Hell opens up in this second installment of the Nick Holleran series. We meet more of the big players and get to see things through their eyes. There is a watched and stalked feeling coating the Holleran scenes that follow. This ominous tone fits the setting well.

At the same time, we are seeing a bigger picture, we come down into the case of Diana, the ghost of a teenage girl. We get to know her alongside Nick and she quickly endeared herself to me as a favorite. The horror and hardship she had to endure, was heart-wrenching.

It's not all work though, Nick gets the chance for a little romance in this one. It doesn't get mushy or become a huge focus, but it does take the edge off of our lead, just a bit. Which is vital when dealing with such heavy themes of child-suffering and the nature of heaven and hell.

The plot has definitely thickened, it's a pea soup with Holleran floating on a cracker in the middle.

The author embodies a detective, film noir style in his prose that flows beautifully.

Heartfelt and horrifying, all in one breath, this dark urban fantasy takes an epic turn that left me reaching for book 3.

I enjoyed this one more than book one. The straight up feel is darker than Dresden Files and the ghost aspect is a particularly cool vibe, and that is before the major supernatural elements kick in.

The dynamic between Diana and Nick is skilfully crafted in terms of Nick's development, and the major storyline that Nick walks and stumbles into. While book one feels a tad abrupt, this one has space to undulate and develop and reads better for it.

Diana stood out - very neat.
Marvin jnr - felt a tad polite in the cabin.
Marvin Snr - another neat touch.
The inheritance - I have to admit, I was waiting for that.
The betrayal - unexpected, but fitting and should make the future books entertaining.

While short, it packs a lot in and should be a straight up recommendation for anyone into urban fantasy. There's even a cool car...

Wow.

Deeper, darker, funnier, more tension, more action, more quiet moments. I'm not sure how Green managed to pull of such a mix in his fantasy horror noir sequel, but he has.

It goes to such dark place; child murder, race, found family (a hallmark I've identified in the authors work) all the while grounded Nick Holleran as a person in this hellish world. And all the while, like that grey cloud on the horizon, something is coming; the sense of foreboding dominates proceeding but doesn't smother it; again, Green uses humour to make us smile and belly laugh at just the right moments when it all threatens to get too desperate.

Please bring book 3 soon. I am begging you.

I really enjoyed Nick Holleran again! I liked this book so much, I was ready to delve right into Book 3, alas, I accidentally order Book 4 instead. So, I have to wait two days. The Devil Walks in Blood further fleshes about Hell on Earth, Haven. Nick appears to have added a couple souls to his found family. He continues to investigate paranormal matters, which are beginning to intertwine with one another. Both the first and second book are fastpaced and the world building is coming together. Looking forward to finally getting Book 3 and then reading Book 4.

I was fortunate to pick up this book to have the 2 stories in one book. An introduction to P I Nick Holleran in the first part of the book. The detective is able to see ghosts and other things that normal humans can't see. The first story gives you his background and then it gets interesting

The second part of this book gives you more action and tells the tale in a way that you know more is to come.

I really enjoyed this book and the characters, I've heard that people have compared this to the Dresden files , I feel it is better and the only similarity between Dresden and Nick Holleran is that they are detectives there is no magic in this story but lots of intrigue and action

Nick Holleran is a smart arsed shmuck and I can’t wait to read more of his adventures.

This second instalment has us go deeper into Nick’s life, his acceptance or lack thereof about hell and the realisation he’s still a shmuck who hasn’t quite got it all worked out like he thought.

A darker and gritty adventure, with Nick thrown into a shit storm after shit storm. I loved that minor characters from the first book came back to play as well as some intriguing new additions. The overarching story Nick is travelling has my hairs standing to attention and my curiosity well and truly peaked.

A great series. I can’t wait for the next instalment

So, Dark fantasy isn’t normally my genre of choice and I often avoid it, but the supernatural element of this book begged me to read it. And OMG! Was it amazing! I Loved the characters! I loved the absolutely creative world building where on one level it is an urban fantasy and on another we are all just beings making our way through hell. And I loved all the crazy creatures and hellacious beings.

Nick Holleran is more than just your average PI. After a case gone terribly wrong he wakes from a near death experience to discover that Earth is none other than Hell itself, where demons, ghosts and other entities travel among the living and God is very specific on who he lets into Heaven. 5 years has passed and Nick has continued his PI business, although, his clientele now also includes the dead. In this book which also includes a novella Nick takes on a couple of supernatural cases that turn his world even more upside down. He seeks revenge, searches out buried, hidden, and forgotten secrets, and learns to embrace love in all its forms.

