About the author

ARUP KUMAR DUTTA is a fulltime author and freelance journalist from Assam in North-East India who has attained international recognition. A prolific and versatile writer and scholar, during a span of five decades he has written short-fiction, long-fiction, non-fiction, satires, newspaper editorials, articles and columns, as well as books for young adults. So far he has written 18 books for adults and 17 adventure novels for young people. He has been not only acknowledged as a pioneer in English writing in the North-East, but also as a writer who has spent a lifetime familiarizing the rest of India about the history and culture of this region.

Living legend Dr. Bhupen Hazarika has sung-"The mighty Brahmaputra,holy site of great synthesis,has for untold centuries been propagating the message of unity and harmony." Rightly is Brahmaputra the lifeline of Assam. Noted author Arup Kumar Dutta who always brings out various aspects of Assamese society and culture in his novels, has done a tremendous service by writing this excellent account of the largest river of India. Along with the geographic and scientific details of the river, he has very lucidly written about its influence in the socio-cultural life of Assam. Bihu songs are composed, proverbs are said, people dance in joy and gaiety-all along with the mighty 'Luit' as it's fondly called. Dutta has also been successful in purposefully including a great deal of history of the north eastern region. however the pictures could have been a little better.
In a nutshell, 'The Brahmaputra' by Arup Kumar Dutta is a fantastic read. You should read this book to have the correct idea about this truly international river with its largest basin in India.

after the great tributes by dr bhupen hazarika in many a songs i feel i literally have anything to say. however i must write something at least for my father who was a teacher by profession and who introduced me to the river 1977. afterwases i have seen the river in many a times in many places throughout upper and lower assam till 1993.
this book as an account of the river the people the civillization by the great river takes me back to my old days of green inocence.
really a good read.

A nice chronicle of one of the greatest river systems of the world. This a nice tribute to the very river of Assam and the North East.

Brahmaputra, the most gifted river, one of the largest and greatest in the world, following from time immemorial, but not worshipped in the Vedas or by Aryans, not counted in Seven Sacred Rivers. But this is the main of all the sacred rivers of the would.
