unbiased product review; all opinions are my own.*
Decent little book about Christian meditation, though having the author name drop all his well known, power exec type friends got old. Esoteric experiences had while staring for hours at a piece of art are probably great for him, but I’d rather watch paint dry.
It was also agonizingly rambling in spots and kind of a chore to read. Sometimes it felt like he was writing just to hit a word count.
Not bad, and your mileage may vary of course, but I just had a hard time connecting with the book at all.
Rick Hamlin is truly an authority on the subject of Prayer. I’d read a number of his articles via Guideposts, and then his book 10 PRAYERS YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT which was outstanding. I probably didn’t like this one quite as much as that one, but it was still very interesting and insightful and inspirational. I have always thought meditation was an un-Christian act, more New Age, but the author truly makes a strong case for its use by Christians. I hope to employ at least some of the ideas from this book into my own prayer life.
I chose to read this book because I enjoyed reading Hamlin's devotional of the same name on the YouVersion app and craved more. Hamlin stretches the reader to develop a contemplative prayer life amidst modern demands and lifestyle. This has helped my prayer life develop on another level -- being still and knowing that He is God.
In this new addition to Rick Hamlin’s many books on prayer, he discusses how Christians can incorporate meditative prayer into their spiritual lives. It will be a welcome resource for any Christian’s body of armor. I enthusiastically recommend it.
Took a while to fully develop but it tied together very nicely in the end. He debunked a lot of myths about prayer/meditation. And it was a lot more encompassing than i thought it would be. Very elegant read.
Absolutely wonderful and absolutely readable for those new to meditation. This book breathed new life into my understanding and practice of meditation. Highly recommend.
This is an encouraging book about prayer and practicing God’s presence peacefully. God is real. He is there. He loves us and wants to communicate with us and us with Him. Highly recommend it.
Even Silence is a hand-holding approach to meditation. Rick Hamlin deftly displays how meditation has deep Christian roots as well as stepping someone through the journey of meditation. Most meditation books are good about introducing the practice yet rarely look at the many varied questions that surround the newcomer or guide them through multiple, gentle approaches. Hamlin is a wizard with both. I’ve read at least 40 different books and meditation and after Even Silence, I immediately moved it to one of my top recommendations for newbies. Kudos to Hamlin.