This book had several amazing characters. I really enjoyed Nick and all his snarkiness. He had faults and vices but he was so likeable and relatable and I couldn’t help but adore him. I also really enjoyed Diana, the ghost girl that has stared into the corner of his office for at least the last five years (it’s more…but Nick wasn’t aware of her before then). She was sweet and innocent but tough as…well…Hell. And I loved her!

I really really enjoyed this book. I loved the mix of supernatural and darkness and surprising snarky humor. So if you like a book with amazing characters, where the evil is truly possible, lots of supernatural aspects, and it really is hell on earth then you just have to give The Devil Walks in Blood a read! (Hey! And it’s October, so it totally fits the mood) You won’t regret it.

Nick Holleran, a P.I. from Haven, died for a few minutes before being reborn. Now he is able to see ghosts and other paranormal creatures, and, oh yeah, he is in Hell. He tries to make the best of his situation and takes on paranormal cases (plus "normal" ones).

The book is divided into two parts. Part one is the story of Nick dying and trying to find his place among the ghosts in Hell - it's the novelette Dead Man Walking.
Part 2 is the first book in the series.

This reminds me a lot of the Dresden Files, although Nick is a normal guy without any magic. He tries to stay on the right path to maybe get into heaven when his time comes, but he gets into situations that make it hard for him not to act on revenge. Revenge being a sin would keep him from entering the pearly gates.

My favorite character next to Nick is Diana. I loved reading about her and Nick's relationship and was happy to see her grow so much over the course of the story. I also didn't expect the end of the case and my brain totally shut down for a moment until it started processing the information. Fantastic twist by the author!

I'm not a fan of urban fantasy at all, but this has gripped me and now I'm off reading book 2🤩

I read Dead Man Walking and was so very excited to see this second part of Nick Holleran’s story. I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review. The cover of this book is amazing to me. Shows off the male character and the title jumped out at me.
David has done a great job with his character development and Nick’s world is so interesting to read about.

After reading Dead Man Walking, I knew at some point the spirit that lived in his office would have to come into the story at some point and I am so happy I wasn’t wrong. Diana holds such an important role in this book and I was pleased to get to know her a bit better.

Nick, the PI who deals with paranormal investigations is such an awesome character that I just want to know more about him. How he handles himself, his mannerisms, and his ability to take down anything that stands in his way is a wonderful way to help the flow of this book.

Rosa, well, you can tell she cares deeply for Nick and I am so happy for that.

Suraz and Charon...I wasn't sure whose side they were on, but they did not disappoint me.

I will tell you that Marvin was quite a shocking surprise and I’m not talking about a good surprise.
Then we have Lucifer, and everyone knows about Lucifer so I don’t think I need to go into much detail, you just have to meet him for yourself.

This author’s writing style is spectacular. The flow and pacing of the words were just perfect. I look forward to more adventures with Nick.

Here are a couple of lines from the book that grabbed my attention.
“Nick Holleran,” I whisper, tracing where Lucifer’s fingers grazed my skin. “What makes you so important?”

“Trash like you are the reason the Devil walks in blood…..”

Well done Mr Green. 5/5 stars for this one as well.

“Trash like you are the reason the Devil walks in blood.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced introduction to David Green’s writing and the character of Nick Holleran. (the edition I read contains both books one and two).

Green has crafted a gritty, and at times gloriously brutal version of our world where Hell is not a realm that exists separate to the physical world of the living but rather overlays it completely. It is a world populated with all manner of ghost and demon, a handful of fallen angels, and a certain ferryman who has a penchant for dressing like the grim reaper version of a Clint Eastwood cowboy and possesses an almost stalkerish obsession with our main protagonist.

It could have been very easy for Nick to slide into the stereotypical whiskey guzzling, chain smoking, somewhat bitter (or at least “done with this shit called life”) private detective but his character has nice depth and does show growth over the course of the two books. The supporting cast is brilliant, they are well developed and don’t just exist as tools to progress the plot. I loved them all for different reasons but my favourite was Diana, I was intrigued by her from the moment she was introduced and oh boy did she deliver when she was given more page time.

