What a wonderful Victorian mystery adventure! I loved this! A botched bread roll robbery spells trouble for Victorian sewer scamp, Nicholas Nabb―big trouble. But when a mysterious veiled widow, Annie, steps in to save him, it looks like his luck might finally be changing. Only Annie vanishes before they can become properly acquainted, leaving Nick with nothing but questions. Who is the lady behind the black veil? Why does she have a baby photo of him inside her locket? And, most importantly of all, where is she now? Nick will stop at nothing to find out. There’s a Victorian fair with a dastardly villain, a magic show with a dastardly villain, & a reform school for criminal boys with..you guessed it-a dastardly villain! Lol SO good! This book is another look into how life might have been like for an orphan at this time. It always makes me so sad, & amazes & angers me how people treated these CHILDREN. It’s just insane to me. This is full of adventure, & occasionally(like the title says)some MISadventures. The humor is so good too. Romp of a good time for sure. Such an interesting concept for a story. Definitely a different take on the usual Victorian orphan story/orphan reuniting with a parent story-& I LOVED it. I read this so fast. There’s danger, humor, escapades galore, & AMAZING characters. Nicholas is just the best. He has always wanted the love that having parents would bring, & now that he is so close he will do anything to get it. He lovvvves his pies too lol I do too, so I appreciate that haha! Then Edwin! Such a great character! Love the friendship they form so much. A dangerous adventure, & heartwarming at the same time. Fast paced, twists, & just so imaginative. Highly recommend! Another STUNNING cover by the amazing Marco Guadalupi as well!💜

This was a brilliant read! Full of mystery, adventure and fun. I love books with Victorian London as the setting.

There were several times while reading this book, I found myself laughing out loud at Nick’s cheeky wit!

Nick and I both have a love of pies in common :)

I really enjoyed the circus part of the story, it gave me The Greatest Showman vibes!

If you are looking for a fast paced, fun summer read, then I recommend you check this one out!

Nick was handed into an orphanage years ago by his weeping father, but now he’s escaped. He sleeps in the sewers and lives on what he can find or swipe. When a mysterious veiled lady saves him from trouble over a theft, then disappears, Nick finds himself on an adventure to find out who she is and why she sought him out.

Nick tumbles from danger to danger, extricating himself with guts and cunning, only to face more trouble from enraged musicians, fairground owners and policemen. He’s resourceful, brave and loyal and a very likeable hero. This is a fast-paced story full of life and love, trouble and mystery, with several twists on the way to keep you on your toes.
