For twenty years, Ethril has seen peace since the War of Regions tore through the country. But now, an unseen hand seeks to tug at the threads of fate across the world. Starting the adventure of your dreams, meeting new friends, and getting tangled up with the conspiracies of some shadowy overlords. Not a bad start for Caden's seventeenth birthday. When Caden and friends find themselves the target of these overlords known only as the Divines, they're left with two choices; Bow in fealty, or challenge the very rule of the world, and maybe have some fun along the way. Meanwhile, the rest of the world watches on with the looming Summit of Leaders, gathering the world's most combustible political elements in one room. In the frozen north, The Dracus seek to end their generations-long feud with the oppressive Dragons. But they face a choice that could change everything. Calaera readies herself to step in to oversee the capital with her Father, King Dreymond, departing for the Summit. What awaits her is anybody's guess.
I loved this book! I have read the author's other published work and enjoyed it, and I was greatly anticipating a fantasy title from him. The Keeper's Codex did not disappoint!
Fans of classic epic fantasy will enjoy this fun take on the genre, with lots of lovable characters you can't help but root for. Caden is a naive but lovable hero who feels like an old friend as you move through the story.
Stories about connection and friendship are often hard to come by, but I think that's a message we all sorely need in these times. I am looking forward to any works Wills puts out in the future!
The Keeper's Codex puts a surprising and fun spin on classic fantasy. It's clear that Wills's imagination knows no bounds in this magical tale of adventure, friendship and fantastical worlds.
The Keepers Codex is a fantasy all its own. It definitely has the roots of an anime with it's overexcited trainwreck of an MC. The world is awash with different POVs and species. This isn't your typical fantasy book. So if you love anime, give Caden a chance. You might be surprised.
I had the pleasure of reading The Keeper's Codex by A.D. Wills. This is more lighthearted than what I'm normally into but now and then I feel adventurous. Which was exactly what reading this turned out to be. First, the chapters were a bit long at times but structured well enough to keep the flow. There are a lot of characters and points of view to keep up with, but they were interesting enough to follow. They all contributed to the story in their own way. I also wanted to mention that this had strong Hobbit vibes, so anyone who is a Hobbit fan may want to check this out. The Keeper's Codex follows the journey and mishaps of the absolutely delightful and charming trainwreck of a main character, Caden. In the beginning, he strikes me as a naive young man who wants to see the world outside of his surroundings. Without giving away spoilers, it starts with a letter from his parents. He picks up some friends along the way. We're introduced to a side plot featuring Dreymond and Calaera in the second chapter but it ties in cleverly. This transitions to a background story about the Dracus and what they have to do with some of the characters, then we go back to Caden and some mess he gets himself in. I loved the descriptions in the chapters with the King's Tournaments. The Divines were uniquely crafted villains. Just when you don't know how much more of a mess Caden can get himself into, there he goes into another one. I couldn't help but shake my head at him sometimes, but he's so loveable! He really comes to life at one point when he shows how brave he really is. It all flowed together so well, along with the multiple POVs. The power of friendship is strong in this one!
"All Caden's ever wanted is to become an adventurer. Ever since listening to the wondrous stories his parents, Lukas and Maria, told him before bed nearly every night, Caden's never stopped dreaming of all the endless possibilities."
The Keeper's Codex is exactly that. This story is just brimming with adventure; this is what you tell to children at night-time to illicit a sense of wonder into them!
We're also introduced to well crafted, diverse characters. All unique and solidified in their own way, and yet also with the shade of tropes you find in your typical fantasy story. Not a bad thing, I should add; just that familiarity that strikes home. There's also some non-binary rep in here too!
The thing I loved most about The Keeper's Codex was the imagination of the world-building. Not to go into too much detail, as not to spoil anything, but I particularly loved the city of Floralopolis; a city of enormous flowers and humanoid bug-like creatures. I just adored the attention to detail in that particular part of the story!
I found a few typographical errors, but nothing too drastic.
I love a good fantasy world and the author delivers! The description in here just takes you right to the moment and I was left a bit dazed to realize I was still in my bedroom. You feel the temperature, you see the sights, you taste the food. I could have read a whole novel just exploring the world.
The characters are just as much fun though. Each one is fun alone but when you put them together, you really have a glorious thing. The dialogue in particular was snappy, unique but realistic. Felt like I was overhearing real people converse.
Definitely a journey worth taking. I can’t wait to see what else the author has in store for us.
The best way I can describe this book is fun and delightful. The characters and the world they inhabit are fully realized and the attention to detail of the setting paints a very colorful and vivid picture for the reader. The protagonists are all unique and rather likable. The story has a very light, almost anime-like feel to it, which was a win for me. The book goes through multiple points of view that further shape the world. The only thing that threw me about this book was the narrative voice seeming to constantly shift between third-person close and third-person omniscient. Almost every character you know what they're thinking or feeling, so it leaves very little to the imagination in that regard. But if you're tired of grimdark settings and want a fantasy adventure with fun and excitement, you will definitely enjoy this!
I enjoyed this book so much! So many different characters yet all unique and interesting. Caden and Shyn were my favourite. The story flowed effortlessly between the different elements. I hope there will be more to come
This is a fun and exciting fantasy adventure filled with original species and alluring places. The third person omniscient narration and multiple points of view allow the reader to discover various fascinating parts of the world and have a glimpse of different characters' lives and motivations. I didn't feel like I got to know any of the characters on a deep level, but all of them felt distinct in the ways they thought, spoke and behaved, and I didn't have trouble remembering who was who.
The book reminded me of an open world video game with characters going on exciting quests in a fascinating and complex world. It has an adventurous mood and is filled with kindness, but there is also real danger, loss and high stakes. Despite that, the book felt light and was easy to read.
The world and the story are layered, revealing more complexity as the plot progresses, and it left me with an impression there is much more to be discovered and explored.
You might enjoy the book if you are into epic fantasy, like books with multiple points of views and are looking for something light and adventurous to read.
An amazing and beautiful story that take place in a beautiful and unique world. A master piece of literature if I ever saw one. The story follow a lovable mc name Caden who infect everyone he meet and the reader with his loveable optimistic personality.
I enjoyed reading this fantasy adventure story. I thought it had some great characters and a good background to the story. I liked the world the author built, it was complex but also easy to understand.
I liked the characters in this book. We got learn a lot about them all through their different point of views. Having characters narrate certain chapters is a great way for the author to get to know them. It was good to read about what was happening to them and to hear their thoughts and feelings. I thought Caden was a strong and determined character. He was very likeable and unique.
I was excited about what was going to happen in this book and the journey the author took the characters on. I feel like from the first chapter, I was hooked on the story. I feel like there is more to come from this world.
This book was easy to read and to understand. There was no complicated terminology in this book and everything was explained well to the reader. I enjoyed the authors captivating style of writing. It was very detailed and gripping.