If you like noir-esque, gritty, and at times dark, urban fantasy with multifaceted characters and strong world building then I highly recommend picking up The Devil Walks in Blood.

“Dead Man Walking” follows private detective Nick Hollaran, as he navigates his way through his “second” life, having died briefly during an encounter with a bad guy, Wheeler, the villain of his story. Since being brought back, Nick has come to realize two things, that Heaven does exist and Hell is real and is on earth. He can now see, hear and interact with all of those demons of the dark as he goes about his life, and uses his newly discovered resources of the dead and demonic to help him solve a wide variety of cases.

The first story, “Dead Man Walking” is a short, quick read that serves to introduce Nick Holleran and his new take on life. It also serves up his first case and allows the readers to see the glimpse into the Hell that Nick now sees all around him, every day. Several key characters are introduced including a love interest of sorts, Rosa, the woman that saved him the day he died. Ruby, owner of Styx Bar, where both humans and Hell dwellers go, and she seems to be a constant source of information and advice for our doomed detective.

Cyril seems to be a character that we can expect to see again, not that many people want to see a giant demon with an attitude. Suraz, is a Nephilim, described as children of angels and daughters of men, they fall on the Hell Hierarchy just below Lucifer himself. Charon, the ferryman between Earth and Hell dimensions. Then there is Darcy, the ghost of a young girl that inhabits his office.

Green does an excellent job setting up the characters, the details, the setting and paints an elaborate scene of each one so you can visually see them and the events as they unfold. The action is well-written, the details plausible and researched and everything smoothly falls into place as it should.

In the second novella, Green continues the story right where we left off, with Nick picking up a new case from an unlikely source. Darcy, the ghost in his office, enlists his help. Suraz plays a larger role in this new story as rumors are rampant about troubles between Heaven and Hell. Not one for spoilers, I will end this review here, but make sure to pick these quick reads up for yourself.

Green has created an excellent world for his cast of characters to play in and I hope he visits it again and again. I can see a long line of cases coming for Nick Holleran. Four stars for fun, fast-paced demons and detectives!

Nick Holleran is in trouble again - is it any wonder? As if living in Hell wasn’t difficult enough, as Haven's only paranormal PI, he practically lives for trouble. Hired by the ghost from his office to solve her decades-old murder, you'd think he had enough going on to keep him busy, but a grumpy nephilim, a psychotic Satanist and his own attempts at reviving his love life give him even more to juggle.

Nick is joined by a great cast of characters, including Ruby, owner of The Styx, the local bar which caters to both the living at the dead, Diana, the teenage ghost from the office, and Rosa, who can't *see* like Nick can, but still has his back.

I love the fast pace and the snark. I had to force myself to put the book down and do some real-life stuff so that I could savour it - otherwise I'd have finished it in one sitting. Light in tone, but the stakes feel real, this will likely appeal to fans of Dresden, but in my opinion this is better.

Highly recommended.

This edition includes the novella, Dead Man Walking and the novel, The Devil Walks in Blood.

Nick is a Private Investigator in Haven. Five years ago he died – almost. Since then, he has learned that the world we live in is literally Hell, and that we are surrounded by ghosts, demons, and other supernatural creatures. And now, the wife of the man who killed him has come to him for help – to save her from the ghost of her husband.

Following the events in Dead Man Walking, Nick’s life just keeps getting weirder. After five years of staring at the wall in his office, Diana’s ghost becomes Aware, and asks him to investigate her murder. Meanwhile, he is being followed everywhere by a devil-worshiper, a mysterious presence, and a strange fog.

I really enjoyed these books. Nick is an interesting take on the jaded PI trope – he carries around a lot of baggage, much of it relating to being denied ascension to Heaven when he was brought back to life. He is a likeable character – a cynical do-gooder, caught up in events beyond his control. The supporting characters really flesh out the story and make the world feel more substantial.

I look forward to reading more, and seeing how the various characters grow into the roles that were hinted at thus far.

Again this book reminds me of the old type detective, a similar character to Sam Spade, but in an entirely different type of world.
Nick has dies and come back to life to Hell on Earth.
He fits the mold of the dark PI - drinking, smoking, and tough.
this book has a combination of mystery, dark urban fantasy with extremely good characters.
I won't say it's an easy read as it does have the darker elements but is its an enjoyable read.
Definitely want to read more in this world.

This story was an absolute wild ride, beginning to end! I absolutely love these characters. Although there were a lot of dark parts, I love how there was always the glimmer of hope that Nick carries with him. What's good? What's evil? And who has the right to determine that? This book is just incredible, and I'll be reading the next ASAP!

*This review is for book 2 only*

Ghosts, devil worship, monstrous beasts and much more flow within the cases of Nick Holleran in Hell as they continue in continue in book 2 of this series. It can be read as a standalone but will have more impact when the first one is read beforehand. David Green further establishes the damned Private Investigator as he takes on a case that begins with the dead girl who has haunted the corner of his office for decades. He throws interesting concepts and characters in as well as his own takes on mythical creatures that link to the afterlife and the world in which it is set.

The dark, gritty tone works great and is maintained from the first book. It’s a very entertaining world with its own perils and room to expand for book 3. There is a somewhat unseen overarching story within which is what makes this series gripping and intricate when it comes to depth the reader can attain in the story.

My only gripe would be that, although much longer and more detailed than the first, I enjoyed the first book a little more because this one felt on rails in places. One mishap after another for the MC. However, this doesn’t take away from the imaginative storyline and noir/crime elements that make this series shine so well. The fight scenes were particularly well crafted and the ever closing fate of Charon upon Nick Holleran keeps you guessing at what is yet to unravel about Nick Holleran’s life.

I enjoyed it so much I will definitely be reading the third entry.

I'm not the world's most enthusiastic urban fantasy reader, but I really adored this book. Nick is an unforgettable protaganist, with a smart, snarky POV that made it a pleasure to spend time in his head. The book also uses lots of concepts from many different kinds of world mythology about death and afterlives, woven together skillfully. I'm a big fan of the TV show Supernatural, and if you enjoy that kind of paranormal adventurey-investigatey vibe, I think you'll really like this! I certainly did.

I swear sometimes my job is killing me. That's exactly what literaly killed private detective Nick Holleran.

David Green was awesome enough to send me copies of both his paranormal detective stories, 'Dead Man Walking' and 'The Devil Walks in Blood' for review.

Nick Holleran finds himself helping Diana, the mystery ghost from his office, and involved in a job that he can’t say no to.

Nick will soon realize that he became the pray of an unspeakable evil entity and he is now in a messy situation involving the Haven Police Department.

Putting his life at stake, Nick will soon realize the Devil isn't the only one that walks in blood.

The author masterfully constructs his characters and builds a world with such craftsmanship that highlights his amazing storytelling abilities.

Both books read like a cross between an elegant detective film noir mystery and an upgraded paranormal action thriller in the likes of 'Constantine' infused with the unique writing style of the author.

With the right amounts of thriller, action and humor, the Holleran series is an immensely enjoyable and piercingly clever read that will keep you hooked and asking for more, begging for this to become a TV series.

This book was good fun. It took me a second to realize this is both books 1 AND 2 (I kept wondering WHY the first half was so goddamn familiar 😂) but once my dumbass figured out I'd already read the first book under a different title it was smooth sailing.

Nick really grew as a character in this installment, and I was definitely attached to Diana by the end. I'll certainly pick up book 3!

The second instalment of the Nick Holleran series is a longer and story and I’m al the happier for it. It was great to delve deeper into Nick’s mind and also get more of his supporting cast in this one. He has a great team around him. I particularly enjoyed Diana, the deaf girl in the corner. I can’t wait to see how the bigger story develops and grows in future stories.
Green has struck gold with this universe and his protagonist, Nick Holleran. Roll on the 3rd instalment!

From the first page to the last, I was gripped by this tale. I loved the first book, Dead Man Walking, and I was thrilled when I learned there was a sequel coming out. Now that I've got my hands on it, I can say without a doubt that Nick Holleran is one of my favorite series. The cast of characters that David Green is building are amazing and I enjoy every bit of information I learn about them. Though I will be honest and admit, I NEED to know more about Suraz! His story pulls at me and I am hoping that when the author releases the third in the series I will get that! Nick is such a great character and I love rooting for him! He's such a good guy, flawed and damned, but so damn good! Can't wait for the next installation of the Nick Holleran series!

A combined edition of both Dead Man Walking and The Devil Walks in Blood, this is a fantastic duology of urban fantasy following a PI with a penchant for seeing the dead. And the monsters. And the demons. And those fallen from God's grace.

Dead Man Walking
The first novella is shorter, really serving as an introduction to the world and to Nick. It's well done and gives you all the back-story to Nick you need whilst throwing him into an action full narrative. It's short and sweet, yet manages to be both entertaining and quite powerful at points.

The Devil Walks in Blood
The second novella has more meat on the bones, with several interlapping cases, a murdered blind girl, a crazy devil-worshipper and a disruption in hell. This is well paced with interesting and idiosyncratic characters who really draw you into the story and the satisfaction of a mystery resolved.

In both novella's there is some interesting commentary here on life, death, forgiveness, redemption and how hell is all around us. It served as a good counterpoint to the gritty drama of the cases Nick gets involved in and his penchant for getting in some seriously close scrapes. I really liked the melding of the gritty detective elements with the urban fantasy setting; it combines two of my favourite genres. I say that with such confidence, yet my favourite genre can change on a dime depending on what I'm reading in honesty. It reminded me quite a lot of the Dresden Files, which I also loved, so that's a double bonus!

All in all, this is an intelligently written, darkly riveting duology and I look forward to reading the third instalment. It's been downloaded.

Fateless

I loved Nick Holleran so much that I had to read the next one. Green’s writing never ceases to amaze me, it immerses you into this world in a flowing manner without being overly descriptive.

Nick is the kind of character you just can’t help but like. Having died he can now see those of the underworld; demons, ghosts and my favorite nephilim, Suraz. Whom I'm pretty much in love with. I also thoroughly enjoyed Nicks relationship with Diana and his struggle with accepting her not going into heaven.

“You know that sensation when you wake in the middle of the night startled and afraid, but you don’t know why? That’s one of these bastards howling close by. A normal human doesn’t hear it, but on some level, they feel it.” So this will haunt me for the rest of my days David Green 🙄

Rosa? I don't know but I think she might be cooler then Nick. The lady teaches Aikido. In your profession, Nick, put a ring on it and give the lady anything she wants.

This book gets into your head. It gets into the nether regions of Heaven and Hell and sinks you into it in such a deep, dark, fast paced way that has you on the edge of your seat. This should seriously be a movie. It reminds me a tiny bit of Constantine. If he were a PI.

Wendigo's terrify be they always have and of course there are some in here. Ugh.

All in all I'm again surprised with my absolute pleasure in reading a book that is not my usual genre, but thank you David Green.

(This review originally appeared at historythatneverwas.com.)

The Devil Walks in Blood by David Green combines the first two books in this supernatural private investigator series into a single volume, giving the reader a fuller picture of the fascinating world and characters.

Nick Halloran died while on a case, but the intervention of a passerby made sure he didn’t stay that way. Unfortunately, it left him with a rather inconvenient side effect—now he sees and hears ghosts. Combined with his line of work, investigating supernatural goings-on in the town of Haven, which to Nick is “Hell,” he’s got all sorts of unusual things breathing down his neck and trying to make him dead for a second, more final time. But of course his life couldn’t be that simple, so he’s got entities trying to keep him alive as well, making him a fairly permanent resident of Hell.

The stories included in this book have a strong Noir, hard-bitten detective vibe while still reflecting modern sensibilities, with fewer damsels in distress and plenty of references to popular music from the character’s lifetime. Nick’s character voice is equal parts charming and rough, and the supporting cast of characters, even when they aren’t entirely human, have similar endearing qualities. If you’re a fan of the Dresden Files books but are looking for something a little different, check out The Devil Walks in Blood!

Damn, another fantastic story from Nick Halloran's world, where hell holds no bounds even for the living and its supernatural beings and entities.

I absolutely love Nick Halloran's character. A PI who has been given a second chance at life, Nick believes he knows what hell is all about, but he hasn't even begun to scratch the surface as we learn in this second installment to the series.

David Greens writing draws you in with his witty, humorous, and dark writing. In the Devil Walks In Blood, the story continues literally from where the first book ends.

The Ghost that has been haunting his office the last five years, has offered him a case to find her killer, a young black girl from the sixties has been lingering in the property Nick now calls his office since she died. Nick takes the case, and we set out on a new dark adventure.

The characters, worldbuilding, plot, and setting are so good, and it totally reminds me of one of my favourite tv series, the Supernatural, but with a one man show.

I can't wait for the third instalment, One Life Left. If you're a fan of the dark and supernatural, I highly recommend..😁🖤
